  • Hoarder to MINIMALIST| 4 Years of Decluttering Before and After Today, we are going to take a look at the last 4 years of my minimalist journey and see my home's before and after. Since decluttering around 85% of our family's possessions, we have seen incredible benefits!! Our home is easier to keep clean, we save money, and have more time for the things that matter most to us, to name a few! What's most amazing to see, however, is HOW I approached decluttering, WHAT I chose to get rid of, and WHEN I felt like I started reaping the rewards of decluttering. Thanks for joining me!! I hope you subscribe!

Decluttering is harder than you think because of good memories, health at the time, other commitments - so well done. Decluttering is an ongoing process which really never ends. 82 year old minimalist. 😁👍

I've spent weeks and weeks cleaning and decluttering my elderly parents' home. It's hard to part with things, but please don't leave your hoarding and clutter for someone else to deal with. Most likely, they'll have to deal it with during one of the worst times of their lives: when you've passed on, and they are in mourning and already emotionally overwhelmed, and it will become their responsibility right at the one moment when they have the least time, energy and emotional fortitude to do it. It's tragic and exhausting and it hurts!

This times x 1000! It took me years to go through my late mother's things. I even stored her belongings in a storage unit for a year, paid movers to bring them to my house when the unit rent increased, and guess what? Ended up donating 99% of it. What a waste of time and money! Lesson learned. I am determined not to burden my adult children with the same.

However, Dad (due to Depression era mentality) had 55 years of easy-to-trash stuff: periodicals, articles, maps, account statements, tax returns, photos of no one us kids recognized. The rest we auctioned or donated

Tip: buy enough bins to fit the space, pull out 1 item at a time and pop it right into a bin or trash

Thank u for sharing ur journey. I love how u say it doesn’t matter if it takes a week or today. Bc sometimes time is not my friend. So thank u. The stuff u said helped me a lot. Not to beat myself up. Which of course I do all the time. I’m a single momma and work all the time. So it seems somedays we got home just in time for bed. So cleaning is out the door. Today going to grocery store then cleaning while kids r at their dads😆

My cookbooks are long gone. It is so easy to find great recipes online. I did create a recipe holder 3 ring binder with cooking dividers. For the recipes I truly love, I print them, slide them into a plastic sleeve and into my binder. It’s my best system ever

I'm 68 and I know what you mean. I've been finding that as long as there's any clutter in a spot, it doesn't look like much is happening. Then when it's finally clear, the change seems sudden. It's taken me over a year, but I'm finally seeing a noticeable difference.

I don't agree with some of the pantry organizing methods: 1. The canned goods are in bins so you can't readily see what you have. Do you want to pick up each can to see what it is? 2. If you decant dry goods into jars, don't forget to cut the instructions out of the box and slide it into the jar so it can be read. 3. Organizing doesn't have to mean putting items into bins or jars or whatever. It is possible to be organized with things just sitting on the shelf! It's not all about making it look pretty, it's about function.

How large was her family & how often does she shop for groceries?? I have a friend with a very small kitchen, so she goes 5-7 times/month, between her & the cat running short. I try to go 1-2x/ month & have dedicated a linen closet to my storage, with no pets.

I put everything in bins. I love it. It looks clean and neat. I have some labeled incase I dont want to look through it.
But, cans in bins cleans up the area so much!
Cans are ugly. Lol so put those away.

I have a piece of furniture in another room with a lot of paper work in it. I want to clear it out, keep only what I need for taxes, file that stuff in my office, and use that space for candles that are used in that room. I am not a minimalist to this extent. But the magical thing about minimalism is, things just stay organised. Effortlessly. Because there is not that much to create a mess - and they are easy to put away fast, because there is actually space for them in the cupboards.
When I first started decluttering, it is actually shocking how much junk I was storing, that I never used. And now that I have less (I think I got rid of about 50% - I didn't have a specific goal in mind), I enjoy opening every drawer and closet. I enjoy cleaning, because I don't have to think about what to do with all the clutter first.
It is not so much about having as little as possible - it is about having the appropriate amount of things for the space, and a functional system to keep it organised.

