- IKEA is attempting to lower the price of smart lighting with its TRÅDFRI range. But does smart lighting and home automation need to be expensive to work properly? Let's find out!

"Trådfri" means wireless, just in case anyone cares.
Ah! That makes sense!
Fri = free (in English)? Just curious!
@@JoelJosephReji So this got me curious. According to Google Translate Tråd means wire and Fri means free! Also it looks like I was pronouncing it almost right but not quite, the å isn't like the English a.
Skratta du forlarar du
@@GaryExplains Fri means free (Like basically I'm free), not like this phone is free. Tråd is just wire
This is the closest way to pronounce it for those who dont speak any scandinavian language - trodfree
thanks matey
Trawdfree
Can I just say, this video was literally perfect. very friendly vibe, amazing studio and explained it perfectly! I was so confused before this video! I appreciate you!
My entire house is TRÅDFRI, lights and plugs.
It's so good.
Wait what how? No electricity? (Haha get it cause trådfri means wireless) (okay that was a bad joke sorry)
Except when suddenly lights Arent responding to the app or some of the bulbs are greyed out etc and you cant control them for some reason.. No trouble shooting.. Just.. Remove and start over.. Which is annoying af when you have 7.. But when it works, its super cool
Maybe this could be the future of household lighting good job gary
When you have enabled the device with your phone (then added to google home) do you still need the original switch?
Gary, Thank you very much, your instruction is very helpful, your explained so well, I watched a couple of other youtube, your is best.
Hi Gary. Very informative video. Question: Can the steering the device still work after I've paired a bulb with the bulb/Google ?
You should do an update on this. The system has had a few (firmware) upgrades since this video was released, and is actually a pretty decent alternative to the more complicated (expensive) smart light systems. The "buffering" is probably due to the fact that it uses the ZigBee protocol, wich is pretty slow/high latency (actually the same protocol as that big brand that everyone else uses).
I too had some trouble "finding" the hub. But I easily connected all my devices to one switch. The manual says 10 devices per switch.
Hm, could you sync the montion sensor with the mains plug?
Hi Gary! Trådfri is pronounced Trodfri, and the comment by another person saying it translates as "Wireless" is correct 👏. IKEA (pronounced i-key-a not eye-key-a by the way, if you ever hear an IKEA advert they always say it as it should be pronounced, i-key-a.) Great review and set up video, really enjoyed it... You can wave your arms around as much as you like Gary, we humans don't have the power of flight! 😊👏👍
Nice video! Thank you :)
Is it possible to put lights into different groups in HomeKit or the app even though they are all connected to the same remote?
So we can add multiple devices to a single steering device [remote]?
Good review. Maybe you want to add Home Assistant to your setup. This can hub every smart device in your home :)
It worked you are a life saver 😂❤️❤️
Thanks Gary !!!
Really helpful! Thank you! Would it work to reconnect the same remote to several devices and add them all to Google home (using only one remote control)?
Using remote is a deal breaker for me i will look for a unit that uses hub only to control with homekit. I'm leaning towards aqura.
I use TP-LINK smart plugs and bulbs, one of the first on the market but dont require a hub but do cost more money. The software used to control them is very nice though.
you are my favorite UA-camr right now
thanks
@@bonniedean9495 you still admire it?
BBA BALDER what the heck dude, my girlfriend just read the notification and she cant stop laughing😂😂😂😂😂
I don't think that buffering / confusion is intentional so you don't keep the lights turning on / off which may damage it
If one switcher hooked up with two or more light bulbs, could the app control each individual light bulb ?
yes, i have 3 remotes and 9 bulbs but the app can control individual bulbs
I have smart light from IKEA and start blinking but I couldn’t fix it , please advise
So you really need the remote to connect the lights to the hub?
It's interesting as I've set up some IKEA lights with a Conbee stick (and a Raspberry Pi) without needing the remote.
Does it work with Apple Home Kit and Siri though?
Instead, I got a bunch of Gosund wall outlets that don't require a hub and they each cost $9. They still work with Google Assistant. I wired them to the lights and hid them behind the switchboard.
Gosund looks interesting, alas it seems you can't get them in Europe.
Love my Gosund outlets and wall switches and control them with my smartphone from anywhere. Recently also got a Lux Kono thermostat ($96 at Walmart) so I can control my heat and air conditioning from anywhere.
You did a good job at pronouncing it - the best way to say it for you would be "Troadfree"
Trawdfree would be closer!
Interesting!
can I set timer?
Hey Gary I think*(6:57) it's not getting confused but programmed that way . I wouldn't expect it to be good for the electronics to be turned on and off rapidly.
That is certainly a positive spin on the idea! But knowing the small capacities of the electronics that go into these things, I still suspect overload!

