14:00 The 2020 Remake actually still provides choice to the player when going up the Shinra Building. Once you go through the garage and have Tifa get the keycard, you have the choice of going to the left and going up the stairwell peacefully (albeit fun character moments) or head straight to the elevators "guns blazing" where you will have a few fight encounters with Shinra.
@@gotreddonyou2439 Yeah the first time I played I chose the stairs and the second time I chose the elevator. I will always tell people to do the stairs. It's so much fun to listen to the banter and I love the fact that the characters feel the same way you do when you just about to reach the top.
Utterly bizarre that the person that uploaded this video makes a video this long and doesn’t even know that you could choose how to go up the building in remake…pretty lame
I was just about to say this. How does the guy not know you have the option to use the stairs or elevator at the Shinra building. It’s a pretty clear option at that point in the game 😑
He probably knew that but people love to belittle and that jabs at this game as much as they can even if they need to make up flaws to uplift their boomer original game
i went into remake with knowledge that it was going to be different to the original game so the shellshock of that was minimal, the ending however was a complete mindfuck. i like both games equally but for different reasons. they aren't the same game, both gameplay and story wise, so much so that i argue that you have to the play the original before playing the remake. Remake very much assumes you've played the original game and i think you can't really appreciate the changes and little details without playing the original, it also gives away some of the twists of the original game early that i say takes away from them a bit. both are great games and i recommend both of them.
"REMAKE" is just a subtitle of the game. It's actually a pseudo-sequel, since as you said, game expects you to have prior knowledge of the original plot (including spin offs like Crisis Core)
From what I've seen in game and interviews, as we all know, there are still a lot of Sephiroth remnants and reunion clones, one of course being Cloud, and because of this, Sephiroth's will was somehow able to travel in the lifestream to trigger changes in the past. We don't know how much future knowledge he has, but I think this series of "remakes" will be focusing on finally wiping out all of the Jenova cells and Sephiroth remnants for good. And if that means I can play a game I love from a new perspective and not know what's coming, then hell yeah! I'm terrified that I don't know what's going to happen, and I love it!
@@DravenxEyeless Not a "pseudo" sequel. Just a sequel. The "Remake" part was an elaborate lie, and honestly, the Japanese intelligence bureau (or the closest equivalent) should hire Square Enix 's marketing and brand management department yesterday. The way they essentially gaslighted the entire planet into accepting this ruse, instead of the utter insult it is, would turn Japan into a geopolitical superpower in less than a decade.
You’ve never fought Sephiroth in any of the games. Only Jenova. Sephiroth has been in the North Crater and the livestream the entire time. His connection to the livestream allows Jenova to move freely.
I am 42 and just recently played Remake and am now playing Rebirth. Never played the original, but will soon. For me Final Fantasy 7 is what the original Star Wars is for some; my favorite world, favorite characters, and favorite piece of entertainment ever/
no i knew how big materia was because it looks like baseball sized in the original, but also because they’re shown at size in advent children, which came out 20 years ago
Thinking of it as filler and padding just seems like setting yourself up for a bad time. I played the remake first and felt that it was very well paced. Everything felt relevant and fun. I was actually surprised when I went back and played the original and so much of it wasn't there. I think knowing what's gonna happen from the start makes you impatient to get to the parts you recognize instead of enjoying the extra content on its own terms.
This. I just don't get this "padding" complaint. Like, what's your rush in getting to the next set piece? Just enjoy your time in this world and with these characters, man. I wanted to spend a week doing missions with Tifa in sector 7 before going to the next reactor lol.
@@carlosjuliop I kinda agree that the additional parts are really nice and cool for the narrative, but after the second playthrough, some parts are really boring to do again, like that mechanical arm or Corneo's Coliseum just to get to the part that you want. Also, this game not having a boss rush mode is one of the few flaws that it has, because it is really a pain to complete 90% of a chapter just to get to the boss fight
@@gabrielnovais871 You mean the part with the mechanical arms with the amazing music and atmosphere with Aerith? I just don't look at games that way. I replay them because I want to experience them again, not to get to some boss fight or set piece as fast as possible. That said, having all the bosses in the simulator would be nice I suppose.
There's the good stuff when the characters are front and center where they and the relationships are fleshed out more or those serious, powerful emotional moments like when the plate goes down or when you reach the top and look down and see the destruction and feel the weight of it all. And then there's the filler like running around to fetch cats or kids or whatever it is the quest giver wants. These aren't exclusive to FF7R and lots of other games do this too but it's still annoying no matter what game it's in. I also personally didn't like it when you often got railroaded and couldn't go in a certain direction as your forced to slow walking speed and given a warning you can't go that way. Especially annoying like in the church when you meet Aerith the first time they taunt you with a materia right there and you're blocked from getting it, like it's right there let me have the shiny 😂 These are just nitpicks for the most part though I do hope Rebirth makes the side stuff more interesting like the card game, that looks like fun and will hit the same notes Gwent did for me in Witcher 3.
I agree. Padding is too negative a term for what it is. Everything Remake does either 1. Expands the narrative 2. Teaches the player a game mechanic or provides them a fun challenge with a meaningful reward 3. Helps the pacing of the game by giving the player things to do other than watch cutscenes 4. Usually (though not always haha) all 3 I also think the video was spot on when he mentioned how clouds expression mimic'd the players, but that's totally on purpose. FF7 Remake and Rebirth have a lot of side quests that poke fun on how 90's RPG's had boring, chore, side-content. Usually the characters remark how boring the quest is, it's played for laughs, and there's a fun twist halfway through so its not ACTUALLY boring.
I played this game when it launched on ps4. Throughout my life I've played FF7 on ps1, switch, pc, xbox, and ps4. The entire sequence of Midgar takes place in up to 6 hours. You can breeze through it on any original playthrough. What I love about Remake is it allows a more in depth look at Midgar; the people who live there both above and below the surface. It expands this super linear quest into allowing the player to get in touch with WHY and WHO they're fighting for. Jesse's dad is suffering from Mako poisoning, hence why she's so adamant on the cause. Aerith is super uplifting and almost "fake" because she's hiding something and just wants to be normal. Barret has this overall resolve of why he's fighting that becomes fleshed out. In the end the remake expanded on what was a "mundane" part of the game and gave the player a reason as to WHY they're doing what they are. Why the connections and people are so important. I have played through this story 4 times now and every time I learn something new. It's a great game and opens the eyes of the players to know exactly what they're working toward. Not only that, it gives more background into antagonists, side characters, and otherwise uninteresting characters. They all serve a purpose, whereas in the original, they were just passerby's. I love Remake and how it aimed to flesh out the world of Midgar, and since Rebirth has come out, the same is true for that. It fleshes out parts where the player was once like, "oh this would be cool to see animated." We see the Midgarsomr actually end up on a pike and and a quick glance as to the original "Oh Sephiroth was here..." We see the flashback and players who KNOW what's going on can easily recognize something isn't right here. Both Remake and Rebirth are fleshing out a world which in the beginning was mundane and could easily be walked through. And that's why I love SE for making this game into what it has.
