This project has consumed my life for the last few months 😂 But hopefully you’re gonna enjoy this one, as I really think Tencent is such a fascinating business - it’s one of the world’s most valuable and influential companies, and yet most people know very little about it… Tencent is often surrounded by controversy - including extreme surveillance, censorship, and brutally cloning & crushing competitors. And many people are concerned by just how many companies Tencent is now involved with. And yet in many ways, this is also an incredible success story… Tencent went from having only $1000 in their bank account & being on the edge of bankruptcy, to becoming a gigantic global empire & creating ‘the everything app’ that Chinese people live their entire lives through. It's not just the size and power of the company that's scary, it's the fact that they did it so incredibly quickly and were able to fight off large corporations while doing so. can you imagine if they keep following the same strategy how big they could get in the next decade!?
Apps live on hardware. Hardware is made from materials. Materials are acquired using fuel. Fuel requires natural resources (in decline) and machinery (dependent on fuel). Tencent is vaporware living in a world of deluded consoomers so far from any real world constraint it's no wonder people imagine it's powerful. Verizon, At&t, and Spacex gatekeep nearly every routing node on the planet. What's the value of an app with no connectivity? What's the internet with no electricity? The real world has real, tangible wealth. China imports nearly ALL of its liquid fuels and about half of its coal. ALL of which are in decline due to declining EROEI. China imports 35% of its food. Now ask yourself: Without food and fuel what's really valuable? 95% of fertilizer is made from natural gas. Exxon Mobil is the 8th largest company on the planet by revenue and the largest in tangible assets. What's a business worth when its dependencies cannot be met?
I started casually watching this fully expecting to click off after a few minutes, over an hour later I’m completely engrossed in the narrative. Absolutely incredible job
This movie was so good it feels illegal to watch it for free. Thank you to Magnates Media for taking your time to put out the best, very useful content. We couldn't ask for a better documentary channel. You deserve the best.
Amazing that people still cheer on the activision-blizzard merge and don't understand why conglomerates and monopolies are so bad for us and so good for the plutocrats. The only thing we can do is spread the word and learn.
Very much agreed. Top notch documentary-creating. I recommend this channel to anyone curious to understand the complex relationships between various shady corporations and the average consumer.
I'm a Chinese living in China, thrilled to see such fantastic content being produced, much of which I previously had no clue about. Among my peers, Pony Ma and Tencent have a bad reputation because they've churned out many plagiarized games loaded with tons of microtransactions, squeezing out the space for many excellent games to thrive. In the eyes of my elders, Tencent is just the company behind WeChat and QQ. Thanks to your video, I now have a clear understanding of Tencent's early days and its complete development journey. However, at the same time, I feel saddened by the one-sided reporting of China by Western media over the years, as well as the numerous misunderstandings and biases in the comments.
The West and US are very sinophobic , being so brainwashed as that by their media and politicians. These are vassals of corporate America. The citizens were bullied into slavery, but still arrogant of their country. And China is always their scapegoat, from decades of brainwashing.
i was watching this video thinking would be short because of the “ending”. turned out that those 10 minutes were an introduction. man, you put lots of work into these amazing documentaries. keep up the great work, bro
I was listening with my screen off and when he said we are going to discuss Tencent. I thought I was halfway through the vid😂😂. It hadn’t even started yet😂😂
Well...I'm a Chinese citizen based in the city of Chongqing... I can tell you this, most Chinese people know the fact that has been shown in this video... But the majority of the country doesn't seem to care... You might think they are brain washed... But I think it's not that simple... China is so different from other parts of the world, you need to take really close look at it to get really basic understanding of the country...
oh trust thats on purpose. whoever is actually running this shit hole doesnt want you knowing the truth. mainstream media is used to misinform and control the narrative.
This is probably the first and the last UA-cam channel where I spend over an hours on a single video. Fascinating stories along with top notch editing aside, I really appreciate your narration that evolves over time since your first videos. A clear voice over is what kept many non native English speakers me included from watching most similar lengthy contents on UA-cam. YOU are the legend.
Tencent doesn't own many other businesses. Tencent doesn't own anything. The Chinese Communist Party owns everything. It's not a blurry line. It's crystal clear to everyone familiar with communism.
This is by far and away the most perfectly edited video I have ever seen. What’s even better is that the content is blazing and marries to the editing precisely in virtually every scene. I can only imagine how many hours have gone into the production! You are at the very top of your game here, I see good things for this channel.

