    I *really* liked the section where you pointed out the difference between the tame live action scenes hindered by budget, and the bombastic in-engine stuff. Showing that train crashing through a building after that shitey wee dunt of a car crash (supposed to be a hard-hitting piece of action) really highlights the disconnect in means available to realise the team's ambition for each section. Amazing video as always man, well done.

      Then u have pretty low standarts.
      The ganeplay was trash the live cinematic stuff was a cool concept, but it was just good towards the end, before that it was... cringy and semi well acted at best.
      The only real cool thing was the story and how it remeained tension until the last minute. Ambitious project with a good idea, but bad execution.
      ... i guess thats because its such a unique and fresh concept. You can tell that the actors (despite being very reknown and talented) needed to warm up with the idea of a video game. I am sure thats why the acring and the story deliverance is so much better towards the end.

    I know most people thought Quantum Break was mediocre, but I really loved that game, the division between the show and the game created a great pace to play the game at, and the gameplay itself making you have to be constantly moving made it way more engaging than any other cover shooter I've played
    To say nothing of the extremely well done sci fi story

  • @XxOverkillVR

    I really liked all the story that you learn about the world and the plot through the collectibles and stuff in the environment. I especially liked the whiteboards of the villains plans near the end where the resolution of the textures was so great that you can read every single little detail and post it note. Those white boards alone were a major factor of why I liked the game so much. There is just so much story to discover if you take the time to look around which is not only extremely in depth but also makes it feel very organic. IDK maybe thats just me.

    • @BrorealeK
      @BrorealeK 6 років тому +4

      At the end of the day Dragon Age II's worst aspect was that 4chan dunked on it. Meaning that no matter what, playing it after the fact is a pleasant surprise. And I think it's a worthwhile game in its own right, with its legitimate flaws pretty severe, but by no means dealbreaking.

    • @innoclarke7435

      I think that's me with Arma. The series is so poorly optimised, has such poor scripting that breaks all the time, has systems potentially too complex for their own good, but the damn thing just grabbed me and has never let go, for reasons I can never quite figure out.

    • @TheRedKing247
      @TheRedKing247 6 років тому +9

      That's exactly the thing with Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. I know for a fact they aren't as good games as Fallout: New Vegas, certainly not as good rpgs as it, but there's just something about the worlds they create and the places they make you want to explore that makes is just so much more illogically appealing to me no matter now buggy or simple the games are in comparison, despite the fact I love New Vegas too.

  • @Omahdon
    @Omahdon 6 років тому +68

    I got the game through the Humble Monthly Bundle and tore through it pretty enthusiasticall! Though I'm glad I didn't pay the full RRP for it for the variety of reasons you mentioned (the TV show is just. SO. GODDAMN. BORING). Honestly, it felt like the game might have been better off as some kind of Telltale Game-like narrative experience.
    That said, I did LOVE the amount of world-building extra information that's just littered everywhere; even as I became acutely aware that I was spending up to twenty minutes at a time wandering around and reading the emails of people who should really have locked their devices c'mon guys this time travel technology stuff is meant to be top secret we need to do better

      People hate it because it went against the original character and set him up as a replacement when he's not as enjoyable or interesting. Their arguments tend to also completely ignore how good the combat system is and how unique the level design is which is yknow some of the most important parts of a game. Also as mentioned the soundtrack was like really good.

    • @pipyakas
      @pipyakas 6 років тому +9

      13Hyrule mostly because in an action game about style, the rebooted Dante is not what they want to play as. I was very disappointed when they didn't keep the original smoking junkie dante when they revealed the game, that dante seemed to be more interesting, although given how bad the writing was and the general execution of the cast as a whole, I wonder could it changed anything

    I felt the exact same way you did after I finished playing Quantum Break, just completely unsure of how to feel. But after a few months, I came to understand that it's an ambitious, solid core completely suffocated by modern design ideas and philosophies. I'm surprised you really didn't breakdown the actual gameplay more here, your coverage in this one is a little scattershot. Was hoping to hear more about how there's just no hipfire at all, the general lack of enemy variety, or how the powers have little to no synergy, with their effect on the environments being incredibly limited and binary. At least, that was my takeaway from my experience. Otherwise, an excellent video. You're right about how Time Travel is one of the few things this game handles exceptionally well, Closed loop theory was a brilliant choice.