I might be in a minority but I love Remake. The padding and extra stuff in the game didn’t bother me as others. I enjoyed spending more time with the characters we grew up loving.
Ur not alone,I love it 2.i just dnt like a few things but hopefully rebirth fix em.ive gotten over the the plot twist,it is what it is.i can either hate it and complain and miss out on characters I been playing since I was literally 8 years old or enjoy this version ?once I got over it,I really love this game...hate the padding though lol
That's an interesting choice to make Cloud always be the one Corneo chooses. That part I feel like they should've kept the same. It's kind of a test in a way, and a bit of a puzzle. Get the right combination of items and you get chosen. Pick the wrong things or fail to collect the right things and you're relegated to the basement or a locked room.
Yea it’s little things like this that really don’t matter but you still notice it. I’d love a genuine 1:1 remake of the original but then it’d probably be like a 1tb game
@@fatfeline7164 Were you not saying that it would be too time consuming to implement? Did you mean too time consuming to play through? If that's the case, then it's probably not the reason they didn't do it.
5:37 actually we see the place blow in OG, but we get dialog later indicating the explosion was too big, not knowing how it got so big, and lots of guilt over how the bomb was made as it must have been what she did. We just weren't shown the Shinra side of it, but there was always the implication that something else was going on.
It was implied by Jessie that she was shocked her explosion was so strong and caused so much damage. However, either that was lost on translation or it was left for interpretation and remake just decided to show it directly instead of being ambiguous right off the bat. We might never know.
iirc once you get back to the hideout in the original you can talk to her and she makes a comment about not expecting the blast to be that big and that perhaps she made a mistake following the instructions. though every comparison between the two games ive seen seem to actually miss those line of dialoge.
I played the OG back when they did the Compilation campaign, then 100% when the Steam version was released. When I played Remake, I had my first "WTF?" at the start when Sephiroth is revealed so early, and I only realised this was not a Remake but a Multiverse Sequel when Cloud talks to OG Aerith in the garden.
The original was one of my first games on Playstation. It's one of my favorite games of all time. The characters, story, music, materia system, simply amazing.
I’m so glad I found this channel, I love your content 👌🏽 your comparison videos are some of your best! Keep throwing out these hits and you’ll be at 200k in no time brah 😬
I never played the original, so I enjoyed all the "padding" they added. All the new stuff and the grander scale to it all made the game feel like the experience my Dad, Uncle, and 2 Step Brothers would gush about when I was little. The fact that I had some 20+ years of the legend of Final Fantasy VII and no actual context for the gameplay made everything in Remake so good. When I beat Remake I did try to play the original and got al the way out of Midgar in maybe 5 hours. I imagine had I played it before the Remake I would be as annoyed by the extra stuff but I am enjoying both Remake and Rebirth with child-like wonder and only spoilers due to osmosis. Its a genuinely new experience for me and I'm glad I never ruined that for myself. The Sephiroth fight was a nice treat 4 years ago, Had the game just ended after the Jenova monster and them leaving Midgard I think hype for Rebirth wouldn't have carried for 4 whole years. At least for me. It was a nice fanservice moment for something to come. Essentially just a playable trailer. On a replay or if anyone tries to do a "Full" playthrough once every game is out I imagine it wont hold as much weight and feel almost gaudy right before switching to Rebirth.
I love your videos even though I never played or plan to play them your voice is therapeutic lol you could have a great career as a voice actor or a Podcaster or a radio dj personal I would love to see you do voice acting.
I had never played a FF game before remake, so I think I was able to appreciate all the extra stuff more because I never realised what was new and what wasn’t. Even then I was able to put it together that the game was deviating from the original story but actually making that a part of the plot. The only thing that really threw me off was Zack, that just comes out of nowhere.
I have a lot of qualms about the remake, but my biggest gripe was the plate and subsequent fight against the turks (originally just Reno). The plate support sequence in the original was tense. Battle music never stopped as you climbed up. You saw the avalanche gang and they gave a few farewell words, but the moment was always pressing and you couldn't stop to talk to them. You made it all the way to the top real quick because of that. There, you met Reno for the second time, whose only job is to trigger the pillar bomb. He effortlessly lands, goes past the gang, arms the bomb, and when Tifa says it has to be disarmed, he says he can't let them do that and the fight starts. Reno here isn't fighting to beat the team, he's just there to buy time. It's 3 VS 1 and he still handles the gang without too much problem, before zipping off. In the remake, the support sequence is a slog. Jesse and Wedge gives a touching farewell that just lasts forever. I understand they tried to flesh out their characters, but there are some hellishly pressing matters that need to be taken care of. The climb also has a lot of "hide from the helicopter sequence" that, again, break the momentum of the scene. Once you reach the top, you fight Reno, and then Rude in his helicopter, and you beat them both. They're down and nearly dead, but then Reno upgrades to cutscene Reno and, through the power of pulling stuff from his behind, manages to run past Cloud and crew (who got downgraded to their onomatopoeia spouting cutscene versions) to arm the bomb, dooming sector 7. The original has a stressful moment that lets you meet one of the recurring antagonist of the game, who barely has time for you. The remake has a stretched thin padded climb into a pretty impressive looking fight that makes the turks look equal/inferior to cloud and gang, only to get shafted by a cutscene.
Hello there, I have both the original, and the 2 - Parts of this Trilogy, and I can say both are worthy of their reception. While this upload is a good comparison Video, it was wrong about the Shinra Building infiltration. You do get the option to take either the Stairs or Elevator, they’re switched positions though instead of storming the front.
