Remember that this ran at native 720p on the OG Xbox One. Even the fastest GPUs will struggle to run this game at 4K. Expecting this to run at native 4K on X1X is ridiculous.
If you're ignoring the reconstruction tech, it was more like 720p with 4xMSAA. Rares Macovei The game never used checkerboard rendering. Also, you can't "checkerboard from 720p to 1080p".
The most distracting visual artifact from this game is the visual smearing, probably from the temporal reconstruction and not motion blur. You can't turn it off even on pc when you're running native res. It fits when you're using using your time powers and the stutters but looks very odd during normal gameplay almost like your screen has awful ghosting.
Playing through this game now and it’s gorgeous. I did notice the flickering in shadows but I remember it being the same way on OG Xbox. As soon as you get into a gunfight and see those stunning time effects, you forget all about some flickering shadows.
I bought and played this game earlier this month (November 14th to be exact) got it for $20 digitally, and played it on my Xbox One X and I was blown away at the game. Yes I did notice the visual bugs, but they really did not detract from the game itself. I still found it to be a solid experience the whole way through. The framerate was solid and the resolution makes the game sharper and look great on a 4K TV. The fact I unlocked all the achievements in 4 days should be a testament of how much I enjoyed this game regardless of the minor graphical bugs that are present. If interested, don't hold out for a fix. The game is cheap enough to where those should not be an issue unless you specifically look for them. I'm glad Digital Foundry mentioned them, and I hope they get addressed and fixed, but even with them, the game is an amazing experience and definitely one of the best games I've played (story and concept wise) in quite sometime!

I played this on the X. The cut scenes were frame skipping like crazy. It did look nice in motion, but the cut scenes were completely nerfed. It kills the flow of the story.
it's a shame that this game doesn't have 60 fps on XSX, in its current state it's not fun to play at all, sometimes frame rate drops drastically, especially in the combat scenes. I really don't understand why Microsoft hasn't fixed it yet.

How is it possible that this game looks better (on PC) than most new productions (2024)? Amazing volumetric light, physics of many, many objects. Lots of details! Very underrated game.
It's not our fault you are to stupid to understand why it's done. But here let me explain it. It basically is showing the effect of what it's like having a LARGE screen 4k tv. The bigger the screen the easier it is to see all that tiny detail , detail most of you idiots can't see cause you're using a phone to watch shit like tools. Believe me on a 65 inch or larger screen those tiny zoomed in parts are large and plain as day on huge screen size.
Has anyone stopped to consider that the game isn't native 4k because it came out over two years ago? It's a lot of work (that makes them no money) for these developers to go back to a game and upgrade the visuals for these new consoles. When Fallout 3 got its patch for Xbox One X, I didn't get angry because the textures looked like they were made in 2008 - because they were.
MS Xbox division really shouldn't have done this whole "uncompromised 4k" tag line. At least Sony made it clear it would use checkerboarding, etc to do dynamic 4k from the start. Exceptions for the X are just way too high.

That's not what I am saying. As a MS fan, I feel lied to. Forza 5 ran at 1080p on standard Xbox One but most of the games ran at 900p. Now Forza 7 runs at native 4k but most games don't. Both were marketed as 1080p/True 4k machines. Wipeout collection runs at native 4k 60fps on Pro so does that make it a true 4k machine?

