@@seeleygirl6178I loved the video. 22 years in my space, but the fact that she let us in on the dilemma’s and the timelines was still helpful.
Considering size and time, maybe we could run a calculation. She has …500sf? (Can’t recall exactly). And needed 7 days. So for me @ 22 years, or 264 months: 1/2 day X # months= 132 days. My living space is 900sf, plus the entire basement and a small garage with more stuff, so based on actual use of non living spaces, let’s say 1500sf. So 132 days x 3 (using 500 sf as her apt size, and rounding my sq footage considering storage)= 396 days.
That seems like way too much to bite off, so I’m going to use this estimate to forgive myself for needing time, and break it into manageable chunks of closet, kitchen, storage closets, etc., plus hire help, for example for the garage and basement.

@@Trenchant468 I don't mean this in a mean way, but hearing this makes me so grateful I don't have a basement, limited attic space, and only a one-car garage that I am meticulous about not letting get out of control (I have reorganized my parents' two garage and attic multiple times, ugh). I am not judging people who have basements, but it seems to me, as someone who has never lived in an area where basements are possible, that unless they are finished living spaces, basements just become scary dumping grounds. Is this the case for most basement owners? Just curious. We are too low-lying with a high water table and swamps for basements where I live on the southeast coast of the U.S.

This is so realistic. U didn’t need to buy bunch of new organizers just to declutter, clean up, and organize your things. You made use of what’s available and what you already have. You also showed that you need to invest time and effort to do this and it’s okay to take it one day at a time. This video motivated me to clean and declutter my room and our living room, thank you so much this video!

You are not a trash hoarder. You are a responsible person who doesn't want to be wasteful. This will help you in the future to accumulate less unnecessary stuff. Also, if you keep up regular decluttering over time, giving away stuff others can still use is much easier because it's just a couple of things here and there. You did great with this big reset!

Decluttering has helped me take stock of what is important to me over time. First time I did a large declutter, it was mostly stuff I had accumulated over the years that had lost their connection to me in the present. It was like finding myself in all this stuff I had. So now what I do have reflects me and makes me happier, even if it still seems like a lot at times. I also have a better understanding of what I enjoy so when I purchase new things they stick around longer and I don't need as much.

I am a massive sentimental hoarder and a “what if I need it” hoarder but I loved when you said that you could always repurchase something if you ever needed it/wanted it in the future but right now you don’t. I definitely get the box/packaging hoarding! One thing I'll say - I regret getting rid of certain types of gift bags, shipping paper and good tissue paper, but I never regret getting rid of old boxes and styrofoam. When it comes to giftwrap, anything that's sparkly or shiny isn't recyclable. If I can reuse packaging paper as giftwrap, it's recyclable for the giftee and relieves some of that guilt in a purposeful way :).
In regard to recycling - I was a recycling educator for two years and have been in the sustainability industry for 12. If any viewers aren't sure what they can recycle, please remember NOT to recycle according to what the packaging says (kudos to tofu goob for educating herself and knowing little strips of paper aren't recyclable!). Recycling is LOCAL and varies. Check out your recycle hauler's website, municipality site, and local advocacy group info. Tons of good info, just not from product manufacturers :(
If you're feeling a lot of guilt about your waste stream, try to shop your home first, then hit the thrift stores before buying new (both options are 100% guilt free)

I tried starting my decluttering journey March 2023 when I had a full week off of work. I agree, I regret taking that time to do that rather than just not be stressed out. I also only went through my clothes and books in that week. I got rid of 90 books and 4-5 bags of clothes but then I also struggled with how to get rid of them and it wasn't until July I finally had a garage sale, took them to a used clothes donation place and sold my books at the used bookstore. Now it's getting to be the end of the year and this video has motivated me to remember the rest of my house and just go for it!

There are places (sometimes bins or clothing stores depending on where you are geographically) were you can take you unusable fabrics like destroyed shoes or holey socks and they'll be recycled! I clicked the 'new to me' button and this video came up when i'm two weeks deep into decluttering my stuff, so I was already decluttering but it felt really reassuring to watch you declutter and hear you complain about the same things I complain about, like cleaning invisible spaces! I call it 'invisible cleaning', and it's so frustrating to spend hours doing invisible cleaning and see no progress! it's so funny how similar this looks to my decluttering process. i'm also a plant person and i felt guilty about some of the plants i was clinging to for some reason, but it feels so good to let them go, and somehow I also accumulated so many planters! it's more inspirational than i thought it would be to watch someone else declutter. it's nice to see that there's an END to this!

