@@KeertVillanzo The English names have nothing to do with the original design. They came up with those translations/regionalizations waaaay after they actually designed the game. In the original Japanese game it's literally just Rizaado ("lizard"). No specific association with Chameleons.
A Japanese-speaking friend told me that Farfetchd was a reference to a proverb which translates to ‘sometimes a duck comes along carrying a leek’. Ducks are traditionally cooked with leaks, so if a duck comes along carrying one it’s just plain convenient. The meaning of the phrase is therefore roughly akin to ‘don’t look a gift horse in the mouth’ or ‘don’t question unlooked for good fortune’.

I remember the Mareep line being inspired by (at least the titlte of) the book "Do androids dream of electric sheep", and the Torchic line (especially combusken) being a chick you win at a carnival or festival, that doesn't age well or smth. That Pansage-Panpour-Pansear are based on this Japanese tale of 3 monkeys that see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil. Also a bit weird how there are just there Japanese words that can be translated (the bunny shaped apples for Victini, the burglar for Froakie, the clothes for Braixen).

Name pronunciations or any inaccuracies aside I’ve been actually desperate for someone to make a video like this, my special interest is the meanings and inspiration behind all Pokemon names and designs so I ate this video up having it in the background. I’m surprised you didn’t mention some of the Japanese names considering they have some pretty obvious origins. Like how the Abra line are all named after famous magicians. Most infamously Yungerer (Kadabra) being modeled after Yuri Geller. Or the hitmons originally being named after Japanese fighters. The Voltorb line is also meant to be a classic mimic enemy that is a staple of RPG’s.
I love how there isn’t any background aside from a black screen, any background music, any sound effects, or any other further explanations or anything. It’s just the name of the Pokémon, the thing(s) it’s based on, and then it immediately moves onto the next Pokémon, the thing(s) it’s based on, and so on and so forth.
Pidgey is based on a Tree Sparrow, and Spearow is a Sparrowhawk. Paras/Parasect are cordyceps infected cicadas. Pretty sure Dewgong is also based on dugong (manatee)....as the name would suggest. I think Lickitung is also VERY loosely based on giant anteater. Koffing/Weezing also based on volcanic gas vents. Jynx is based on the yokai Yuki-onna. Magikarp/Gyarados also based on the legend of a koi swimming up a mountain to become a dragon...and possibly Japanese windsocks. Hoothoot additionally based on a clock. Spinerak is specifically a Happy Face Spider. Sudowoodo likely also loosely based on Walking Stick insects. Entire Hoppip line based on dandelion from leaves to flower to seed puffs. Espeon based on the yokai Nekomata. Murkrow also based on witch's hat and broom. Pineco is a bagworm. Qwilfish also based on marine mines. Shuckle is most likely based on the macro view of brewer's yeast, as well as a turtle, wine amphora, and slime mold. Donphan also based on a tire.

I love that the list is mostly animals, plants, or common objects, and then it gets to snorlax and its just a randomly specific dude that worked at gamefreak lol

Great video truly I feel like the production could definitely be better and gain more views. Things that are the same inspiration you could put them together, example: “pokemon a b and c are inspired by ____”. You could also instead of reading it off as if it were a bullet point system you could read them off as a full sentence, example “Ekans are based off of the Indian cobras, kakunas are based off literal cocoons” it fleshes out the content a little more. Truly a great concept on this video tho I wish more people talked about it in glad you spoke on this 💯
Your commitment to going over every single Pokémon is commendable, but I feel there are several cases where you don’t get every inspiration, just taking some Johto moms for example, thanks to the beta sprites we know that another inspiration for gligar were the facehuggers from alien and that shuckle was primarily based on snake wine, outside of that the forteress line are also based on bagworms and Murkrow has witch riding a broomstick design motifs