She still owns a ton. Having kids isn't minimalist, it's a real problem, especially with the climate crisis. People in the imperialist core shouldn't be breeding. Check out Small Changes, another "minimalist" but with a shit ton of kids. But her house is the most minimalist I've seen for a "family." The "nuclear" family is so fucking capitalist. Read Engels on the origin of the family and private property. Booj as fuck.

I like bins. It helps with adhd, and “pantry blindness.” My kids can go to the snack bin, bread bin, breakfast bin, whatever, and see what’s available without being distracted by the whole of the pantry. It’s also great for sticky things like syrup or honey to be in those clear bins. And lastly, a lovely pantry is inspiring and peaceful. We all need inspiration and peace.

    I’m so proud of you.
My mom lived with us for 10 years. She moved into senior citizen housing in March and I’m now free to declutter and discard things she pressured me to keep. I’ve been on a decluttering journey for 6 months. I’ve taken at least 4 pick-up truck loads of items for donation. I have a box in my pantry and I’m constantly putting items in it. Once it hits the box then I don’t invite it back and I drop a box or two off every time I’m headed to the city as we live in a very rural area.
I’m constantly touching new areas in my home, garage and barn. In the past 6 months my garbage can has been full every week but two. We are on a journey to use up cleaning and personal products. In the end, the stuff didn’t come to our farm overnight so it will take a period of time to clean it up.

Actually, as I have gotten older, I find it hard to reach the things that are overhead. I cannot believe your bins for the children's clothes that need to be washed are over the top of the washing machines. Getting up on a stool is dangerous as you get older. And sometimes, we shrink as we get older which makes reaching overhead more of a challenge.

My husband never got that until I was so sick, I had to stay in bed for 3 days. He kept the kids and dogs alive, so I'm good with that. But oh the mess my house became! He realized that I spend a LOT of time every day cleaning up! And he became thankful! Great video! I feel inspired to finally tackle my crazy pantry! It took time for me to work in my clothes closet but I never made a pile. Now it's simpler for me to pick out what I'm going to wear. I don't like having a lot of clothes. I've been decluttering since January 2023 and it is definitely a process. I would never recommend making a pile. Smaller chunks is easier to deal with. I'm 60 years old and I need life simplified and I don't want my children dealing with a bunch of my belongings after I'm gone. Decluttering has been so good for me. I'm even downsizing what I hang on the walls, less for me to dust 👍I know there is more I can do; one day at a time.

I overcame being a hoarder by getting 2 things a day out of my 3 storage lockers, basement, and garage for 7 years except in the most brutal winter months. It doesn't matter if it is a chair or a pillowcase or a pain absolutely every single day I have to get rid of two things I no longer have any storage lockers I have an empty basement and an empty bedroom I don't even keep things in the closet I just use a coat tree.. I just have about one-third of my garage. Anybody visiting my home would think that my home is actually quite normal...except that all but 1 small cupboard has anything in it..The others are all empty... I'm on my way to becoming a minimalist😅

I used to live alone and I was never an organized person. Everything was pilled everywhere, it was hard to clean, I couldn't find anything. But everytime I tried to declutter, I couldn't get rid of things. I had a box with a bunch of papers and broken stuff because I told myself I would repair, I could use later for this and that. I had so, so many clothes, and I couldn't let them go. So I moved with my boyfriend last year, but the thing is that we lived like 30 minutes apart from each other and neither of us have cars, so we had to move stuff by carrying (either walking there or taking a bus) or paying someone to carry it for us (and we are broke students, so....). What this is means is that what was and wasn't important got clear really quickly, becase the more stuff I wanted to keep, more 1h+ trips were needed to be taken. I can't remember half of the things I got rid of, I never missed them. This opened my eyes and made me focus on what is essential.