I've got 7 of this lights and I love them, I only have 1 remote but I bought a Google Home Mini and control them with it. Now I'm waiting for their controlled blinds to hit the stores: Kadrij and Fyrtur (blackout).
That is good to know, thanks for sharing. How do you do the pairing with just one remote. One by one using the same remote each time? Do the lights come on individually?
@@GaryExplainsYes, I pair them one by one and they all turn on at the same time but I rarely use it.
BTW, thanks for turning on my lights 😂😂 because of "Hey Google"
Philips hue ? Good or Bad ?
I'd buy it, if it wasn't so fiddly. The point of this was to make things easier for you, but it doesn't seem to do that very well.
Takes max 5 min to set it up. It looks like a lot because he tested out multiple products, and demonstrated it as he went on.
It is easy and it works with Google Home etc. I tell my phone to turn on and off the light, to which % etc
Gary, you can connect one remote to several devices and you can also use several remotes to control one light, but for that you need to use an app called Hue Essentials. This app also allows you to use Tasker to automate your lights.
If you have any questions let me know, I'd be happy to help. You can also go to r/tradfri and learn a lot there.
Titus hello,
Can you use one remote to control muiltiple bulbs in the same room Separately? Say if I was relaxing in my living room and decided that I wanted to turn off the main ceiling light and turn on a reading lamp.
I do not think he read the manuals unfortunately. Just saying since there is an Ikea video with that first small remote and the person turns it on the table to switch the light on/off and Mr. Gary did not seem to know this.
I would like to ask which one of these setups are useful for automatically turning the bulb off/on when going to sleep and waking up? Thanks for any info.
Can you use it only by phone and not buy any controller?
Once you have it configured you can use it just with your phone, but you need to buy the controller/remote for the initial setup. As I mention in the video, I think the gateway clones the remote, which means you need a remote to clone!
there is a search icon; you don't have to scroll through all items ;-)
These are brilliant when linked to Alexa or Google assistant
Here is the first one of the three extra vowels in Swedish (they come in the end of the alphabet by the way, in this order: å, ä, ö). The challenge is to really distinguish them as separate vowels, and not just muddled versions of A and O. The Å can be thought of as the ‘au’ sound in (British accent) ‘Paul’. Indeed, some Swedish Pauls actually spell their names Pål. The sound is long, as in a long ‘Pååål’, or ‘poor’.
and you say "fri" as "free"
Is your phone xz3 or Note 8?
Note 8.
Flicking the switch on and of resets the bulb
Lmao Yeelight has been out for years and you don't need a gateway. How much for a colour bulb? 20USD.
And it works with Google Assistant.
Just got Blitzwolf colour LED strip again for 20USD, again works with Google assistant.
Remote worked for a year. Replaced battery. Now remote only works without rear cover installed... Makes ZERO sense. It appears that the cover is pressing the "pair" button. ????
I coded small script for my linux router to control the light gateway. Now when I come in with my phone wlan connected it will trun on the lights. :P
That's pretty cool! What router do you use?
@@anon5119 just a debian linux on small pc
A very complicated process to work
You can type in Tradfri instead of stolling down to the Ts.
I feel like the Ikea warm white colour isn't quite right. Seems different to other warm whites. More of a peachy white.
I imagine “trawd free” would be somewhat similar to trådfri.
Close :-)
Hope these can be hacked to work with Home Assistant sometime soon. Ideally running something like Tasmota on the bulb
No need for that. It is already supported:
www.home-assistant.io/integrations/tradfri/
I bought IKEA cabinets with inside and undermount lighting. The remote has never worked. No one at IKEA can tell me why. They don't have anyone at customer service, nor the sales people know how to help. Very frustrating. Apparently they only sell stuff but dont know how anything works. I was able to pair the remote but nothing else works.👎
Why test $25 per bulb when there are wyze and others bulbs for $8 ?
Because it is IKEA. I thought that would be obvious.
as a hue user, i've gotta say this setup process is so much harder
i have one myself, it literally takes 5 seconds
Have you tried Xiaomi led bulbs? No need for hubs, they just directly connect to Google Home/Alexa.
With Eufy lightbulbs you do NOT need a hub, nor do you need a remote control. You merely use your smartphone...and you can connect to Google Assistant. Also...VERY affordable. the "tunable" form has the brightness level, as well as the temperature/color control and you can schedule it, operate with your voice, etc. If you're using Android, just install an app and connect it to the Google Home...from there you can even use your Chromebox to operate the bulbs. No hubs, no remotes and only about $15 US
They look quite good as well. If this video does well then I might do a follow up about alternates including Eufy.
@@GaryExplains I've been using my first purchased pair since February 6, 2018 without any issues. I've since added a third - all in the same room - and again, no issues. It's quite fun to update the firmware of a lightbulb lol I've also given one to my son as a gift. He at first wasn't sure he'd need/want it, but he loves it. I have yet to try their smart outlet. Eufy is owned by Anker, which is another reason I went with them.
One more thing, I think the coolest use of these just might be adding them to your alarm clock with the Google Assistant Routines. It's kinda nice to wake up to news and weather and lighting come on in the other end of the house as you sort of warm up to the world.
Do every bulb require a separate ip-Adress?
That is to me the biggest issue with hub-free smart bulbs.
I think Lifx managed to bypass this by making the first bulb a controller for new lights. But they're VERY expensive.
@@andreasb4kken The app handles all that in the setup process and IP addresses are automatically assigned. It's a fairly smooth, easy process. So to me it's not big deal.
it (tradfri) is integrated wit xiaomi's ecosystem which believe it or not is bigger than apple , amazon and google. pretty much double the size of amazon
Amazon revenue: US$177.866 billion Xiaomi revenue: US$21.5 billion Not sure if those terms are which you are measuring by.
@@vecamiolo internet of things is the metric and net shipment of xiaomi iot devices is what the size refers to

