  • The "Book of Kells" is the oldest and most lavishly decorated of a series of gospel manuscripts produced between the 6th and 9th centuries. Those who have tried to describe it betray almost a sense of disbelief, as though it had emerged from another world. Join Dr. Donna Cozort as she discusses the universal meaning of the symbols in the "Book of Kells".

In 1975 a young Religious Education Teacher at our new comprehensive secondary school called Miss Simms told a class of 11 yr olds that The Book of Kells IS the most beautiful book in the world. i took notice of this & never forgot probably because nobody had before said this about any book.

I’ve just started my study of the Book of Kells. I seriously take issue with the idea of children working on the details. First with the author’s assertion of goddess and fertility worship is she a mother herself. Then wouldn’t she know anything about children’s hand coordination. Then I suggest she view a sutra inscribed on a grain of rice. I guess the Japanese monk is a child as well.
This is arrogance aimed at early people of all colors. Including Christians.

You will feel dumbfounded at the sight of very young, 3- to 5-year-old, child prodigies demonstrating superior coordination as virtuoso pianists and violinists. It is not too difficult to imagine similar coordination in a small number of young child artists. In earlier times, it was quite common that 12-year-old girls were employed in producing exquisitely detailed works in embroidery. The arrogance is evidently yours, not this lecturer's. Seeing such young children outperform accomplished adult musicians or other artists is
surely too humbling for some parents.

@@mockingbird3099 Francesca is right. The idea of children working on the details is ridiculous and baseless.
