- Опубліковано 19 лют 2021
- Found this 1978 Columbia Commuter Moped on Facebook Marketplace for only $90. Jen and I split in on it with the plan to flip it for a profit however after a few cruises we have decided keep her around. The intro vocal is reference to Janis Joplins song, "Mercedes-Benz".`

I always watch your videos and I can't believe I didn't see this video earlier, but I had the exact same moped when I was 13yrs old. My father bought me that moped brand new and will never forget it. I have never seen other one like it in 30 yrs.!!!!
Right on!
I love when you include Jen in your videos. Best of both worlds- great mech tech from you and humor and smiles from Jen. Oh, and great singing!
My old man used to ride to work at 6.30am every morning on his (maxi puch - same thing) for so many years .. and i learned to ride it at a non-legal age.. first motorbiking experience...even after so many sportsbikes, commuters, cruisers, trials, track bikes ... this brings back memories of peddling/riding this thing and the sheer simplicity and joy of biking and freedom, for the first time...I regret not saving it as it rotted away in the old shed in the following years.. better to have loved than never loved at all!
I worked for a bicycle shop in Massachusetts when I was in High School and we sold Columbia Mo peds. I bought one new 79 or 80 and put a lot of miles on it. That one is in great condition. I'm sorta new to your channels and it's fun watching the older videos too.
That looks like someone sat down, examined my 1978 Puch Maxi Luxe, and designed a moped, at least in terms of frame design. Which is smart, as that was a great, comfortable moped, that took the bashing of two teenagers and never stopped. Very nice - I like it. Enjoy! Now you need another so you can ride together.
"Are we gonna die?" "Yeah, let's go ride!" Hilarious!
Brings back some memories. I had 8 mopeds at one time when I was a teenager in the mid 90s. Nobody wanted them. A lot of good times. Your moped looks like a Puch moped. Very similar.
Rode one exactly like that growing up many of miles ! The transmission is actually a two speed . It starts in low and actually shifts into high . Great little bike !
Jen crushing the Miller Lite 🍺 👍🏻
.40 seconds into the video, I absolutely agree! She is a real cutie! and she has a really great moped!
Weirdo
@@tangyorange6509 why would you say that?
Love the “is it safe” … “No” lol
This little thing brings back memories of my childhood. My father and mother had each one. With them we traveled to my grandmother, from mother's side, who lived 43 miles away from us.
You get a thumbs up for the singing :)
Holy clean bike! Port and polish! Nooners through the city!🤪
Cool, I had vélo soles in France when I was young. Same concept.
These things sell for 700-1200 on craigslist when they run and are clean. You are a god for finding this for 90 bucks.
Yeah, was definitely an unbeatable deal! Happened to be on the way home from where I was coming from as well so I didn't even have to make a special trip to go get it
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow I guess I need to make a "fake" Facebook
Awesome. In Poland suche a bike is called 'Komar '. It was very popular in 70 '. Greetings from Poland.
I watched this a year ago and now have two ‘77 and a ‘78 Commuter in the garage along with a ‘78 Montgomery Wards “easy-rider” moped. Such a neat hobby, have just as much fun as the big bikes ❤😊
Jen is lovely and has a lovely voice. Love the videos. Keep them going.
That moped looks like you will have some fun with it! I think you need to keep looking for another one like that so that you two can go on a moped trip.
Yeah definitely a blast to ride. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for another one. This one will be fun to bring camping as well though
We all are gonna need something like this if it keeps going the way it is with fuel! Cool little scoot!
That is one sweet little rider. Jen should fall in love with it. Chris has a way of enjoying all motorized vehicles.
Great find.
Sweet little bike guys, How cool is Jen just havin a crack at it
My father used to sell them part time back in the late 70s. We had a couple and me and my brother rode them all over the countryside and towns. Good times.
I would love to own one for door dashing. Do u any for sale
We call that a Mofa (for German MOtorFAhrrad). In the 1980th almost every Teenager got that. You was allowed to drive at 15yo, without any license, what means a lot here. Today you have to get a small license, only theory learnings, but with examination. Now scooters like Vespa are more popular for the kids.
Your lady has a wonderful singing voice
Hee hee Janis would love this I had a little drink with her in July 1969 !
I had this exact moped when I was a kid.