So about the changes: I really would've preferred if they had made changes to the story without including the whispers. As a narrative tool; they feel like the writers dropped the pen and took hold of a sledgehammer - then proceeds to whack the players over their heads; with about as much finesse and subtlety as the delivery: "THIS. IS. GOING. TO. BE. DIFFERENT!!!". Would've preferred a finer touch, a more natural way to make changes to the story. Besides, "fate" narratives always rub me the wrong way because it absolves the characters of all their actions since they were destined to make them, effectively removing any agency they had. But as you said: It's the first game in a trilogy so we'll have to wait and see how it wraps up. No denying it's ballsy.
"Besides, "fate" narratives always rub me the wrong way because it absolves the characters of all their actions since they were destined to make them, effectively removing any agency they had." Absolutely! Mostly wanted to point out that I enjoy your insight on that because I'm not sure how many people get that. It's just like "main character, you are important because the plot says so." The only good (sub)version of that trope is the Greek tragedy style of characters causing their fate by trying to prevent it.
It's kinda wild how FFVIIR can look both good and bad at the same time. Like animations and particle effects look really good but then you'll see a random barrel or low poly rando dude and wonder where the budget went. The lighting is also just all over the place.
FF7 Remake is pretty much a combination of a Retelling and Sequel/Reboot (Remake being a bit of an in-universe allusion to how the game is a remaking of events) We, as the player, are viewing it as a retelling. But in-universe, it's a Sequel/Reboot, Sephiroth seemingly being from the OG FF7 Timeline, and being the creator of this new reality (His attempts and success at altering things spurring The Whispers to awaken). So, with the Whispers defeated/now controlled by Sephiroth, the future as it was in the OG FF7 is not fixed, things can change, but now Sephiroth can seemingly use the Whispers to try to enforce the future *he* wants now. What that future is, it's unknown (as the game says, the Unkown Journey continues). But it is one where the Extinction of Humanity may not be guaranteed anymore as it was in the OG FF7 Timeline.
It's a sequel. Full stop. Seriously, the way Square Enix has managed to gaslight the entire planet into accepting that BS narrative you just uttered will never cease to amaze me.
Played the original in the seventh grade in 97. Remake and rebirth are fantastic. But you wont appreciate them without playing the original. To actually see certain scenes and hear certain lines put tears in my eyes.
Yes please to another version for rebirth!! Also nice dementor callouts. I never played FF7 but immediately thought of dementors when I first saw those ghostly things
The game itself was pretty inconsistent with the materia size, so it was pretty easy to get different ideas of how big they were. The original's cutscenes even showed holy as being the size of the marble, while the black materia was the size of a billiard ball. So pretty they can be whatever size lol
I enjoy the "remake" as it's own thing but I can't say I love it. I don't like the bait and switch marketing as I expected a remake to be just that, not what is essentially a TV live action remake that has the same characters but a completely different story.
should have called it FF7: Midgar. that way it would just seem like a modern remake of the first section of the game and the lame twists would stay a surprise.
For the flashes of the future scene, square enix actually used the Advent Children scenes, and if you look carefully, in the flashes for the future scene, cloud holds a different busterblade that has a different design compared to the remake
Before Remake came out, I decided to play the og FF7 but only by section as that's how the remade games were confirmed to be. I was spoiled about major plot stuff a long time ago so I had no issue learning where these new games would start and end. Strictly going by this criteria, I had a very different outlook on Remake compared to the half fanbase that said Remake got it wrong. While not making any outright accusations, I will at least say that og fans can be confusing at times. I can understand the real criticisms around padding because there is indeed quite a bit of it but the og Midgar has a lot of life to it aesthetically but not as a character. The Avalanche gang, save for Barret, were bland and nobodies who were written as fodder for shock value to raise story stakes, Shinra itself felt off with comically goofy yet cartoonishly evil villains and the general vibe went back and forth on a genuinely interesting story to a very decent to alright one. The quality didn't dip exactly at any point but for me, the game picked up immensely after leaving Midgar entirely. Then again, then entire story arc of Midgar is meant to be an introduction to a larger story as Shinra was more or less sidelined for Sephiroth at the last second. Not counting Hojo's importance to everything, I found Midgar to be an entertaining yet not all that unique start to FF7 in retrospect. Remake made Midgar feel like a real place with real people. People who mattered and weren't just funny NPC's to talk to. It had a lot of padding for sure but not all of it was bad or even meaningless. I found myself seeing what was different but not really caring because I liked Midgar conceptually but you don't spend as much time in it as one would think in the og(not until much later that is). Remake fleshed out a lot of areas that made the whole place feel like it had a greater story to tell from everyone in it. A few places certainly didn't stick the landing but what I got from Remake blew the og out of the water by a long shot. I understand the Whispers are also a point of contention but I never felt they were invasive, moreso just intriguing because they actively showed up during major deviations of the og. They could've been utilized better but they started to feel integral after awhile, even with the crazy boss fight towards the end. Giving Sephiroth more of a role to play is also something I vibe with because the game doesn't shy away from switching villains like the og but rather shares them. Shinra is very much threatening in the Remake and that never once lets up even when you start seeing visions of Sephiroth clearly torturing Cloud mentally and emotionally. This balance of factions and character interactions, to me, makes Remake far better than the og Midgar. Overall, I can't and won't stand on the nostalgia argument for why people dislike or like Remake. I think objectively, they're both stellar games despite their issues. Rebirth will likely live up to the hype as I am currently going through the og version and having a blast. I'm very much looking forward to what's been redone and added, especially seeing as how the demo really does it's job of showing you what it's all about. Honestly, I recommend you play any of these games, altogether or otherwise because these are gaming history and should be experienced
Yup. He calls the new stuff "filler" as if most of it wasn't good. Simply the extra time you get with all the characters does a *lot* to make you care about them and everything going on in the game. This was my first FF game, so even though I inevitably knew all the spoilers from OG FFVII beforehand, I had no attachment to it, so I was able to enjoy Remake for what it was instead of what I wanted it to be. Then I went back and started playing the PS1 version.
“Giving Sephiroth more of a role to play” except it’s not lol, it’s taking everything about his whole character away, he’s supposed to be revealed later as he heavily impacts the plot… your literally ruining the villain by showing him too early, there’s many people who have broken down why this is terrible writing, you think you know what your talking about but you don’t…
I loved the chapter where you visit Jessie's parents. It was great to flesh out the rest of Avalanche more and it also gave us something that was really lacking in the original, a glimpse of life above the plate. Honestly, I wish Remake gave us more of that.
