Our stories occur somewhere, and designing that somewhere can be just as interesting as designing a character. Rather than just needing to facilitate the story, here’s how Tomm Moore uses his background design to impart a subtext into his stories.

This a brilliant and informative video. Thank you for taking the time to research and understand the subject of background design in animation. Moore is an influencer in this business because of his absolute devotion to his craft. How can you not love his films?
I hope one day Tomm Moore will get an oscar for best animated feature. His studio really deserves it.
The Breadwinner was robbed
We get it, academy; Coco is really good, but you don’t need to keep friggin sucking them off
This isn’t too relevant but I’d like to remind everyone that Boss Baby was nominated for an oscar.
Seriously, the oscars for animated films are a joke.
'The Secret of Kells' got an Oscar nomination back in 2010
Wolfwalkers is getting a lot of Oscar buzz, hopefully it will be his year :)
@@MundoJuanci I wish, but Pixar takes the award 99% of the time and people are calling Soul one of their best movies so far :/ Klaus and I Lost My Body lost to Toy Story 4 last year so I’m afraid to get my hopes up
Hell yea! Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea are both such unappreciated animated gems. Moore is a true aspired talent in the industry, it's awesome others have started to appreciate his work.
I completely agree, Cartoon Saloon have created incredible shorts and features! For an independent studio, they are a true inspiration.
Any-Mation Dare I say the next Disney with the consistent hits they’ve had; The Breadwinner was especially excellent. Unreal how disregarded that movie was last year. In the future I’m hoping to make a video that covers how brilliantly woven and realized their storytelling is.
I would love to see that! It can be easy to be lost in the volume of CGI features I think. They're exceptionally well regarded in animation circles and in Ireland, and I'm glad to see there's been a rise in popularity for 2D cinema of later, especially in the Box Office. Movies like Liu Jian's Have a Nice Day, Nick Park's Early Man and Renner and Imbert's Le Grand Méchant Renard are performing well, and deservedly so!
I certainly can not wait for Moore’s next work, Wolfwalkers!
@@davidekstrand8544 Me Too, This one will actually make noise at the box office too, Good animators do good animation, Great animators pursue great animation..
Tomm Moore and Cartoon Saloon are the most criminally underrated animation worker and studio in the modern era and is a crime their work have been so much overlooked, so far I adore all the feature films the studio have done, Tomm More art style is a fest to the eyes.
Cartoon Saloon's work is stunning, absolutely
I remember when I was with my family in Ireland, where we were staying there was an event with Cartoon Saloon. We went in and there was some animators teaching the kids how to draw some of the characters from Song of the Sea. When the classes had finished, I went up to the animators and just started having a chat with them. Very very nice people and you really admire the effort and passion it takes to makes these films
what i take away from this is that the transition to live action/realism is actually (for lack of better words) dumbing down stories, removing the abstraction that is so necessary to fully tell a story
I’m disappointed that you don’t get more attention and fame. Your videos are amazing and you cover such a variety of subjects in animation that I get dizzy thinking about it. Keep on chugging
Thank you very much, I'm chugging away! And to be fair it took me a while to get through what I wanted to say haha
I agree that Moore's studio is amazing, with "not one frame wasted."
Holy mother of... I am so close to speechless over this amazing video!
While I am highly appreciative of richly detailed, realistic backgrounds, this video really communicates why I adore animation so much more than the realism of live-action in general: By submitting absolutely to the actual forms of the world around you, I think you truly do relinquish the endless possibilities for infusing every inch of what you display with deliberate design, style and symbolism.
Having seen some of the beautiful compositons in your video, I wonder if you’re a fan Art Nouveau paintings, post cards and such?
Thank you so much, design is so import in approach, especially its deconstruction and symbolism. I agree its a rich world. Yes I really love Art Nouveau, especially Jim Fitzpatrick's Celtic Work
Yessss I'm so excited to see someone talking about Tomm Moore's work (and even more excited to hear it in a familiar accent) Cheers. Can't tell you how many times I've told someone to watch Song of the Sea. Saw it in the cinema when it came out and wanted a postcard version of every frame.
