So glad the PS5 upgraded version is on PS Plus Extra now! I hadn’t played any Final Fantasy since PS2 I believe. I was so young I barely remember. Then on a whim I decided to play Final Fantasy 16 when it released and it was one the best games ever played. I understand the gameplay was significantly different than the old Final Fantasy games but from what I’ve heard in videos… the scale and epic of the story is common along the games. For that reason I’m so excited to go and play last few single player titles. Just started FF7 remake on PS5 last night and am so excited after the starting missions. I can’t believe I’ve missed out on these games for so many years.

If every game's 60fps mode only dropped the resolution I'd go for it every single time. It's the only thing I'm willing to sacrifice on consoles for better framerate.
@@SaboteurDS Except it's not. I think there was a little bit of an oversight here on DF's part because while yes the 60fps mode feels incredible, I can easily tell that there are some much sharper textures in the graphics mode. Stuff like environmental and clothing textures are noticeably sharper and having the ability to pick up tiny details such as subtle emotions and blood vessels in character's eyes and tiny scuffs and scratches on Cloud's buster sword have a night and day difference in quality IMO. Once the 60fps novelty wears off, I highly recommend fans check out some of their favourite cutscenes in the graphics mode. In FF7R the visual experience is super important to hardcore FF7 fans and I think if they do happen to have a 4k screen, they are absolutely doing themselves a bit of a disservice if they choose to completely ignore the graphics mode because simply because it's not 60fps.
Because it's so early in the console generation, it's hard sometimes to remember that I'm even playing on a new generation. But when I see ~1s loading, vs ~30s....yeah, I'm glad I upgraded.
In some ways that feels far more transformative than just a mere graphics upgrade. Ghost of Tsushima at 60 FPS is great, I love quick resume on the Series X for easily jumping back in on a variety of games. There are hiccups to be sure and supply problems are putting a damper on it but this generation has some really snazzy features that really change the way I'm approaching games.
I cant believe how worried i was about this game after the first announcement forever ago. All the rumors of how bad it was going, turned out to be the best thing they could have done. So happy they made this
@@albertwesker9592 Because they are taking the remake into a different direction. It's not just a simple remake. It's a new chapter that goes alongside the original games and movie. That ending is really messed up because we don't have the next game but I'm I am confident they are taking in into an interesting direction. My guess is that Sephiroth or Jenova's spirit tried one last ditch effort to take over the world after the Advent Children movie and it involve either time travel or alternate realities. The weird spirits stuff we saw that were not in the original game are guiding events a certain way.
@@albertwesker9592 Compared to games like Kingdom Hearts it's still one of the less messy and weird story that SE has made. As long as we get sequels that explain things it should make that ending better in the future. I still remember how much shit the Force Unleashed 2 game got for it's shit ending where you just capture Darth Vader. We never got a 3rd game to make that ending work in the timeline.
After playing the first mission on the upgrade, it felt like in retrospect i was playing the game with grease smeared glasses for the 3+ playthroughs on the ps4 pro. Everything just looks so much clearer, the ability to read a sign clearly from like 10 feet away makes it seem so much more real and less ethereal
i just bought the PS5 upgrade, and this will be my 3rd time replaying this game ( 1st on PS4 and 2nd on PC ), and my god it's just so good, i hope Rebirth will also have a smooth 60 fps like this
Apparently there will be the option but we really can't be too sure of it being a quality mode. Hopefully it has good image quality and a solid frame rate.
This game was made for PS5, started playthrough on PS4 pro, and now finishing on PS5. Performance mode makes the animations and cutscenes absolutely god tier
I always prefer higher quality/resolution graphics over frame rate. Of course if I can have both, I would. And that's one of the advantages of PC - in the future when you upgrade your PC, you can often go back and play last gen titles with max res and frame rate!
It depends for me. If it’s a more casual single player game, and the 30 fps mode offers substantial visual improvements (not just more pixels, that shit’s irrelevant, but stuff like ray tracing, improved lighting, draw distance etc.) then I’d choose the 30 frames mode. In this game defo 60 fps, though, since the only difference is pixel quantity and 1512p is already more than enough for me, especially when paired with modern AA techniques and upscaling methods.