Wife: "are we gona die?"
"Yeah let's go ride!"
xD epic hahaha, what a great content!
Lol! Thanks man
Jen made the video totally worth it lol Nice moped Jen!!
Good job Jennifer, as many women seem to have a fear of getting dirty, but having your 'expert' along, you can feel confident that the end result will be a positive one! I've fully rebuilt a couple of V8's over the years, but it's been decades, so it was nice seeing it from my sofa, than with scraped up fingers (I did this before latex gloves) and washing my greasy hands in gasoline...back in the day. As always, look forward to watching your next video!!
That's so crazy. One of the first places we hit looking for a dive bar after moving here.
I found it looking for my golden tee game.
My buddy lives right down the road. Good call on the Troegs
In Czechoslovakia it was Babeta.. :)
Damn dude she has a lovely voice..wow this video brings back memories and makes me feel real old dude..lol..keep up the good work Chris..🤘👍🤘
quelle belle voix.... very good voice...
Ride that over to Manhattan! Show us around. I've never been.
Good morning 🌞 Chris and Jen and Gus 😮 I like 👍 the moped 🏍️ bike 🚴 I think 🤔 it would be a fun 🤩 bike 🚴 for Jen and you to ride around the block and down to the bar 😮 🎉🎉❤I had one ☝️ that I rode it was fun 🤩 you’ll have a great time with it 😮😮
That's an awesome find. I'm sure Jen will be riding that around a lot...
Dude badass I was 8 when my stepbrother had one and I would ride that all over magnolia hills. Good times! I'd love to get 1 just for fun.
That's awesome. Yeah, why not scoop one up! Or an electric bike
In 1980, bought one new as a red Montgomery Wards 'Imperial'. List price was $749, but Wards had it marked down to $399. My state limited them to 20 mph, but mine could barely make 15, until I removed the restrictor-plate from the carb. Then it would max out around 25. Not the best brakes or handling, but the Sachs 505 is one of the best moped power units. I still have mine & last rode it about 10 years ago. Where legal, they also sold these with a smaller rear sprocket that could do 30!
I have a 1974 Motobecane Mobylette yellow almost the same type of bikes these are awesome and your moped looks so perfect and clean.)
I used to have a 77 Columbia. I rode that thing everywhere from Buena park to Huntington Beach in my late teen years 20 something years ago and loved it . Bought it used for 75$
Nice fine absolute beautiful bike, love these old fines
Jen, I Love the voice!
Who has more fun than u guys. Love it. Probably more power than Dave's xr
LOL, we try to have fun! I don't know man she's kind of a turtle. Tops out around 25 miles an hour down hill. Probably faster than Daves bike right now though
If Jen is on I’ll watch
....those things go on forever.....nice find!
Fab design and well constructed.
Still relevant today.
Great video! I had a 1977 Columbia Commuter a long time ago. Hope to see a road trip video.
Nice little bike
Big fun 😊 gritings from poland
You're probably freaking out your hens Chris!!
Haha no they are pretty used to me ripping around the yard
No one commented... beautiful voice nonsense's lady friend!
Haha! Great video. That looks like a sweet find, especially for $90!!
I have a 1980 Yamaha QT50 that I spent a stupid amount of money to do performance mods. They are fun neighbourhood toys, but not much good other than that.
Take it to Tail of the Dragon Deals Gap. Haha. That would be a great video. Full throttle the whole route!!
thanks. And yeah definitely a good buy. Couldn't go wrong at $90. Those old QT50 are Great bikes! My buddy used to have one. And yeah that would be cool. Pretty much Full Throttle No matter what you doing on this thing LOL.
Fabulous Voice Jen!! Wow..
that's a super cool moped, great find!
Nice score on the Moped ! Need more singing 🎤
I wish you could do more of these type scooters or motorcycles
One week it's learning clutch in a 3500, next week it's a moped. She's eclectic, for sure!! : )
Cool-Jen
Amsoil your good to go. Love it Jen
Your neighbors must love you…lol
Ms. Joplin would be proud.
I knew you'd try to pull woolies!
Damnit man, been watching your videos for a few days, bingeing... Are you me? lmao. Also a mechanic, but on the A&P side and I do the same shit. Awesome video editing and content! Keep em comin!
