As a professional, do you see just laminate flooring on steps often, or do you feel it is too slippery for stairs, as someone else mentioned. I’m not fond of carpet personally, due to the dust it harbors, but for steps, I did laminate flooring and then a 2’ carpet runner down the middle, for safety purposes only, as the person I installed it for was elderly, and I was concerned with her falling. Didn’t turn out too bad honestly, and she was happy I thought of her safety when I convinced her to go with the runner.
@@19jody72 totally agree. Wasn’t my choice, it was the homeowners, but being the one to install it, I wasn’t going to take the chance liability wise, especially with her age, so I’m glad I was able to talk her into the carpet runner. The only stairs I ever put laminate on to date, and the last for sure. lol.
If this guy works in your area, HIRE HIM! I have spent 25yrs in flooring & securing a craftsman like this is a find. Well done if you ever need work I could keep you busy every day you want to work, your skill is worth whatever your price is. Great work and attention to detail.
This is one of the most informative step by step guide I have come across for laminated flooring. I can't help but think that this guy really does look like Kevin Owen in WWE!
Around town where I live there are quite a few stair shops that specialize in making square nosings out of basically any type of flooring to match the rest of your floor. The back of the nosing is left with the original locking edge so all you do is cut a plank to complete the depth of your tread and boom! your tread is perfectly flush, perfectly color matched and you can order your desired nose overhang. Also I’d definitely recommend to use a more heavy duty adhesive that doesn’t dry hard and cracks like wood glue
I learned about these local options too that my flooring dealer made me aware of. The only problem is that this doesn’t work well for laminate and vinyl. The mitered edges that are necessary inevitably end up with super sharp corners (which will also be fragile) or gaps with exposed MDF below the finished surface. The sales guy agreed this isn’t ideal for laminate/vinyl because you have to address this gap with a commercial-grade wax crayon to match the finish. This does work really well, however, for engineered hardwood floors. Especially ones with thick enough of a veneer. You can even route out a tiny round-overed edge and it would be perfect. For laminate/vinyl, not so much.
@@mrvvoo That’s actually very surprising to me. What city are you in? I’m in Seattle area and the shop that I use makes them out of pretty much every type of flooring including lvp and laminate. And they ease the edges of mitered corners and color match with special blended stain in a way that it looks and feels like a solid piece of material. It sounds like the guys you’re using just aren’t using appropriate tools to manufacture them 🤔
I have a watched a ton of DIY videos. You do a great job walking the entire project with just the right balance. Keep up the good work. Thank you, I am subscribing.
Nice job young man. I first started doing laminate flooring on stairs 24 years ago when PERGO laminate flooring was just becoming popular. I remember being a little intimidated on my first set of stairs as I had never done them before in laminate.. Now I can do them in my sleep. They are very simple to do once you get it down. The only time they get involved is if you have railings and spindles with open stairs on one side or both. This means you have to remove the railings and spindles, hole saw precise holes on the sides of your treads for the spindles to go back in after the tread is installed. You also have to 45 your front and side pieces of stair nose molding very precisely and then put the spindles and railing back together. One wrong hole or cut and you will be pulling your hair out doing the tread over!!!
The only thing to keep in mind is building codes… most USA States adopt International Residential code. Per those standards stair treads need to be at least 10 inch from riser. If you build out your riser, you might not be compliant with code.
Real simple straight through no music, one of the best I've seen on UA-cam. And at Floor and Decor I ask a contractor and an associate about doing the steps and they went into a diatribe. Great....I hate using the metal strip....over time it does come loose(5 years later came loose in a job)if somebody kicks it. By accident .it flys off...flood it with liquid nails and use finish screws....not nails screws...you can tell tju e fill but make it look as part of the design...works every time.
Same here, they don’t last. I do not like this system with the junk bull nose. It’s actually cheaper and easier to use the oak treads with the built in bullnose and design. Plus the real wood just looks better.
Thank you for this vid. Currently working on my floors and I've been wondering how am I gonna do the stairs when I get there. Now is I know. Very well explained as well. Stairs turned out really well. awesome job!
Looks great. However when video ends, looking down from the top, if you are not familiar with house you can't differentiate the steps from flooring at lower level, Potential Trip Hazard. In which case you may want to use a different shade of stair nosing but complimentary to flooring to highlight steps. Like on ramps to highlight between 1/2 landings and the ramp itself. (Yes I know I work in construction and don't walk by is the mantra to all site safety)
This is very helpful! I'm getting ready to do my stairs and I was wondering if I should cut off the existing toe kicks. But after watching this I now know which option I'm going to go with. Love the track idea for the stair nosing and that you used different cuts of laminate for your risers. I thought that had to look the same. Thanks for the great tips.👍👊
Awesome! Glad I could help. I like the look of the variety it gives with different cuts on the risers. Good luck on your project! I'd love to see it when you're done
Much appreciated for the good advice. Installing laminate in basement floor and was contemplating the 13 stairs to the basement. Originally planned to do carpet but may do laminate hoping I have enough left over. Cheers fellow Canuck
You did very good job. How I wish he use the same idea as you did your stairs. My stairs it isn’t done yet but he didn’t put any glue to prevent squeaking.. my stairs squeak .. hope that easy to re do it but it isn’t easy money wise .
man, u were born to do this video!!! im attempting finishing my new mobile home on my own. finished all the floor except for a single step between my living room and my kitchen. is it the same principle?