I am very disappointed they decided to go the route they took with the game instead of giving the fans the updated remake we had been asking for over the years. This game would have been perfect if they'd just left out all of the fate and time stuff that they unnecessarily added to the story. Then, they got my hopes up again with Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis only for that to end in disappointment as well. The original Final Fantasy VII is my favorite game ever. It gave me so many fond memories and emotional experiences and actually helped mold many of my deeply held personal beliefs and values, as well as my overall worldview. So, I had been hoping and looking forward to reexperiencing it all again someday, upgraded for current gen consoles. Now, I know it'll never happen.
I agree with you. The graphics and execution of some of the core plot were great in the remake. For me personally, my favourite part of the original game was always leaving midgar and having the whole world open up. So in that respect, Remake was a bit of disappointment as it padded out a lot of content.
I played the OG on switch bc it had cheat codes like x3 speed and I didn’t want to waste so many hours on it just to get to Remake+Rebirth, which are over 100-150 hours combined. Gotta say I liked it but honestly as an early 2000s baby I felt like a play through isn’t necessary and it’s better to just watch a play through online. The game is just too damn old and archaic in its controls and graphics and even some of its writing at times. But I loved seeing how older games had to function due to limitations and comparing that to what we have now. It’s always fascinating to see how much graphics changed back then, and how rapidly they changed to (FFX and FFVII are only about 4 years apart)! I also fell in love with the score. It’s honestly the one part of the experience that aged the best.
After playing Remake I of course had to go back and play the original again and wow..after 8 or 9 years away from that game you really forget just how short the Midgar portion actually is 😅 Personally I had very similar feelings on Remake. Overall very positive. They really captured the nostalgia and got the tone right for just about all of it. They obviously took a lot of pride and care in recreating it which I really appreciate. These are really my only complaints: ● Barret is practically spot-on character wise while Yuffie is miles away from her original self (she's meant to be a wise cracking goblin whose only goal is to rob you. Here she's a generic anime teen with dreams of saving the world) ● Cloud is very close but they do rush through his "indifferent" phase. He gets sentimental a bit too fast in Remake ● Wish the game wasn't so linear. One of my favorite things in FF7 was exploring the world and finding unique weapons, materias, or items hidden in weird locations off the beaten path. In Remake there really isn't any of that. It's all just handed to you along the way ● Fuck Chadley ● Wish there weren't so many divergences from the original story. Especially the Barret death fake-out and Sephiroth fight at the end. Feels pretty disjointed from the core story Other than that, absolutely magnificent job. Found myself getting lost in it and the nostalgia it brings. Just being transported back to my early teens sitting in front of that dusty box TV for a few hours is well worth the asking price. Bravo guys. Sincerely, bravo
After watching this im glad i played the remake first and then played the original. I was able to fully enjoy both without noticing the padding in the remake
How to forget the time when Sephiroth came to Midgar and meteored all over the place and Aerith was like 'no, i'll cast holy using Shinra president's body as ahost'. Man... those times...
The original is so special to me. Experiencing it for the first time in the 90's was magical. Recent playthroughs have also been a blast. The game has aged surprisingly well. Some of the mini games haven't aged well, but they are a relatively small part of the game so aren't a big deal. The "Remake" was the most painful gaming experience of my life and it's easily the worst game I have ever played. The combat is boring and repetitive as you can slash and dodge your way through most of the battles. The exploration is repetitive and boring because modern Square don't know how to design levels. The side quests are pointless, boring filler that are big waste of time. The look and atmosphere of Midgar is a mixed bag, some places feel unrecognisable due to odd lighting choices or having an overall different design (For example Wall Market looks like a completely different place). The voice acting is a mixed bag. The main cast are good but side characters sound unauthentic and take me out of the game. The story changes are jarring and utterly bizarre because the "Remake" is essentially a sequel that takes place in an alternate timeline, as opposed to a remake of the original. People new to the series would not only be lost regarding some of the events that are unfolding, but some of the original story elements are outright spoiled for them! A major plot twist from later on in the original game is hinted at very early on in the "Remake" and I have no way to comprehend why the hell they would feel the need to do that, as it benefits nobody.
Worst game you've ever played? Most painful gaming experience of your life? Come on, stop bullshitting lol With that mindset, you'd consider the original FF7 repetitive because you're just using your most strongest move over and over and getting into 29 random encounters to get to a chest across the room.
In the OG, the part where you wake up in the Shinra building with the doors unlocked, creepy music, blood all over the floor, was always scary as heck to me. Remake did not keep the same vibe.
The thing about FFVII Remake is that it's not a remake. Its subtitle is "Remake", just like the second part's subtitle is "Rebirth". Was this done on purpose to mislead people? You can bet your ass on it. The game keeps showing you things that weren't there in the original and taking away the sense of familiarity you have while playing.
@@AnAverageGoblinwhat do you expect when it’s nomura who’s been directing since 2005 the writing has gone downhill. And Sakaguchi gone your never going to get true ff games. The gold standard of never creating a sequel of a game or a true fleshed out story with no bs
Early 3D models are never really going to age well, but man, those environments still look beautiful. Stuff like this makes me wonder if all the graphical fidelity we get now is making things too visually busy that you get the yellow paint problem. IE what's interactable and what isn't is not immediately or intuitively knowable by the player without the devs assuming the lowest common denominator is the player. Also known as a games journalist.
Idk if I should wait until all three remakes come out it but those remake it’s crazy expensive and it a couple years old it’s almost $100 where in my currency
I do like Remake, but I will say, yeah, it's padded. But honestly I feel it expands a lot on the dungeons in a fun way. But ultimately it's a companion to FF7 rather than a replacement or a true Remake
Im about 20 hours into the original atm. Loving it. I wanna do this so I can appreciate the new ones when I inevitably plau them. Been watching my roommate play Remake while I play the old on my Switch. Im really seeing why FF7 has the accolades it has. Its well earned.
In my opinion, the part where Sephiroth tries to kill Barrett is testing the Whispers' limits. Sephiroth already knows about the Whispers and that the story is told the same way over and over and he always loses. Now he was testing what the limits of whispers were, so he appears before the party, tries to kill Barrett, and in my opinion tricks the party by entering the “void” before the final battle. By destroying the Whispers the possibilities are open and it may even be that Aerith does not die.
