    You guys are so smart to do this now, while you’re young! I’m nearly 70, trying to clear away forty years of stuff my deceased husband and I collected. I think we just shopped because we were bored! It’s so overwhelming to work my way through all this stuff! Anyone who reads this, try to do this now, while you’re young and your body doesn’t hurt when you lift all this stuff. You’ll be proud of yourself.

      Yes! One of my recent pet peeves is youtubers claiming to konmari their belongings when they're really just using a couple rules and/or going through the steps half-heartedly.

    • @dianal1679
      @dianal1679 5 років тому +50

      @NorthernLights Yes you should definitely declutter using whatever method works best for you. 100% agree with that.
      My issue is that people have been riding the recent popularity and using "KonMari" or "Marie Kondo" in their video titles and then disregarding the entire process.

    • @ranabee3785
      @ranabee3785 5 років тому +20

      I agree with that as well,@NorthernLights.
      Personally, it seems to me that a lot about this method is actually rather wasteful from a planetary perspective. At the very least, a lot more possessions could probably be donated, re-used, re-purposed, recycled, repaired, etc. Along the lines of "One person's trash is another person's treasure'.
      There is so much need in the world, and in our affluent Western society not many people seem to bother to donate even good, usable items .... it is just too much trouble for them. Just look at all the things that end up in our landfills.
      I like the decluttering idea, but lets put it in a larger perspective.

    In the show, she was clear about how some things have a purpose and that is enough for "joy."
    I hope I'm explaining that well enough. Like... Cookware wouldn't bring me joy, but there's a purpose, so I should keep it?
    I was wondering the same thing about your Jean jacket - you wear it, do you like it when you wear it? I think that's joy.

    • @MissTunaColada

    • @FiddlebirdBlue

      I'm not religious anymore, but I had a great pastor in my childhood who often preached that joy has many forms, not just an ecstatic high, but also a deep, calm well of contentment. He said we had to cultivate both not only in our relationships with God and faith, but in other areas of our lives, because highs cannot sustain us alone. So when I declutter, I don't feel conflicted about keeping things like cookware which provide a means to achieve contentment or fulfillment, even if the object itself does not spark joy. That being said, most of even my tools and stuff do spark joy. I have an ordinary, $10 hammer which genuinely sparks joy because it has nice lines and fits so well in my hand. Why not keep an eye out in thrift stores for a Crockpot that does spark joy for you, if your current one doesn't? You never know!

    The KonMari "thanking things" comes from Shintoism, where objects can acquire a kind of soul or intelligence depending on energy absorbed, or can have a native soul or energy if it's a natural item (like bamboo or cotton). Her numbers come from Japanese life, where spaces are typically quite small.
    There is even a word in Japanese for specifically collecting books that you bought, spent your money and time earning that money on, and ... never read. Ever. It gives constant anxiety and guilt to see them and think of how much you spent on them and the fact that you "wasted" all that by never reading them. So "keep only ____ books" comes from that. However, if you're a bibliophile and they make you genuinely happy? KEEP THEM! Mari approves!
    Folding things her way isn't even about doing it her way as something special. The idea here is to learn uniformity: a Japanese sense of "-do", like Nintendo (the way of second Heaven), kendo (the way of the sword), etc. A specific idea or method to approach harmony, perfection, and expedience. Really, it doesn't matter if you fold your underwear or not. What matters is are they stored neatly? Do you do it the same way every time? Doing it the same way every time means you no longer have "little anxieties" over how to do something each time. It's already decided for you. Doing it the same every time helps you do things by muscle memory when you are too tired to want to go on.

      Thanks LM especially your last paragraph because for me, if I don't know where the discarded stuff will go, that in of itself is stressful to me. Please list more places items can go. What about selling online? I don't know if it's worth it since I don't have much space for storage. I probably would need a video explaining how to do that.
      A final thought...it's about what "sparks joy" which could be a lot of things, but the key is that everything needs its own space. That's where I might have trouble. I have art supplies all over the place. Another issue besides having a small place, is that I don't have any closets. I live in the upstairs of an old house (someone lives below me).

