First FFXIII graphics was way ahead of its time. Art to this day is still so unique, so detailed, and so fantasy. Loved the launch trailer too.

Not everyone has a connection that is practical to watch video in 4K and with UA-cam's iffy compression i'm not even sure you gain much for that unless you are watching it on 60"+ TV
I'm watching it on a 24" Monitor and so 1080p is perfectly fine - though to be honest other than a more consistent frame rate I couldn't see a huge different between the version until I bumped it up from 720p to 1080p and even then it was only on bumpy armour and hair. (maybe shadows).
I guess I'm just not as pick as some people.
But it's good advice to suggest the Ps3 versions for better FMV.

When it was announced FFXIII was going to be on BC, I pulled out my disc from storage to check the difference. Only thinking I'd pop it in for a few minutes to check the graphical difference. Here I am now playing it ever since. I put down RDR2 to play FFXIII... and man does it look good. Never finished it when I first got the game but I think I'll probably finish the trilogy now.
I did the exact same thing. I put down AC Odyssey and RDR2 for FF13. Never saw that coming. I put in 16 hours over the weekend (lol). It looks amazing now on the X.

@@DarqStalker I completely agree. I think that's why I got drawn back into so much. It's interesting how it was criticized at the time for being so linear, but now in 2018 I feel that it is one of its strongest points.
Not only the massive Resolution improvement...but most importantly framerates..all three games are now closed to locked 30fps now while the PS3 version is 17-20fps on some of the same scenes.
Yeah, I played them like year ago on pc and couldn't understand why everyone was trashing them.
Ok, I can understand trashing on 13-2, it had not very good timetravelling story and obnoxious "too japanese" design. Played it for 10 hours and then went on youtube.
But 13 and lightning returns are one of my favorites now

It's a massive about face from the start of this gen with their game drm, online always limitations etc when they were being lead by that imbecile Don Mattrick. Things will only get better from here. Exclusives are the only thing the ps4 has over the Xbox One, but when that barrier is broken and Microsoft produce new exclusives from their new set of studios, it will force Sony to improve every other aspect of its platform in order to remain competitive. Good for the whole industry.
Yeah, limited AAA exclusives, "TV Gate", "DRM Gate", focus on old games instead of new, awful UI, "uncompromised 4K" console..really for the players.. lol

I re-bought all of these. Popped in FFXIII and I am lost into the world again! This game gets a lot of crap that it doesn't deserve and looks absolutely incredible on the Xbox One X. Thank you Square-Enix and Xbox!!

I dusted off my ps3 and played this and realized I was hooked all over again. A very underappreciated game, especially after the dryness of XV. I can imagine how much better the one x version is...may have to buy one now.
All this for free if you already have the game. And still there's people who thinks back compat is just a thing to bring old games to the Xone. smh

@Dr. Loomis Yeah, me too. I only played exclusives like halo and gears of war on my xbox one x, but the third party games' best performance and backcompat is where the X truly shines. I think X is overall a very good 2nd console to have.
Because of things like this, the Xbox One X is really the best value for money and best place to play an amazing selection of games.

The xbox 360/ps3 gen is in my opinion the best gen we had since the snes gen. So glad xbox one is preserving the generation for the future in such incredible way.

As a man of the 16 bit era, I completely agree with you mate. And it's one of the reasons why my X is now my personal fave console of this gen (I own everything, LOL). I've decided that I'm going to go for a full physical PAL Xbox 360 game collection... I'm half way there :D
It's the best generation ever, for me. So many new IP that spawned franchises. Assassin's Creed, Dishonored, Borderlands, Mass Effect, COD Modern Warfare and Black Ops sub series, Red Dead Redemption, Injustice. Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat returned to form, sports games had a Renaissance, rise of digital distribution brought back a lot of the best games from Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, etc.

I was under the impression that DF reported more about the technical stuff and didn't try to push their opinion on the actual gameplay.

AWESOME! This is truly a great update. I missed out on these games the first time but I will fix that now for my Xbox One X. I was going to try to track down the physical copies of these games but right now Xbox is having a huge Black Friday Sale in their online store and all 3 FF 13 games are going for $7.99 each. Well worth it! Again one of the MANY reasons I am so glad I have an Xbox One X!