The problem with basing your reviews on other people's playthrough videos rather than playing the game yourself will always lead to glaring gaps in the reviewers knowledge, such as the fact that you do have a choice of using stairs or a lift in order to infiltrate the Shinra building where the person you watched clearly went for the stairs so you just assumed that was a fixed option. And yes of course the game is going to feel stretched and padded out if you are watching someone else play it, it's never going to be as fun watching someone play a game VS playing a game yourself. Personally, I played the game six times before Rebirth was released and I wouldn't change a thing.
The original is for a different kind of gamer. I no longer actively detest the remake franchise because I have no reason to. To put it bluntly: Square Enix is a completely different company from Squaresoft with completely different target demographics and a completely different business model. As such they could not simply make the same game but upgraded in every way - the differences are key to monetizing the fandom and maintaining continuous revenue through other sources such as merchandise, spinoff games and advertising deals with other companies. I'm not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, since anyone can spend their money how they wish, it's simply a statement - FF7 was a breakthrough hit that took the world by storm and FF7R was carefully crafted to be the centre of a franchise. I'm not the kind of gamer who gets into fandoms, so it's just not my kind of game. You like it? Cool, enjoy. We good.
you forgot to mention there is still a measure of choice when entering the shinra building, you can choose the elevators where you have to fight or you can walk up the stairs which take forever to reach the top
Absolutely agree that Remake has too much filler. It's slowed down so much, it drags at times. I can see your Rebirth video in the recommendations, but I'm currently playing through it so don't want to watch it yet (I'm going slow because FFXIV has grabbed me by the throat again). From what I've seen of Rebirth though, it feels like the pacing issue has been resolved. I'm currently in the Junon region, and the Mythril Mines felt appropriately sized as a transition chapter, unlike the journey to reactor 5, and the sewers and graveyard in Remake.
I like Remake, it does a lot right and the only points against it are too much unnecessary filler, too much railroading, too many navigation sections like going through a small space to hide a loading screen and the pacing drags. I don't have the childhood attachment to FF7 a lot of people in my age group have since I didn't grow up with it but I played it as an adult about a decade ago to see what all the hype was about and I definitely saw why its considered one of the greats. If they nail Rebirth, chances are high they won't f*ck up part 3.
17:15 also, the sequence leading up to this showdown, with Cloud flying down to meet Sephiroth and the quick cuts between one another is basically a shot-for-shot remake of the very end of the original game where you have that final showdown with a shirtless Sephiroth and unleash your Omnislash limit on him.... but I guess since he doesn't have that limit break at this point of the story maybe that's why he barely does anything to Seph in this version.
The only "padding" I felt was out of place was the second trip to the sewers. It was a bit of a drag. All the side quests, while they can be considered padding are optional. There is even incentive to skip them to get the trophies for Aerith's different dresses.
It's been a while since I played the "remake", so correct me if I'm wrong, but it's actually a sequel. Sephiroth and Aerith both know what happened in the original game. Plus, we have the "dementors" trying to set things back to the original. It should be called, Final Fantasy VII Partially Altered Rethread
As someone who has played the OG many times, I can definitively say I prefer the Remake. Everything is more fleshed out and interactive. The only downside is that it is heavily dependent on you having played the OG. However, having finished played Rebirth now, and after digging through some of the details in that game, it's obvious to me now that to truly appreciate what they're planning with Remake, you have to have knowledge of the previous game, and even of the entire compilation, including Advent Childre, Dirge of Cerberus, and Crisis Core. Again, it's sort of unfortunate that we have to go through all that, but given how big Remake is and where I bet they're going, it'll all be worth it in the end.
FF7 is an excellent game, but an awful remake. The gameplay, graphics and character writing are great, but the padding and nonsensical changes to the story are what ruin it for me. The retcon ghosts feel out of place and their involvement in the story only damage it and took away character moments. Sephiroth is victim of his own fame and was overused in the part of the story where he had no business to be in (one or two haunting flashbacks / visions are good, but he was everywhere and took away from moments like meeting Aerith). FF7 remake is an excellent game, but everytime I play it I can't shake off the lingering smell of crap that is the overall story.
A key point that casuals miss about the Sephiroth fight at the end of FF7 Remake is that in the original game, this is a fight we just never got. Cloud and the party never fight Sephiroth, they only fight his God forms at the very end of the game. So this battle, was a LONG time (23 years) coming and a gift to the fanbase. You're just memeing here for people who dont know any better
Interesting, you dont seem to be the biggest fan of the changes made to the game in terms of story/ narration and I understand why, i dont necessarily agree with everything just being pointless filler thrown in. To me, most of whats added give more depth to the characters and makes them feel more "human" than in the OG, which, depending on when/ what version you've played, could be the one with the bad translations, typos and general errors. Im interested to see how you feel about rebirth after weve had time to digest its story, please keep up the interesting content!
I dislike that Sephiroth shows up so early & often. He was built up so well off-screen in the original that when you finally encounter him he feels like this force of nature.