Some genres/types of gaming excel at 60fps and up. Anything with timely action controls benefit from the superior input response that comes with 60fps~. Perhaps some RPGs, puzzle games, slower moving games can survive fine at 30.
I played on a regular ps4. I noticed the textures but they didn't bother me as much as the NPC popping. Blurry textures are noticeable if you are looking directly at them but it's very hard to ignore people getting beamed down from the Enterprise as you get closer.
Everyone arguing about 60fps vs 4k/30, the thing is that 60fps makes the actual rendering look smoother and the battles look completely different. I've been a resolution fanboy but this has changed my mind completely, and because the 60fps version still looks extremely close to the 4k mode in terms of fidelity it a clear choice
Yup. I mean, if you really want to justify the cost of your wall sized TV then okay...if you must, but it's absolutely not worth losing 30fps over. The fidelty is fine and the game just plain looks and feels better when it's moving that smoothly.
If you can't track the image, you inherently lose image quality. 60fps gives you much greater permanence in the image while in motion, which means you can discern more detail than you would at 30fps. But photo mode is better at 4k/30 so there's that.
I wish they compared the new skybox in the slums a little more cause I noticed right away that Midgars towers and plates looked different. Would love a side by side comparison
I'm not totally sold on some of those volumetric light changes. Whilst the PS4 had some nice contrast in light the PS5 makes some scenes look a bit bland. If the volumetric light wasn't so uniform and almost filter like, maybe it would look better for me.
Kinda wish we could've got 1800p with 60 fps for the performance mode but either way, the 60 fps make it feel like a new game all over again and I'm loving it
I was sooo stoked to play the remake that i didnt even notice any issues like the "Door", only thing i noticed was the city in the background while you walk above it
You guys do a great job. I don't understand half the things your saying but I'm learning, and I appreciate the consistent quality and positivity of all the content.
Digital Foundry on point! Thanks Square Enix for this masterpiece a 2nd time on the PS5! I will be popping in the disc after Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart. Dam to many games. Playstation got us eating to good. It's only been 7 months. Sheesh. 😊
Just got Intergrade on PC and came here to check its performance on PS5. I'm actually surprised that the PS5 wasn't able to have 4k60 because on PC I can run it at a native 4k and get between 85-120fps in most areas. I know my GPU is more powerful than the PS5's (RX 7800XT), but still, seeing how smoothly it runs on my end, staying above 100fps in most areas, you'd think the PS5 would be able to handle at least 60. And yes, I do have the mod that disables the game's dynamic resolution, I *am* playing at 4k.
Playing it for the first time on PS5, put eight hours into it and I love it! Although I opted to go with the 4k/30fps mode because for some reason the camera movement on 60fps mode makes me feel dizzy... same thing happened with Miles Morales too weirdly enough lol. Oh well, it looks absolutely gorgeous and a locked 30fps is perfect!
I've always chose graphics over performance. Ideally I'd like to have both but graphics are always a priority. Half my gaming is just stopping the action and looking around at the detailed environments. Idk why so many people hate on graphics modes, let people choose how they want to play!
@@tylervincent2559 I’m with you on that last part For me personally, I prioritise performance over graphics, but I’m also glad that instead of forcing one or the other, they finally started giving us a choice since “different strokes for different folks”
@@tylervincent2559 it’s the current state of gaming and the “GIVE ME MOR FPS” mentality. High FPS is a must for twitchy shooters, and an argument can be made that this game is so fast paced, that high FPS make combat more enjoyable. But for some single-player story driven games, there is a beauty to having 30fps, in which it adds more motion blur, which in turn feels more cinematic. I’ve always said, games that don’t require fast movement, like turn based RPGs, should stay at 30fps(hell maybe even 24fps to match the look of films) because it allows the graphics quality to be turned up to max for the full experience. This is coming from someone like me who enjoys 144fps PC gaming on Apex Legends. Both frame-rates can exist and in some cases should serve as an artistic choice.
One detail you didn't mention is that the game's occasional pre rendered cutscenes are still fixed at 30FPS in performance mode. No deal breaker, just worth being aware of. The intro is the most glaring example.

