      He went through like 8 cans, 4 different sand papers, a buffer and 2 bottles of compound. This costs well over $100 for this tiny gas tank. Poor prep work didn't help. I seriously doubt that gas tank would have cost more than $200 to have professionally painted.

    • @Turbo329
      @Turbo329 5 років тому +4

      @@tarstarkusz I was thinking the same thing. You're better off buying a gallon of your favorite color from TCP Global or some other company and spraying it with a cheap harbor freight gun and compressor in your back yard. Especially if you're doing a whole sport bike.

    Hears a tip for you, I've done lots of spraying from cans and I always put the cans in a bowl stood up filled with hot water and leave in the hot water for 10 minutes, then shake the can well and your paint will go on far better and smoother. Try it some time and you will get the finish you want.

      @@iangandy005 always make sure your surface presentation is really good and build the coats up slowly and evenly slet each coat dry for around 10 minutes, and don't put heavy coats on. Thanks for taking me through the whole process. It helped reaffirm the approach that I’ve taking on a year-long project. I’ve been battling with using automotive finishing products on an old acoustic guitar. It’s far from the traditional nitrocellulose lacquer approach, but the soundboard and headstock face are pretty beat up, so it’s been one long experiment. I’m using products available in 2023. My main issues seem to be incompatibilities between various compounds. I’m about ready start wet sanding and buffing the layers of clear coat (SprayMax 2K Clear Gloss) I put on a few days ago. It’ll be a first for me, and I really need to get it right the first time. Watching you persevere has helped me to adopt a better mindset as I press on. Gorgeous bike, by the way.

    You need to spray closer to the tank, not mist the tank, this will cause it to be milky. The spitting is due to the nozzle pin hole getting clogged with clear before you spray you need to use a needle to clean it out.. This will save you a bunch of time wet sanding.

    This is a great-non boring tutorial. I've been in the process of painting some Realistic Minimus 7 speakers (aluminum). I started with a few coats of XO Rust and after I ran out of that, Rust Oleum. I,'ve been sanding and fixing the flaws and I just ordered a pack of 409 - 4000 grit sandpaper from Wal-Mart. Now, I guess I'm going to be doing more sanding to get these baby's to shine better than new money.
    Damn perfectionist!!

    Thanks, that was very helpful. I’m painting custom bags and was concerned about that little bit of texture on the base coat (also black). So it seems the key is, after applying multiple coats of clear coat, let it cure and then do as many iterations is necessary wet sanding, rubbing compound and then working up to final polishing. I really appreciate the video, thanks.

    you wait 3 to 7 days for the spray paint to cure before applying a clear coat? Just because it's dry doesn't mean it's cured. Waiting avoids unnecessary blistering later on. a clear coat added before the paint cures means that the chemicals that are released from the paint during the curing stage are trapped under the clear.

    • @Speedytrip
      @Speedytrip 3 роки тому +3

      Depends on the paint and clear coat, sometimes you need to clear withing 24-48h of painting for the clear coat to merge with the paint.

    Man i know this video 5 years ago but I watched plenty of spray painting videos and this was the best for me cause the mistakes and the whole process like I thought I could paint in one day and look fantastic. That was a lie. I skipped primer or half ass sanded it and went through the horrible process of working harder cause if your primer is silky smooth then you can finish better and sooner. I couldn't figure out why mine came out ok and not awesome like yours, well it was blotchy with the shine, I thought even if bad spots in primer it's ok paint over it and sand and if you don't even the primer then it'll never look awesome until you do the first coat like it is your final. Im gonna paint my motorcycle again and then we'll see maybe my car again, that's a whole other issue lol. Thank you for keeping it 💯 honest

    Its 25dollars a can but its real 2k
    Urethane clear...still need to put it on heavier around gas fill neck to be sure it seals so fuel does creep between. Clear and filler neck.

      Good advice. I hate to see him put so much work into a rattle can job that's going to get eaten off with the first drop of gas that hits it. Still, his technique is not bad for smaller parts.
      Even with rattle can, you can flow coat if you are careful, would save a lot of light coat and sanding cycles.

Then wet sand again 1000g, and lay on 5-6 light coats black. Hopefully I can clearcoat at that point. Wet sand with 2000g and buff. What do you think of Duplicolor products ?

    Always spray in a warm room with ventilation if in doors or in a garage. If spraying out doors in warm conditions make sure there Is no wind, the warm conditions will dry the paint better an never spray to close to the object your spraying as you will get runs in the paint , I recommend about 8 to 10 inches away from the object your spraying. Warm the paint up first by putting the can I a bowl of hot water for 10 minutes, then shake the can for a couple of minutes.

I'm gonna paint my 86 FXR tank and rear fender this weekend and wanted to see how you did it. I'm on the same page except I rush things a bit. you sanded much more than I. I used alot of paint, sanded with 1000 on an orbital sander then wet sanded with 1500. buffed and waxed. I'm gonna be a little more patient this time and see if I can end up with a flawless tank. thanks bro

    Always overlap your spray 50 % . Don't put your rattle can in HOT water , it can explose while shaking it .(warm water o.k ) Put plastic above and around your object to keep dust away . Final wetsand with 2000 or 3000 before buffing (not 1000 like in this film)
    That's what i learnd the last 3 months from all my mistakes restoring the clear coat on my 1990 MIATA .( The can in hot water did not hapen to me , but my neigbour last year 🥴 )

    Im not sure if this has been mentioned but a spray can of polyurithane is actually the best finish ive found. its gas resistant and dries texture free... dries just like the wood furniture does... nice and wet and deep looking... found at walmart... ive painted mt tank and fenders and have used many clears... the poly was the best for me so far!!

      Agree. I'm very impressed on the durability of Poly on my bike.

      Do you still sand and buff the same way to finish it?

      No buffing required on my motorcycle. The paint was nice and smoothe due to multi coats of paint with wet sanding between coats. Once the paint was correct the poly was applied. Turned out great and the poly stands up to gas with no issues. Gas just wipes off. Great stuff.

      Thanks for the tip, I'm definitely going to try this.There are several Minwax spray poly glosses. I'm assuming Minwax Helmsman Clear Gloss. Would this be the one you used?

    I have to admit I was a little skeptical of the video. But I have to admit you defiantly put in the time and effort to make it look great. I just need to know if I can spray on over the clear coat. I'm doing something pretty long for a project but. What I'm doing needs a nice shinny color under the last thing I'm using.

    i am painting and clear coating bike parts and this was extremely helpful. it is my first time painting and using spray cans. colorite is the brand. they sent me a base and a color which had special spray nozzles. but the clear they sent had the same old piece of krap nozzle were all use to and it went on badly. it is stupid to send a krappy spray can like that with two good cans.

    Good job i have done a car like this turned out ok the 3m sandpaper kit i think it has 600 through 2000 grit i usually buy that one because your going to use all of them and still have some left for later projects
