A personal tip; when I installed my quarter round, use a thin piece of cardboard or similar spacer to allow the floor to expand/contract without touching the quarter round or toe board. It also allows the use of tape, or wide putty knife, under the quarter round if you need to paint it without touching the flooring.

    A couple of points that I found helpful when I installed laminate flooring for the first time.
    I removed all of the baseboards and I numbered them on the back, I then made a sketch of the room and I wrote the number of the baseboard on the sketch in the position I removed it. This made it easier to reinstall the baseboards.
    My baseboards were stained and varnished oak and after 20 years they got scuffed up so I used this opportunity to refinish them. All I did was clean and lightly sand them and then I used a combination stain and varnish.
    When I used a jigsaw I purchased reverse cut blades. (blades that cut on the downstroke instead of the upstroke, this way the cut did not mar the finished side.
    I also purchase flooring that had the foam pad attached, less work not having to lay down a pad.
    On very long runs I used about 3 inches of duct tape to hold the boards together so they did not snap apart.
    Any area that the boards might come into contact with water (around the kitchen sink, under the dishwasher, bathroom, near exterior doors, etc.) I used waterproof glue so if they got wet they would not warp. They now have vinyl boards so I don't think the water damage is an issue if you use them.

      I love laminate flooring because its more durable and scratch and dent resistant than vinyl. Sadly, LVPs are probably are still better for bathrooms due to the them being "waterproof" (some WPC LVPs can still be damaged by excessive water). Laminates require a little extra TLC for bathrooms because of that ambient moisture. Sealing those expansion joints at your tub/showers and the like. A good modern Laminate can be wet or steam mopped, but if water gets underneath it into the wood core, it will eventually damage it.
      That is a great suggestion for the baseboards, I will see if my installers do that, and if not suggest it. With nice wood baseboards like you had, pulling them is relatively low risk.. but for people who have cheaper mdf or plastic ones, they need to be pretty gentle or they may break. Those are more common in stick homes today.

    Choosing the direction of the boards should also take into account where the light source of the room is. Boards should be placed along the light, since placing them perpendicular to the light will bring out any streaks left behind by mopping.

      Thank you, I appreciate you watching :). As far as the movements, I don't disagree at all, I like to look at each manufacturer notes. Since I am making a video, I don't want to say what I think. The manufacturer knows their product very well, so for good practice, I want to stay within the parameters. I am not sure how it will perform in other parts of the world. In Florida, I don't see much movements. The manufacturer recommends 5/16-3/8in for the expansion gap. On all sides, :/. Since I am doing it for a client/ my neighbor, I don't want it to come back and bit me.

    When I splice a piece of shoe in to make it longer I use a 22.5 miter cut, it's even less noticeable than a 45, and also on inside corners I run one piece of shoe flush with no miter cut all the way to the wall, and cut the other piece with a 45 and use a coping saw to notch out along that line where the bare wood and paint meet, makes for a better look, and makes cauking go alot faster.

      So now, after 5 minutes of watching the video, you are ready to install a new floor for yourself or someone else, but don't get carried away. Better not try because you can easily lose your fingers, I worked for 30 years as a carpenter and on the bulletin board we wrote how many days have passed without anyone getting injured and usually 2-3 injuries happen a year to experienced people every day they use power tools and after 5 minutes of video you would get to work

  • @Fakederrickk
    @Fakederrickk 5 років тому +23

    I thought it wasn't obvious from the video but you need to put spacers on all sides... If some plaster has been laid (huge humidity changes), don't place the skirting yet, wait 2-3 weeks and see how it settles, you might need to cut again.
    And this one is also from my neighbour, don't glue them on the ground !! He bought some laminate floor with a hardwood top, he asked the seller if it was alright to glue them because he was resurfacing a tile floor... The seller said YES. Always check with the manufacturer if you're not 100% sure, the seller might never have worked with that exact product. What happens is that when the floor expands, weaker point will lift but the stronger areas will prevent the floor from expanding which will result in lifting.
    Most laminate floor have a print on the top which is covered by a thin layer to protect it; it's not wood, you can't sand it to restore it. If you want it too last, prevent scratches from chairs and furnitures by adding pads and if a blunt object falls and damages the surface, if you want to repair it put floor fill that is colour matched.

    • @Fakederrickk
      @Fakederrickk 5 років тому

      @Cleveland Indian Check where the floor is touching the wall after removing the baseboards and cut using a oscillating tool, wait for the floor to settle and check if you need to do it again. You might need to do it 2 or 3 times.
      I hope it isn't glued...

    Nice work. Love that you are a conscientious worker and took the time to ensure you checked and prepared the area well and that when done you cleaned up and left perfect, not dirty and messy.
    On the transition, I recently had to do a transition into concrete and, I can tell you from experience, that can be zero fun and time consuming. You can not always install the metal track and get matching t-molding. I recently had to custom make the transition, stain to match, use concrete anchors and screws through the face covered with face-grain plugs and touched up two hide and blend in. What made this particularly time consuming is that it was not a 3' doorway but 24 linear feet transitioning from a dinning room to a hallway / walkway.
    Oh, and I do prefer to take the cut-off from each row to start the next row, it keeps the seams inconsistent and makes it look more random, like a hardwood floor. But, your strategy is also a fine one and gives a great look.
    Finally, one question, did you create another space on the opposite wall or with laminate do you think the one 3/16, or whatever the width of the laminate is as a space, is sufficient?
