Don't Waste Your Pagan Pounds on This Rubbish!
I'm back after a whole lot of being ill and going on holiday and being ill again, and then going to a festival and finally getting bloody Covid for the umpteenth time.
And this time I am looking at another one of the ways in which arseholes with no actual knowledge or qualifications in witchcraft are trying to make money off the back of people just trying to start their witchcraft journey.
Great UA-camrs who offer excellent learning resources:
@HearthWitch
@TheOakWitch
Authors to look out for:
Rae Beth
Starhawk
Doreen Valiente
Glennie Kindred
Try and find these authors at independent bookstores - I recommend courtyardbooksglastonbury.co.uk/ who will also offer recommendations on good books to start or continue researching your path.

Magical Colouring In Books: the Ultimate Insult to Witchcraft.... (Also: I am having a very bad day)
Переглядів 609Місяць тому
I kind of lose it today. And why? Magical Colouring In Books. And I don't mean those pretty books with complicated pictures of fish and mermaids. I mean books marketed as being educational to adults, that you have to colour in. Yes, they exist. And yes, I looked at them. And yes, I got ridiculously angry. #witchcraft #witchy #rant #crone Also: my very bad day. And why people who identify as men...

"What Kind of Witch Am I?" Why You Don't Need Labels for Successful Witchcraft.

We had a huge display of the Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis across the UK last week, and lots of people got out to witness their majestic splendour. Also, in a move that is likely to REALLY UPSET some people, I have a bit of a rant about why I think the term, "Book Shadows" is pretentious tripe.

    Can't stop laughing about the cinnamon 😂 lets just pretend for a couple of mins that this could work for some, cinnamon, tick, blowing it in your door to bring things in, tick. Maybe, with the right intention. I work on the rule you do you, boo. However, I put that wirchcraft documentary on a few months ago and the in the opening credits she was blowing cinnamon out of the door. I rolled my eyes and turned it off 😂

    Who decided witches need to fit into a pidgeon hole? In any one day, im a green witch, im a kitchen witch, im an earth witch, a moon witch, a planetary witch and the list goes onnn. 100% agree with this we do not need labels, we just need to make our practice our own. If you try and fit in a box you are limiting your magic so very much, so lets not do this, a witch is a witch nuff said 🥰

    From one grumpy old crone to another--this one Stateside. I tuned in and thought this was a great and timely presentation. I also had just been reading a chapter on the phenomenon of pop-culture witchcraft from a highly recommended book A History of Witchcraft - Sorcerers, Heretics & Pagans by Russell and Alexander. The morning read and your video went well together for the thought for the day. The acceptance of witchcraft in popular culture has become a double-edged sword. On the one hand, folk magic and Neopagan and Woman Spirituality are out of shadows--on the other, all this under the aegis of "witchcraft" redefined has become fodder for pop culture and fad identity-culture (style rather than substance). Just as the 60s counterculture scene became commercialized, so too is the Craft scene. The New Age manifestation magic and Baby Witch scenes --and the ongoing conflating of witchcraft and Wicca--has sabotaged and mercilessly dummied down the movement IMO. I think more advanced, mature--and scholarly-minded-practitioners should just continue to be a voice and see how things continue to evolve.

    I layed for 10 hrs for my shitty chestpeice and also had to get some of it covered later. It’s the worst. I’ve given birth twice. But nothing will prepare you for the upper chest. Sorry to tell you but be prepared for that nerve pain going up your neck. It’s like being sawed on with a hand held saw. But that was me. It can be different pain for different people. The second worst are fingers. And the fingers you need to do more than once because of the technically. Thank you for sharing your story and the history and your point of view Annie. I really want to get my chest covered with a big black bird. The money and the bravery is not there tho. What is your view on covering tattoos? I think it’s important if there is some kind of in your way of things. I don’t have the worst tattoos but the two that I did myself are still my favorites. I don’t have many cus it’s very expensive. And for many years I just hated tattoos tbh. Someday. Someday I will do something about it but there are so many other things to spend money on. Like rent 😅

    Absolutely here for witchy karen lol. I am also traditional, but was raised with folk practices from the ozarks and appalachia. I'm working on getting back to my family's roots, which can be tedious. I'm just happy to see someone keeping the gate for those who don't pay attention to what technology is doing to us. Like, I hate that people take advantage of the newbies. They didn't do that as much back in our day because everyone was too afraid to do so. At least that was the case in my community. People would hesitate to teach, now people are too excited to hop on being an ""expert"" and just throwing this shit out. Rubbish indeed. --Vyvyan

It’s definitely on my ‘to visit’ list. Anyway keep being a Karen and gatekeeping! I got told I was gatekeeping horror because I said Shirley Jackson’s ‘The haunting of hill house’ was more of a ghost story 🤔 in a horror book group. Seems gatekeeping is the in word at the moment 😂 however I quite like the idea of being a gatekeeper (not gamekeeper though) 😊

      It's another of those phrases like "narcissist" that get thrown around willy nilly, isn't it? As I've said elsewhere, the old definition of a gatekeeper was not only someone who kept people out, but also someone who welcomed visitors in, and directed them on their way. That's the kind of gatekeeper I think I'd like to be...