Agree 100%, the dates on tins are best before dates, not use by. I have a section where I keep out of date food and I use it asap, applying the system from my childhood. You examine it, if it looks ok you sniff it, if it smells ok you taste it, if it tastes ok you eat it. Once a tin/packet is opened, follow the above steps before deciding to bin it! I rarely have to throw any away, the exception is ones packed in flimsier plastic that can sometimes taste stale. If the tin is in good condition with no dents or rust, the food inside is usually perfectly good to eat.

Whenever someone asks me to fix their pantry or linen closet or whatever space, I take out one or two things at a time and put them in designated spots. Then, when the messy area is empty, clean. Then once I can see how much there is in each category, I can see how to put each thing where it goes. The big piles of mess is too overwhelming.

I love seeing how you originally organized under your sink and how it is now. I have a tiny container of make up. I would have suggested putting the guest stuff in the guest room closet or under the bed. I ended up turning my extra spare room into a multi purpose room after my daughter finally moved out. The guest bed is in living room, I have a sleeper sofa. I just put the sheets and blankets back on the bed after I wash them. I’m thinking about getting some pillows and putting them in vacuum sealed bags and storing them on the bed also. My husband and I each have 2 towels apiece and I’m still trying to figure out where to put guest towels. Mostly, it’s just my grandkids using the bed and towels.

Re the pantry. I prefer to be able to see what my canned goods etc are. I’d be inclined to add shelves to fit the products rather than put things in baskets. I’ve also put all the things like raisins, rice, beans in clear jars so I can see what they are on the shelf.

Love this video! So helpful and so motivating! We’re moving, so I’m currently drowning in boxes 😂, but you have me motivated to declutter & declutter when we unpack (I’ve decluttered as I’ve been packing boxes but I know there will be more to declutter) and then put in simple organizing systems for the new house 💗

I have to say you probably need a tea bag organizer. I love mine and I can easily see what I have.
Also, depending on the food it probably was fine to eat. Shelf stable foods are good way longer than they say they are on the package. Even the FDA says they aren’t a true indication of time.

I just started using the pantry check app to help keep an inventory of all the food in our house. It takes some getting used to going in and deleting and adding things, but I’ve loved it. It helps you see what’s about to expire and I use it to meal plan around that. It holds 200 items for free, after that is a paid version, but I’m doing a free trial for like 2 months before committing to it and you don’t have to enter credit card info for the free trial.

I like that you broke down your work in chunks and peaces. The first thing I recognized as I did this with our flat (and I am still not done)is, that it is overwhealming and frustrating to pile all and then going through it. So I start every time with a corner (or as you said „a project“) and work through the topic until I am satisfied. And it can be that it takes several days. But that does not matter as long as I see progress even in little things. The good news are: the often you do this the more you will get a routine and a view for what you really need and what has to go 😀

The most eye-opening thing you showed me is that a normal sized laundry basket cannot work in a laundry room this size! I have the same teal boxes in my garage…same! I will move them to the laundry room! I am so excited about this and looking forward to my laundry room not being a mess! Thank you so much!

Watch Joshua Becker! He does short videos on how to do it so you don’t get burnt out & make it a permanent sustainable life change versus just a phase.
    😊😊
But watch Joshua Becker! He Changed my life with just a few sentences. It’s about creating a peaceful space but also helping your budget. Almost everyone has excess funds, they’re just spending it. For example, ladies if you have as much nail polish and makeup as the lady in this vidoe, you’re wasting money. Beaty products expire before we use them all. Whatever you run out of

I am on the journey to get organized / declutter and get upset with myself . Just recently I have been realizing this is a journey not an immediate fix. I also have ADHD so my new way of dealing with things is to do 1 area or category at a time example jewelry. This seems to work well for me.

A wide-mouthed canning jar funnel, sold in large hardware stores with the canning jar supplies, makes it easier to pour items into the jars. I use mine constantly, worth having (and I'm not a shopper.) Call the store ahead and see if they sell them.