My Top 3 All-Time Favorite FF Girls 1. Tifa Lockhart (FF7) 2. Yuna (FFX) 3. Lulu (FFX) It’s Yuna from FFX and not from X-2 where she turned into a J-pop singer. 😂 I like Yuna’s virgin innocence from FFX. Tifa and Lulu have the big knockers. I’ve always liked Tifa’s personality more than Aerith (or Aeris) because I felt she always cared for Cloud and she always stood up for him. But I do like Aerith and hope this remake does remove her death scene working similar to a multiverse and an alternate timeline like Star Trek 2009. Lulu is my “Black Magic Woman” like that Santana song. Lulu is like that hot goth chick in high school who got hotter as she got older. She’s always acted mature well beyond her years. She’s listed to be only the age of 22 in FFX but she acts like some hot MILF in her late 20s to 30s. Or think Joan in the TV series, Mad Men. I grew to enjoy Yuna more over Lulu when beating FFX a second time on my cousin’s Vita OLED. Her summons are the most important to me when defeating Sin. My final party for the end of FF7 & FF10 FF7 - Cloud (duh) Cid Yuffie FF10 - Yuna Auron Wakka Even though Yuffie isn’t one of my favorite characters and I hated her initially back in 1997 for stealing my Materia, I grew to enjoy using her after beating FF7 a third time on my modded PSP about 13 years ago. Apply her with 4X cut / critical hit and you’ll get 9999 every time. And her speed for turn-based fights and her level 3 Doom of the Living limit break kicks ass! For character, it’s Tifa. For player usage, it’s Yuffie. Now in FF10, Yuna is for character and for player usage. While Lulu is the stronger of the two girls during the first half of the game, once Yuna gets all her summons (or aeons), she’s the most powerful character in your party at the end of the game. Yuna’s class party is summoner and that’s what she is. Tifa is a regarded a monk. Aerith is a white mage. Lulu is a black mage like Vivi. While I do love Final Fantasy X and feel like it’s the last great FF game and the last time Hironobu Sakaguchi helped develop a FF game, I still do prefer Final Fantasy VII more. FFX is my favorite PS2 game of all-time but FF7 is my favorite video game, period. More memorable characters, gameplay, and music. Better story and tons of fun mini games in the Gold Saucer. I hope we get to buy the villa again in Costa del Sol which is named after a real region in Spain. I hope we can play volleyball like in Dead or Alive Xtreme and someone does a nude patch for Tifa and Aerith. I love my modded Vita for having a nude patch for Dead or Alive Extreme 3. All girls topless and Brazilian waxed. Tifa or Aerith is like asking Ginger or Mary Ann? Most Gilligan’s Island fans actually pick Mary Ann, but for this case, Tifa is Ginger AND Mary Ann. She has sex appeal and she’s wife material. Imagine getting the sweetness of Olivia Rodrigo or Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel) mixed with Alexandra Daddario or Sydney Sweeney’s huge rack and that’s Tifa.
The guy in the Sector 5 slums pipe is actually a Sephiroth clone, after googling it because I was shocked it wasn't in the remake its probably because they added way more of these clones hobbling around, but it would've been cool if it was some random clone who's degradation just started and you see the shift between a normal person and being a degraded clone, although I expect they're waiting to show something like that with Cloud or something
Is it filler/padding, or is it the world that Square wanted to show us back in the original that they simply didn't have the time and resources to show us? It reminds me of Lord of the Rings. For the longest time it just wasn't realistically possible to make a decent adaptation of it to cinema because of the sheer scale and nature of the world he created and the story he told. Until New Line and Peter Jackson came along with all the technology to make it work.
Having never played the original FF7, I just took my time with Remake and enjoyed every minute of it. I can see how a lot of the new additions can be considered padding, though. And yeah the ending was a pretty big mindfuck, but I thought the Sephiroth boss fight was a lot of fun and the remix of One-Winged Angel was incredible.
FF7 Original cannot be beated. The remake is just a graphic beauty, but shallow inside. Plus they didn't respected the source material for.. Not so much interesting choices.
as someone who started with FF8 and find myself difficult to play 7 (due to generational graphic differences), i always heard the FF7 being one of the best FF out there. the remake/rebirth what rewhatever trilogy allows me to thoroughly enjoy the game. i do find the rebirth open world concept is a bit ... not what i expect, and i personally thing that took a lot away from story driven games like FF. I do think, the FF7 remake strike the perfect balance between tight story line, and just enough freedom to explore around without taking the focus away from the story (like the ff7 rebirth, i can totally let go of the entire open world concept until the last moment before the game ends). i do find it is disappointing knowing that majority delay of the part 2 is probably caused by the openworld itself, which isn't even the focus of FF7.
Both versions are just so special to me. I love the modern take on the remake but I love the nostalgic feeling of playing the original. Like I just can't pick a favourite.
Honestly I don’t understand the hate this got. Even accounting for the Sephiroth battle at the end, and the whispers throughout, remake was pretty spot on to the original midgar section. Yeah, there’s a bunch of extra stuff attached to it, but honestly, I was happy to spend more time in one of my favorite worlds. Even adding in rebirth, the changes don’t bother me, as it treats itself more like a sequel than it does a remake, and the game always acknowledges the original game as the official canon, and presents itself as an alternate timeline. Had the game made significant changes, ignored the original, sam and asserted itself as the new canon, I’d be a lot more miffed about the changes.
I haven't played the remake since I don't have a PS4 or PS5 but I find it fascinating how Square-Enix expanded the game compared to the original. Speaking about the original game, I was around 4 when FFVII and I didn't actually play it until I was in my teens, sadly I got a pirated copy from the European Spanish translation of the game, which I thought it would be great since the game was translated, but that translation is awful, filled with typos and errors, but for some reasons Aerith and Sephiroth are still referred as Aeris and Sefirot in modern Spanish translations to this day. It took me years to actually beat the game, but since the I finished the entire game three times and mamaged to obtain all the characters' final Limit Breaks. Still, while FFVII is not my favorite game in the seires, I can understand why it had such an impact, I just hope that Rebirth and the final game in the remake project will satisfy long-time fans. I also hope that Square will remake some other FF games in the future, but not like they did with VII
honestly... for me, a lot of hte additions (i am not talking about the STORY CHANGES, just the added stuff) really ruined the story flow. FOr me, the only good addition was the whole stuff with Jessie. The rest, for me, really screwed with the games pacing. Parts that were short in the original get turned into major dungeons... you get an additional return to the sewers for a character that is... not all that likeable... to get an upgrade to your grappling hook... For me, it just feels like they were desperate to stretch the run time of hte game to something they could charge full price to. Having 2 major dungeons (+ the new lab dungeons) around the plate fall part, or how long the finale took... it just, imho, got stretched for too long. Honestly, if they wanted to stretch it out, i'd ahve decompressed the Midgar part from a few days to, maybe, two weeks. Issue , of course, is that this would'Ve delayed meeting Aerith. But, over all, i think putting additional story time between Reactor 1 and 2 would have made more sense than stretching the stretch between Reactor 2 and Shinra HQ. Maybe you could've had Cloud explore Midgar a little and do odd jobs etc.
I came to the comment section specifically to say this exact same thing. I was so happy they kept the choice. Both are still great options.
Remake very much assumes you've played the original game and i think you can't really appreciate the changes and little details without playing the original, it also gives away some of the twists of the original game early that i say takes away from them a bit. both are great games and i recommend both of them.
or you played the original and dislike the changes because you expected the same story in more grand and modern.
"REMAKE" is just a subtitle of the game. It's actually a pseudo-sequel, since as you said, game expects you to have prior knowledge of the original plot (including spin offs like Crisis Core)
@DravenxEyeless yeah pretty much any I understand how that can be a point of criticism of the game because it's not really a true remake
"Which is just a fancy way of saying the boss now has a weakspot - On it's arse."