If you're an existing Xbox one owner it might be underwhelming at first because the ui is all the same but everything content wise is so much better in 4k (for games if they're enhanced)
I got mine at at Shopko last March... They had 20% off all electronics, and I had a store wide 25% off coupon, and traded my original X1 at Gamestop at the same time when they had a $150 cash trade in going on... So I got my X1X for $150... It was a perfect storm for me...

FF13 was a beautiful game when it came out (on PS3). Glad to see a video appreciating the art, which deserves it ... since this game gets hate bombed all the time, and almost all discussion of FF13 is overwhelmingly negative.
I much preferred the overall experience when I got to Gran Pulse, but I enjoyed the battle system throughout the game and have an overall good time with 13. Had never got around to 13-2 and just picked it up yesterday for xbox. Cant wait to play it on the X
The ps3 version was indeed the superior version, but even on 360, it still made my jaw drop back then!
Agreed, this game is so gorgeous, and it never gets the appreciation it deserves for that. To this day, one of the best looking HD era games. SE's artists are just incredibly talented, and it clearly shows with FFXIII.

Agreed. After a decade, I've finally realised that they're great (even though I bought FF13 on day one back in the day and ferociously dismissed it as trash on online gaming forums). It hurts me to say this but...they're absolutely stellar games. They're arguably even better now.
already played the trilogy in 4k with better graphics/settings than this at 60fps last year was fun to play a second time around

It's still the same piece of garbage that was years ago. nothing's changed but the graphics. Unless I missed something like added content to the original game that doesn't make it s*** anymore.

Final Fantasy XIII is easily one of the greatest games ever made and its sequels are absolutely fantastic as well ^^
Playing on a 4k hdr tv, it feels like a brand new game. I wasn’t sure why I kept my copies, but im glad I did!
Xbox One started out rough but this attention to detail by Microsoft is making Xbox One essential for serious gamers.

I never understood all the hate behind FFXIII. The first game was an amazing showcase on what the future of final fantasy would look like, XIII-2 had the best story out of all of them (caius, noah and yeul really made that game) and lightning returns, though the story was weaker than the rest, had amazing gameplay and wrapped up the saga in the best way leaving almost no loose ends.
if you ask me, XV should be considered the bastard child of the final fantasy franchise. that game started out amazing as XIII versus and then square scrapped a great game to recreate it as a boyband bromance game with an incomplete story bombarded with plot holes. also its worth mentioning that XV literally only had about 25 hours of story gameplay which any long time final fantasy player can tell you, is blasphemous (every mainline final fantasy game up to that point has always had a minimum of 40 hours story gameplay).
I somewhat liked FF13, I just did not like Snow and Hope during the first half and never liked Vanille. IN my opinion, Lightning, Sazh and Fang were the best. FF13-2 I only liked Caius and Noel. I did not like the time travel and I did not like Serah mostly because she took away Lightning's thunder and could have been replaced by Lightning. Lightning Returns has the best combat out of the three but the weakest story and worst art style.
But I agree with you about FF15 being the most poorly managed FF game in the series history.
15 also has a completely broken combat system that makes every fight trivial af, and the endgame is repetitive garbage.
I love the art design in FF XIII.
Well that might be the only good thing about it aside from visuals/graphics......the story is shit, the characters and dialogue are annoying as hell....this game has almost everything that I generally hate about JRGPs, all the worst sides of them. Luckily it didnt make me lost faith completely in genre as whole, but try out some other games like Lost Odyssey and FFX that were lot better experiences. So ye, I dont wonder why many FF fans say this is one of the worst games in the franchise and its shame, cause the art, visuals and some of the character models are really great.

I get why FF fans hate on XIII but I still like it but I can completely understand why long time fans don't like it. However, I believe its better in many ways to XV. At least XIII has old skewl turn based combat xD.

At this stage in the generation, I have way too many games yet to play (especially on my X). I actually put aside AC Odyssey and RDR2 (surprisingly) just to put 16 hours into FF13 over the weekend. It's one of the best gaming experiences that I've had this year oddly enough. FF13 is actually a really fantastic game.

