@@TheDIYGuy1 Omg creaky floors yes please. Have an 8 year old new build. One bedroom in particular creaks like hell when walking on it. Would appreciate it! 😬
Great creek fix! As for the carpet replacement I’d 100% recommend getting it re installed under tension again, and a sharp edged bolster like that one will really easily punch through the carpet if there’s any resistance get that on again
Excellent video, this channel has gone from strength to strength, such vast content on this channel, theres something for every homeowner here to save them some money.
Awesome, that’s the name of the game. Eventually I’d love to have a catalogue of content that is so broad almost every key diy job is covered on the channel. We’ve a way to go yet though 😃
You said you hope it would be helpful but to be honest I live in a new build flat and won't have that problem... I just like seeing how to fix shit in case I need to do anything in the future! Good explanation bud!
This is my next job once the bathroom is done. Tried bracing from underneath which helped a bit, but these 90's builds use MDF for the risers and they're shocking tbh. I like the idea of screwing the tread to riser from above. Already got my fav 5 min glue ready!!
This works a treat if you’ve got old chipboard flooring that was only nailed down and is now bouncy/creaking. Watered down PVA in the joints and decent flooring screws.
Could have done with this about 2 months ago but luckily came up with the same method. My stairs also had 2 triangular blocks between the tread and the riser that we screwed into as well. I found that at as I purchased an inspection camera that attaches to your mobile from Amazon and drilled a couple of small holes in the riser and poked it through. One of my risers was also split into 3 so repair it be adding 4 or 5 metal plates. It's probably one of the stronger treads now. And as carpet went down on top it's hidden from view.
Thanks for this. Was going to do much more complicated re-fix, but this seems easier and more efficient. Just wondered about the chance of splittng the bull nose edge away on the tread surface with older timber. My home is 50 years old now, and one is already split. Is there any trusty way to reduce the chance of splitting off the bull-nose edge? Thanks 🙂
Ive not got a new carpet for the stairs yet as ive got to plaster the hall and stair walls but ill be sure to do this before i get the new carpet in. Its also a great time to get fresh underlay too to make the stairs feels more squishy again.
Cheers for this one my stairs are so loud when they have settled at night and I come down in the morning walking right on the edges of the tread 😂.keep the great content coming.cheers again.
Genius Sir, I salute you. But I don't think many standard people would be able to proceed with the repair you've demonstrated. When can you come around Bro.? Tea ☕ and biscuits included 😊.
Great video. I would love to see a video on how to fix creaking floorboards. I have tried to repair mine myself but I'm concerned about nailing into pipes etc. Talc has failed and I can't get the old nails out!
Excellent vid , very useful 👍 I need to do this to my staircase . My stairs look exactly the same as yours with the old paint on the steps and risers lol ! I have cut the bullnose off and am gonna laminate my stairs . I bought a staircase template jig . Just wanted to know if i need to sand all that old paint off or can i leave it ? I am gonna use CT1 adhesive and want it to adhere to the laminate ! Many thanks for your advice , much appreciated 👍
Never done stairs before , thanks helpful my sons just brought a flat ! With stairs !! This vid will defo help Ps whats the make the "5 minute glue? " cheers
Was literally doing some work on my stairs, sat down to have a cuppa and your video popped up 😂 great timing, can I ask if the screws are anything specific? You mentioned 50mm long but no other details, any info is greatly appreciated
Good video I got called to a job a month or so ago where a tradesman had “repaired” a staircase using ovals! Needless to say they started to creak in a matter of months, I used the same method as you by the way. PS what’s the deal with the new coating on turbogold screws! 22karat I reckon😄👍🏻
Thank you for explaining how to fix creaky stairs, I would like to say I live in a very old house and because of the creaks on my kitchen door and stairs I was able to realise a burglar had entered my home. I immediately called police and shouted out they were on their way! There’s no way now I would fix any squeaks or creaks, but appreciate knowing how it can be fixed.
Asked our joiner to fix our creaky stairs whilst he was putting up a new banister, after he’d fixed the creak he said now you won’t hear a murderer coming up the stairs now, thanks for that! 😮
I started off with this but unfortunately turned out to be wedges in the treads / risers that were loose or had completely fallen out (100 year old house), had to take the plasterboard off at the back but after glueing them back in place no more creaks!
You should also glue and pin a scotia under the nosing connecting nosing to the riser, as the glue blocks on the underside of the stairs may have come loose or fallen off.
I remember watching a documentary a couple decades ago and a couple with a really old cottage used to hear the stairs at night when they were in bed, they would hear 13 steps coming up the stairs but they only had 12 stairs, on further investigation they found the ground floor had been raised so originally there was 13 stairs 😶😉😬
It’s a bit weird but our stairs creek in the summer and not in the winter! What’s going on there do you think? My guess with central heating on the humidity drops causing the stairs to dry out a bit. I suspect if I’m to fix it I should do it in summer?
Great video, but I've found our staircase doesn't have rebates, and the riser and tread just butt up against each other (or don't quite reach!) both under the tread and at the bottom of the riser! 1930s semi. I can see previous attempts to fix the squeaks by filling these gaps. How do i fix this design?
I swear you read my mind 😂 was thinking about tiling then you realise a tiling video. Then I’m thinking about my noisy stairs and you realise this video 😂😂
Straight to the point with no additional crap! I repaired mine a few months before this video exactly the same way.
Awesome! Nice work
I love these UK DIY channels, money, headache and time savers for sure.
Glad to help out
I cannot tell you how long I have been waiting for a video like this so I can fix my stairs at home too!!! Awesome 👌
+1 to this. Next one for the creaky floor please 😄

Don't use pva. Use d 4 polyurethane glue. You can buy on mastic sized tubes

Yep will do that for you!
It's been done on certain 'other' channels. (Don't won't to steal your thunder Mr DIY guy 😆)
@@TheDIYGuy1 preferably where you can maybe not pull up the old floorboards or they aren’t even
Thanks, I'll be doing all of those tips

Now do a video on a reoccurring crack on the join between the stairs and plasterboard.
Feel free to use my stairs in the video 😂😂
Haha! It’s certainly do able 😁
Excellent stuff!
Very good, though modern stairs only have a 5mm thick ply riser, so screws will miss or worse split the wood.

Any vids on how to help stop or reduce bouncing in lamanated flooring after it's been laid?
Now it looks just like my staircase 😂. Going to work on it next week
It is fascinating in the uk and ireland you have been making these stairs in the same way for centuries without any improvements
OK, that task looks a lot less intimidating now. Might give it a go as our creaking staircase drives me nuts, especially as I go up it at night.
You should also glue and pin a scotia under the nosing connecting nosing to the riser, as the glue blocks on the underside of the stairs may have come loose or fallen off.
Helps if carpet fitters screw grippers instead of nailing them. I usually leave a note on the stairs after fitted to remind them

Would floor tite screws be the way to go or just standard wood screws?
No specific screws needed. The ones in the video are just screwfix gold screws

Is there a rule for drilling pilot holes. I never know what size is appropriate for different size screws