Wonderful! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I didn't think my accent was that strong :)
It is ;)
@@Any-mation I am Spanish, his accent is deep but light to listen.
I remember when i was a lil kid in primary school and tom moore brought song of the sea into our school and we got to watch it before it was released, 99% of the movie at the time was storyboards and I have no clue why they made a class full of kids with 0 attention span watch it but the first part we got to see that was fully animated, fully colored, was the scene with bronagh- the entire classroom gasped in astonishment because it was simply beautiful...
All the color, attention to detail, just EVERYTHING, even as a kid i knew this was an incredible feat to create and animate. Whenever I think back on the movie I still vividly remember the colors used in the scene, the rocks, the water, the way the white hair sprawled out across the cave, even if i dont remember what exactly happens in it.
When I was scrolling the internet a few years after I had left that school, I found song of the sea online and i purchased it and watched it and WOW. Its definitely one of my most favorite films ever.
It is so hard to convey how beautiful I think it is especially considering how I got to watch it turn from this unfinished, storyboard animatic to this fully fledged movie with hours upon hours of work and love clearly poured into it, and I'm glad youtubers are picking up on it and making videos and reviewing it- i hope it gains more recognition in the coming years, as it really truly deserves it and as an irish person i can proudly say we have some amazing talent here
song of the sea is a masterpiece, one of the best movies ever created
I figured out that when it's truly dangerous the perspective is realistic! In song of the sea the whole time the Background is so relaxed and looks like children's book until Ben crosses the street and cars are almost hit him. storytelling on these films are awesome they show instead of telling
You pointed out a lot of my favorite things about Moore's work that I couldn't exactly put a finger on. This was beautifully done!
Thank you very much J
Totally agree!!!
I have been watching videos in English converted to Spanish with sub, it is very difficult, but I appreciate the effort Cartoon Saloon.
I honestly dont know why anyone would dislike this video.
It took a while for someone to dislike it :)
I love how they explained their concept of art and what they are trying tootell the world with it
Modern day philosophy
I saw the secret of Kells when I was little, and it's influenced the worlds that I imagine in my head greatly. For the longest time, I've had images from that film engrained in my mind, and I haven't been able to remember what they were from, or if they were even from a movie at all. The wolf girl's large unblinking eyes staring directly at the audience; giving both an uneasy/chilling, yet comforting feeling all at once. A boy with red hair wandering through the forest. The sense of wonder and mystery that every frame exudes. I thought maybe I just dreamt the whole thing up 😂. Of course, I prefer a less abstract look for the worlds I come up with, but that same sense of magic and wonder, giving a light hearted tone through color and music rather than humor, and using the background as a fundamental aspect of the story remains stitched in all my stories. Thank you for reminding me of this wonderful gem of a movie.
Hey, thank you very much for your comment. I completely agree, there's a beautiful fascination present in the work of Cartoon Saloon.
I remember feeling the same way with The Secret of NIMH, Brutus and the owl could be something out of a nightmare
But one you grow to miss
Nice video! The flatness thing for me evokes some of my favorite environmental design in games. You can really control the tone of the "cinematography" in a game with no moving camera with evocative backgrounds and scene-dependent perspective.
How the F did I not know of these movies....I LOVE animation....
But I immediately ordered the Irish folklore box with all 3 movies....this looks absolutely gorgeous.
I like that the first reference image for "medieval art" was one of the many giant snail fights. When are we going to get a feature length animation based on all the giant damn snails that show up in medieval art!
you should check out the adventure time episode with the giant snail. not exactly on this same topic but very funny.
I seriously need to work on my backgrounds, I'm working on making a story, and I've been designing characters and plotting out plot points and put most of it on Instagram.
I have spent a lot of time learning to draw faces because I love these characters that I'm spending so much time with but I'm finding it very difficult to learn backgrounds and landscapes. This is something of a failure of mine because if this story is to do well the world needs to feel like it's own world and time, so thank you, this has helped.
