No matter how powerful your console is , art direction is key to provide impressive graphics above fidelity or photo realism, and Santa Monica Studios are simply masters on what they do, above all else a polished experience with near perfect performance across the board, something really rare nowadays.
I've often used that to criticize certain devs... Or to build a case where consoles have their place. The Proprietary tech/ solutions on an SoC.
They're used and harnessed to do (specifically this gen) what some PC's cannot... unless having a very similar SoC (system on chip) where they would use all features and attributes of the console procedure that your GPU and CPU simply cannot duplicate... DICE and FROSTBITE being examples of these engines that just crank up "Settings" instead of building around the tech.
Ratchet Rift Apart and Miles Morales is a great example of this... "the PC" as a dev's primary platform of choice to just crank up things like Anti Aliasing, Res, Frame rate, bloom, shadows, textures... does not equate to a "Specialty team" if you will, made to harness strong capabilities of all proprietary tech... and this is the first time we're seeing this play out, 80-90% of PC gamers are playing 1080 some jumping to 1440 at 100-120htz...
Console and HDMI has made HDMI 2.1 relevant, and 4k @ 120 the best optimal target for a PC (unless you just don't care) but the proof is out there.... Sony implementing VRR, LG w/ their "TV like Displays" etc etc... quite a significant shift. PC will always have the top ceiling, but the desire to mass produce a console is finally pushing true innovations, similar to what the "CELL Broadband engine" tried on the ps3, but was missing too much of other power PC's had... a PS5 and SX "Pro" will even it out i believe for fair comparison.

Part of the reason Xbox is failing right now. They're chasing after the wrong thing. Too focused on having the most powerful hardware and not on just making a game fun. Theyve gotta be greedy and invest all their time in created DLC, microtransactions, loot boxes, and season passes to milk their consumer fanbase for more pennies. That's not what gamers need these days. Gamers are struggling from emerging post pandemic. Inflation has hit. Gas prices are way up and people are hurting financially. All of that stuff just listed shows a total disrespect for consumers, hard working consumers
All Developers should be required to take a “how to optimize” class from these guys

@Transistor Jump It's 100% worth it if you want to have a stellar reputation with gamers... Not worth it to some publishers as they just want the profit asap. That's the main reason many developers ship out half assed games. Not the only reason but ya.

Santa Monica and Insomniac are so impressive with optimizing their games. I loved Rift Apart and this game looks to be amazing as well

SM studios don't miss or cut corners. You can see the time and effort the devs pulled off. The VA is killing it along with the scoring team. The love is real for Ragnarok.

@@jerm7741 While I overall agree I had a blast tearing the Banished up in Infinite. The gameplay is really tight and just like you feel like a badass playing as Kratos I got the same stick your tongue out and demolish enemies feeling.

Only thing I didn't like about GoW(2018) was the lack of enemy variety. Definitely some cut corners there.

@@chop46878 I don't think the comparison is as apt for ascension. Ascension was released before the ps4, while both gow 2 and ragnarok where released after the new console releases, but for the old consoles. Both were unimaginable commercial successes and are considered by most the "bench marks" for their generation. No matter what you think of ascension as a game, it did not reach the same kinds of public as the other two.

I get what you’re saying, but also you have to remember PS3 had almost no first-party exclusives after PS4 launched, unless you count something like GT6 which was in development for PS3 well before PS4 was known to the public and only came out a month after PS4’s launch. That’s why I used Ascension here, like how many people also consider TLOU as PS3’s swan song as well despite that also coming out months before the PS4.

This game was built for the ps4... it is actually incredible that it runs at 1080p 30fps and looks THAT good

@yello It just felt more like a podcast than just a straight analysis. I like both types, but this felt like a nice change having the two of them just discuss results rather than presenting the results.
I remember playing Uncharted 4 on PS4 Pro back in 2016 and thinking "I'd be happy if games looked like this and ran at 60 FPS on new consoles." Here I am with a PS5 and Series X and that is more or less what has happened, and I'm not complaining. Games like GOW Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West still blow me away visually while running incredibly well. Unfortunately when games go full current gen, I think we'll see a return to a 30 FPS target.

The good part is 60fps is a design choice. When even horizon can be 60fps despite being open world current gen games can be properly optimized for looking good and running at 60fps on consoles if devs go that route.
@@devilduc 60 fps is so much better than 30. Games managed to look next gen while sticking to 60 fps and when a game is 30 fps only I blame developers for it (or publisher for not giving enough time to optimize)

I think that it is not a matter of consideration, but a monetary one. They know that there are not enough ps5 sold in order to be a profitable game.