Sorry to have to break this to you guys and gals, but the lies began from the moment the console was officially revealed. As a PC owner, and anyone that knows about specs, 6 TFLOPS doesn't get you anywhere near uncompromised 4K, not even close, you need over double that power. To put it into perspective, I had an R9 390 (which you can call an rx 580 today) and that was a 5.25 TFLOP card. I could push it to near 6 TFLOPS with an overclock. The card killed 1080p, well over 100 frames on most games, and then got somewhere between 60-75 frames in 1440p. 4K tanked below 20 frames and some games wouldn't even load. I have an RX Vega 64 now which I have running at 13 TLOPS and not even it can deliver "uncompromised" 4K, although I can hit 60 frames on alot of games. The card inside the XBox One X is likely a custom RX 580 or equivalent. The XBox One X specs are basically 1440p, and at best 1800p with upscaling. No way can it do native 4K 60 fps unless the games are restricted to on rail rendered games or Indies. 4K 30 fps can be done with upscaling only and severe compromises to image quality settings, custom resolutions below 2160p are what you can likely expect otherwise. I wonder if there's even regulation on this stuff, but the only way you're going to get uncompromised 4K, is to build a PC. Sorry guys, but internet is the best thing to happen to the consumer, you should go away and do your research, never get sucked in by marketing alone.
Whats crazy is every video that comes out Sony peeps talk smack about the x not being at native 4k 60. What yall are forgetting is that the x can handle 4k 60. Its up to the developer to do so. The windows store version is a dumpster fire, but this X version isn't looking any better. It looks to be running medium across the board here, with worse reflections than the original One version. No idea how that happened. From the video alone you can see it's using the lowest shadow preset, lowest volumetric light preset and there's no way its running effects or global illumination at high, those are extremely taxing, they would go with other higher settings before those I think The only setting that's probably high is textures, which should be ultra, and maybe geometry. I can run the game at 1440p no upscaling at damn near 60fps with those settings, and I have the Windows store version unfortunately.
Played this on a 60 inch screen at 720p on a new noobly built gtx 1060. I thought the game was locked to 720p as I couldnt change it at first, but when I finally did get it changed to 1080p 30 mins into the game all I could say was wow what a difference. No shit right. But it was the first time I actually saw in somewhat realtime the difference between 720p and 1080p on the same game.
There should be defined minimums. Not "desireable", which would be higher, but minimums no developper is allowed to go lower to pass quality control in each platform.: Switch portable: 540p 30 with lowest graphics settings (0%) for multi platform games. Switch console: 720p 30 with low graphics setting (25%) Xbox One: 900p 30 with medium graphics (50%) Ps4: 1080p 30 with slightly better visuals than X1 Ps4 Pro: Ckecherboard 4K 30fps or native 1080p 60fps (depending on cpu load), with high settings (75%) X1X: Native 1800p 30fps with highest settings (100%) or native 1080p with highest settings plus high levels of multi sample anti aliasing and SMAA.
It's remedy the liers. They said that Quantum Break was gonna ran at 1080p on the vanilla Xbox One, but the reality is a 720p with MSAA 4x with temporal reconstruction increase to 1080p. A 900p or @ 1080p with TAA would look better and perform better and a 1800p or even native 4k with TAA would look better and perform better

Have this game on PC after picking it up cheap. Too bad it is not as good as they hyped it up to be. It looks good graphically thats about it. As for being demanding on PC, my rig pushes it just fine.
It's so obvious that Microsoft is quietly killing off the Xbox One. No release dates for 2018, or any new gameplay of Crackdown 3 Ori 2, State of decay 2. Besides the Xbox One X, Microsoft has NOTHING new coming anytime soon!
Why did they remove the 1080p option. I'd much prefer the hardcoded option to set the game to 1080p on the Xbox One X over assuming it's not using dynamic resolution scaling... that practise of removing features to make the player experience more enjoyable is just plain wrong. I hate seeing developers do that sort of stuff, it's good to see consoles supporting 4K but the option to run at 1080p native for more FPS over sub par 4K outweighs the idea of a 4K experience for me.
I would imagine they simply couldn't get it to hold a solid enough framerate at 1080p. If the end result of 1080p was still a 30fps lock for smoothness, then the 1440p mode would still suit 1080p gaming, while also giving a better looking image than 1080p
They have to release a new patch to fix these flickering artifacts and there should stil be the option for native 1080p "pumped up"The effects on this game are amazing and pretty much still unmatched
I think the setting is closer to high setting on xbox one. But GTX 1070 can play it easily 1440p max with over 30fps (steam version, not the broken windows store version). GTX 1070 > Xbox one X in this game But it still a demanding game. Native 4K 60fps (with no drops) on max setting is not possible with single GPU
because your cpu might much better. the only 4k is the GPU in that X system. The cpu is just horrible and it's clocked at 2,3ghz. That is low for system today. They went AMD and cheapeast possible CPU for their "new" hardware. Just because it has many cores doesn't mean it can deliver. The speed is NOT up to the most tasks with fps dips. This is the result. Can't support this system. At least in the past when they asked 500 euro for their new hardware they delivered hardware wise much better
Honestly, consoles should've focused on visual fidelity more than resolution. Those 6Tflops of GPU power could've kickstarted a new generation (with a change in CPU)
Do you read anything?? Or have you tried the Xbox one x??? There was 65 4k native titles on it's launch. And even games that use the dynamic resolution 99% of the time there keep a solid 4k resolution native! Then there's all the 4k assist the Xbox one x has do some research or at least play on one you will change your mind very fast.