C'mon man. Never use the hotwords.

Nice video tough ;-)
You can obtain the correct pronunciation by pasting the word into Google Translate and pressing the speaker icon.
Thanks, but when I made this video 5 years ago, Google Translate wasn't as sophisticated as it is today, especially when it came to pronunciation. 👍
You can tap the search icon in the upper-right corner of google home app, why scrolling down five minutes? And please, stop saying hey google, you messed up all the lights in my home :)
Read it like o tro... etc
bröther....I want some lämp
"Trådfri" ... "Tråd" means thread or wire and "fri" means free.
It is pronounced as 'troadfree'.
I am not Swedish, I just live here :)

As someone who is learning danish, trad-fry made me legit laugh
This video is definitely proved to me I bought the best system Philips Hue without a doubt, Philips Hue is very expensive it works very well and is a much better idea than this, this proves to do get what you pay for in life...
why 360p ?
LOL, because you are very earlier and UA-cam is still processing the video. It will appear in higher resolutions over the next few minutes.
there are people that still don't understand this?
Are you from 2008?
I see it in 1080p now
Do you really have to keep saying "Ok Google" in these videos 🤦♂️ most people edit that out
you can just type IKEA in google home instead of scrolling forever
15th comment
Why would they make people buy remotes. Seems stupid
Hello Dr. Gary! Can you make a video to explain is it possible to spy smartphone users by OEM, like FBI charged to HUAWEI? If it possible, how can we detect those behavior? Can't Android system detect that?
pretty weak
Use Google Translate to find out how to pronounce foreign words!
LOL, you mean like the differences between British English and American English!!! 😂