Artistic skill and love of the craft have trumped the latest in graphics. It looks incredible, the story is amazing. 10/10 worth the wait. Sony has a gem of a studio.
Idk how anyone is surprised the level of detail they got out of the ps4 when we’ve seen this kind of work at the end of ps3 life cycle. It was developed for ps4 and then 10 bucks gets you your better options to make the game look a little better on ps5. Hopefully next god of war is full blown next gen game.

It's a pretty awesome experience, so far.
While a part of me would love for it to have been a PS5 exclusive (thus seeing Santa Monica pushing boundaries even more), I can't help but admire the devs for wanting to finish the Norse Saga where it started, all while doing for the PS4 what The Last of Us did for PS3 - leaving me stunned at what can still be done on an older machine.
Yeah their eventually PS5 exclusive is gonna look insane!

Really great news! I was hoping that this is the approach they took, considering there are way more PS4s out there than PS5s at the moment and this was a heavily anticipated game. I'm not personally into the game, but it's good knowing my roommate who only has a PS4 will have a good time with it :)
That motion blur implementation is actually incredible, that might be the smoothest 30 FPS I've ever seen.
Not my type of game either, never found the hack and slash genre appealing.
@@DrJones20 i like the original god of war games because it's ALL hack and slash. there's almost too much complexity in the new ones, in the story, the gameplay, the upgrade paths, etc. it is a technical improvement in every way, but the gameplay loop is quite different from the originals and just not my kind of thing.

Watching this game in motion on a PS4 and Pro honestly feels like black magic to me. It looks astounding. I am so happy that I will be able to finish this part of the Norse saga on PS4 as well.
GoW: Ragnarok isn't a port to the PS4 and PS4 Pro. They were the target platforms. If anything, the PS5 version is the port, which is why it doesn't look much different.
It is not a port, it is basically a PS4 game that is sold at a higher price to PS5 owners.

I'm pretty sure the ps5 sdk is almost the same as the ps4 ask so it wouldn't have taken much effort to port it over anyway.
Since ps5 can run ps4 games, they've pretty much kept the majority of the sdk the same with probably a few changes and upgrades for raytracing, 4k, 8k and the few things like that.
Its God of War 2018 and then they added features like the PC version of 2018 had for the PS5 version, with other improvements
but its not a miracle or black magic we saw this 4 years ago

Great news that Ragnarok is a great experience no matter what system you have. It's interesting that Santa Monica decided to make Ragnarok for the PS4 first & foremost and just make some mostly subtle enhancements on PS5 whereas with Horizon Forbidden West from what I've seen of the PS4 version it seems like Guerilla prioritized making a PS5 showcase that could still run on PS4, but not without some more obvious compromises (the LOD and asset loading issues in cutscenes & certain cutscenes like the opening credits being pre-rendered video files being the ones that stuck out to me when watching DF's comparison video).
Still need to play through God of War (2018) though...
Horizon Forbidden West started as a PS4 title first and foremost and when development was taking longer than expected they were basically like "eh what the hell make a PS5 version by upping the texture quality".
2018 isn't too bad at all. Give it a try!
@@Shaker1000 I know! It’s in my backlog. Problem is that ever since I finished Fire Emblem: Three Houses back in 2020 I’ve been on a JRPG kick. It also doesn’t help that I’ve been playing a lot of Final Fantasy XIV & Modern Warfare II as of late. But hopefully once I’ve finally finished Forbidden West or Plague Tale Requiem I’ll start God of War (2018). I do love great story & storytelling in games, so God of War (2018) should be right up my alley.
They really broke all PS4 barriers with this game, without a doubt in my opinion it is the most visually impressive game of the eighth generation of consoles.
They even put a performance mode on the PS4 Pro that I didn't expect at all, this game really feels like a farewell to a generation with a golden key.

