Secondly, in what universe do you think it acceptable to be arrested (or worse) for simply pointing out facts about Dubai? Very relevant and down to earth explanations. Having lived there for 7 years, and since VAT came on board, I guess I will be nostalgic of the old days where Jebel Ali Village was still there and Ibn Battuta was just opening. Having said that, I would recommend anyone the experience of going there for a week/ten days break. Once you'll have touched down the ground, you'll know that you will be aiming for an amazing and unforgettable experience. Enjoy!

Today, again I travel frequently between India and Europe, mostly via Muscat,Dubai or Abu Dhabi and enjoy the changes.

It's difficult to generalize about the realities of living in Dubai. There is an unspoken class system based on nationality and how wealthy you are (or not). If you're an Emirati, you have more rights and privileges than if you're an expat. If you're from the West (Europe, US, Canada), you will have access to better jobs and salaries than if you're from the East (India, Pakistan, Philippines). Seeing the labourers working and being bussed around in the relentless heat is heartbreaking.

Everything he says is completely spot on! I've lived here for over 10 years and love it! My husband and I have 4 children with 3 of them born here. All of the negative things he commented on are true, but they are all very easy to abide by and live with. It just takes a bit of time to adjust to. It's fabulous to live here as long as you can learn to keep your mouth shut and keep your opinions to yourself. Also, one major point that I think was missed is that it can be very lonely here. If you are here for a long time, expect a constant turnover of friends. Most people are very transient here, so you're always having to build new relationships and it can get very tiresome. It's one of the main reasons people leave.

Dubai is not just one city -- it's a potpourri of so many different cultures, in which each one seems to find their niche, and is allowed to live their way. Dubai is an incredibly tolerant place -- in fact, the UAE in general is very tolerant. You were spot on with your impressions. I would add, though, depending on your lifestyle & interests, Dubai can drain you financially! I mean I've lived in Dubai and I've seen and faced the reality of how it was really there. As long as you have the money, luxurious villa/house and expensive cars, you'll be treated very well there... but if you're just a middle-class migrant, the treatment and behaviour towards you are entirely different. Hey Carl! Since you said you have a construction background, could please shed some light on what the general work culture in Dubai is like for young, female Engineers/Project Managers in particular? And also legitimate job sites/recruitment agencies and what the procedure is like for those living abroad, would appreciate some more info from someone from the industry. Would be great if you can make an honest video on this topic! Many thanks in advance! xx

Thank you so much for the insights. It seems like most people teaching about Dubai either say it’s a utopia or they say it’s terrible and oppressive. It seems that Dubai is like NYC in the 1920s. But omg the income tax makes me want to live there!
I am really curious about the relationship between the unspoken classes. Like if you are a more privileged Westerner, what is it like to talk with workers from eastern countries?
Keep up the great work on your channel!

I think Dubai is a great country (been there last March) but it is hard for the expats to start a family there because of the cost of living. If you are an engineer, there will be no problem as they are paid well. However, if you are an office staff, it may be tougher for you because you pay rent which is quite high and you also pay someone to take care of your kid/s while you and your wife is at work. Education is I think expensive as well. On the other hand, locals in Dubai are doing well because they are paid higher than the expats. I live in the Philippines.. salary is lower in general here but cost of living is low and you can even save more if you are thrifty. A haircut in the Philippines is around 2-3 dirhams. Most Overseas Filipinos Workers in Dubai have a long distance relationship with their family which is a sad thing. They can't bring their family in Dubai because of the cost of living/education.. so they are separated from their family and send money to the Philippines instead where the cost of living is lower