Really glad to see this get bc. I remember getting this game after playing Crisis Core and Dissidia. It was my first main Final Fantasy title and I loved it. Those six characters will always hold a special place in my heart. Even Vanille. It's not my favorite FF anymore since I have gone back and played the older titles, but nothing gives me nostalgia like seeing Lightning's reveal in the opening train cutscene.
Even though I'm one of the minorities here.... The 13 series are some of my fav RPGs of all time, I put 100+ hours into each one especially lightning returns and looking forward to going back to it.
They should remaster this for ps4 and xbox one.
Regarding the region lock, it seems like the xbox one just checks the disc and then downloads the game from whatever region you console is set to. This is also cool because it allows you to play the game in different dubs, while the original 360 discs usually only supported one voicetrack. (German games would for example only feature the German voicetrack) Now you can just set the region to whatever language you want to play it in and then start the download.

Glad to see Square Enix is still doing things with FFXIII. It's one of my all-time favorite games. The world, characters, story and soundtrack are all mindblowing. Such a beautiful and vibrant world.
I'd love to see a complete remastering of it once PS5 comes out. Enhanced graphics, lighting and shading, 60fps lock, native 4k, greatly reduced load times, FMV library, included OST and artwork library and perhaps even a couple minor gameplay tweaks to make the battle system more fluid. Like an option to turn off the paradigm shift animation if you so choose.

Same, playing on a One X and I am astounded at how amazing it looks. Plus the uncompressed CGI cutscenes make a huge difference. Last time I played this game was on a 360 on a 32" 720p TV. Experiencing the enhanced version on a 4K TV is like a brand new game to me. Have fun with your playthrough!

This game is one of beautiful looking game on last generation. The game almost 10 years old but it's still look better than half of current generation graphics
There's literally nothing a fully made remaster could do with this game that hasn't been done by Microsoft's Back Compat wizards, aside from any actual extra content.

I’m so excited to play Lightning Returns - I’ve had the 360 version in the plastic since it came out, and I just didn’t have the chance to play it!
I honestly loved ff13 and can easily say it’s my favorite. The incredible world designs, the characters, the cutscenes, it was all so incredible that it really transported you to that world. Sure it was linear but like we realized with ff15, open world doesn’t mean always good. I honestly haven’t even touched ff15 and don’t plan to because it feels so unlike a ff game. Hoping a return to form with ff16.
Absolutely amazing. Mad props to MS for not only making backwards compatibility a priority but also for working with developers to enhance some original games. This is a great way to "remaster" a game cheaply and efficiently.
This is one of the reasons why I love my XBox. The haters can say what they want, even though they are right about a lack of exclusives. The XBox One, particularly the X, has a lot going on. :)
Its not a remaster, it has all the same textures and assets of the 360, all they did was checked the 4k option box and that's it, they added nothing new to it.

Saber's Edge, Blinded By Light, Fang's Theme, Defiers of Fate, March of the Dreadnaughts, The Gapra Whitewood, The Sunleth Waterscape, Dust to Dust, & The Archylte Step to name a few of my favorite tracks.
I agree, this is a very impressive upgrade! If only Sony would do the same, I'd love to play this trilogy again in higher quality. I had a lot of fun playing it the first time, even on the 360! Thanks for the in-depth analysis, guys!

Oh you have NO idea, dude. Just look at the Kingdom Hearts Sony fanboys towards the series being on Xbox. Needless vitriol towards a console they don't play at all because the series is coming to the console when Square Enix are a game company that'll port games to whatever systems they want to & Kingdom Hearts isn't a Playstation-exclusive series. Especially when only 3 games, in their original forms (no rereleases or ports are being counted here) were released on Sony systems only, yet they'll act like they aren't. Entitled gamer fanboys at their absolute worst, ladies & gents.
I got all the dlc and just picked up all 3 for $30.00 on ebay I also have all 3 strategy guides so I am all the way ready to replay all 3 of them and get the achievements that I am missing on my new xbox one x just need to put my 2tb firecuda in my xbox one x so I can get the most out of it on my tcl 49' 4K tv with HDR and my logotech g506 5.1 surround sound since I just played them on the 360 this is a huge step up for me
'not possible to get 60 fps on pc' I dont know what you tested but that most certainly is possible, I use to play this on my old 290X at 1440p (originally had a freesync) If I remember rightly you had to notch the shadow resolution down and make sure resolution was set manual otherwise fps would be all over the place but by no means do you need a top end rig to run this at 60fps (sadly) now though you pretty much cannot run this on nvidia hardware with newer drivers thanks to some really wierd ass render resolution bug which physically locks you to 720p regardless of settings, only bypass is using DSR (but thats a pain because desktop scaling with it) also for some reason if you didnt have a controller plugged in that would sometimes screw with res/fps (no idea why) just a bad port that never got updated

