Long have we waited... The Charmander Highscore video. I think 6600 will definitely happen, likely with 990/2220, or maybe even 1000/2200, but more than that is hard to imagine without an insane new discovery. More generally, I think Pokémon Snap is a fantastic game for highscoring, and even for speedrunning. The skill floor is very low, everyone can get into it and start improving, and the ceiling is as high as you want it to be. You can focus on one pokémon at a time, or go through the whole course improving every score you can. There are many single-pokémon maxed records, which serve as goal scores for new players, and plenty more insane multi-pokémon shots, like Charmander, Squirtle, and Ditto, to name a few. If you can play this game, please do so, you just might find something you really enjoy!
I don't do speedrunning but I really admire the dedication and hype in the speedrunning/worldrecord community. One of a kind in my opinion. I mean I just watched a 20 minute video explaining in detail how to take the perfect charmander picture in a game from '99(?). Not to mention all the other videos explaining games I never knew existed. whitegoose is doing a great job making this kind of stuff interesting and entertaining to outsiders.
I remember some levels in Pilotwings 64 where you have to fly near something in a hang glider to take pictures of it, then land safely, and your score is based on the quality of the picture. But I could never figure out how the picture score was calculated, so I'd just take the best picture I could and hope that it turned out good by sheer chance.
Ryan Pokemon BW2 on the 3DS required you to use the camera to unlock the alternate stage for the legendary Genies. If you wanted Thundurus' other stage you had to play a mini game where the Pokemon runs around your room, similar to Pokemon Go on the phone. We had so many chances to get another Snap but it didnt happen until the Switch. I trust Bandai to deliver quality that it could otherwise not in inferior devices so there's that.
I played Snap throughout elementary, middle and high school. Every now and then id buy a copy at a Flea Market and I guess mom sold it back at garage sale? Its a big part of my life and I loved discussing the games back in early 2000 online. Especially on early UA-cam. Turns out Shrek Superslam has pvp modded on dolphin emulators too. That game was a cult classic in my household. If only it were as big as Melee....
I’m MoneyMike, glad to see the charmander strat evolved since back in the day haha. I clearly wasn’t pestering enough. Pic most likely from the 2008 era, but I didn’t get around to submitting any of my pics until 2012. I was part of a very small group pushing the boundaries of snap back then, so it’s cool to see that more people are playing this competitively. Lmk if you ever do a video on the progression of other snap strategies (I helped launch the two magikarp strategy btw if you are looking for suggested content)
Why doesn't someone use hacks to manually move around the Charmanders, to get an upper bound for the possible score? Obviously this would not count as a record, but it could help the community understand the strategies better.
I did some reverse engineering on Snap a while back, and the way the game determines the size of the pokemon' that are in frame is not as logical (or how) you would think. Also, the game actually captures the scene (and not an actual photo,) which is pretty amusing. The photos are also pre-scored (as in the game determines each individual stat that affects the score) when they are taken, so if a human-possible ACE method is ever discovered, it could be relatively easy to make any photo have max score just by writing bogus data to the photo structure.
Reminder that to get the Pikachu high score picture in this game you have to spam the controls to slow down your cart more than the game normally allows and take a picture of Pikachu riding an Articuno while you're clipped inside the Articuno's body.
Hey goose, I just want to say that i really appreciate everything you do. at the end of 2017-2018 I went through a really hard time with PTSD and dealing with a lot of trauma to the point where I had to take time off work to recover. Your speedlore videos helped me nearly everynight when I was alone in bed for like 3 months. It was something that I could fall asleep to and it made me laugh and feel a lot less alone. One time when you were doing an aztec one you exclaim about a ridiculous run where "jaws was running around!" and I laughed and laughed so loud my landlord called me to keep it down. I don't know, i just want to say I appreciate the content you make and it helped me through a very hard time in my life and I don't know how to thank you. It was cathartic and you offered something other youtubers dont by being incredibly relatable and funny and having really happy innocent content. Out of interest, has anybody else ever tried unlocking the Apples in Pokemon Snap using only the Beach course? I tried it when I was much younger and came incredibly close, but lacked the skill to get the last 100-something points I was short of from the Pidgey and Butterfree(?). Always felt it was an interesting challenge and perhaps even some sort of speerun category based around the fastest Beach only apples unlock could be possible, but I've never seen anybody else throw around the idea or mention having tried it before.
Wow I never knew that you could move to the side on the river level. Blowing my mind in the first three minutes of the video and we haven't even got to the Charmander high scores yet.
I remember Smogon had a competition to get a high score on the Volcano level back in the day; my strategy was to take one of each type of Pokémon on the course, and run the rest of my film out on the Charmanders, since it was easier to get good shots of them. Looking at the leaderboards on Cyberscore, the score I got back then is actually good enough for 13th place on the course. :D I still have the photos I took as proof on my 3DS, maybe I should submit it...
Has there been any romhack work done on this to find a theoretical "perfect tiling" maximum score? I'd love to know what score you'd get with the background entirely filled with charmanders. What about getting 4 of the 5 bonus ones closer and obscuring the 5th?

Would it be possible to create a perfect score with some TAS magic and maybe a squeeze of memory editing to see how high of a score is even technically possible? Just to have an idea on where the actual limit sits.
Is there no Tool-assisted theoretical high score to compare to? I'm not sure how well Pokemon snap emulates for TAS but I have to imagine some theorycrafting would be tested that way
I mean, I feel like the best way to find the real max is to make a doctored photo with some kind of Pokémon position altering hack, and see what can be squeezed out
As someone without any experience at scoring in the game, I feel like the 6370 could be improved if the both charmanders all the way in the back would sit better. The one all in the back left seems to be missing the hop of it's head and the one in the back right is partially hidden by the one in front of it.

Mom: What are you watching? Me: Oh nothing just a video of people trying to get a high score on Pokemon snap by feeding a bunch of Charmanders apples. Mom: But why? Me: You would never understand.
Hmmm... I've never played this game in my life, but from what you said about the scoring in this video, and the fact that you can squeeze extra points out of the back right Charmander by hitting him with a pester ball and then snapping the shot as he's getting up to fit more of him in the frame, could you not also do the same with the back center Charmander? He's slightly cut off at the top in pretty much every high scoring shot. If all of him fit in the frame, perhaps it'd be possible to eke out another 10 or 20 points? Dunno, just seems like it might be worth exploring.
Unlikely. For every size point you get on the bonuses you could have twice that on the primary subject, so you really want the primary subject to be absolutely optimal.
