The Worst Northern Lights Claim I've Ever Heard, and Why a "Book of Shadows" Makes My Teeth Itch.

  • We had a huge display of the Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis across the UK last week, and lots of people got out to witness their majestic splendour. Obviously this meant some people got very odd ideas indeed.
    Also, in a move that is likely to REALLY UPSET some people, I have a bit of a rant about why I think the term, "Book Shadows" is pretentious tripe.

    You are so funny, lol! I’m in my early fifties, and I know EXACTLY what you mean about the 👓 😂! I’m not on TickTock so I hadn’t heard about the ancestor aurora thing. That’s hilarious. Of course, I’m sure our ancestors did hold it as a message or omen. I’ve seen it a few times growing up, and was always awed by it. I live in Texas, USA now so it’s too far south to see it. I almost choked on my drink when you made some comment about “frustrated scrap bookers”😂. I’m a novice witch, only since 2020. I found witchcraft on UA-cam during the pandemic and realized I’ve always been a witch. Of course, Wicca-esque information was what I came across first, all these young influencers. I’ve never been really good with keeping a books of shadows, but I regularly keep a “Book of Mirrors” for tarot readings and other divination reflections. I also keep private thoughts about my spiritual development and interactions with various deities and spirits. I do love crafting and art and am developing as an art witch so I do love decorating with stickers, coloring book images, envelopes, etc… but it’s more like for either helping me remember new information or as part of a spell with my intention being imbued as I create with materials I’ve charged. I do like watching those videos because sometimes they inspire me for spells or study pages. You’ve been practicing since before it “was cool”. I do feel that some witchy content is more about the aesthetic rather than actual spell craft. It must be frustrating at times for you to see skills you’ve worked in and built when it was a less socially acceptable way of life be paraded as arts projects rather than the serious magical arts they are. Thanks for the tips on drying flowers and herbs. Your hand fasting sounds absolutely wonderful! Idk if you’ve ever considered a video covering the basics, but I’d love to see that. My nephew and his husband had a hand fasting a couple of years ago on Halloween. It was awesome (although most family members are uncomfortable with the LGBT community and witchcraft here in the south. Btw, if you feel like sharing that homemade cheddar broccoli bake recipe- I love to cook, and that sounds awesome. Blessed be. ❤

      Welcome to Grumpy Old Crone! It's lovely to have you along for the ride. Sorry I've been out of the loop for a while - I went to a festival and ended up with covid :-(
      I think you are spot on with the aesthetic thing. Real witchcraft doesn't care how it looks.
      I will absolutely do a video on handfasting - there seems to be a dearth of information out there.
      Right, back on to planning the next video!

    My "book of shadows" is my first draft notes for magical study kind of thing. I'll jot thoughts too and have a section for sabbat associations. It's prep space for possible grimoire pages.
    I like the way some have described it: a BoS is basically a witch's journal. And a grimoire is collated information for reference or passing down.

      That's actually a very nice distinction. I like it!

      As another commenter mentioned, my Book of Shadows is my first draft of various things that I am learning on my magical path. It’s messy and private. It’s my journal of all the experiences.
      I am the n the process of creating a grimoire that is general knowledge that any witch or non witch can see and by doing so may inspire the witch folk or correct any misunderstandings that the non witch people may have

    My god! Thank you! You just solved a mystery! I’ve been up all night wondering why i haven’t seen the Aurora when everyone else has. But after watching your video and consulting my scrapbook of shadows i now know that it is because even great aunt Gladys has disowned me, so she didn’t bother communicating via the aurora borealis 😂😂

      So, lemme see if I got this: our ancestors are unable to communicate with us in some simple, direct way but are capable of causing a grand scale natural phenomenon to do so? m'kay 😂

    Frustrated scrapbookers is spot on! "Book of Shadows" is a term that originated in traditional Wicca, coined by Gardner. Like other Wiccan elements, it's been borrowed and the purpose lost on those who get their knowledge (cough) from blogs & social media. Traditionally, the BOS contains what's passed on from initiate to initiate while personal grimoires/spellbooks and journals are perpetual works progress specific to that individual.
    One thing is true of any practical BOS: it ain't pretty. It's a working document filled with stains, splotched ink, tears etc., much like grandma's recipes book... And good luck to you if your initiator has atrocious penmanship (one acquires their trad's BOS by copying their initiator's copy). 😵‍💫☺️

      EXACTLY THIS!!!! I'm not Wiccan, so feel no need to do anything complicated beyond a notebook of "what I did and what worked", because my memory is not what it was....

    I've got attractive white streaking- does that mean I'm an aurora?

  • @Sabatuar
    @Sabatuar 2 місяці тому +4

    It was overcast by me when the electrical storm aurora happened, but we get them every winter, so it wasn't too much of a loss. The ancestors thing sounds like appropriation of Canadian and Alaskan native folklore. Possibly also the related Siberian cultures, but I'm less familiar with those.

    • @GrumpyOldCrone
      @GrumpyOldCrone  2 місяці тому

      That's really interesting! As far as I am aware the claim of ancestors in the Northern Lights was uttered by very white, very English people, so whilst it is not rubbish, it is certainly appropriation unless there is a long lost Ainu diaspora in Wolverhampton.... Thanks for the info!

    It's only starting to penetrate my awareness - this Aurora Borealis UK event. So, I missed it. But a science UA-cam channel was talking about a recent 'Carrington Event', and I know that has something to do with solar storms, so I wonder if the two are the same thing.
    Besides that - the silver lining, to having a not quite state of the art camera, is that you have no excuse to not experience the thing first hand! Isn't that kind of liberating? You can always look at somebody else's photographs. Not everything has to have posterity. Some things are experiences just for you and they come and go so fast that you can't tell anybody about them, and be believed, and can't capture them as they are so fleeting. So the only thing left is to enjoy them and then let them go. When did we stop being able to enjoy things as they are happening?

    • @GrumpyOldCrone
      @GrumpyOldCrone  2 місяці тому

      That was definitely what I was telling myself, to be honest. I was slightly grumpy that I'd thought I would get to see the Lights with my eyes, not my crappy phone though! But being in the middle of nowhere, with a really weird sky and silence everywhere was pretty special. Props to my friends who managed to sleep through it all, though...