@jvalex18 I have actually played through it 2 weeks ago there were a stutter here and there but fixed it with some help of Google after playing through the full game it was a smooth experience tbh the thing is the with the fix that I used the game caps at 59fps and not 60 but it's a frame differnce nobody would notice it

I kind of wish I had waited to play XIII until now. I played it on the 360 and the FMVs were horrible! I didn't have a PS3 at the time though so I was stuck with the 360 version. The FMVs were a major disappointment. The artifacting was so bad that it constantly distracted me.
However, I still enjoyed the game. I even took the time to get all the achievements and I'm glad I did because it forced me to experience parts of the game I would have probably missed, like some of the tougher enemies and optional boss fights. They were actually really fun and that was when the combat system really felt invigorating to use.
I've always meant to play XIII-2 and Lightning Returns but I just never got around to it. Now might be a good time to pop that copy I bought years ago XIII-2 into my X. :)

This game holds up quite well, definitely an underrated entry in the series. Would be nice if SE did some basic improvements like high resolution textures, 4k videos, and 60 fps, would rival most current gen games with these changes.

Been wanting to give FF13 another go for years, hoping against hope that the PC version will be fixed.
Weird how in 2018, it's actually Xbox One X version that I might end up playing.
The PC version never got updated, but still it is the best version. You can easily get it to 4k30 if you have a really good pc.
It would be nice if Microsoft would share the re-encoded cinematics to update the PC port. But they'll keep them exclusively to try and sell their more expensive console.

You know what? This makes me incredibly happy, even though I wasn’t the hugest fan of the game. I probably needed to stick with it more, but the only thing that really stuck out to me was the music. Seriously, XIII had AMAZING music.
I hope the Xbox team continues with backward compatibility since last-gen had amazing games which didn't get good ports to PC and this feature is honestly a system seller.
Absolutely. I've been converted from a PC gamer to an Xbox gamer thanks to the X. It's an amazing piece of gaming hardware. I love physical games!

And I'd really hope SE could just release some sort of director's cut for the game, just like in FFXII. It should include:
- Hard mode in first two games if it's not already there
- Bleed/Wound feature for the first game
- Additional post game portal for first game that lead to unused arks
- All outfits unlocked for the second game
- Cheats/Boosters
- "Day select" for the third game (which does not reset progress unless an option is chosen) available post game
- "Infinite days and enemies" for the third game (omegas only available in the omega lair) available post game (which is effectively the additional day 13 that loops itself over and over)
- flying for the third game

I remember that you didn't mention these highly compressed videos back in the day because you used to be 360 fanboys. I hope you have learned from that mistake and aren't biased anymore when it comes to comparing games. Quote from your digital foundry article back in 2010 "On low-motion scenes, the extreme compression of the 360 FMVs still results in a fairly decent picture." .............um no, except for the very first cutscene, everything else looked like 240p youtube videos. That's far from decent. Even the ending cutscene looked like crap.
The quality of music kept increasing with each iteration though, definitely!
Now all Microsoft needs to do for their fans is one...only one exclusive to show us what the x can do with all that power. We need that.

Yup. You're forgetting that these are mid gen upgrades and not the full gen leap. While the PS4 Pro isn't as good as the X, it's parity with it's base console keeps everyone happy. While base console owners of the Xbox One are pretty much left wayyyy behind.

Ok I’m so glad to hear them mention the PC version not hitting 60 regularly. I was pulling my hair out wondering why I was dropping frames when my PC was way above the recommended requirements…which is a shame as it looks beautiful on the PC.

Most of the time I wouldn't expect anything more than perhaps a slight image quality and performance bump, but maybe some games they'll really go back and patch up to take advantage of the Xbox Series X. It's weird how an Xbox One game will have to detect if it's on Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X? It can adjust to all of those well?
