Chris, hope you read this mate. Been fishing since I was a kid, on and off for years, only ever known very basic tactics, float, method feeder etc. After watching your videos, this week I went to my local canal and tried a jighead for the first time in my life. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much, but straight away got followed by a big pike. Also managed to land 3 decent sized perch. I have to say this method of fishing is far more exciting than sitting wating for a carp to bite. Thank you for the inspiration mate, genuinely. Fist time I've ever caught a fish using any kind of lure, and now im hooked.
You know what I like about your channel. You’re not throwing expensive products down our throats. You literally use budget tackle in a lot of your videos and produce the goods in every video. Helps out starter anglers wanting to get into fishing. Thanks great video 👍🏻
Been fishing for decades but only lure fishing for a few months - saw this video and took a punt as the lake by my house has been left unmanaged 20yrs, silted up and weed choked but those who know still winkle out big tench, bream and lots of pike. Last evening fishing 18” of gin clear water and chilling in the sunset I actually got multiple follows and a stonking hit. What a buzz - thanks for the great videos
@@Johnnyalexwales It’s not all secret. He is in Yorkshire. The reason you and I don’t get to know his exact location is to prevent overfishing and exploitation. A lot of the waters he is fishing are paid for club waters. You know and I know of our favourite spots why would you want them to be overfished. Don’t think for a minute Chris catches fish every 5 minutes, a lot of work goes into making these videos….tight lines.
Love your vids. One of the coolest UA-cam creators. And without advertising everything, u take care more about the fish than about showing it to the camera, beautiful 👍 And Nice fish too, keep doing that great work 🙂🤝
I so enjoy your videos, reminds me of great times out alongside the water. Sadly no longer able to fish due to poor health. I wish you continued success.
*Great item. First cast out of the package caught a nice bass. Pulls smooth in the water and sets up nicely immediately upon retrieval. Worth adding to your tackle box.*
5 questions as a new pike angler.😂 1. Are you using braid ? 2. Are you using a wire trace? 3.what lb line or braid? 4. Would it work on canals? 5.what time year is this method best? Thanks keep it up and tight lines😅
An East Coast US lure and technique request. If it would not be too much, we use what we call "pencil poppers," tapered surface plugs, wide at the back thin at the front, and literally whip the rod tip up and down to maximize side to side action per retrieved line. I think pike on a big enough body of water would destroy one. Cotton Cordell Pencil Popper is a classic, the old ones were better. The newer Japanese designs tend to a fatter head, and not as elegant. The wood Gibbs classics are expensive but worth it. I knew a Russian who did some nice customs, a new NE US cottage industry. Fun to see out of place lures and techniques and if they work.
Ah, this brings back happy memories - thank you! I love top fishing for Pike during the summer months. Unfortunately most clubs in my area (Sussex) only allow river Pike fishing in the winter.
Hi, saw this and went down to the Royal canal, its so weedy, this is the only way you could fish it. Had a couple of jacks and missed a couple more, but it was super great fun, the takes are unreal, thanks for the inspiration, I'd have sat on me arse and watched the football otherwise!
Hey Chris, that second one was a desent pike mate 👍 i bought some surface frogs and ducklings on Ali Express and they works, lures doesn't have to expensive, great video 👍🥇
when frogging for pike, i tend to do a double hookset, in really rapid succesion. first a light, and then a hard. first one exposes the hook, second sets it. nice video as always mate :)
As a teenager I didn't have the money for the top lures. But you could get Mackerel spinners in my local tackle shop for 25p each, I reasoned that they would flash red and silver like Roach so tried them on my local River Frays and Grand Union Canal. Had a lot of small Pike up to 7lb on them, still carry a couple in my kit 40 years later
Caught loads of pike on the exact same frog. I added a stinger tho due to poor hook up rate. Was like 1 in 4 lol with a stinger I miss about 1 in 10. Awesome top water bait.
@@TheRenso87 - on jig flies I use a crimp to attach wire trace to the bend in the big fly hook. Then place the stinger about 3/4 back along the fly and crimp it in place. Pretty quick to do. Not sure about these double hook frogs, Savage Gear sell a ready made stinger with their frogs.
I would love to go to join you for canal fishing but I am to far away. I live in Michigan USA and we do have a few pike here.Love your videos keep up the good times .
I tend to modify the hooks on these frog lures, turn them up slightly and get a much better hook up rate, before was getting a lot of bites but not landing much.
You are lucky.... awesome 👍👍👍 I was already few sessions to try to fishing but wasn't lucky to catch anything... just multiple times pike striked but I don't imagine how never was able to strike into hooks 😂
The best lures I used, was some £1 spinners from Poundland around 13 years ago, when I first started fishing for pike and perch around kings Lynn, even caught a chub from a part of the river no wider then 3 ft behind some bungalows which no one ever fished before, only chub to have ever come out of the river lol
love seeing anything toothy hit a surface lure and some good fish taken. would love to see you do it again with maybe a few more close up takes. (and maybe some top of the range surface lures) love your content nether the less, especially when you show (some) Americans what fish aftercare is. . .😉
Great video as usual, what was your set up apart from the frog? Like rod, reel, landing net etc. Is this type of fishing only for summer or will it work in Autum as well?
I've found when you get a take on surface, to count to two or three then strike usually get them in scissors once they've turned. Strike quick and can pull out of mouth, however it takes some patience not to strike lol. Nice video 👍
Hey how's it going??..GREAT vids you can really learn loads 👍 I've been using a Shakespeare sigma flick open net and it fell apart after two seasons 🙄 what net are you using in this video buddy??
Awesome. I have the same frog and way more expensive frogs, ducks, frucks etc. Nothing beats the moment it gets hit and I always jump. Fish them from the bank an kayak on small rivers and norfolk broads. Great for chucking into the bank then hopping onto lilies then through the weed. Will try the offset trick as I miss probably 8 in 10 hits. Hooks are a bit brutal too and stingers not an option in the weed/lilies. Keep posting :-)
Topwaters is awesome! I just tried fly fishing for the first time this week. It's like topwater adrenaline with peaceful relaxation between hits. Cheers!
I used these yesterday funny enough, the purple one, had lots of takes, but I struggled to actually land one it kept unhooking, would you say I'm. Just not being aggressive enough to sink the hook?
Your probably striking too early mate. I know it goes against all instinct but you need to wait till you feel the weight of the fish before you strike, its difficult. an alternative is to attach a 3 way swivel on the hooks and squeeze it down slightly with a pair of pliers then clip a worm hook on so you have a stinger. That will help with hookups if it's not really heavy weed your fishing through.
Hey Chris I love you vids. I use to be a keen angler many yrs ago and I want to get back out there. But my gear is about 20 yes out of date . Could you recommend an all round set up so I can get back out there and try to get some fish on the bank. Cheers mate 👍🏻
They do work well, but the trouble is that they tear so easily when taken - and then they sink. I' ve tried repairing them with superglue, but it doesn't really work.
I always got terrible hookup rates with pike on hollow frogs. A Heddon Moss Boss is just as weedless, works on the surface, can be allowed to sink and be twitched sub-surface and will double your hookup ratio.
If you take the frog and bend the hooks a little out on both sides, you will hook them more. The hooks are bent a little more in then need to be. And i know they do that to keep it weedless.
