@Aaron9 Okay, picture this for a second, a hybrid between the original combat system, FF13's non-static combat positioning and the area affects/combo attacks from Chrono Trigger, ATB system is fine. I'd also consider adding turn based repositioning along the lines of Trails of Cold Steel 'move' command. You're right I haven't played it but I've watched more than enough footage/reviews/livestream plays to come to the conclusion I dislike it. I honestly feel that "it's linear" is just not a valid criticism. Some of the greatest games of all time are linear. There's just a difference between good linearity and bad linearity.
I work in an "essential" job environment but somehow was able to convice my boss to give me the week of april 13 to 20th off. I think I know how ill be spending my free time!
@5pointgo Game length is honestly subjective and depends on how much you like the busywork/sidequests that can extend it. Being technically able to last longer doesn't matter if it's not enjoyable to the people only getting thirty hours. That being said, I'm hoping it lasts longer for me.
@5pointgo I absolutely don't share your enthusiasm for sidequests. Maybe in an actual role-playing game, but not in a shorthand rpg. A lot of the latter have boring fetch quests without much consequence, and finding overpowered secret items tends to be something I reserve to future playthroughs. Not trying to shame anyone who likes being overpowered for their first playthrough, it just isn't fun for me.
You could really tell the devs cared about this one. I felt the emotions and while it's not perfect this game is just so good and I loved every second of it.
I completely agree. This game reinvented the wheel in such a way that it blew me away and gave me a new and deeper appreciation of the game than the original gave me. My only complaints are the side quests and quest tracking. Not to mention a certain aspect in the fighting that whom ever you controlled the enemy would blitz and cheese you.
18:05 - The camera battle mechanics problem you're having can be remedied by locking onto enemies with R3, as well as increasing the in-battle field of view in the Settings.
I can't help but wonder how they're going to pull off the absolute pacing and narrative nightmare that is the rest of the game after you get out of Midgar. If they can pull it off it will be an insane feat. I'm almost skeptical we'll even get subsequent games in the series
I've just finished the original on Switch and I can't even start to imagine how they're going to remake this game in its entirety with these graphics. Will be an amazing accomplishment
18:15 "since enemies target whoever you are controlling" I hope the shift isn't too extreme, but it might be interesting to add enemy movement manipulation to your tactics
Imagine if Midgar was cyberpunk 2077 style open world, where you could travel between sectors with train etc.. man I would have seriously looked at the view all day
I'll be getting it on Series X next year. As well. Currently playing Kingdom Hearts 3 on Xbox Gamepass. Then will play Nier Automata on Game pass as well.
I... think there has to be more than two other parts, unless they're _considerably_ longer. Midgar is, like, the first third of the first disc. Sure, disc three is the last dungeon and a buncha sidequests but there's still a huge amount of disc 1 and, even if it's a bit shorter, all of disc 2. With as much as the expanded Midgar, they'd have to be blasting past stuff or massively expanding the next parts for only two to be needed.
The great thing about the episodic nature of the series, is that Square can take any criticisms on board for this game and iron them out as the follow-ups are released.
That and they can focus on each segments new game systems. Open world, airship navigation, side quests, endgame etc etc. Everything gets more attention and time. I wouldn't even call it an episode. This is more like FF13 that had two follow up releases.
@@gooberglop8461 I don't think you can compare Valve and SE. One company has financially motivated to release games and the other one can lay back and release nothing. Valve stopped being a game developer around the time of the Orange Box and Steam gaining momentum. I think its shameless how they've behaved in the gaming sphere for years now and I found the VR release to be an immense slap in the face for any normal consumer that might have loved HL. Two totally different situations here.
@@mikev8746 Squeenix is still developing but they are mostly a publisher now and a large portion of their efforts go into publishing games from other companies as well. I feel like the burnout from episodic developing is real and seeing a game deteriorate over time rather then improve is a real possibility. Plus they chose a horrible genre to do this too, JRPG's are massive, long adventures and waiting 1-2 years at best between parts is going to feel horrible.
@@gooberglop8461 Thats a good and fair point you're making. I'm currently more on the positive side but who knows how I will look at it when time progresses. There's definitely also a chance it will just get worse with ever release as Square fumbles near the finish line. The first outing though made a good impression for me. When it comes to JRPG's I think it's a mix. Compared to every other genre I think these games have the most the gain and lose when it comes to possible remakes. I'm certain we wont get the next part for 2-4 years at best so the wait will suck. But from my experience the eventual pay off will be worth it. Once you have everything in your hands a decade from now there's simply more value in having 3 parts. You will truly be able to play it from beginning to end with the scope the original had. Absolutely no modern game has offered that much, even games such as GTA and RDR were shorter and felt less 'grand' than a traditional JRPG from that era. This is partially because of how JRPG's heavily rely on abstractions. The characters during the prerendered exploration parts aren't properly scaled, the battles aren't really turn based. The player sort of 'decodes' these things in his head and figures what they are meant to portray. Which means that these large scaled PS1 JRPGs came with a sense of scope that is partially an illusion. The more technology progressed the harder it was to recreate this illusion due to the realism of it all. Which ends you up at games like FF13 and even FF15 in terms of scope and such. That's why I think having three games developed on the Remake has possible advantages, one of them being increased scope and content.
I was sooo nervous to watch or read reviews, then I saw yours pop. I stared at it for a solid 15 mins, loving and hating the fact that you didn't give away your opinion in the title. "Well...they pulled it off". Oh thank God. Yours is the only review I need my dude, thank you.