I think it nailed everything it was going for I absolutely loved the ending love what they did with the characters. Amazing boss fights way better than 2018 boss fights. Imo one of the best games ever made. Definitely my goty

I enjoyed this game on PS5 but the fact a game this good looking runs at a stable frame-rate at 1080p on a 9 year old console that was 400 dollars is incredibly impressive.
Just started playing on the standard PS4 about 2hrs ago. And it has been glitch and stutterfree for sure. The graphics quality is noticeably better than the 2018, but it's not too different.
It's just 30fps but with no stutters or framedrops, so I've had no problems with the combat so far. Just the inherent input lag from the controllers themselves. Which makes parrying a little tricky. But the gameplay is slightly more refined than the previous game.
I haven't played far enough to try out any new stuff, but the old stuff is still crisp and smooth.
I'd definitely recommend getting it on the standard PS4 if you had any doubts about the performance.
Basically it plays exactly like the last game on the PS4, performance wise.

The only difference I experienced playing the game last night on both PS4 and PS5, is that the game loads much, much quicker on PS5 (no surprise there) and has little to no texture loading issues (a la HFW), PS4 on the other hand has a few texture and asset rendering issues, when traveling to and from between different zones, but overall, its a pretty stable, and visually impressive experience on both consoles.
You bought it two times? Playing the PS4 Version on PS5 wont give you the PS5 graphics upgrade..

@@jebalitabb8228 True, PC market is still huge. GoW (2018) Sold 2 million copies in just a month and that is alot, whem you think about how many played it on PS4 first. They sold 5 million on PS4 the first month. Horizon sold 716k first month on PC. The funny thing is GoW generated 500 mill $ in the first 10 months, CoD MW (2018) generated 600 mill $ in 3 days. Console excluisives mean shit, and should not exist.
So if Sony is smart, they should stop with exlusives. Its not the exlusives that sell consoles either way. And they are still loosing money with every console they sell.
Its a cross gen game, built on last gen infrastructure. Its no surprise.
Cross gen periods always show the full potential of last gen systems
When they continue the series ( not finished the game yet, dont spoil anything ), we will truly see what a next gen god of war will look like. That fully takes advantage of the SSD, etc. This game is not true reflection of what PS5 can do, this vid makes it obvious.

As a PS4 owner this is a very good news. Still, I wish we could see more games providing PS5 experience after Ragnarok.
I for one hate change of any kind and truly appreciate the hard work the developers put in to ensure that the visual fidelity, design, textures, gameplay and especially how exact the animations are especially the ones of jumping in and out the boat have remained almost identical from four years ago. Really warms the cockles of my heart.
They literally reused all of kratos animations from the 4 and a half year old game. Yikes.

Played about 4 hours on PS5 last night, you can tell it's very much a PS4 game. Whilst the visuals are great, they're not pushing the envelope and some of the gameplay is very rooted in PS4 design. Enjoying it though, the writing is top notch so far.
It's crazy that watching this video on mobile the PS4 and PS5 versions look nearly identical
On a 27" 1440p monitor it looks great on PS4 Pro. I'm also running a SATA III SSD, load times are quick, and I'm actually getting 60FPS in a lot of instances in performance mode. The texture streaming is far more fluid, and thus fewer stutters related to frame times.
DF should also test this!
Yeah SSD are amazing, either for PC or consoles, their speeds help tremendously in any game, also as you said due to the storage unit having to work less, frametimes are indeed improved.
@@aCiDzZ123 turned out to be good future proofing. I was actually surprised that the PS4 Pro launched with an HDD over an SSD. I installed it in May 2020 and I've had great experiences with all of the PS exclusives I've played. All of the games I've wanted are cross-gen, so there's been no rush to get a PS5. The Last of Us: Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Dreams, Horizon: Forbidden West, and God of War all run great on the upgraded Pro.
An interesting caveat; my monitor detects a 2160p RGB format since 1440p isn't supported natively on PS4 Pro for some reason. So in most games it's rendering at whatever the native resolution of the game is, and then down-sampling to 1440p. Typically it's checkerboard 4K or 1800-1650p, which scaled to 1440p looks really clean, especially on a 27" screen.
Really impressive stuff. Games still look phenomenal on base PS4.

This is good for the people on PS4 I guess but seriously what is even the point in having a PS5 when pretty much all the games on there are only slight upgrades compared to PS4. When will these next gen systems finally start using the extra power to it's advantage so that the games look noticeably better than last gen games?
When the majority of gamers upgrade. Covid pushed everything back at least two years. Probably won't see actual next-gen games until 2024.

