- Vocal Coach Ken Tamplin Reacts to Marc Martel's fantastic LIVE In One Take performance of BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY!
Usually when I hear a singer imitate another singer, it sounds cheesy to me and disingenuous.
Karaoke meets bad Las Vegas act or something.
HOWEVER:
In Marc Martel's case, it's amazing.
He sounds just like Freddie (in a great way), has killer tone, pitch, phrasing, range... you name it!
I personally like his version of Queen songs above Adam Lambert.
I am glad they chose Marc to sing the Freddie Mercury parts to the recent Bohemian Rhapsody movie.
Marc did a stellar job.
So I chose to do a vocal coach reacts to Marc Martel!

Another jaat Bhai✌️
Froy Gt these God damn Smurfs.
His singing is fantastic but he also plays the piano while doing this flawlessly. Incredible talent.
Playing an instrument has nothing to do with singing. Some people do have a natural talent for playing instruments, its easy for them. Just like some have a natural talent for learning foreign languages.
suprnatrulcat That’s not what they were talking about. Playing an instrument while singing is hard to do.
@@Samus7000 I've never heard somebody play the "rock out" part on the piano like that. I would think that alone with the vocals would definitely take some work. Whew.
@@suprnatrulcat It's doing two things at once being difficult rather than just focusing on one.
It's easier to juggle than it is to juggle while riding a unicycle. In other words, doing two things is more difficult than doing one thing- that's what Daniel DeSouza is trying to say.
Also, don't believe so heavily in this "natural talent" bullshit. More often than not, people that truly love something will "learn" it faster because they put in the time and effort in that thing. Yes, there are those rare cases where people can instantly play whatever they hear/see, but they are simply wired differently and that's not what we're referencing.
Samus7000 no
Marc Martel should have been invited to Oscars as his voice was used in the movie. Imagine reactions....
Show me where ?
Marino Marino where?
@@charlottemoreau1636 Is Marc Martel credited in Bohemian Rhapsody?
Marc Martel Sings Freddie Mercury In 'Bohemian Rhapsody' ... Martel can't say much else about his work on Bohemian Rhapsody (his manager cited a non-disclosure agreement) but in an interview published in August, the singer said he spent a few weeks recording at London's famous Abbey Road studio before filming even began.
(source IMDB)
Charlotte Moreau he did sang some songs in the movie, like the “doing alright” part, and the happy birthday part, and the part where he’s practicing bohemian rhapsody in piano.
@@BigMeech935 Because Martel was officially credited for what he's done in the movie - additional vocals. Freddie's vocals were used 99.9%. Why is it so hard to give credit to Freddie and Queen and the sound techs who brought Freddie's voice back to life from old multitrack recordings?
I'm glad now can understand everything Ken says.
Marc just released his Killer Queen one-take cover. Check it out if you like, it's fun to watch.
I will, Queeen. Thanks!
i second this!! he did a spectacular job.
Queen Extravaganza Live and I just listened another amazing cover....not cover but Freddie’s reborn, many thanks Marc 🙏🏻
Killer queen 74 live at rainbow is a killer:)!
How do we get RID adam lambert out of Queen...MARC IS WHAT WE WANT! !!!
Marc' s mom has some explaining to do.
Yahh yeeh 😆
Yahh is funny...!
Freddy was gay tho.
Or his dad.
Lolol! IKR?
I have tickets to go see Marc Martel in August 2021. Oh yeahhhhhhh!
Lucky you!
I dont think hes trying to copy Freddie. I don't see him with Freddie-like outfit. Nor haircut like Freddie. Or Freddie iconic mustache. Instead, i see a man with a gift that he's bestowing upon us. Such an amazing gift to have been born with the ability to sing like the legend it self..
Very gifted indeed, Josh Kool!
I've heard he said there are certain things he won't do to copy Freddie because he wants to be respectful of Freddie and his legend/legacy.
hes so talented and you can tell he really adores Freddie
His nose is freddy's
He's trying to get the sound of freddie, not the look. Copying the look would actually be counterproductive. As soon as he walks on stage you would think to yourself "oh here is another fuckhead who thinks dressing like ____ will make him sound like ____."
Dressing as himself is a great way to present and sell himself as a talented musician.
@@shawn576
No, he doesn’t. He has Freddie’s sound naturally. This is Marc’s real honest-to-hid timbre. He doesn’t have to do much to sound like Freddie.