Unfortunately the roles are reversed I feel. I think RE3 is a more worthwhile buy than this. Not a fan of splitting the game up. You're buying only a part of a 180 dollar game at least. Absolutely ridiculous.
@@VitinRitsu Correction, RE3 is a 20 hour game at least because of the number of times you need to play through to get everything out of the game. Including the Shop, Nightmare, and Inferno difficulty modes as well as those modes boasting RNG and moved items and drops.
@@Odie50000 I haven't played either of them yet but I was VERY excited for the RE3 remake (played it to death back in 1999). I do wanna reserve my opinion on it for when I play it but there does seem to be some uniformity in everyone's response towards it (game length, underwhelming potential, etc). though I can see what you're getting at about a full priced game being a "complete" package as opposed to a full priced game only being a part of a greater whole.
I wonder when the second part will come out. I hope within the next couple of years, though if that's next-gen, there will be a lot more work on the tech side. We'll see. In the meantime, I'm convinced I need to get this!
FF games starting in the early 90's are the reason why I fell in love with video games. I'm pretty torn here though. The complaints against this part of the remake could be forgiven if it was a flawed early chapter of the game. But it's the whole game as it exists for now. Seems like it would be a far better plan to wait two years for them to complete this project.
I think two years might be optimistic. The best comparison we have is FFXIII which released a new game every two years. I expect VII:R to be the same. And given that they stretched the opening few hours of the first disk of three disks into a single release then I doubt it'll be finished with only one other release. Not to mention SE says they don't know how many releases it'll be too finish the game, so they don't have a solid plan and are making it up as they go. We could be in for a long wait for a finished game
Finished the game yesterday and already playing through it again. I am so excited for where they are taking this re-telling. Another Awesome review bud.
brittney Whelp. Ralph did say his play time was about 35 hours with almost all side quests complete. I think he said it was about 30 hours without side quests which is more than fair.
The midgar exploration just seems like a huge missed opportunity. The whole thing just sounds like they wanted to make it Yakuza but with final fantasy but missed the whole interesting content part of the equation.
Yeah all the side quests seem only a little better than the awful ones from XV. But in general this game seems at least better than XV, which I thought was just okay.
SE has never been good as sidequests as they barely put effort into them. Then again, I should point at who is behind the projects. FF X and XII are probably good ones, XII the best far as sidequests go. Yakuza was developed by a guy that did mini-games in the first place, so he is a master at it. He understands the fun and how it should contribute to world and story in some way. Most games aren't good at executing this. FF XV was just terrible, so this wasn't a surprise.
@@BabysitterSky So you've bought Yakuza games and then never finished them because you didn't like them? I have to ask, how many did you play? And considering he just said the sidequest aspect which you probably only were able to access two or three a few hours in, you wouldn't be familiar enough to comment on it. If this did worse than Yakuza and it's praised for good sidequests and mini-games, you're actually speaking against FF VII R lol