Awesome man can't thank you enough for bingeing and checking out some videos. Thanks a lot for the feedback also.
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Anytime! Keep up the good vids!
I'm a singer and musician and you have a beautiful voice!
Jen sounds good !!
That's a classic all day 👌
Jen: “Are we gonna die!?!”
Chris: “Yea we’re gonna go for a ride!”
elle fume trop , le mélange est trop riche en huile , avec une bonne huile 2 temps 2% ou 3% suffise....merci pour toutes vos vidéos ou vous êtes toujours souriant et cela fait plaisir a voir...👍👍👍
I love your videos. Your my kind of people.👋
Jen is so perfect, lucky guy
Jen has one heck of a good voice. Please get her to sing more.
I've never liked Columbia's, but glad I clicked on the yellow moped, then felt sorry for the beautiful machine as you acted younger than I obviously feel. I'd buy that for $90, so clean, and actually some cool designs. I've taken my Honda NC50 (a NOped) on a few long camping trips, one being a 403 mile (4-5 miles of literally pushing it up hills it couldn't climb because I couldn't help it without pedals) 3 day weekend with 30 pounds of gear added to my 227, 20 ounces of spare fuel as I was in the boonies, gas stations planned at 50 mile intervals. Have most of the route planned from northwest iowa to Tampa Florida because my friends that moved there laughed at my new moped obsession (way too many now) from road racing and enduro racing. Not sure if I'm as carefree anymore to push the laws on bike paths, but thinking I'll take a true moped with pedals and just tell the man that I'm only trying to get to Florida for a new job and better life.
When he said, "Yeah, she's a real cutie!" He's talking about his girl! Agree!!
Just a little two stroke, spoken like a true motorhead😉 Tell Jen, that they make candles that smell like racing fuel if she would prefer that, haha
Reminds me of my yellow Honda Express complete with freezer basket
Super clean. Wow
Yeah definitely pretty minty for a 1978
it looks like a Jawa Babetta, nice moped
I had a 1972 model, just like it😊
Jen is like, are we gonna die? What? Wanna go for a ride? 😂
Nice haircut
Awesome, man! 🏍👍 Funny, I had a cat named Turbo also 🐈⬛😁
This is a precursor to the very quick Sachs Madass Scooter, which the tubular steel frame resembles.
Thanks for the upload 👍
You and Gus to Alaska!
That thing was kept in a garage for sure. I have an old motorcycle repair course from the early 70's and it included a bonus handout about how to repair mopeds. I think their so cool, but you never see them anymore. If you still have it, do you want to sell it?
I had a Honda trail 90 that I wish wasn’t stolen. 🤷🏻♂️ fun rigs.
Positively mint find!
''are we gonna die?'' ''yeah lets go ride it'' lmao :D
what an awesome find
In europe, we call that moped puch. I have one tomos puch and its very good!
Sounds just like my chainsaw….hahahaha. SWEET. Blessings
Everything works but the light 🤣
Jen is too cute 😍
Thats a copy of a Puch maxi. Same frame design and same engine. Very good moped, driven a lot of kilometers with it!
great taste in beer i drink miller lite also.
Hi there from Germany. Well you´re right it´s a SACHS engine round and about 47 cc. As we are allowed to ride a moped like this at the age of 15, because basically it is ment to be a bike because of it´s pedals, it is restricted to a speed of 25 km/h. Ok, what you do fist when you get a socalled Mofa in Germany, is try to make it faster. The most easiest way to fasten up the shown SACHS engine is to change the manifold to one with a bigger diameter. Those parts are very easy to get and will fit just fine. 40 km/h will be the speed right away. (You can´t do a lot to change the bore of the zylinder for example, mainly because it´s one piece together with the zylinderhead)
And than there are the italien Vespa engines starting at 50cc, which are mostly put in scooters but also in an APE, and are build to change zylinders in almost every size you want up to 140cc. And that will give you speed an power. Of course all this is absolutly illegal in Germany. But, well, you know how it is when you are young.
Keep on going!
2 beers + 1 cheesesteak = 1 Smokey Burnout!
H ha! "Is it safe?" "NO?. LOL. Funny! Very fun video and cute. Yea those two strokes do like to blow the bue smoke out the pipes that's for sure. Should anger just about every less than informed Person in and mile radius. LOL.
