The guitarist with the long blonde hair is Davey Johnstone who has been with Elton since 1971. Drummer Nigel Olsson has been with him since 1972. Along with the late Dee Murray they have been the core of his band throughout his career.

Where to start. This was FANTASTIC live. But really, you must listen to the studio version. In fact, you should do a special listen to the entire Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. Please. Maybe one side at a time? It’s one of those albums where you need to experience the whole thing. It is a masterpiece. A. Masterpiece. One of the greatest of all time. Period. Elton John in the 70’s was bigger than anyone. And he ROCKED. People today think of his quieter, softer songs from the 80’s. Easy listening. But nothing compares to the brilliance of the rock he put out in the early 70’s. “Madman Across The Water”, “Saturday Night’s Alright”, “Levon”, “Ballad of Danny Bailey”…… far too many to list. Jump down the rabbit hole. You will be blown away. And Bernie Taupin must also be mentioned. Elton John wouldn’t be who he is if not for Taupin. A genius lyricist.

Captain Fantastic has been grabbing our attention for my entire life of music awareness. I loved when you said,"I thought Elton John was going to be slower"! The MAGIC of many 70's bands was that they made soft, melodic, elegant songs with extremely talented musicians and song writers. Better than any other generation or decade. The culture of the time wanted a lot of mellow, happy songs. But when it came time to ROCK and ROCK HARD, many of the "softer" bands and other genres like prog rock, stepped up and just SHREDDED! Much of this showed up in concerts. Eagles. Little River Band, Jackson Browne, Loggins and Messina, all made their way with wonderfully crafted ballads and "soft rock" songs. But when it was time to get the audience standing, dancing and screaming, they delivered with a powerhouse sound not unlike the hard driving bands like The Who or Led Zep.

It's a sonic masterpiece and quite dramatic, but a lot of that is lost in subsequent live versions of it. Don’t pass up listening to some of the studio tracks. Elton’s albums were meticulously crafted and engineered.
Also, earlier live performances from his younger days are worth a look. He was a trouper who toured extensively in his, ahem, later years.
I’ve seen him 4 times, first in 1974. Massive talent.
I would suggest listening to Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy as it is an autobiographical reference to Elton and Bernie Taupin, who wrote all the lyrics. Bernie lived in the country, Elton embraced the limelight.

OH MY!! Welcome to the genius that is Elton John!! I've been following Elton since the 70's. You have no idea how deep of a rabbit hole THIS is!! Elton is a classically trained pianist, playing since he was a child - a prodigy actually. The coming together of lyricist Bernie Taupin and musical composer Elton John was a match made in heaven for the musical world. I don't even know where to start with making suggestions as to what to listen to - Elton has a VERY EXTENSIVE catalogue of music that spans DECADES! Since you started with Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding (this performance was fire!) - I do suggest you listen to the studio version of this - it will blow your mind! Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a masterpiece double album. Tumbleweed Connection, which is vintage (1970) Elton John, is a masterpiece as well. There are others too. Might I suggest YOUR SONG (studio version, 1970) since it was Elton's first international top 10 charted single. It's a touching love song, with such a pretty melody and beautiful lyrics. There are songs that are bangers and songs that will make you cry...can't wait to follow you on your journey as you discover this brilliant music!!

There are only two original members of Elton's band, from the recording of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, still alive, Davey Johnstone (Guitars) and Nigel Olsson (Drums). And that is how a Legend does it. He definitely went out on farewell tour with a bang. Good for you Sir Elton John. You left us a lifetime of great music to keep listening to. Enjoy your retirement and family. God bless

His early stuff are still my favorites of his! He truly had a band with him and most of those songs were co-written with his lyrisist( poet) Bernie Taupen!

Had the good fortune to see him twice at MSG in the 70s while I was in high school. This song was his opener.
Band much more electric live than on the studio recordings. Also, the second time I saw him was when John Lennon came on stage.
That was the loudest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.
    They sang :
whatever gets you through the night, Lucy in the sky with Diamond and I saw her standing there.
I thought the roof was going to cave in.
Elton - one of the greatest live showmen of all time.

This is a very deep rabbit hole. He has so many hits and I'm sure you've heard some of his soundtracks, especially from Disney movies. Enjoy the discovery.

Wow, Elton has a library of music that you can totally lose your way in! So so many songs to suggest, my fave would have to be "Madman Across The Water" or the sweetness of "Harmony" which makes me think of my cousin who's birthday it is today. Happy travels dude, its gonna be quite a journey!

Yes, Madman! Studio version, and maybe the Mick Ronson version.

For full headphone effects, a listen to the studio version is necessary.

I had this album when it first came out and this is the first time I've seen it performed live. Loved it! I noticed that for more than 50 years guitarist Davey Johnstone is still playing with Elton. Thanks for the video Salvo! Can Elton's next song for you be "Tiny Dancer"? -studio version. I know you'll love it too.

Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road is an amazing album front to back. Twice. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" "Tiny Dancer" are great ballads. But there are so many hits, and you can hardly do wrong with any of them.

I saw Sir Elton at the Civic Center In Tallahassee a few years ago. One thing that impressed me, beside his obvious talent and the wow factor, was that he gave of himself to his audience again and again. He created a feeling of inclusion and let us know he really was grateful that we loved him and his music. Amazing, amazing man!

Oh hell yes!! 🥳 Shout out to Robert!! 👊🏽
This is the way to start Sir Elton John!! ❤
Go earlier, Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across the Water albums to experience the Taupin/John masterpieces.
EJ spans 7 decades, so there isn't anything you won't like.
My bro would roll a doob, and we'd plug into this album. 🔥
Blonde, tall, thin, next to EJ-lead guitar is Davey Johnston and top drum, dark hair, no glasses is Nigel Olsson, I had such a crush on him. 😂
Both together with EJ from way back when...
Blessed to have seen EJ 4 times, absolutely 1 of my fav artists. ❤