Mate I've been watching a couple of your vids a day and they're really enlightening! I'm an animator myself and you're exposing the substrata of the medium that so many people, myself included, often overlook. Thank you so much for the time you put into these!
He's one of the few remaining directors who remembers, that film is a visual medium, emphasis on the "visual". That movies should use the "show and don't tell" more often, instead of being audiobooks with moving pictures attached.
Everything I have ever thought of Tomm's work and the beauty or 2D animation design is concentrated into this video. Hats off to you! Nice to see Adrien Merigeau mentioned also. I would love to see a breakdown of The Breadwinner and Nora's directional process. Films like Song of the Sea will stand the test of time and only enrich the medium of 2d Animation further as more people discover the complex beauty of it's visual story telling. You have a subscriber in me!
This is so GOOD! Great work!
This is the kind of content (of course, the animated films of Tomm Moore, but in this case I am referring to the UA-cam video) I hope the world starts to more fully appreciate. There is a LOT of garbage out there so this was a refreshing change of pace @Any-Mation
This felt like a short film, before I realized it was an educational video!
Amazing work :)
Thank you very much, the credit here has to go to Bruno Coulais’ beautiful song at the start, it lulls me in every time :)
Thank you!!!!!! This week I fell in love with Tomms work. Right after a visit to Kells and Kilkenny. I never heard of him before. Now I am so happy this man exists. His work is touching, fascinating and a magical kind of "mana for the soul". Outstanding.
And your video sets some light on further perspectives. Well done!!!!
Greetings from Germany.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate that! I hope you enjoyed your trip to Kells and Kilkenny!
1000th Like. But on a more serious note, I really enjoyed this video... I know it is quite old, but I had never heard of this animator before, so thanks for making this video. It was really good and I learnt a lot and fell like really exploring this animator in more detail. I really liked what you said about how if we only focus on getting a character from a --> b we may as well write a book... I thought it was very insightful.
Wow, thank you very much, I appreciate your comment :) I hope you do look at Cartoon Saloon's work, its phenomenal in regards to 2D Animation.
Yes, its a visual medium, I definitely feel we should explore the visuals as much as we can to reinforce the story! Thank you
Here a list of Cartoon Saloon filmography:

I consider Tomm Moore to be a master animator of Ireland when it comes to background art and 2D animation in general. The world at large will soon be discovering just how much of an artistic genius he truly is 😁
Best analysis ever! Is there a possibility to get the written script of this video?
I do put them on my Patreon
The Secret of Kells and Wolfwalkers are my favorite Cartoon Saloon movies. Can't wait to see what else they have in store. 🍀🐺
I love Tom Moore's work, and Cartoon Saloon. Very good thoughtful and interesting breakdown and explanation. Well done, love it!
One day, I want to make beautiful art. I want to bring something into this world that tells something new. Another perspective.
I like the idea of studying other’s art to create a new world.
wow not sure how i missed this dude, looking forward to watching his films they look awesome
Get in on Cartoon Saloon, their work is incredible, genuinely!
I know your channel only has three videos as of right now, but it's way underrated. Subscribed and I hope for more, your work is amazing!
Nice to see someone else who appreciates Tomm Moore's work as much as me. Keep up the the great work.
Whenever I watch the Secret of Kells or song of the sea I just think "this is what animation is for". Tom Moore pushes every boundary of what animation can be.
This whole video is just a love letter to backgrounds and backgrounds artists
AND I SUPPORT THAT!
Omg! Can someone makes timestamps for this video? So many cute films! I need to watch all of them!
I hope this helps :)

Cole, your videos are like a breath of fresh air for me. I'm into animation for about a year. And during the last month, I felt absolutely lost in this infinite ocean. I was looking for inspiration. Your videos are the beacon of the realm of animation. Thank you!