Now I'm not brand loyal and I am somewhat wealthy so I own all of the consoles including the pro. But it is definitely not worth an upgrade if you already own a PS4
Rosencrantz I don't have a single game that plays 4k on my pro. Not only that but my ex downloads higher texture packs close to a PC. Plus it has a UHD Blu-ray player. Which my family and I use a lot. I have a 75" QLED, so I like to have equipment that will take advantage of the purchase of such a high quality TV. And no, I did not have an original PS4 so buying the pro was a no-brainer. But with all the games I have played on The X I have to say, it's a much better experience. It's still early in the pro and X's life cycle but I can't help but notice how close games like Wolfenstein 2 and Assassin's Creed origin look to my buddies PC version. And he has a $1,800 PC build
Rosencrantz also the games that I play on my Pro are mostly single player exclusives. So I don't even bother purchasing those I just go to Redbox and spend about $9 to beat the game and then I return it. So while they do have more exclusive games currently they just aren't worth a retail purchase in my opinion. But just look at the news media Outlets. Almost every one of them say that the extra hundred dollars is well Justified. I hate brand loyalty so I will always own all of the consoles. Because I really hate my options be limited. So you won't see me thrashing other people's choices when it comes to their Hobbies. But Microsoft is clearly on a good path with the services and Hardware now in place. It just needs a little bit more first-party software
Back to the drawing board for a better patch. Maybe, they should just refer to this as the "place holder patch". I'd think MS would want to showcase this game in the best way possible. They might have trusted one or two people as DF suggested for this patch. But, more resources are needed. I think an unlocked fps mode would be neat at 720p, or variable res that targets 900p at least. Just clean up the glitches. The downsampling on 1080p displays looks nice at least.
Really hope they fix these glitches by the time I get my X. Quantum Break is the game I'm most excited to play on the X, and I don't want the experience to be tainted. I honestly would've took the minor frame drops over those intense visual glitches. And the fact that they scaled some textures back down to 720p is incredibly disappointing. But it doesn't look like it takes away from the experience.
The Remedy developers are wizards, but they followed the wrong approach. All that realtime global illumination means little when the game can only be played at low res and everything looks like a blurry mess. I remember a similar situation with Rage, when Carmack engineered a magic engine where the entire map could be hand painted without a repeated texture everywhere. An amazing achievement, but at the end of the day storage and practical limits forced everything to look like low res garbage.

That's not what I am saying. As a MS fan, I feel lied to. Forza 5 ran at 1080p on standard Xbox One but most of the games ran at 900p. Now Forza 7 runs at native 4k but most games don't. Both were marketed as 1080p/True 4k machines. Wipeout collection runs at native 4k 60fps on Pro so does that make it a true 4k machine?
99% of X enhancements just offer resolution increases which you won't even notice in gameplay over a PS4 Pro unless you actually look. So what's the point in the X?

Sorry to have to break this to you guys and gals, but the lies began from the moment the console was officially revealed.
As a PC owner, and anyone that knows about specs, 6 TFLOPS doesn't get you anywhere near uncompromised 4K, not even close, you need over double that power.
To put it into perspective, I had an R9 390 (which you can call an rx 580 today) and that was a 5.25 TFLOP card. I could push it to near 6 TFLOPS with an overclock. The card killed 1080p, well over 100 frames on most games, and then got somewhere between 60-75 frames in 1440p. 4K tanked below 20 frames and some games wouldn't even load.
I have an RX Vega 64 now which I have running at 13 TLOPS and not even it can deliver "uncompromised" 4K, although I can hit 60 frames on alot of games.
The card inside the XBox One X is likely a custom RX 580 or equivalent.
The XBox One X specs are basically 1440p, and at best 1800p with upscaling. No way can it do native 4K 60 fps unless the games are restricted to on rail rendered games or Indies. 4K 30 fps can be done with upscaling only and severe compromises to image quality settings, custom resolutions below 2160p are what you can likely expect otherwise.
I wonder if there's even regulation on this stuff, but the only way you're going to get uncompromised 4K, is to build a PC.

Whats crazy is every video that comes out Sony peeps talk smack about the x not being at native 4k 60. What yall are forgetting is that the x can handle 4k 60. Its up to the developer to do so. If a company doesnt know how to do it then thats their fault. Look at forza look at gears of war. 4k 60 hmmmmm sounds like they told the truth to me. The windows store version is a dumpster fire, but this X version isn't looking any better. It looks to be running medium across the board here, with worse reflections than the original One version. No idea how that happened.
From the video alone you can see it's using the lowest shadow preset, lowest volumetric light preset and there's no way its running effects or global illumination at high, those are extremely taxing, they would go with other higher settings before those I think The only setting that's probably high is textures, which should be ultra, and maybe geometry.
I can run the game at 1440p no upscaling at damn near 60fps with those settings, and I have the Windows store version unfortunately.
Played this on a 60 inch screen at 720p on a new noobly built gtx 1060. I thought the game was locked to 720p as I couldnt change it at first, but when I finally did get it changed to 1080p 30 mins into the game all I could say was wow what a difference. No shit right. But it was the first time I actually saw in somewhat realtime the difference between 720p and 1080p on the same game.
Considering that these glitches don't appear in the other versions, an update is definitely to be expected.
There should be defined minimums. Not "desireable", which would be higher, but minimums no developper is allowed to go lower to pass quality control in each platform.:
Switch portable: 540p 30 with lowest graphics settings (0%) for multi platform games.
Switch console: 720p 30 with low graphics setting (25%)
Xbox One: 900p 30 with medium graphics (50%)
Ps4: 1080p 30 with slightly better visuals than X1
Ps4 Pro: Ckecherboard 4K 30fps or native 1080p 60fps (depending on cpu load), with high settings (75%)
X1X: Native 1800p 30fps with highest settings (100%) or native 1080p with highest settings plus high levels of multi sample anti aliasing and SMAA.