    My husband and I used to do historical reenactments of the fur trade era and was on our way to a festival. He was dressed up in beaded buckskins, moccasins, I even think he had a knife on his belt, and went into a local store on the way. I followed at a discrete distance to watch people's reactions to him and was very disappointed no one seemed to notice anything peculiar.

Or they think they are anyway 😂 having a rant on YTube does not make you a karen and lets face it, people can always scroll if they don't like you! Sorry to hear you had your fun cut short with the A and E visit 😢😢 but lolll at the makeup, love it 😂😂 and oooohhh I won't be spending my very limited and precious lucre on this book but I would bloody love to read it one day when I need a chuckle 😂😂😂 and no, you aren't gatekeeping by protecting newbie witches from wasting their money on poor quality books thatarentevenabook lol. I wish there was one book that did it all but nope. If you want to practice then not even 100 books will tell you it all. Not even 1000. The gods and deities is the one that gets me... No one can agree on the number of Gods and Goddesses in Norse and Anglo-Saxon culture, how many of them are separate entities, or how many are the same deity under a different name, the deities of Ancient Egypt that are referred to often by pagans and scholars only scratch the surface, so 14 pages won't cover that. These printables seem to be a quick money making exercise for digital sellers.

    • @GrumpyOldCrone
      @GrumpyOldCrone 8 днів тому

      I think there are some different ways and levels of what we term "gatekeeping". I'm totally against people who stop others from joining in a hobby because they don't fit the gatekeeper's sense of ... something. As a long-time female roleplayer, I have seen this a LOT. There's a certain kind of person who doesn't want women playing *their* game. I usually delight in taking these knobends down a peg or two. I've been playing since I was 16, and met every single partner I've ever had through roleplaying, usually whilst running the game myself. But the medieval role of a gatekeeper was not just to keep people out, but to welcome them in, and direct them on their onward journey. And *that's* the kind of gatekeeper I want to be.

    On the subject of Ron Hutton's ubiquity, I think that guy must have mastered the occult art of bilocation or something. He lives near me in Bristol and I am constantly seeing him all over the place. In fact it seems to freak him out a bit. About a year ago, I went to Chorleywood in Hertfordshire to visit my parents. It turned out that he was actually giving a talk at the local memorial hall in the village at the same time!

    Wearing that scary make up probably explains why you were seen so promptly in A&E. They prioritise cases in accordance with perceived urgency via the triage system. They probably saw your face and thought you must be dying or something. I once had to wait all night to be seen for a broken arm. So, maybe the best thing is to actually take the make up with you rather than take it off beforehand.

      Yep. I have a kindle and I've signed up for a couple of sites that let you know about free and low cost books. It's been useful, but I tend to only look for authors I know because I came across a bloke who had written 10+ books over the last couple of years and I suspect he uses AI to write them. On Instagram I had an ad recommended to me a set of witchcraft books (something like 8 or 10 in all), for a cheap price - I tried looking for the books on amazon to see if the books were legit, couldn't find them, so either the books don't exist, the books are AI generated or it's plagiarized content if it is. Plagiarism is something you have to be on the look out for, especially with self-publishing. I don't have anything against Lulu, though because the Troth uses it to publish their books and newsletters so it's a useful company if it's used properly. I couldn't find anything on the witchcraft book author and the kindle guy doesn't even have a page on Fantastic Fiction. AI generated content is the worst not just because it steals stuff, but it also takes away people's critical thinking and research skills.

    The fist time I came across the term 'witchy' was by Charles Manson, which was taken from a courtroom statement from 1969. He said he told his followers to leave behind them some sort of 'witchy' mark after a crime. Hence the whole Beatles quotes left on the walls and stuff.

      i didn't used to, but one of my favourite authors - Sharon Blackie - released a set she'd co-authored, so I bought them. It's a very different way of approaching things, but I kind of love them. I also just bought "The Sherwood Oracle" by Mark Ryan/John Matthews/Anne Yvonne Gilbert because I'm a huge fan of the Kip Carpenter's "Robin of Sherwood" tv series that Mark Ryan acted in. I'm still reading the LWB, but it's amazing so far! I've heard really good things about the Robin Wood deck. The readers I know who are lucky enough to own it, don't seem to want to use anything else. it's a really amazing deck by all accounts....

    I don't really have a problem with these colouring books. They are fun... Will you learn anything from them? Probably not, but there is magic in colour - you have the charkas and they have their own colours. Crystal magic is heavily colour based. Candle magic is based on colour. There are witches who practice art magic and colour is important to that. The elements each have their own colour that is associated with them. All of the runes have colours associated with them. Creating art and doing craft projects means that you can make things for your altar without having to buy expensive statues. What's created might not be considered fine art, but it's a start. People can bind their own books for their BOS/Grimoires and these have more meaning to them than a store bought notebook. Without 'art' the achievements of the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians would have been lost to time. It's just another way of practicing.

      Exactly. It's wanting to hedge your bets, I think. I'm personally all for nailing my colours to the tree. Only not with a nail, because I'm a Gaian.

    Who is the artist mentioned at 12:36? All I'm hearing is Sarah Marsetti, but this must be wrong, because I can't find anything about them online. I would like to check out their work and support them.