I was at Marc Martel concert in London when he was in Queen Extravaganza, that was fantastic. Quality like you listen to CD, he was moving on stage, playing piano and guitar. He was incredible on stage. Mind blowing
Hi! Thanks for the awesome breakdown. Marc Martel is a beast :)
Actually, when Rami Malek said he sang to all the songs he meant he didn't mime the songs but sang along, not that it was his actual voice in the movie. He wanted it to look as real as possible, so he sang his heart out :) and got pretty hoarse in the process.
His neighbors probably just think he's listening to Queen really loud.
Roger stated when he closed his eyes he hears Freddie at the auditions. Haunting.
Thanks for sharing that info!
Marc is from Quebec Canada my home I have seen him performed 3 times he is the one nobody is even close to reproducing perfection like him
@@sylvainviau454 Nice! Will you see him again next week? He has three shows coming up in Trois-Rivières.
I totally agree with you! Marc does not get enough credit. He is beyond amazing!
He certainly is, Amie Angle!
I saw Marc at an outdoor event in East Tennessee this past summer and he was fabulous. He gave a great performance in spite of the weather!
Hey Ken! Marc is a friend. Not super close but he knows me when he sees me. He had a gag order and wasnt even allowed to say he sang in the movie for quite some time. They apparently didnt want to spoil Ramis Oscar chances. Eventually an article was written in rolling stone about Marc but it was a sidenote that never really caught on. Then Marc did this video around that same time when the gag was lifted and as you see it has millions of views. He told me he didn't care about not being a part of the Oscar party. He was just super thankful to do what he did. Very nice guy.
You should see the fans argue on Queen sites about Lambert and Martel lol. I'm a Martel guy all day.
Thanks for the video dude!
Thank you.
The NDA is still in effect. He gets around it by not disagreeing with interviewers who say his voice was in most or all of thesongs. He just smiles and looks around, innocently. Marc was at Abbey Road Studios for QUITE some time. You have to know his voice was layered with Freddie's almost(?) 100% of the time, to bring the vocals up to standard for Dolby Atmos.
Rami gave Marc credit. He just said he had to physically sing so that all the facial expressions and neck and vocal muscle strains looked believable. He did say Marc sang and Freddie’s voice was also dubbed over too.
Exactly. Rami had to learn how to sing and he was actually singing because it would have looked bad if he just lip synced. He gave Marc credit for actually singing the parts. Rami was only talking about the acting.
Agree with you 100% Marc should be touring with queen, not Adam.
@@Natearl13 He has a tribute band so he is impersonating him. Millions love the collaboration between Adam and Queen - they are very successful. Queen don't want a soundalike as disrespectful to Freddie. Adam is a successful singer in his own right and a great performer on stage. Brian and Roger would not have anyone else.
@Chavez Chavez
Ken did not say that Marc should be touring with Queen. He just said that Marc's sound is closer to Freddie's. Not the same. Adam's voice is amazing, just different from Freddie's. His singing is flawless, and definitely stronger in the high register that is so much needed for the Queen catalogue, plus he has all the other characteristics that is needed to front the band: showmanship and command of the stage, chemistry and friendship with the band members, sense of humour and light and camp personality that fits Queen's style.
OOMackica 1000 Brian and roger have never been relevant. Freddie was that band. If they wanted to be respectful they would’ve followed Deacon.
@MarchOfTheKillerQueen 1970 -Queen have a unique sounds and to get a singer like a Adams will just kill the Queen sounds! Just look at Journey they have to get a singer that sounds like the original singer to keep the original sounds! Adam Lambert, sound like a pop opera singer!
OOMackica 1000 that's not why they have Adam instead of Marc but okay.
Love Marc!
Elton John even made a big statement about who really sang the songs on Freddie mercury queen movie. This guy Marc is awesome
Where did he say that? I'd love to know. :)
I think what you described as flamboyance in his voice are color changes. He’s using his lips and teeth and overall mouth movements to quickly adapt and change color of the lyric, especially on vowels.
Totally agree on the Adam Lambert point Marc would be much better
He's not just have perfect voice, he also did bryan may's solo guitar on piano..
Destha 83 Marc is a gifted musician.
Mark Martel blew me away when I first heard him . He definitely needs to sing with Queen! Freddy still lives through Mark! Best male singer out there!
man this guy is a super legit musician. he's super articulate and seems to really understand the physiology of the human voice. I'm so glad I found him. I know it's a reaction video but there a lots of little great singing tips everywhere in this video.
Wow, thanks!
Truly Ken is an example of breaking the "those who can't do, teach" mold.
I saw Mark Martel in Mexico City doing Symphonic Queen and he was just as killer. It was a special performance for the teachers of the National University and all the old folks became teenagers again for an hour and a half.
love it and love MM. Great covers and Xmas songs too.