Informative video. It’s probably good you left the gold linoleum as the really old stuff had asbestos in it and you don’t want to mess with it. 👍 looks great. Any concerns that the bullnose edge is higher where it overlaps the tread? I would be concerned that you could trip over that edge.
Thanks! Typically the stairs are the last thing to do so you are making due with scraps anyways, might as well use them up. Plus any seams will just match the rest of the room anyways, just only make sure to do seams on the risers and not the steps if you can avoid it to avoid any potential squeaky spots over time

I have a full stair case to do these coming days and this gave me ideas to do it a lot faster and practical
Awesome! Glad I could help. A full staircase will be a chore lol, but good luck
@@JessedoesDIY definitely lol but this video gave more a little more confidence
That's my hope
I have carpet on my stairs that needs to go. Pets and kids are hard on carpet and cleaning only goes so far. I really want to do something like this and i have the skills, just not the tools and time. Thank you for this. Some times being an adult is realizing you need a professional
Absolutely, I completely understand. And as an adult, sometimes it's hard to ask lol
@JessedoesDIY plus a professional won't have my kids running up every 2 seconds going "daddy!" Haha
BEAUTIFUL JOB.
GETTING READY AND LEARNING HOW TO PERFORMANCE THIS JOB.
THANKS JELP ME A LOT .
Thanks! Happy to help. Good luck on yours!
Nothing scientific? I beg to differ!
Clearly you are demonstrating the science of physics here!
Great video too.
Lol thanks!
Thank you so much! It is v helpful for first time DIY. Because of your video, I was able to do my stairs.
That's awesome! I'm half I could help and pumped you gave it a go. I'd love to see it and share it
Great....I hate using the metal strip....over time it does come loose(5 years later came loose in a job)if somebody kicks it.
No prob! Glad I could help. Good luck with it. Send me pics when you're done and I'll feature it if you want
Really great video. Now I’m ready to start my job. Thx bro!
Anytime, thanks
Looks great. However when video ends, looking down from the top, if you are not familiar with house you can't differentiate the steps from flooring at lower level, Potential Trip Hazard. In which case you may want to use a different shade of stair nosing but complimentary to flooring to highlight steps. Like on ramps to highlight between 1/2 landings and the ramp itself. (Yes I know I work in construction and don't walk by is the mantra to all site safety)
I very much appreciate this video - you do a very good job of explaining the steps clearly - Bravo!
Thank you! Glad it comes across, that was my hope.
@13:29 I thought you had the power of thor in your hands and you were shaking the whole house, till I realised it was just the camera moving.
Haha I wish
Great post, very descriptive with good photography and narration!!!
I live in an appartement and don't have stairs, but this was super entertaining
Lol awesome, thanks
Thanks. This is super helpful. Decided to do my steps because of you.
Cool! Glad I could help. Good luck, if you need help just ask
Very informative and well explained in details, very inspiring as well. Thank you.
Thanks so much! Happy to help! Thanks for watching
@@JessedoesDIY okay I will put up a photo.
Thank you for the great content, I have a 12-step staircase to do. Get after it.
No prob. That'll be a big job, good luck
Much appreciated for the good advice. Installing laminate in basement floor and was contemplating the 13 stairs to the basement. Originally planned to do carpet but may do laminate hoping I have enough left over. Cheers fellow Canuck
That will be a big job. Good luck tho, keep me posted
Thanks, I appreciate it! Yeah, basically the same. Good luck on yours
Informative video. It’s probably good you left the gold linoleum as the really old stuff had asbestos in it and you don’t want to mess with it. 👍 looks great. Any concerns that the bullnose edge is higher where it overlaps the tread? I would be concerned that you could trip over that edge.
No concerns to me anyways, after a couole days you honestly don't even know it's there, its really under a quarter inch or so higher
Surprised that this is the only comment mentioning this. Regular diy people dont know this and may possible end up removing asbestos.
great video.Sort of thinking start with a full width board at the top of the stairs then work back into the room..saves any small infill pieces
Thanks! Typically the stairs are the last thing to do so you are making due with scraps anyways, might as well use them up. Plus any seams will just match the rest of the room anyways, just only make sure to do seams on the risers and not the steps if you can avoid it to avoid any potential squeaky spots over time