@@bryankowalczyk3982 I’ve got a ps5 and an Series X and when it comes down to it both consoles perform identical in 3rd party games. Sony has always been known to focus more on single player exclusives while Xbox goes for multiplayer. Sony been killing it these last couple years but 2023 is shaping up to be Xbox’s year. Starfield, Redfall, Fable, Stalker 2, Forza Motorsport, Hellblade 2. It’s about to be ridiculous

8:15: Having higher resolutions lead to less background really bugs me in certain games; especially because it's the opposite of the cinema-like visuals they're trying to emulate. On celluloid film, you increase the "resolution" by using a larger film stock which in turn, makes the depth of field more shallow. So something like 16mm has less detail and sharper out of focus elements than 35mm (with the same comparison being true of 35mm to 70mm). With digital cinema sensors have a bit more variability but, in general, you get more detail/resolution from larger sensors which once again have a more shallow DoF.
GoW 2018 running at 60fps is still one of the best looking games on PS5. Can't say I'm not a little disappointed that 2 years in and I'm seeing very little difference between PS4 and PS5 version of Ragnarok though. Love the PS5 to bits, but feels like we are still waiting for the true wow factor games that set the generation apart.
That's the problem, people still waiting for revolutionary visuals in a era where the ceiling of graphics don't see so far away and studios pursuing that ceiling instead of good story/character building

Well, the law of diminishing returns plays a role here. PS3 to PS4 was not as big of a leap as PS2 to PS3. And now PS4 to PS5 seems like an even smaller leap.
With every generation, the differences will seem smaller.
Personally I'm just glad we're finally getting 60fps as an option on most titles

To be fair thats the way it was going from PS3 to the first PS4 games. The massive jump we saw from PS1 - 2 just doesn't exist anymore. The improvements are going to be gradual from here on out.
People have been saying for years that gaming peaked in the PS2 generation, I can already smell it being said of the PS4 generation with regard to graphics.

It's a technical marvel Santa Monica could make a game that looks this good run on a console about as powerful as a GTX 950.
I had the same reaction to TLoU 2, like this game, that game had no right looking as good as it did on a base PS4.
Sony absolutely kills it with their exclusives, so much love and skill poured into every project for sure!
It came out before the PS5 came out though. But yes, you're 100% right. What made the game look even better was the fact that I played that game on a plasma, which made the 30 FPS look a lot smoother.
I'm really glad this runs so well on a PS4, now I don't have to wait years for it to come to PC!
I do think this will be the last PS exclusive for last-gen, I hope.

Actually no it's because there are about 118 million PS4 owners, and the systems still sell. Also not everyone cares about graphics, they just want to play the game. I had a Ps5 and thought it was way overhyped. So I just kept my PS4 Pro which is fine and bought a Series X, which is much better imo, especially the BC. PS5 BC games look awful, very little in the way of enhancements. Also PS5 doesn't support games that run at 1440p on a 4K screen, so what's the point? Since many run at that resolution, at 60FPS.

I play it on Ps5, in performance mode with vrr and 120hertz mode, the sharpness is amazing, and the fluidity insane.
I wish they had made a version pushing the ps5 to the max, no doubt we will get a remastered version for ps5 for more money.

I'm glad that it's available on PS4. Say what you will, but where I live, you still can't walk into any store like Target, Wal-Mart, or Best Buy & pick up a PS5. But you can get a Series X. So it's smart for them to continue to make it playable on the PS4 & PS4 Pro. Hopefully one day in the not too far distant future - the PS5 will be a reality & not just a myth for the regular consumer.
I'm glad it is too. I got a Series X but I haven't bought PS5 yet. I think I'm going to play this and Horizon on PS4 Pro.

PS4 was 100$ cheaper than the disk version of ps5 and that’s only by comparing the official prices these consoles were announced at by Sony themselves. @@randomgamer19170 not everyone lives in the US you know, where I live there’s no such thing as walking into a store and buying a ps5 as if there’s no problem at all, Sony is a company and it makes sense why they’ll do whatever they can to increase their profits, that’s why ps4 is still getting first party releases. Also it’s not that simple to dump ps4 and fully focus on ps5 since there’s a lot of people still using a ps4 and if Sony were to discontinue it, it would only harm their sales, killing off consoles like that isn’t as easy as you might think.
Sony’s first party studios are legit the best in class, it’s amazing to see what they pull off!