Intermission was a lot of fun, but you can't swap characters in battle. Fortunately Yuffie is a blast to play and she's quite versatile. The only issue I had was targeting in the box break mini game... it's the only real challenge when trying to get the trophy for it and probably the hardest part of the DLC.
@@slorr55 The main content? Probably 4 hours or so. But I'm slow and look everywhere. The mini games will add some time. There are a few bosses too, which was cool.
When I was playing Crash trilogy on Playstation, and saw some PC help videos for levels that were 60fps, I felt nauseous playing it right afterwards and it just seemed so wrong. And I had seen tens of hours of 30fps gameplay, and one minute of 60fps at that point. The difference is so big at least for me.
The prices of games would be much higher when the store would be the only option and right now you already pay more on the store than the competition for 3rd party games On PC you have a lot of stores to choose On Xbox you can at least buy from other countries stores and change it in seconds
If you can get an Xbox One X and swap out the stock drive with a SSD, you have a pretty great system, even in 2021. Especially if you have gamepass and a good tv that can do VRR.

I would think that FF7R E2 would be on Unreal 4 because Unreal 5 was announced so recently and still isn't officially available for big devs to use. The version out now is a beta and you wouldn't want to make a big game on an unfinished version of a game engine

I hate that they broke up the game into 2 parts, kinda lame
Great stuff, Tom. You caught all the major points I noticed when I was playing through last night and this morning.
Gotta play at 60fps.
I’m so happy with this upgrade, puts a whole new standard to how this should be done
Wrapping up returnal secret ending then going for this at STELLAR 60 FPS FUCK YES
Don't forget Ratchet and Clank. Played for 6 hours today, it's AMAZING!
@@jakeifraimov3430 rift apart is so fun. Fuckin eye candy too
Same here. Although I’m going with Ratchet & Clank first. ^^
60fps is so good on this game, sheeesh!
I have been waiting for you review before I re played again in fact. Performance mode it is! Thank for all your hard work DF
Great summer to have a PS5!!
@@AndreaNasuelli oh damn, yeah it sucks that it’s still hard to find one! I got super lucky that I got on in December at Retail price. Had to hunt one for like 3 weeks but I finally got one through the Walmart mobile app! Rachet and Clank Rift Apart is incredible though!! Worth buying the console just for that game!
Performance mode is the way to go! Buttery smooth.
Yeah they confirmed at 4:15 that the only diff between the modes is resolution
If every game's 60fps mode only dropped the resolution I'd go for it every single time. It's the only thing I'm willing to sacrifice on consoles for better framerate.
Problem is, it's not as crisp. Both are locked and steady so both are good depending on what you want.
@@arootube True native 4K is overrated, I always choose reconstructed/dynamic 4K or even 1440p 60fps over native 4K 30.
This is really the best channel on youtube, who knew watching game frame rate graphs could be so entertaining
Loading times, 60fps (at 1512 resolution) and Yuffie DLC are highlights for me. The added fog (@9:06) is the only thing I'm not too keen on.
Ya idk man the fog is a lil weird, maybe if I play the game again maybe it will actually make the atmosphere better
They should reduce the fog
I cant believe how worried i was about this game after the first announcement forever ago. All the rumors of how bad it was going, turned out to be the best thing they could have done. So happy they made this
Well it's still years off being completed so plenty of time for them to screw up.
The game is good but the ending and last chapter are completely nonsense and destroy final fantasy 7 itself
@@chamoo232 yeah probably, but the ending is messed up, people not familiar whit the whole final fantasy 7 compilation want understand a shit about it
@@albertwesker9592 Compared to games like Kingdom Hearts it's still one of the less messy and weird story that SE has made. As long as we get sequels that explain things it should make that ending better in the future. I still remember how much shit the Force Unleashed 2 game got for it's shit ending where you just capture Darth Vader. We never got a 3rd game to make that ending work in the timeline.
I'm really mad that they didn't released that update on the ps plus version, hope it will came out for free with the ps4 version of the dlc
Been playing in the 60fps mode and it’s great!
Best one yet Tom, really notice your effort on increasing the energy level when reading out your script. Keep it up!
This game was made for PS5, started playthrough on PS4 pro, and now finishing on PS5. Performance mode makes the animations and cutscenes absolutely god tier
30 FPS is no longer an option for me. 60 FPS gang!
I'm still waiting for 4k 60 fps.
@@eile4219 Why, though? That’s nothing but a waste of hardware resources. Native 4K that is (not 60 frames).
FINALLY, I find a comparison video that is godlike. Superb visual comparisons and explanations -- entirely comprehensive. Thanks!
Glad they fixed those textures, they definitely stood out to me on the PS4 Pro version
I played on a regular ps4. I noticed the textures but they didn't bother me as much as the NPC popping. Blurry textures are noticeable if you are looking directly at them but it's very hard to ignore people getting beamed down from the Enterprise as you get closer.
The smoothness is just unreal. Already platinumed but I have no problems replaying some bosses for fun it’s just gorgeous in motion.
Exactly this.
But photo mode is better at 4k/30 so there's that.
resolution < 60fps
@@cronoesify you got to pause to use photo mode so you might as flick it on when you want a picture
THanks Tom! Was hoping this video would turn up today.
1440p@60fps is the ultimate sweet spot, 4K@30fps is garbage!
Agreed!
12k would also be garbage at 30fps