Wow, that's a really lovely thing to say, thank you so much. Your animation is great, keep paddling in that ocean please :)
@@Any-mation Thank you, Cole, and good luck with all your future projects!
Amazing video, and an even more amazing artist. Thanks for the informative video! As an inspiring artist myself, I can appreciate these point of views that I might think about during my creations.
are you going to update this video / make a sequel since Wolfwalkers is now out?
Holy cow, this video is amazing!!! I cannot believe that I forgot about these two movies for awhile! I must see them again! They're so good!!!! I really loved everything you said! And I loved what the director said In that clip about 2D being experimental ect!!!! SO TRUE!!!!!! this is why we NEED more 2d like this!!!!!!!
Couldn't agree more
I really love your video essays as they get me to think how can I capture an audience. I hope to see more of your work it's quite inspiring.
Thank you very much for your kind words 🙏🏻 I will hopefully have my next essay ready within the next month
Tomm Moore is a god.
Honestly.
Yeah he is.
@Sherri T[A]P Me!! To Have [S]EX With Me Yes! I agree! Animation can do things live action and cg can't.
Well that was so precious, inspiring and good to watch!! Thank you!
Thank you!
Yes!
So beautiful!
This is such a wonderful video and its wonderful to see this kind of intellectual analysis of Tomm Moore and keep up the great work i cant wait to see the next video !
I love Kubo! I am so glad you included clips from it!
Some incredibly beautiful animation. Thank you for this video.
thank you for putting into words what many of us know so deep in their heart :)
Thanks for sharing! That studio makes such wonderful animations.
Stunningly beautiful
Brilliant work buddy :)
Dang, you're killin it with these, Cole!!! Such a great vid. Couldn't agree more.
Wow, thank you very much :)
Just watched an old short by Cartoon Saloon called "Old Fang". Pretty rad.
Awesome! They have so many. Somewhere Down the Line is great, as well as any of Nora Twomey's early work!
What’s the name of this animated film 0:41
Hard to catch but says "the wonderful short "adam and dog" I believe
The thief and the cobbler is one of my favorite "underground" films. It seems to be a basic Aladdin rip-off, (released about the same time?!? Not sure) but the art style is so unique. And some of the songs are quite catchy. Also, cannot fault a film for using Vincent Price as a voice actor!
If you're interested, I think checking out the making of Thief might really interest you: ua-cam.com/video/Uv33FDnRkn0/v-deo.html
That movie began production in the 1960s before the idea of Disney's Aladdin even existed.
wow almost 1k like without even 1 dislike , you should have at least 100k subscribers , i really mean it .
I hope this doesn't jinx it haha! And thank you very much :)
...enlightening !
Such a great video! Thanks for sharing these insights into the importance of background design narratively.
Amazing stuff you got here!, i will check at least every single one of your videos twice
Who else is here after watching Wolfwalkers?
what is the animation with the dog near the beginning of the video..?
Adam and Dog my man
Watched it! So interesting! 👍👏
just subscribed...loved your work... highly impressed... keep making such wonderful videos... Good luck
Thank you very much
I just found this amazing video, may I know the name of animation in minute 1:35 ? Very smooth and classy.
I always loved 2D animation/classic animation more than 3D, because it is true art made by talented artists
The Thief and The Cobbler, Richard William's unfinished masterpiece of traditional animation
@@Any-mation thank you 😊
Brilliant.
They are
Your work is amazing I hope you make more
Me too :)
@Any-Mation I’d like to suggest a video on Made in Abyss, or maybe one on Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. I think a lot of the fans and creators of that show would appreciate it in the wake of what happened. Good luck with everything sir you do good work.
@@nobodyspecial9097 Thank you very much! Neither are on my radar at the moment, but I'll definitely have a look :)
These are so awesome! Thank you very much :)
If you are interested in the type of art style that Secret of Kells and the Song of the Sea has, I highly recommend you to check out the works of Marcell Jankovics (also works with Kecskemétfilm in Hungary)
Wow, thank you very much! I certainly will check out his work!