Started this on PS Plus around a year ago following completion of FF16. I enjoyed it so much I decided to try this. Eventually though around Charles 9 I got distracted by another release. Knowing Rebirth was releasing at the end of the month I picked this back up about 2 weeks ago. Currently halfway through chapter 17. Doing everything outside the hardmode trophy and 9 bridal dressed trophy. I’ve enjoyed the game more and mor the closer I get to the end. I feel super blessed to be able to pick up FF7 Rebirth tonight as soon as I finish Remake!
This is not a remake, this is not a reboot, it's a god damn part 2, like final fantasy 7-2. And I absolutely love it. It was so fun and so enjoyable, oh my god how much I loved it!
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Played the original on day one and I feel they captured the essence of the original very well, from the quirky parts to the emotional beats. Amazingly well done remake, especially after the let down of RE3 Remakes length. Very well done, I cant imagine how long it will be though until the next part. 😭
I'm excited to see how other developers and publishers react to the probable succes of FF7R. If this translates in big sales you can be assured more classic games will get the full remake treatment. Very exciting to say the least. I do think they established most assets, systems and essential parts of game design. Being on unreal definitely helped so I have faith that part 2 will be released within 2-3 years. They hinted towards this in various interviews too. Safe for any weird things happening I doubt it will suffer from delays either, but you can never truly know.
@@eKko0 They actually said that? I mean I guess 2 years is possible if they have their stuff in order and don't want to add to many new systems. I've almost finished it and I can tell you right now, unless you're some hardcore ff7 fan, it's not worth it.. Square ruined it with their bullshit business strategy. Turned a single amazing game into five ridiculously long, boring ones.. Nothing but hours of lame fetch quests, literally one after another in the same town for hours on end.. Linear dungeons that slog on, literally slowing your traversal down at every turn, reusing nearly every environment, forcing you through the same mob infested areas over and over throughout the game.. @@gstylez0107 well, im 30 hrs in, and i loved every bit of it. I'm seeing it more as an "fanservice"-standalone. If you dont expect the events tp happen at the same time and pacing like in the original it doesnt feel thst dragged. Way better than a "remake" like RE3.

Nier is truly a fantastic game. It's been a while since a game shook me to the core since Xenogears. It's a game that I would gladly pay full price for. But FF7 will hold a special place in the hearts of many players, and at some point, you can't put a price on that.
@@jego207 well said. It's amazing how people want to judge without factoring in all the reasons why people buy things in the first place. Which is because they WANT to. @@darkwing5458 No, the problem is people like you who think you deserve the world on a silver platter at a discount. The whole purpose of games is entertainment. People buy games to play and enjoy. Unless you know somethin we don't, for all any of us know the next few episodes may be cheaper and function more like DLC. But for you to write this off so totally as a stain on gaming because it's episodic and lacking in YOUR OPINION doesn't mean the game is bad by any means.
@@darkwing5458 The original PS1 game was sold for $50, and the remake is sold for $60. Consider inflation and how it's more expensive to produce games now, the $10 difference for a 23 year gap looks reasonable. @Sterman99 How much Tw3 did you even play? Must not have been a lot cause Tw3 is the opposite of boring imo.
Sterman99 damn, you described my worst fears about Witcher 3. Open world games are super tricky to nail I feel. It's a 30 hour game you'll have more than enough timr
@5pointgo Got a friend who's playing it right now, 40 hours in and he's not even started Shinra HQ yet

I completely agree. This game reinvented the wheel in such a way that it blew me away and gave me a new and deeper appreciation of the game than the original gave me.