The deadpan delivery kills me.
You’ve never fought Sephiroth in any of the games. Only Jenova. Sephiroth has been in the North Crater and the livestream the entire time. His connection to the livestream allows Jenova to move freely.
What about Crisis Core?
@@Tvdvidro till he gets yeeted into the nibelhiem reactor its the real deal.
@@Tvdvidroin crisis core that is the real Seph. It’s after crisis core when seph falls into the reactor that you stop (directly) interacting with him
I mean, you do at the end of the game. That’s definitely Sephiroth in the final fight not Jenova.
I'm in my 30's, and FF7 is still the best piece of entertainment I've ever experienced.
The original game is a masterpiece. I don't like the combat, or the mechanics. But, the story and the original soundtrack is amazing.
Same, just the best.
I am 42 and just recently played Remake and am now playing Rebirth. Never played the original, but will soon. For me Final Fantasy 7 is what the original Star Wars is for some; my favorite world, favorite characters, and favorite piece of entertainment ever/

@@15thobserver I'm in my 30s, I played it over 20 years ago plus multiple times on DS lmao. But everyone should, yes.
Just finished playing Remake with my fiancee who's never played the original. We loved it!
no i knew how big materia was because it looks like baseball sized in the original, but also because they’re shown at size in advent children, which came

Especially annoying like in the church when you meet Aerith the first time they taunt you with a materia right there and you're blocked from getting it, like it's right there let me have the shiny 😂
These are just nitpicks for the most part though I do hope Rebirth makes the side stuff more interesting like the card game, that looks like fun and will hit the same notes Gwent did for me in Witcher 3.
I agree. Padding is too negative a term for what it is. Everything Remake does either
1. Expands the narrative
2. Teaches the player a game mechanic or provides them a fun challenge with a meaningful reward
3. Helps the pacing of the game by giving the player things to do other than watch cutscenes
4. Usually (though not always haha) all 3
I also think the video was spot on when he mentioned how clouds expression mimic'd the players, but that's totally on purpose.
Minority? You are prime consoomer.
@@dansmith16idiot
I love it too, even if I didn't care for a few things in it.
It's awesome. Don't let other's opinions affect what you personally enjoy.
If i'm not mistaken, I believe they intended to implement this, but then realized it would be absolutely way to time consuming.
@@fatfeline7164 How so? Do they not implement those other parts of the mansion in the remake?
@@anon_y_mousse huh?
0:10 The 2012 remake?
Looks like he cut it out of the video now.
OG Aerith in the garden?
According to Yoshinori Kitase it’s a reimagining of the first game, not a sequel.
It's called a reimagining.
The original was one of my first games on Playstation. It's one of my favorite games of all time. The characters, story, music, materia system, simply amazing.

In the remake you can still
Choose stairs or elevator in the Shinra building
I had never played a FF game before remake, so I think I was able to appreciate all the extra stuff more because I never realised what was new and what wasn’t. Even then I was able to put it together that the game was deviating from the original story but actually making that a part of the plot.
The only thing that really threw me off was Zack, that just comes out of nowhere.
I just finished it and i totally agree. The moment he appearedi searched for him for a few minutes.
You can take the elevator in the remake tho.
I've played this game 6 times and I just did it for the 1st time last month,it actually had funny scenes lol.i hate the steps noe
Great, now I have to play the remake, I guess. Looks good.
Awesome Video as always!
I have both the original and the remake.
I have The Original(Smartphone Version).
Good for you!

"Besides, "fate" narratives always rub me the wrong way because it absolves the characters of all their actions since they were destined to make them, effectively removing any agency they had."
Absolutely!
Mostly wanted to point out that I enjoy your insight on that because I'm not sure how many people get that.
It's just like "main character, you are important because the plot says so."
The only good (sub)version of that trope is the Greek tragedy style of characters causing their fate by trying to prevent it.
It's a good thing that in rebirth whispers are completely absent (as far as I know, I haven't beaten it yet.)
@@CosmicWatermeln😐
But isn't the point of the whispers that the characters reject their fate?
Isn't that them having agency?
It's a shame that the NES chinese bootleg version isn't mentioned
It's kinda wild how FFVIIR can look both good and bad at the same time. Like animations and particle effects look really good but then you'll see a random barrel or low poly rando dude and wonder where the budget went. The lighting is also just all over the place.
FF7 Remake is pretty much a combination of a Retelling and Sequel/Reboot (Remake being a bit of an in-universe allusion to how the game is a remaking of events)
We, as the player, are viewing it as a retelling.

It's called a reimagining.
FF7: Netflix adaptation.
It would have been a perfect name.@@MASJYT
should have called it FF7: Midgar. that way it would just seem like a modern remake of the first section of the game and the lame twists would stay a surprise.
It's called a reimagining.
@@BalboaBaggins it was released and advertised as Remake mr baggins
Can you please make a video about final fantasy7 remake part 2.
Now this guy explained it perfectly
“Giving Sephiroth more of a role to play” except it’s not lol, it’s taking everything about his whole character away, he’s supposed to be revealed later as he heavily impacts the plot… your literally ruining the villain by showing him too early, there’s many people who have broken down why this is terrible writing, you think you know what your talking about but you don’t…
@@castaway__7235He knows what he’s talking about. He’s not “supposed” to do anything. Your opinion isn’t fact. Understand that
@@MilClipz bro the writing is bad. That’s not an opinion that’s a fact
I loved the chapter where you visit Jessie's parents. It was great to flesh out the rest of Avalanche more and it also gave us something that was really lacking in the original, a glimpse of life above the plate. Honestly, I wish Remake gave us more of that.
I appreciate how pretty the characters are in the remake, but I prefer turn-based fights in Final Fantasy. Also, I don't like dance minigames.
Now, I know it'll never happen.
the filler BS completely ruined the experience for me. Let's not talk about ALL the other garbage decisions they made.
Has anyone seen the trailer of Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection?
I had, I'm also excited as well!!!