Locked 60 mode. And I'm HUGE on the 40 fps modes of other games and even played all of horizon fw in 30 fps because rhe 60 fps mode looked horrible at launch but this game barely looks any better AT ALL at 30 or 40 fps so 60 fps is a no Brainer in this
1440p, 80fps+ VRR mode is the way I'm playing

Its a game made for the Ps4 then ported to the Ps5 hence the minimal difference in terms of graphical quality
This game in the OLED A95K it's a real dream an absolute enjoyment.
29-30fps is a deal killer for me now having adjusted to 60fps as a standard. Performance mode pros outweigh very minor hit to details.
Just played witcher 3 update on ps5, and the lighting on ray tracing mode looks great, but the 60 fps mode makes the game play 100times smoother and game still looks great.
40 FPS modes with VRR for these cinematic type games are fantastic as well, nice to see them popping up.

I love that on the ps5 version, loading from death is just 2 secs and half of that is the transition screen to gameplay. That alone make playing on GMGoW mode so much less of a hassle. Cold boot to the game is barely 10 secs if that.
When a studio wants to do it can do it! PlayStation studios do a very good job and really master consoles

I'm playing this game the same way I played the 2018 release. On a lowly base PS4. Still looks and feels great.
It's one of the best games of the year but clearly its a PS4 title if the differences are so small which is a little disappointing as we are still not pushing the PS5, anyway mine arrives Friday
There isn't enough PS5s in circulation to justify leaving the PS4 out yet. Maybe next time.

@@navpreetsingh8156 you can't create 2 different games , thats why we saw devs complaining about xbox series s , ppl was saying : yeah just create one good version and downgrade it to series s , but in reality they can't its too hard , so the only option is to create it to the weaker hardware then trying to upscale it , but that will not make the strong hardware sweat cuz rhe game wasn't developped for it , this is the case we're seeing here , its either make it ps5 exclu and create a hell of graphics but not gaining a loooot of money , or trying to make the best possible game that run on both consoles and get moooore money

Honestly the fact that this is a PS4 game at it’s heart is why we get much higher fps and resolution in certain modes. So there is that. If they pushed the PS5 visually and it only hit 30 fps, people would complain about that as well. It is also a great swan song game for PS4 at the end of it’s cycle, and it still looks stunning even if it’s not ‘officially’ a PS5 title.
Platinum'd the game on a stock PS4 and didn't feel like I was getting a cut-back or somehow inferior experience at any point. Absolutely amazing work, Sony exclusives continue to amaze!

even my mother notice 60fps on the ps5 version. she said everything is way faster. we tried to resolution mode and the frame rate was cut in half so we went back to frame rate.
Difference between ps1 and ps2 was shocking, difference between ps2 and ps3 was still pretty amazing. Sucks that we’re getting to this era with such diminishing returns in terms of transformational console upgrades. Seems like all we get now are slightly better detail, frame rate, lighting, and load times

There is a part of me that wonders if a piece of the decision to make the differences small and subtle is so they can sell the upgraded version in a year or some. It would be a solid business tactic, if so.
As good as this game looks it’s still a game that has to be able to run on 2013 hardware which is a shame! I can’t wait for cross-gen games to die.

Great video but for some reason my base PS4 version runs choppy as all hell... If I had to stick an fps number to it it honestly runs between 15-25 fps.... Any ideas guys? Waited 4 years (probably like all of us) for this and it's such a bummer....
Oh wow that’s unexpected. I would suggest to disassemble the console, there is probably massive buildup of dust on the fan which makes the console throttle. If that doesn’t help, try to change thermal paste on the main chip - it may have dried up over the years. Other option would be to format/initialise the console - maybe there are some files/processes clogging up the console (and in general keep at least 60-100 gb free on the console, never fill the hard drive to the brim). But I would start with cleaning up your system from the dust first. Cheers and hope it helps

As a PS5 owner, it’s just disappointing at this point that we’re now TWO years into the life cycle of the better consoles and we’re still getting fucked by old hardware…. A game like this DESERVED PS5 priority, but that obviously didn’t happen…. It’s essentially $70 for a fucking PS4 game which is madness!
You are not, its nextgen, human eye is what it is, you cant see differences from normal viewing distance, and nobody is playing on 10 meters tv that you need 8k shit..this nexxt gen is just money grab..
finally AAA game, with no issues and Bugs, like CP2077, SAINT ROW, GOTHAM KNIGHT AND .....
Starfield is next, it's a Bethesda game, guaranteed to have bugs.