The research and work you have done for this video is insane. I'm from China and also a QQ user since 2005. Being through this video remains me a lot of my childhood. Tencent's story is truly unique and putting all those pieces of its history together for a person that not grow up in China is crazy amount of works.
they are spreading a fair amount of misinformation and shedding bad light only on chinese corporations, and also considering that he mentions the now basically abandoned social credit system, makes me feel like he just hasnt done enough research. an easy delve into the chinese communities turns up simple results from not just websites, but the people themselves that disproves or just straight up debunks a lot of his points. though i see where hes coming from, i do not think putting misinformation in between real information is a good idea morally.

Love or hate Tencent, but if there's anything to learn from this video, is that it's absolutely undeniable how corporate ruthlessness and not giving a nickel about any morals or ethics made Tencent become the business titan it is today.
Corporate ruthlessness? There is no corporations in a totalitarian regime. Just tentacles of the government. Not like US and other countries’ corporations at all.

I'm a recording engineer in the US, and like 4 out of 5 jobs come via Tencent in some way. Video game scores, film scores, app music, commercials, ADR, everything you can think of! For the 20+ years I've been doing this, you could usually trace most projects back to Disney, but lately its shifted to Tencent. Can't complain I suppose, they are giving lots of people work! In 10 years or so, when we have all been enslaved by Tencent, hopefully they will look back at the work I've done for them and treat me more like a pet instead of sending me to work in the mines. . .

Wow, what a masterpiece of a video. Cant believe Tencent is so huge yet almost no one in the west talks about how its bigger than most companies here. Amazing
Very good journalism, not just a government fluff piece, but not attacking any personalities either. Absolutely applaudable how you brought up the issues with the Chinese government and the psyche that Chinese people have. It's absolutely a must that everyone knows about the human rights issues, and the active process of covering it. Good details on what was happening overseas at the same time, and the importance of anti-competitive behaviour and it's downsides. Only gripe I had with this was that it was a bit over-dramatic with the sounds and transitions, but that did increase the quality feel of it.
This excerpt from the text "not just a government fluff piece" and this other excerpt "It's absolutely a must that everyone knows about the human rights issues" follow exactly the manual on how to write a misinformation piece. The truth is that human rights are the last concern of the US government. The primary american goal is to maintain its hegemony over any other country that threatens it.
@@s.v.discussion8665 Firstly, I don't remember asking. Secondly I'm not from the US so your threats are not directed towards me, but Europe should absolutely be more vary and self-sufficient as well. I wish that people wouldn't be corrupted by money, but they are and thus there are products and services that have so much chinese ownership that it can affect what is tolerated, for example having protection against a certain president while other public figures are allowed to be criticized. Finally, it pains me when some US citizens are extreme rightists or leftists, and don't realize that they should work towards a common objective; to not feed this nation that is using democratic organizations and freedom speech to drive a non-democratic idea where there is no freedom of speech. Many extremist news outlets twist US into a bad thing, but that's because things are pretty good there, and it's the smaller things where people are making a mountain of a mole hill. Thank you in advance for a civilized debate.
Well same thing is happening all over the world. On the west corporations make same thing with different faces labeled on with different names but all funnel to the same people in charge doing some digging. I am not taking sides... But in the West governments just fool people around with the words Freedom while presenting it that way but in fact it's not freedom at all. East at least have the dignity to be honest and transparent even with their own people that they have been monitored. In the west the monitoring from Google etc. is at the same scale as in China - the only difference is they are desperately trying to say otherwise.
@@daissi I agree, but he did also have a point, we are entering a new cold war between China and the U.S, which was going to happen either way as the U.S doesn't like its control of pretty much the entire world stage being threatened.