    I enjoyed the time I spent on this game. I played it on hard, read and collected everything, did all the junctions and unlocked all the achievements. As you said, the story is REALLY good and I also loved the Sci-fi concepts. And I recommend to anyone that if you want to really understand everything, know the characters backgrounds and discover nice easter eggs that you just have patience and don't rush the game. But I must agree that the way the story is told and presented is not the best... And yes, the gameplay and mechanics also needed more depth and development time. I'm pretty sure that if MS didn't demand Remedy to make an "interactive game connected with a live action series" and let the guys do what they do best, it would've been a better GAME at the end... Because of that, when I think about it, I do know it's not a bad game, for I had nice times playing it. But I feel like it was just an one time only event. And I'll probably never play it again. Which is sad.
    Nice video btw, dude. Keep up the great work! :)

    I adore Quantum Break, and you accurately identified all pros and cons. The timetravel plot is really outstanding, and the live action episodes made the virtual characters seem that more real - because they were! (In a weird reverse uncanny valley effect) - I only wished there was more combat to play with your time powers. The full combat loop with all effects firing on all cylinders is truly a sight to behold. Maybe they should have added a trial mode with combat arenas.

    I guess I enjoyed Quantum Break more than you did. I have Alan Wake as an 8 of 10 game. While I feel Quantum Break is a 7.5 out of 10. Personally I think Max Payne 2 is Remedy’s best game. Unfortunately with Remedy’s relations with MS soured and the studios own slow output, I don’t think Alan Wake or Quantum Break will see sequels.

    • @HimmeetValot
      @HimmeetValot 6 років тому +8

      Yeah, unfortunately Alan Wake and Quantum Break only became cult hits as i really like those games, i would be more generous and give Alan Wake 9.5 and QB 8.5, but that being said i am a big film buff and dont mind the gameplay being mediocre so much. So its really unfortunate that these game probably wont get sequels, but the good thing is that Remedy is making something new again called P7 and singleplayer for CrossFire 2, as i am a bit afraid of Remedy going down because of the poor sales of their games.

      MrReyno Tanks They are focusing on other projects with another publisher. I hope this gives them much more free reign than it ever did when they were working Microsoft. The studio is nothing but talent and have pushed gaming to both its story telling and mechanical limits .

    • @Reyma777
      @Reyma777 6 років тому +4

      Remedy has typically made single player games of short length (6-10 hrs). Single players games seem to have increasingly hit and miss sales. For every Horizon Zero Dawn sales success we get several AAA single player titles that under perform or straight up flop , e.g. Prey (2017), Evil Within 2, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. Remedy makes games that are subjectively of quality, however, their titles don't have mass appeal. I wish the studio the best of luck on their next projects. However, as they are no longer paired with a big publisher, I don't expect P7 to have comparable production quality to Alan Wake and Quantum Break.

    I made the mistake to play this game after finishing Control, and boy if its gameplay is ROUGH, weapons feels like pea shoter, little enemy variety, the costant tease of polymorph and never even seeing one in game, no hipfire, sluggish movements and ability casting. Story wise is fine, cool take on time travel, Beth is easily the highest point of the narrative, her personality and development just squash the others, while Jack, Paul and Derrick (I dont even remember the character name) in the end felt just by the number cliché.
    I mean if you find this on sale or on Game pass its very well worth your time to play, just it feels like it doesn't have that standout point were it excels, wether is gameplay, story or style even. An interesting experiment that deserves the lukewarm reception

    This game was able to draw me deep within its world and made me think about about its story and characters even when I was not playing it. I began to play it again right after I finished it in order to get more out of this world, including the stuff in the alternate story branches and what I missed on my first play-through. That's rare these days. The darker story path was just brutal and uncompromising when it comes to that. One of the best and most lovingly-crafted games of its generation, for sure. Trendy critics like this guy will bash it because it's an Xbox One exclusive, demands that you to think about more than basic puzzle-solving and doesn't limit itself to the currently-hip single player game design tropes.

    Excelent pacing and editing on this video.
    I haven't really touched video games since 2014ish, but have been following then through essayists like you. If I recall, Alan Wake had similar issues of being amazingly deep story wise and genuinely scary at times, but with an ending that felt rushed and flat. The gameplay ended up devolving into fairly repetitive segments of cheesing the light and revolver combo, breaking into shooting gallery setpieces.
    Having never played Max Paine or its sequels, maybe I'll give that a shot.
    Thanks again for a great video, Raycevick.

    On its own, DmC Devil May Cry is a decent game. But when compared to its past predecessors of the original series, especially to Devil May Cry 3 and 4, or even the first game, it pales in comparison and might in fact be one of the weakest entries (DmC is however slightly better than DMC2).
