When my dad passed away two years ago, one of the things I was sure to get from his workbench was the same tin of 3-In-One oil that I had used as a kid on my bike. The smell was a flashback to my childhood. Great sponsor for your wrenching. Thanks for the great videos Mustie1!

I could'nt believe my eyes when i saw some Batavus mopeds.
The factory is just a couple of miles from my hometown and i never knew they exported this stuff to the States. Batavus is one of things that we, as Frisians, are really proud of, together with the Frisian horses, for instance.
Those mopeds are very popular these days, there is a revival of classic mopeds going on in the Netherlands. Friesland is a provence of the Netherlands, as you might know. But we still have our own language and culture and Batavus is a part of our heritage, just as Harley and Indian is to the USA.
All your footage is very interesting, btw.

Clinton-brand mopeds are rebadged Sachs mopeds from Clinton Engines Co. There was only a single model made, the 50-A. It used a Sachs 505 engine and was only made from 1978 to 1980. The Clinton 50-A had turn signals and the magneto system was augmented by an extra battery to keep all the lights bright. It had a detachable gas tank (nice for cleaning and rust treating) The tank held 1.1 gallon. Fuel was premix, weight of the bike was 119 lbs.

I've used it in motors, bearing blocks, on high-carbon tool and knife surfaces and on a long q-tip to clean mechanical surfaces...drizzeled it into chain drives and dripped it down into old choke cables and gas-feed cables on lawnmowers, & in my sewing machine. Shoot a little in on the bearing in the bottom of a weed-eater and lubricate any pivot point, in a mechanical linkage system. Also is great to use on model airplanes and model trains, battery operated model boats...and the uses are endless!

Mustie1, the smell of 3 in 1, gasoline, and Johnson’s paste wax are just a few that I like and bring back memories of pre teen years frankensteining my own bikes from parts in the junk yard or along side the road in the late 50’ early 60’s of Schwinn! Gasoline to clean them up, 3in1 to lube them (or take apart) and paste wax to make them look pretty and fly through the air - haha.
Very good purchase and clean up/tune up! Should make for a nice little around town putter!
You might take the beaver out to the regatta turn and capsize some sailors as they look at the beaver in awe - haha.

German Sachs 500-505 series - one of the best moped engines ever! Some mopeds had a separate belt or chain drive with the pedals, but the 505 Sachs, had it all built in to the gearbox.
I purchased a 'demo' 'Wards Imperial' moped with this engine, from Montgomery Wards in 1980, for $400, after they marked it down from the original retail of $750. It's the only new motor vehicle I ever bought!
My gas- tank is built in to the frame like your Puch. At the time, their catalog listed another model with a tube-frame and separate gas-tank, similar to yours. Mine was built in the US by Columbia - the bicycle company, which they also sold as the 'Columbia Commuter'.
In my state, these were restricted to 20 mph, but mine could barely top 15 until I removed the restrictor-plate from the carb. Then it would do 20 easy, or even a bit more. So I guess that made it the 25 mph version. 30 mph models used a smaller rear sprocket.
Mine's suffered from being stolen and recovered from neighborhood delinquents in the '90s, then being stored in a leaky shed for awhile. But I fixed it up and got it running again a few years ago. Shutting off the gas and running the the engine to burn off the remaining gas for storage has saved the carb.
5 years ago, I also bought and revived a 1977 Euro Sachs moped. It has the 504 engine, with a separate chain-drive for the pedals, Km speedometer, and a strange headlight pod with a 'half' headlight across the top, and the horn behind a grill across the bottom.
in the '70s, many states changed their motor vehicle regulations to allow these without titles, registration or tags. But then they relaxed the speed restrictions and many states now require registration and tags again.

Musty a lot of people don't understand about adding Stay-Bil to a fuel system if a motor is going tgo sit for any length of time. I use the stuff in all of my combustion motors, from m/c's to lawn tracktors and snow blowers. I have a '92 Lincoln Mark Vii Bill blasé edition that I have had for 20+ years. If I'm lucky the car is driven 500 miles a year,it currently has 61K on the clock and I picked it up with 42k.There are times the car sits for a season or two but I put stay-bil and the next time I fire it up it starts right up. Even when I store my VRod for the cold winters here in New England I've never had a problem starting. To me its an awesome investment

Not sure if I'd mentioned this before, but 3-in-one eats rust. I used it on a brake line union as it was rusted into a "T" and would not come off. I let the 3-in-one soak over lunch for about an hour and a half. Came back out and the rust came off the line like wet sand, and union came out of the "T" fine, but still required a back-up wrench and some force. I now use it when doing brakes to prevent the line from twisting behind the union. And when dealing with nut-on-bolt combo, I'll soak it behind the nut. I've come to realize that the only thing that really helps metal siezed into metal is to heat the outside metal then remove the inner metal.

You feel this vehicle is safe for highway travel? Yes, I do. It's not pretty, but it will get you where you want to go.
You got no outside mirror. It's lost. You have no functioning gauges. No, not a one. However, the radio still works.
Funny as that may seem, the radio's the only thing that's really working good. Don't ask me how.

I remember the very first can of 3N1 fluid I ever seen was on Momma's sewing machine table. Little can about an inch and a half tall. When it got empty she use to have Dad refill it from his "Big Can" as she put it. That was 57 years ago, and 3N1 is still a great product I use all the time.

Back in the mid 70s a friend and I had been given a Puch moped. Having a lot of 2 stroke between us we started to tweak and twist on it to go faster. I took it out one day after putting a bigger carb and an expansion chamber on the exhaust. Man that thing would fly! Buried the Speedo at 45 and just kept pulling. I turned around and came back and show off a bit and fly past his place. I flew by and being less than a block I got on the brakes. I managed to slow down to about 30 when the brakes faded away. Less than 25 yards from a very busy US route 41 that was usually bumper. I clenched my teeth and blew through the intersection. I got slowed down, turned around and waited about 5 minutes to cross back across US 41. I took my still shaking butt and moped back to my friends house. I never rode the thing again. I was one cool cat back then, I figured I used up at least 7 of my 9.lives...

Looks the same engine, they put the front sprocket as close to the crankcase as they could to stop naughty boys from putting bigger sprockets on them lol

Aluma-weld sticks weld anything aluminum with propane torch. I have way too many of them, maybe 200 sticks. I fixed holes in my aluminum jon boat. I think they would work to put that nipple back on the fuel shutoff.

    • @n2n8sda
      @n2n8sda 6 років тому +1

yep.. "lumiweld" and similar brand sticks can repair that kind of stuff really easily... its probably a common fuel tap size and if you dont have any sticks already a new chinese tap is probably cheaper... but always useful to have an on hand