Combat and boss battles are hands down the stars of the game , they really nailed those 2.
I... think there has to be more than two other parts, unless they're _considerably_ longer.
4 parts is my guess
Turns out Rebirth is indeed much much longer

To anyone wondering: Most people have found this out before reaching this comment.
Yeah that worked real well for half-life 😏
@@gooberglop8461 I don't think you can compare Valve and SE.

I'm not even an FF7 fan but I felt the relief and joy to be had in hearing how you first started this video. I wish the same applied for RE3 😔
Unfortunately the roles are reversed I feel. I think RE3 is a more worthwhile buy than this. Not a fan of splitting the game up. You're buying only a part of a 180 dollar game at least. Absolutely ridiculous.
@@Odie50000 So you think a 5 hour game is worth 60 dolars, but a 35 hours game is not just because it is not "complete"?
@@VitinRitsu Correction, RE3 is a 20 hour game at least because of the number of times you need to play through to get everything out of the game. Including the Shop, Nightmare, and Inferno difficulty modes as well as those modes boasting RNG and moved items and drops.
@@VitinRitsu Indeed that is correct. At least RE3 is complete. Why would you spend $180 on a complete game sold to you in 3rds?
@@Odie50000 I haven't played either of them yet but I was VERY excited for the RE3 remake (played it to death back in 1999). I do wanna reserve my opinion on it for when I play it but there does seem to be some uniformity in everyone's response towards it (game length, underwhelming potential, etc). though I can see what you're getting at about a full priced game being a "complete" package as opposed to a full priced game only being a part of a greater whole.

Who’s here after Sony announced this will be the free game for P.S. Plus?

@@seth-nico ok ty
I'm glad. I've never finished a Yakuza game. I always get bored a few hours in and stop. So the less this is like that the better.
@@BabysitterSky So you've bought Yakuza games and then never finished them because you didn't like them? I have to ask, how many did you play?
And considering he just said the sidequest aspect which you probably only were able to access two or three a few hours in, you wouldn't be familiar enough to comment on it.
The price goes towards the hardware, the software and the stuff you can't measure. People LOVE FF7. Ain't no price tag on getting an all-time favorite generation-defining game remade with current tech more than 2 decades after the original release. $60, to me, is fair for that kind of experience

@@darkwing5458 No, the problem is people like you who think you deserve the world on a silver platter at a discount. The whole purpose of games is entertainment. How stupid is it to think you can that out of the equation? You sound as if your argument is a game is worth the money if it's packed full of content and caters to your idyllic vision of said game.
@@darkwing5458 The original PS1 game was sold for $50, and the remake is sold for $60. finalhalo3 same here, I was very excited when I played the demo. But I can’t shake the feeling that at the end of the day, this whole game revolves around a fraction of the original game. I want it. But not for 60 bucks when it’s all good content but mainly filler
Once fucking again, this game is complete. The story isn't. There is a difference.
@@MRocky323 you're an idiot.
@@Fencepost55 my god . The game is 40 hours. Is like 30 resident evil 3 hahaha.
@@Fencepost55 there manages to be a complete game with little filler considering everything, most of the new content is a welcome addition. It's a complete game, just not a complete story
coming back to this review man
its so hypocritical
Lol! How? Jesus some people are so butt hurt that he didn’t like FF16.
Now I need a Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII REMAKE :D
Pleaaaaseeeee i love Crisis Core. Zack and Genesis were my favorites from the series
It will never happen (legal reasons)
BlakidComedy can you explain more about that?
Francisco Davis I love it too! I wish they make a pc port with better graphics :)
@@FFS3ph1r0th your boy "genesis" is a Japanese artist and he didnt want his face in the game anymore thus ending the ff7 compilation (dirge - crisis.) With remake, they have to redo zack story without genesis
Thanks for the heads up early on! Ill watch after I grind all materia and levels to max if possible!