I just came to see the door. Thank you DF! 06:47
I'm not totally sold on some of those volumetric light changes. Whilst the PS4 had some nice contrast in light the PS5 makes some scenes look a bit bland.
If the volumetric light wasn't so uniform and almost filter like, maybe it would look better for me.
Kinda wish we could've got 1800p with 60 fps for the performance mode but either way, the 60 fps make it feel like a new game all over again and I'm loving it
Conflicted cos I want to get it on PC but I also don't want to encourage console pricing in the the PC space.
I was sooo stoked to play the remake that i didnt even notice any issues like the "Door", only thing i noticed was the city in the background while you walk above it
4:12 that resolution and lose nothing except pixel count? Good, I am still using 1080p monitor lol
Definitely time to upgrade my friend.
Sheesh. 😊
Did they remove any of the in-game loading zones where you slowly shimmy past hallway junk?
Have the loading hallways been eliminated in Intergrade?
What a great video presentation , great job DF
Man im looking forward to finish the game in 60fps on my PS5 🥰
Just got Intergrade on PC and came here to check its performance on PS5. I'm actually surprised that the PS5 wasn't able to have 4k60 because on PC I can run it at a native 4k and get between 85-120fps in most areas. I know my GPU is more powerful than the PS5's (RX 7800XT), but still, seeing how smoothly it runs on my end, staying above 100fps in most areas, you'd think the PS5 would be able to handle at least 60. And yes, I do have the mod that disables the game's dynamic resolution, I *am* playing at 4k.
This is what I've been waiting on
I'm curious if Rebirth will have 60fps mode at all for Base PS5 or if it will only be 60fps on the PS5 pro.
Hope you all cover the recently released pc version on the Epic Game Store. 🤞

If you can get a PS5 that is. Or if Square will release it on the PC.
they've fixed other issues as well, concerning synergy materia , and now the limit breaks and some attacks can't be disturbed by sequences
@@tylervincent2559 I’m with you on that last part
For me personally, I prioritise performance over graphics, but I’m also glad that instead of forcing one or the other, they finally started giving us a choice since “different strokes for different folks”
The new lighting in tandem with the better HDR and performance mode make Intergrade a genuinely transformative experience.
Ps plus owners can get the free upgrade now.
One detail you didn't mention is that the game's occasional pre rendered cutscenes are still fixed at 30FPS in performance mode. No deal breaker, just worth being aware of. The intro is the most glaring example.
The combat feels sooooo nice at 60fps

On a big TV I chose graphics mode because it looks better. I never had a problem with this game at 30fps to begin with and the new lighting, shadows, and reflections looks really crisp and nice.
How long did it take for you to finish it?
@@slorr55 The main content? Probably 4 hours or so. But I'm slow and look everywhere. The mini games will add some time. There are a few bosses too, which was cool.

Wait! Default graphics mode?! For me it defaulted to performance mode.
I think it defaults to whatever you chose in your system settings.

The new 60fps mode is amazing. It feels so fuckin' buttery, I love it. It's so hard to go back to other games that don't have a 60fps option.
Yeah can't go back to 30 FPS slideshow
When I was playing Crash trilogy on Playstation, and saw some PC help videos for levels that were 60fps, I felt nauseous playing it right afterwards and it just seemed so wrong. And I had seen tens of hours of 30fps gameplay, and one minute of 60fps at that point. The difference is so big at least for me.
Fantastic, just what I wanted to know! Definitely will stick with that 60fps mode since all the other settings are the same. Thanks, Tom
These crazy prices are making me appreciate how much you actually get for $400.

I should imagine it will
Idk, Episode 2 is almost 2 years into development and UE5 is not available for devs until the end of this year
I would think that FF7R E2 would be on Unreal 4 because Unreal 5 was announced so recently and still isn't officially available for big devs to use. The version out now is a beta and you wouldn't want to make a big game on an unfinished version of a game engine