After playing Remake I of course had to go back and play the original again and wow..after 8 or 9 years away from that game you really forget just how short the Midgar portion actually is 😅
Personally I had very similar feelings on Remake. Overall very positive. They really captured the nostalgia and got the tone right for just about all of it. They obviously took a lot of pride and care in recreating it which I really appreciate. These are really my only complaints:
● Barret is practically spot-on character wise while Yuffie is miles away from her original self (she's meant to be a wise cracking goblin whose only goal is to rob you. Here she's a generic anime teen with dreams of saving the world)
● Cloud is very close but they do rush through his "indifferent" phase. He gets sentimental a bit too fast in Remake
● Wish the game wasn't so linear. One of my favorite things in FF7 was exploring the world and finding unique weapons, materias, or items hidden in weird locations off the beaten path. In Remake there really isn't any of that. It's all just handed to you along the way
● Fuck Chadley
● Wish there weren't so many divergences from the original story. Especially the Barret death fake-out and Sephiroth fight at the end. Feels pretty disjointed from the core story
Other than that, absolutely magnificent job. Found myself getting lost in it and the nostalgia it brings. Just being transported back to my early teens sitting in front of that dusty box TV for a few hours is well worth the asking price. Bravo guys. Sincerely, bravo
I placed remake before the OG and even I got tired of the filler stuff and could tell that is what it was.
After watching this im glad i played the remake first and then played the original. I was able to fully enjoy both without noticing the padding in the remake
Be honest tho, playing the original afterwards felt far more comfortable without having to do all the padded stuff over again
How to forget the time when Sephiroth came to Midgar and meteored all over the place and Aerith was like 'no, i'll cast holy using Shinra president's body as ahost'. Man... those times...
The Final Fantasy 7 Remake is basically how you remembered the original while under the influence of magic mushrooms.
Sounds on point! The changes are I, despite being a VII superfan, am still not interested in anything other than some of the merch.
Come on, stop bullshitting lol
With that mindset, you'd consider the original FF7 repetitive because you're just using your most strongest move over and over and getting into 29 random encounters to get to a chest across the room.
I absolutely understand where you're coming from. I was really disappointed too.
It was done on purpose people FF7 fanboys cried for a remake for years and let themselves get lied to. SQ has never been an honest company
@@AnAverageGoblinwhat do you expect when it’s nomura who’s been directing since 2005 the writing has gone downhill. And Sakaguchi gone your never going to get true ff games. The gold standard of never creating a sequel of a game or a true fleshed out story with no bs
“Although it takes about forty more hours to get there 'cos it's padded like an A-cup on school picture day”

I'd love to see this same type of video but with FF7 rebirth
Im about 20 hours into the original atm. Loving it. I wanna do this so I can appreciate the new ones when I inevitably plau them. Been watching my roommate play Remake while I play the old on my Switch. Im really seeing why FF7 has the accolades it has. Its well earned.

13:42 that was definitely my favorite part in all of the remake, the scenary is just breathtaking.
Correction, Biggs doesn't die instead he lives and has a role in Rebirth
He died like Zack did…just not in our timeline lol
When you said 2012 Remake, i had to do a "hol up" and remember how old I am 😅
Mate you had me
The problem with basing your reviews on other people's playthrough videos rather than playing the game yourself will always lead to glaring gaps in the reviewers knowledge, such as the fact that you do have a choice of using stairs or a lift in order to infiltrate the Shinra building where the person you watched clearly went for the stairs so you just assumed that was a fixed option. And yes of course the game is going to feel stretched and padded out if you are watching someone else play it, it's never going to be as fun watching someone play a game VS playing a game yourself. Personally, I played the game six times before Rebirth was released and I wouldn't change a thing.
Thank you!
Part 2 whould be nice :)
You read my Mind creating this video! Thanks Flandrew!
Personally, couldn't put the Remake down after starting, they did an amazing job with it! Can't wait to continue the journey in Rebirth!
You're correct. The "dementors" are done and dusted though no more fate shenanigans. "all according to keikaku"- Sephiroth, probably.
It's pure fanon.
I think thats the joke.
Its no Remake. "REMAKE" is a Title
FF7 remake is an excellent game, but everytime I play it I can't shake off the lingering smell of crap that is the overall story.
the retcon ghosts exist for the genuinely retarded idea of a multiverse sequel. and so SQ can get away with lying to their brain dead fanboys.
You're just memeing here for people who dont know any better
heard all the good things about the original, never tried it. played the remake, i'm very impressed by the settings and the story
I doubt they can top the final fight even with new hardware they cant top OGs Supernova. Ill be mad if they shorten how long it takes.
You thought the materia were small? Did you not see them slotted into the Buster Sword on art?
I also thought they were small until I saw Yuffie hold one
I like Remake but modern FFVII has become so weebed out. I prefer a lot of the pacing/storytelling/charm of the original.
Look how many years have passed and how technology changed our lives ill take it for what it is I love them both (original is way better though)
Yes, if you could compare the overworld section of FF7 to Rebirth, that would be awesome.
My Top 3 All-Time Favorite FF Girls
1. Tifa Lockhart (FF7)
2. Yuna (FFX)
3. Lulu (FFX)
It’s Yuna from FFX and not from X-2 where she turned into a J-pop singer.
My final party for the end of FF7 & FF10
FF7 -
Cloud (duh)
Cid
Yuffie
FF10 -
Yuna
Auron
Wakka
Even though Yuffie isn’t one of my favorite characters and I hated her initially back in 1997 for stealing my Materia, I grew to enjoy using her after beating FF7 a third time on my modded PSP about 13 years ago.
I just finished it and was quite dissapointed... WAY TOO MUCH FLUFF. And the ending made no sense whatsoever.
FF7 Original cannot be beated. The remake is just a graphic beauty, but shallow inside. Plus they didn't respected the source material for.. Not so much interesting choices.
Love how you skip the train graveyard
as someone who started with FF8 and find myself difficult to play 7 (due to generational graphic differences), i always heard the FF7 being one of the best FF out there.
the remake/rebirth what rewhatever trilogy allows me to thoroughly enjoy the game. i do find the rebirth open world concept is a bit ... not what i expect, and i personally thing that took a lot away from story driven games like FF.
Here to say Remake hit so much harder than Rebirth
Glad I'm not the only one annoyed by the padding.I also got tired of the slow scripted moments that force you to move slowly and listen to people talk
The original will always and forever be the best. Might start a replay on it this week! Haven't played thru it since it came out.
Though I like the JRPG but I'd the way they adapted FF7 remake with modern RPG, it looka like you're really roleplaying in real time
Both versions are just so special to me.