Nice video. I’ve lived in China for over 10 years, was one of the first users of WeChat and much later even worked at Tencent during the crackdown on tech. Your video does a great job shedding light into a complex company - bravo. The cat and mouse between business and government here is fascinating and deserves a lengthy video by itself. One small correction is that when voice messages first came out it was more about converting older users onto the platform who were less literate or had less dexterity. Voice to text thru NLP software came much later. All the best -T

I remember having nightmares about a company like this forming when I had learned what social media was. I used to read books about monopoly’s and the people who formed them and how they eventually become a part of the government or how the government seizes control of it. Weird ass times we’re living in.
This video is full of Western propaganda about China, and the government cannot obtain or see any chat records without the permission of the court. I think this is the case in any country.
I swear this wasn't an easy video to make - it must have taken you hours and hours and days to make and it's the first video I have ever watched from start to end - thank you so much
Huge mistake to listen to this video when I was about to go to sleep; it kept me awake with all the suspense and incredible infos that I had to watch the entire hour-long video. Awesome work man!!
Prism gate is also a crazy piece of history… but let’s face it.. the richest countries spy on all. Here’s the kicker though; the younger generations have no loyalty… we know we cannot go on like this. We don’t have the resources.. the chips are falling.. think we can adapt or stop something before it happens.. no.. what huge change has happened that was realized by everyone and we worked together to overcome it? None.. you think about world wars.. or wars in general.. even when the earth had a population of just 1.5 billion.. it took a bunch of wheeling and dealing.. backstabbing.. spying.. just to do this.. you think about the pandemic.. third world countries never did get those vaccines.. we never change even if we know it’s best to as a whole.. therefore, we are going to screw ourselves. vast populations are at the mercy of the decisions of a few. :(
Great video, but I have some doubts about certain claims made in it. For example, it mentions that Tencent is controlled by the government, yet its largest shareholder is a South African company. Isn't that contradictory? Another example is the claim about the social credit score system. Why does this easily debunked rumor still appear in the video? Additionally, regarding the claim that a message sent in a group chat is instantly blocked from being delivered to other users, is there any way to achieve this other than through formulaic keyword filtering? And WeChat doesn’t even have keyword filtering. That being said, this is indeed a very well-made video. Looking forward to more videos about policies related to China!
I have lived in china for 4 years till to today but you cannot fathom how important wechat is, it is literally a life line, you simply can't live without it.
I've lived my whole life in Britain and even I have WeChat, though just for communicating with friends from mainland China. I'm not risking putting my money into it, but given that everything's electronic now there's always someone watching if I use one of those quick tapping credit cards that doesn't even need a pin. It worries me.

i think they do. since the advent of the internet governments and the rich(what some call "corporations" but it's really the rich) have been spying on everyone with extreme ease. tencent and china(not the ccp, but all of china) are not the exception. they are the norm. this video tries to single them out.....and that's dishonest. apparently you are one of the few that didnt know. so let me ask you. after learning what you learned. will you stop using the internet and cellular networks? if not, then you're in the same group as everyone else.....business as usual.
One thing I thought pretty early into the video (still watching, still in the prologue): With Tencent's intent to be in everything, and WeChat app being able to do everything... That's seems to be what Zuckerberg wants Metaverse to be, but with VR...

One of the best documentaries I have ever seen. Quality content deserves to be rewarded.
But does the west get represented fairly in china ?
+1 me too
The West and US are very sinophobic , being so brainwashed as that by their media and politicians.
These are vassals of corporate America. The citizens were bullied into slavery, but still arrogant of their country.
And China is always their scapegoat, from decades of brainwashing.

Individual personalities are what drives governments and companies. Individual accountability is a necessary condition for change.