It's remedy the liers. They said that Quantum Break was gonna ran at 1080p on the vanilla Xbox One, but the reality is a 720p with MSAA 4x with temporal reconstruction increase to 1080p. A 900p or @ 1080p with TAA would look better and perform better and a 1800p or even native 4k with TAA would look better and perform better
This is a really heavy game, even the gtx 1080 can't run this at 4K 60 on High-ultra settings

Have this game on PC after picking it up cheap. Too bad it is not as good as they hyped it up to be. It looks good graphically thats about it. As for being demanding on PC, my rig pushes it just fine.

Why did they remove the 1080p option. I'd much prefer the hardcoded option to set the game to 1080p on the Xbox One X over assuming it's not using dynamic resolution scaling... that practise of removing features to make the player experience more enjoyable is just plain wrong. I hate seeing developers do that sort of stuff, it's good to see consoles supporting 4K but the option to run at 1080p native for more FPS over sub par 4K outweighs the idea of a 4K experience for me.
I would imagine they simply couldn't get it to hold a solid enough framerate at 1080p. If the end result of 1080p was still a 30fps lock for smoothness, then the 1440p mode would still suit 1080p gaming, while also giving a better looking image than 1080p

I think the setting is closer to high setting on xbox one. But GTX 1070 can play it easily 1440p max with over 30fps (steam version, not the broken windows store version). GTX 1070 > Xbox one X in this game
But it still a demanding game. Native 4K 60fps (with no drops) on max setting is not possible with single GPU

because your cpu might much better. the only 4k is the GPU in that X system. The cpu is just horrible and it's clocked at 2,3ghz. That is low for system today. They went AMD and cheapeast possible CPU for their "new" hardware. Just because it has many cores doesn't mean it can deliver. The speed is NOT up to the most tasks with fps dips. This is the result. Can't support this system. At least in the past when they asked 500 euro for their new hardware they delivered hardware wise much better
Honestly, consoles should've focused on visual fidelity more than resolution. Those 6Tflops of GPU power could've kickstarted a new generation (with a change in CPU)

And even games that use the dynamic resolution 99% of the time there keep a solid 4k resolution native! Then there's all the 4k assist the Xbox one x has do some research or at least play on one you will change your mind very fast.

Now I'm not brand loyal and I am somewhat wealthy so I own all of the consoles including the pro. But it is definitely not worth an upgrade if you already own a PS4
Rosencrantz I don't have a single game that plays 4k on my pro. Not only that but my ex downloads higher texture packs close to a PC. Plus it has a UHD Blu-ray player. Which my family and I use a lot. I have a 75" QLED, so I like to have equipment that will take advantage of the purchase of such a high quality TV. And no, I did not have an original PS4 so buying the pro was a no-brainer. But with all the games I have played on The X I have to say, it's a much better experience. It's still early in the pro and X's life cycle but I can't help but notice how close games like Wolfenstein 2 and Assassin's Creed origin look to my buddies PC version. And he has a $1,800 PC build

So I don't even bother purchasing those I just go to Redbox and spend about $9 to beat the game and then I return it. So while they do have more exclusive games currently they just aren't worth a retail purchase in my opinion. But just look at the news media Outlets. Almost every one of them say that the extra hundred dollars is well Justified. I hate brand loyalty so I will always own all of the consoles. Because I really hate my options be limited. So you won't see me thrashing other people's choices when it comes to their Hobbies. But Microsoft is clearly on a good path with the services and Hardware now in place. It just needs a little bit more first-party software

I'd think MS would want to showcase this game in the best way possible. They might have trusted one or two people as DF suggested for this patch. But, more resources are needed.
I think an unlocked fps mode would be neat at 720p, or variable res that targets 900p at least. Just clean up the glitches. The downsampling on 1080p displays looks nice at least.

Really hope they fix these glitches by the time I get my X. Quantum Break is the game I'm most excited to play on the X, and I don't want the experience to be tainted. I honestly would've took the minor frame drops over those intense visual glitches. And the fact that they scaled some textures back down to 720p is incredibly disappointing. But it doesn't look like it takes away from the experience.

The Remedy developers are wizards, but they followed the wrong approach. All that realtime global illumination means little when the game can only be played at low res and everything looks like a blurry mess.
I remember a similar situation with Rage, when Carmack engineered a magic engine where the entire map could be hand painted without a repeated texture everywhere. An amazing achievement, but at the end of the day storage and practical limits forced everything to look like low res garbage.