Very proffesional reaction!!!! 👍🎵🎶😄🍃🎵🎶
Marc Martel deserved it , he's a wonderful artist!!! A perfect musician, 🎵🎶🎵🍃😃 and oh!!! he sings from the deep of his heart ❤ I agree. 😄 Perfect appreciation!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Beautiful! He’s incredible!
Thank you very much for the honest comments especially at the end! Sorry for my English. I am from Quebec province too 😉. Bravo fabuleux Marc!👌👌👌
Are you seeing Marc this month or next? He's on a 13 show tour with his band the Ultimate Queen Celebration in Quebec at the moment!
After watching your Queen 'Who did it better' I was sad Marc wasn't in the mix, but I get it because he wasn't In Queen just their hand picked tribute band.
I found it interesting in an interview Marc said he didn't really know what he did and thanked his mother and God for facial bone structure!
I'm honored to had the opportunity to see his show last week. It was super emotional and one of the best shows in my life.
Gabriel That is great to hear!
Marc Martel is a gift for all Queen Fans,He is amazing incredible he is very similar to Freddie I think he will be the best choice for Queen Adam Lambert is a good singer, but Marc has the magic and He can keep Freddie's spirit alive, best wishes to you Ken you are my favorit vocal coach on UA-cam, i learned a lot , i am a 60 year old singer from Germany THANK YOU, AND BEST WISHES TO YOU GOD BLESS YOU! LONG LIVE ROCK'N ROLL👍👍👍🍀
And now he sang "Who wants to live forever". Worth a listen, too!!
Thanks, Dennis!
He's got it spot on! Awesome performance!
Mark Martel have one of the greatest vocals out there. He should be even more famous.
Absolutely, Erik!
Marc's cover is phenomenal. Thanks for breaking it down for us and for the awesome demonstration!
Glad it was helpful!
You're spot on Ken. He even looks a lot like Freddy. I first heard him singing on the radio with his band Downhere. I couldn't believe how much he sounded like Freddy on How Many Kings, and started telling all my friends about him. Shocking that he wasn't chosen to your with Queen Extravaganza. Anyway, thanks for spotlighting his amazing talent!
My pleasure, Wayne!
@@kentamplin you rock brother, God bless.
He wasn’t chosen? The entire Queen Extravaganza project was built around Marc and his talent. It fell apart as soon as he left.
Marc *was* chosen to be part of the Queen Extravaganza band. In fact, he is still friends with many of those band members, and continues to perform with them! He has recorded a few "quarantine" videos with Tyler Warren, Brandon Ethridge, and Tristan Avakian recently.
I saw Marc with his band Ultimate Queen Celebration live and recordings and videos do NOT do this guy justice. His show was just over 2 hours with only a small break for him while he changed outfits and while his guitarist played a solo. Then Marc was back on stage, sounding amazing and wowing the audience with his singing and story-telling. None of the other band members spoke. I was all him putting on the show. He owned that audience right from the start. Marc has it all, charisma good looks, stage presence and an amazing voice. People who say he is lacking stage presence obviously have never seen him live. AND he sells out everywhere he performs.
In Germany this month, people who left his concert immediately bought a ticket to next year's show, that's how much people love him.
😊👍💜
I saw him last year as well, and honestly didn't expect much, but WOW! it ended up being wayyy better than the live recordings. If I closed my eyes it felt like I was hearing Freddie
I second that! We've seen Marc 4 times now, & he is, as they say, all that & a bag of chips! What a fantastic talent! Brilliant! Simply brilliant! And his show..... the 2 hours fly by in a blink of an eye! And he just holds his audience in the palm of his musical hand. I understand why people come out and buy another ticket right there & then! I also have to add, we've seen QAL as well. While it was great to see Brian & Roger play live once again (saw them live in 1986), I didn't particularly care for Adam or his performance.
This guy is just mind blowing! It's almost like he's channeling Freddy... Perfect.
Mazie Ferreira He is awesome, for sure!
Wow. I've got a really good ear to notice subtle differences in sounds and voice inflections, but this guy (Marc Martel) sounds as authentically close to Freddy Murcury as I've ever heard, outside of Freddy himself.
Marc does an amazing job, Andrei!
Apparently, this is naturally how Marc sings. I recall him saying that he isn't trying to imitate.
Awesome review Ken. You are the first person Ive heard, out of all the reviews of Marc, to say what Ive thought all along about him. Which is that sometimes Marc does a better job at sounding like Freddie than Freddie did.