As a bit of a "collector of things" I really feel inspired by this video to do some decluttering of my own. And I have to say that you are likeable and entertaining to watch even when you do something like this that some people might think would be boring to watch. I'm not an artist myself but I subscribed because you have a kind of vibe and attitude that I need more of in my life 😊

I am the same as you when it comes to throwing things away, even if it is literal trash (you can only imagine the amount of plastic cutlery and chopsticks I have in my kitchen drawers). My #1 tip is to put this same energy when you purchase things, I.e., how often will I use this? do I have a place for it in my home? does it give me joy? And am I just consuming because I am feeling sad today?
Decluttering by stopping the flow of overconsumption 🤝

Yes on the guilt! I feel the same way. This was really supportive to watch as someone creative. I also don't use the term 'get rid' as much as possible and try to say 'pass on' so I understand that my well kept items will make someone very happy. Equally, the trash items that come in packaging are so sad to toss :(

I want to thank you for this super realistic declutter video. I identify so hard with the guilt you feel over getting rid of individual items, and how overwhelming it can feel to go through stuff and decide on each item. Sometimes I feel somewhat emotionally attached to items and it makes it so difficult to get rid of stuff. Like maybe some trinkets people bought me, or a birthday gift. They were thinking of me when they bought it, so how could I possibly get rid of it?! But I've been doing really well at breaking through that type of thing and I'm working on decluttering my entire house. Thank you so much for being raw and honest and real about what real-life decluttering can look and feel like!!

I think you spoke very well on why it can be hard to throw stuff away - the mental load of figuring out how, the emotional load of wasting/saying goodbye… it’s always easier in the moment just to kick that can down the road, but that’s not always the best for us in the lomg run.
    Well done!

This was so satisfying to watch, thanks for taking us along on your declutter journey! You did such a great job!
I too suffer guilt for getting rid of perfectly good things that I'll "maybe" use someday (and then never do) because it is "wasteful." I let this habit consume my tiny living spaces for years until I was approaching age 40 and my mid-life crisis culminated in the form of a HUGE DECLUTTER of everything I had accumulated during my entire life, pretty much all the way back to childhood. It took about a year but I did it and felt all the anxiety melt away. Now all of the things I own hold value or I use frequently, not because I feel an obligation to keep it. And after such an exhausting ordeal, I developed a daily/monthly habit of auditing my space for the donation/recycle pile. And I cull that dang box collection once a month, too, because that habit never goes away!
Here's a couple ideas I learned to trick my brain:
    1) Holding onto trash in my place isn't saving it from the landfill... it's only delaying its trip to the landfill. It's gonna go there when I die anyway, so I might as well not make it my freeloading roommate who doesn't even contribute to the rent bill but takes up all my space.
    2) My apartment is not a storage facility. If things are living untouched in boxes so long that I forget I own them, then clearly it can leave my life without any impact.
    3) If the items are something I haven't used in years, imagine how much joy that item could have been bringing to someone else all this time instead of sitting in my closet. This actually helps me to donate my art supplies fairly regularly when I know I've lost interest in them but they're still usable. I imagine some young artist finding nice art supplies for cheap/free that maybe they wouldn't have had access to otherwise.

I’m going to be 50 in a week and I have so much stuff!!! From grandparents, divorces, my children’s things, etc. You are so young and so smart to try and get used to doing this now. I’m one of those that doesn’t like to waste or throw out things. I’m horrible at it. And the longer I’ve kept an item, the more attached I get. I still have some of my childhood toys!!!!! So you’ve given me inspiration, just seeing a roomy closet was so satisfying! Keep it up! ❤

I am a bit of a hoarder myself, but I declutter regularly (books, shopping bags, gift boxes, puzzles...)
What worked for me was to pack a box of stuff I didn't need anymore, write a nice message on it and put it in front of my house. (I live in a rather poor neighbourhood, e.g. there is a halfway house right next to me), and there is hardly ever anything left.

Honestly this is one of the realest videos I've seen in a long time. I'm so incredibly proud of for taking these steps to realistically clean up and organize. I used to be the same person: "I don't want to waste this." "I'll find a use for this one day." Etc. Yeahhh, well, fast forward to now: I never found a use for the stuff I kept, and/or I forgot about that stuff.
Side note: are you a part of the neurodivergent family like me? It'd explain a lot of what you do why you do. I'm autistic (ASD), ADHD, and OCD. :3
Side note 2: And speaking of neurodivergence, would you mind lowering the audio on the parts where you vacuum and do other forms of cleaning or anything that involves very loud, high-pitched, unpleasant sounds? o.e People with audio sensory issues (including myself) will greatly thank you. It was pretty triggering to hear those sounds and made me wanna click off the video initially, but I really wanted to support you, so I just heeeeeeeeeeeeella turned down the volume the entire video (womp womp ;c).

I feel like I can really relate to you in terms of the things you keep excess off, the things that are hard to get rid of, and the reasons you end up keeping things. I also have my packaging materials hoard and random plastic tidbits because I have to take them all the way to a store that recycles plastic film. So I found this super useful. Things I'm taking away from your example include leaving sorting the "Things to Get Rid Of" to the end and also remembering to not prepare too far in advance for the seasons I'm not in yet. Thank you so much for sharing!

Intentional buying is a big part of the decluttering process. Bringing things into your space from now on that are purposeful and quality can mean you buy a lot less, but attach more meaning to those new things so they last you longer as well.

PRO TIP: I'm not sure where you're located, but near me, we have a place called SCRAP Creative Reuse, which would take things like those Barre bands and boxes and bra pads and anything that makes you think "someone could use this for something." SCRAP has several locations around the US, so they might have one near you!