What film is at 0:50 with the dog and the mammoth?
It's Minkyu Lee's Adam and Dog. Its an incredibly atmospheric short film!
Wow, what a great video! Very smart and interesting analysis with lovely examples. Indeed it's a nice thing to see that others are so fond of Tomm Moore's works as well... Thank you Cole. And does anyone know where I can find the music that is used for the credits?
Thank you so very much! The song is called 'Cardinal Knowledge' performed by Kíla (ua-cam.com/video/OOYrI0vCSoE/v-deo.html) It's a gorgeous song
Thans! It already sounded so familiar ;)
What's the animation in 3.37?
Loved the video!
6:45 what's the name of this movie (I couldn't quite understand what you said there)?
Amira the film he mentions is the thief and the cobbler directed by richard williams :))
7:50 which film is this or short?
Wolfwalkers, it hasn't been released yet
thats to much for me today amazing!
Thank you :) tomorrow's a new day haha
through my reading of the modern youtube comments i realized that the word 'expert' had vanished and replaced with the word 'god' this great majestic precious word had been so ridiculed that anyone who does something very well, people would call him a god, such a shame what humanity had reached :-/
qual nome desse anime 2:13 ?
works cited??? subbed.
Aaaw yeah secret of kells
What is the clip that starts at 7:50 from?
It's called WolfWalkers it coming out this autumn it'll be available on Apple TV I think not sure where else
Kim Blackbeak thank you so much! I’ll look out for that. Love this style of film and Tomm Moore’s works.
What’s playing at 1:41?
The music of the beginning is The mother’s portrait ua-cam.com/video/VgYAJo5e87g/v-deo.html
for the sequels prequels and tv series of wolfwalkers.
samurai jack does this very well.
What's the name of the animation in min 6.43? :) thank you!
It’s The Thief and the Cobbler, Richard Williams unfinished masterpiece 🙏🏻
Hey! Books could be visual, too.
Ever thought of doing a video on Chuck Jones?
I actually never have, I always thought Tony and Taylor's work summed Chuck up perfectly: ua-cam.com/video/kHpXle4NqWI/v-deo.html
Any-Mation I have seen that. But he doesn’t talk specifically about his televised animated retellings of Kipling’s Jungle Books: Mowgli’s Brothers, The White Seal, and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. I find them all excellent!
I may have asked this a while back. Have you ever thought of doing a video on Don Bluth?
You know, Bluth is particularly important to the Irish Animation industry. He's definitely someone I'm interested in, but a little ways down the list yet :) I try to marry directors with a specific lens to research them through, and so nothing's out of the question!
Any-Mation I see what you mean. It’s like a specific aire of big music composers for movies, like John Williams and his brass, Randy Newman and his jazz, James Horner and his Celtic woodwinds and strings, etc.
At 3:15 what is this from?
Bro, u make great vids 4 real
what animation is that around 7:50?
It's from the trailer of wolf walkers. The movie hasn't been made yet
Can I ask what movie 0:23 came from? I can't remember the title but I know i've already watched it
Of course, it’s the Garden of Words by Makoto Shinkai
Ohmy thank you! :))
can anyone add subtitle for this, please?
irish animation
Hahaha wow no dislikes
Yet hahaha
Isn’t he brilliant??
"Nor to pay attention to false stories and to genealogies. Such things end up in nothing useful but merely give rise to speculations rather than providing anything from God in connection with faith."(1 Timothy 1:4) "There should not be found in you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, anyone who employs divination, anyone practicing magic, anyone who looks for omens, a sorcerer, anyone binding others with a spell, anyone who consults a spirit medium or a fortune-teller, or anyone who inquires of the dead. For whoever does these things is detestable to Jehovah, and on account of these detestable practices Jehovah your God is driving them away from before you".( Deuteronomy 18:10-12) These two bible principles are the only things that I have to say about Tomm Moore.
People who say animation isn't art and only children can enjoy it cannot draw, scientific fact.