OK Late to comment on this one, but I saw Marc live in South Florida in Dec '22. He did the Queen tribute set and was amazing. He's a much different singer to my ear than Freddie was. Live, Marc's smooth voice pierces through in the mix and he has that perfect vibrato. Marc goes all in on the big notes and hits the ones that Freddie was known to duck live. He has a spectacular instrument for sure. Freddy, is so very unique with what I perceive as a fast asymetruc vibrato with a bit more attack than Marc. One last impression: Marc brought in a large group of curious youtube watchers that night and left with legitimate fans of his talent. He's that good.
Marc is just simply amazing 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💕
H I Pursley I would have to agree!
Been following Marc for a long time...even have an original signed Queen Extravaganza poster signed by him and the other band members when they came through Dallas in 2012. I love his early music with his previous band Downhere.... brilliant singer..love him!!
I confirm what Ken says about those shows all being scripted. One of my greatest friends and old bandmates participated in The Voice (of Holland) and he had to sign a myriad of paperwork about not speaking about how it was scripted and also that they would just get into a room and discuss his aspirations and then base on that whether they wanted him to win or not.
On top of that, he sang a few covers in the Voice studios, but every single time that was on the radio he would get absolutely NOTHING out of it. Crazy world.
He's amazing. I've heard him sing live, and I've met him. Such a nice guy.
That's great to hear, S J!
AMAZING!!! Marc Martel even LOOKS like a clean shaven Freddie Mercury from the side.
Marc does an awesome job! 🔥🔥🔥
Great comments and analisys as usual Ken!
Thanks for sharing!👍🏼
Thanks, Joahim!
Which means Marc is the best male singer alive🔥R.I.P Freddie🙏
😊
WOW 😲😲 And he's even sitting-down and still bellowing-out all that power seemingly-effortlessly, unbelievable!!!
I really enjoy how much Ken enjoys all of this. Its kinda nice to see, you know?
I’m seeing Marc Martel in October and I’m so excited he is amazing he really does sound like the greatest showman that was Freddie Mercury
How was it? 😊
Marc Martel is humble guy. He don’t have an ego.
I have seen him live, he's flawless. 😍
Awesome, Mimi!
And a Godly man, too. 🤎
His Christmas album this year is fabulous.
Happy New Year, Ken.
Remember, most of those high notes in the opera section, were NOT Freddie - it was Roger!
Marc Martel I feel is the closest thing to seeing a Queen concert the beats sounded so similar to the original music and his voice is close to sounding like Freddie too he’s literally just missing the London England accent I wish I was born earlier in 20th century so I could seen the original Queen but I am glad there is someone like Marc Martel honoring his legacy I was really impressed by the live concert
I am so glad this vdo was suggested by youtube. Gave me the chills through the entire vdo, watching Marc, Ken and imagining Freddies voice...overwhelmed now. Beautiful.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Goosebumps all over!!!! This bloke is amazing!! I can never get enough of him...
Mark has an amazing voice, and is especially incredible when he sings Freddie, Pablo!
@@kentamplin Thanks for your kind reply, Ken. I'm a big fan of your channel!! Cheers from Patagonia!!

Thank you. Awesome video.
Marc Martel did a great Job on Bohemian Rhapsody; I didn't think he will make it but at the end it was brilliant.
I heard that Queen didn't want mark because he was too much like Freddie and they didn't want to be a tribute band so put mark in the queen experience instead. I may be wrong. I love Mark he has an amazing range and plays his instruments well. I love his cover of killer Queen because he's having fun in his own style rather than showing us how like Freddie he is. He covered I will always love you and that's amazing I also love his love of my life cover too his voice makes me melt and he's a lovely person
Rock on!
I know its 2 years old but great reaction 🤘🤘 subbed
Just so people know, he does go on tour with his group. He’s really awesome. He did singing for the movie and has done tons of stuff for Queen. Go support the guy, super talented
2Far Well said.
I could listen to Marc all day. Heck sometimes I do!!

MemphisMike same.
Yep! That’s me. I’ve never fangirled in my life, and here I am, long past my teenage years, and I’m a silly mess. 😂
I agree Marc is really killin it and
I agree with Coach Ken that Marc is
the one did all the vocals in the movie.
Rock on!👍
I had the opportunity to see Marc when he was the lead singer for the first tour year of Queen Extravaganza 2012. He went through the auditions like everyone else. Roger Taylor actually created that group... Which is a very interesting fact. Eventually Martel left to form his own Queen tribute performance group with orchestras too.