I'm guilty of spending excesses when I no longer had dependents and felt I deserved to "treat myself", but soon realized stuff doesn't make me happy, but weighs me down emotionally. Plus, every $10, $25, etc spent impulsively adds up to taking thousands away from living the retirement I wanted. I'm much happier now with less and having people and experiences to fill my life. Yes, I get totally overwhelmed just looking at the thumbnail. Exhausted, too. I couldn't handle messing my house up to do the process. I ended up starting a slower method. Visible surfaces in the living room, kitchen, and bedroom first. That already felt satisfying. Then, each weekend I take on a hidden area. Just one. Honestly, when I had aimed somewhat at this method before, I end up with stacks of things all around my house for a month and get so shut down that I ended up looking like a hoarder. When I do it slow and steady everything stays in its space and I do a more minimalist process from there.

    I prefer buying storage containers from The Dollar Tree, Menards, Walmart, Target, and Amazon. The Container Store has a lot of great stuff, don't get me wrong, but it tends to be much pricier. The end result looks great though, so I'm not trying to minimize your effort. Just a tip for the future to help save money.

    "Sustainability" = taking care of what you have and doing without unless it's absolutely necessary. A lesson our forebears knew all too well. But then they called it "stewardship" or "practicality", or separating out the important from the unimportant. Some lessons are axioms, and good ones never die, but resurrect in different forms. Enjoyed your video.

    Some years ago, mid 1980s, I was in the middle of laundry when my parents visited. My mother was under a lot of stress as I ironed all my shirts - she never had to sit and do nothing to help. As I checked each shirt I found the collar and/or cuffs worn through completely. So I dumped it on the floor. The pile grew as I inspected each shirt. Seventeen shirts later and not one ironed! Poor Mum - her instinct was to mend them. She used to turn the collars on working shirts and cut back and mend damaged cuffs. Some shirts even came with spare collars in the 1950s!
    As I cycled through my clothes everything had given out at exactly the same time. After that I decided to have only three shirts. The cycling through is faster. They wear out faster and I get three new ones. I also reduced my colour choice to white only. Classic cut, white, collared and smart. Wear with anything and for any occasion and one less puzzle what colour combinations to pick.
    Little steps.

Every single one of these that I've ever watched there's a definite mental wall people hit a certain point. The pile of stuff is just completely overwhelming to deal with. If I can say one thing to anyone trying this is: get your partner involved ! My husband and I did KM almost four years ago when I was super depressed. There were days I didn’t feel like continuing to do it and my husband was like get up, we said we’d do Medicine today we’re doing medicine. It was so critical to not do it alone and that way we tackled our entire house and were on the same page about what stayed and what went.
    KonMari literally cured my depression that year because I am a stay at home mom and my space was DEPRESSING. It took us a year to fully finish KM but it was so worth it
    Nowadays, i declutter to reduce stress and a lot of people say “it’s not that messy” and I’m like “oh yes it is, do you not know what this could become !?!?”
    You should’ve seen how I lived before 🎻🎻🎻😱😱

    I had a similar problem with my mother and her boyfriend, who served time in the military. He had a bunch of friends who passed away. Being that, he also accumulated a lot of memorabilia from his fallen comrades. I suggested that he clean the place once, but gave me a look that I won’t forget.
    Shortly thereafter, during a small stint at a reunion for fallen soldiers, I called for the services of Jux Los Angeles, a garage and attic cleaning / reorganization company, based in southern a California. My mother’s boyfriend wasn’t pleased with what I had done at first. As a week passed by since the renovation, much to his chagrin, he had to tell me that the place looked so different and that now, he has a place where he can honor his brothers and sisters; in his garage ( I made it extra special and hung up some uniforms his comrades wore on the garage walls…)

    I really enjoyed your process. Thanks for letting us in on the journey. I watched it on our big screen with our 19 year old son, and we really wanted to hear what your man has to say. We feel like by min 20 he said 4 complete sentences. Your man didn’t get a chance to say very much. And that was very uncomfortable to watch. My son said it’s called “bulldozing” He also said, “well this is her Chanel and we know that he is mostly an accessory.” And also asked me why it mattered so much. And I said, maybe this means I am not letting my husband speak as much as he can and I actually want him to because he has so much gold to say, when I let him. So thank you for helping me see the areas I need to update and change in my life. Along with the Konmari.