Queen Extravaganza was Queen's official tribute group when it first began.
freddie is like a phoenix died but born again as marc.
I just love how you can see how much you are enjoying this Ken, true legend you are

He's so talented and young. This is just a glimpse of what he's likely to deliver over the course of his lifetime. *okay, he's in his 40's but clearly he 1000% takes care of his instrument*
Agreed Donna McManus!
Thanks for these Queen video's. Marc Is excellent!
Glad you like them!
Marc is phenomenal (but he did start out in gospel… say no more).
I’ve seen him and his band live. Brilliant show.
A last note…I’ve seen Adam performing with Queen, and it was great as he has the flamboyance of Freddie and is an amazing vocalist and artist in his own right, BUT, geez I’d live to see Marc performing with Queen….just imagine. Marc also has facial similarities to Freddie.
The thing is, Marc IS an artist "in his own right" (not well-known, as his band had their own unique niche - not mainstream), a singer-songwriter, unlike Adam (Adam hires top of the line writers/producers like Max Martin to create his music), but he deliberately chooses to honour Freddie's stylistic choices, as he performs as a tribute, not as a "cover band". That is what he does right now, a tribute show, and that is what people buy tickets for. He is fully capable of making the music entirely his own, but he reserves it for his own music and non-Queen, like Christmas classics. Hint: check out his Queen covers album.
Waiting for the day Marc tours more with his own music. I prefer his original music over his Queen stuff.
@@artfulstoriesI couldn't agree more.
Like: Marc

Freddie is a legend, so just think about him❤
Magnus Bentsen 👍
Funny thing is he’s probably more concerned with the piano parts than his actual voice. It’s that damn close to Freddie already! It’s more of an after thought haha
Absolutely love when you say he’s believing what he’s singing. This is what so many musicians aren’t doing today and why we long for the ones that truly gave us their all it’s sad most can only pull off great music in the booth. He has proven his voice capability yet again
Aunt Reese, glad you agree!
Of all the reactions videos to Marc's, i like yours the most. Marc is super fantastic gifted talent, and you are awesome too Ken.. Tq
Glad you like them!
Yep, Marc Martel is a amazing singer, and he sounds exactly like Freddie Mercury. Great reaction video.
He is!
Marc has been known to say hes not imitating Freddie... it's just his voice... he never knew he was basically Freddie until it was pointed out to him...
👍
I noticed this almost twenty years ago when I saw him with his band Downhere. Even a slight physical resemblance.
Marc is Incredible
He sure is, Otter!
That’s what Freddie Mercury was. He was a great composer/lyricist who went from one emotion to the next and to the next. He was very colorful and used all the colors and invented some too. For me Freddie was the best showman for any rock band and of course that incomparable voice. Oh my God that little singing you did, wow. These shows are arranged from the beginning.
Marc Martels voice is just beautiful! His ‘Love of my life’ cover made me cry😭 definitely a young Freddie😊
My understanding of the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, is that it’s a amalgamation of Freddie, Mark and Malek’s voices. But for the uncanny vocals it was Freddie and Marc.
Also wanted to add that this was a great breakdown of Marc’s performance. Had some great insight into what just made Freddie and makes Marc so special. Thanks Ken!
They said somewhere that they used as much Freddie as it was possible and when e.g. the crowd was too disturbing or so they took Marc voice. So there is not really much of Rami Malek's singing in the movie.
Marc Martel ❤️ .... He is Believing in what he Sings !
Marc Martel also has the same structure in his nasal cavity and jaw structure that is twin to Freddie's. It's crazy...his pitch and voice was measured to Freddie's studio recording and it came out almost exactly alike some notes he holds better.
Interesting. Thanks Aubrey.

He could do the main vocals and have some of his students do the backup... That would be awesome!
11:09 I saw an interview where Malik said that he had to sing everything so that it doesn't look fake on the film and then the producers will decide if they put the voice of Freddie, Martel, Malik or a mix of all of them. So that's why he said he had to sing everything. In the beginning the producers did not mention Marc Martel, but Malik revealed Marc's name in one of his first interviews saying "there was also a singer with an incredible voice called Marc Martel who helped us with the voice of Freddie". I think he was misunderstood on the radio.
C. Woo
The best person who described who was involved in singing was the exec producer of the biopic Graham King. He clearly stated that there is very little of Rami (4 bars to be exact) a lot of Freddie and a lot of Marc.
That is also what i heard
Yeah honestly, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who'd claim something like that in bad faith. Almost certainly misspoke or was misunderstood.
