The Texture loading issue has been an issue with the Unreal Engine for a long long time. I remember last gen, most Unreal 3 games just had horrendous texture pop in/loading delay. The fact that Jedi and FF7 also have this, still tell's me it's the way the engine handles texture streaming and it's being designed to be streamed with a 5400rpm drive.
Will be very interesting to see how this is effected on the PS5
Well, it still happens with an ssd on PS4 Pro, which is inexcusable, so I'll guess that although the insanely fast ps5 drive will help you will still have instances where a character gets to touch a surface before the texture pops in.
@@SalveMonesvol Don't forget though, just because you have an SSD in a ps4 doesn't mean it can take advantage of it, I think part of it is a bottleneck from whatever harddrive you have to texture streaming, I think it's using SATA2 if I recall? (we're on sata 3...which is necessary for even standard entry level SSD's) Which is why an SSD does next to nothing on a PS4 except maybe taking a few seconds off of a load time
To be honest it's one of the best showcases of UE4 and compared to the Star Wars game it's leaps and bounds better in many respects, atleast there's a texture to begin with.
Hope they can try and address it somewhat, not expecting a miracle it still is an Unreal engine.
@@poodlemeister22314 The original PS4 uses SATA II, PS4 Pro uses SATA III (not sure about the PS4 Slim)
@@poodlemeister22314 So very true. It's one of the main reasons I opted not to put one in my launch PS4. I do however have a Seagate 1TB SSHD in there. It happens to be one of the earlier models that has the 32GB NAND cache which does appear to make a difference, especially so when I was playing Destiny 2 and GTA V a lot on it. I think Blizzard might be on to something in regards to it being designed with Mechanical drives in mind. I've played several games on PC that just can't leverage even an NVME and still take a while to load. One for example is KOTOR and while it's fast, it's constrained. There's loads of other titles out there that exemplify this.
Here's to hoping that a PC release is down the line or it's something they can address with the PS5's vastly improved tech.
Unreal Engine and textures problem. well who would have thought...
Is that a common issue? Gears games look pretty good. I've used UE4 a bit for work and haven't had any issues.

Its not a remake. its a Spinoff or a Sequel. They lied for years that they would not do major changes to the story. The dishonesty of you calling it a remake and a re imagining in one sentence was disgusting. The story matters to a game like FF7 and to call this FF7 is an insult to that game.
@@KingBowser420 Yeah only the character models and bosses look good. And that demo they put out which was done to trick people into thinking this was a REMAKE instead of Nomura fan fic
why isnt this on the patreon site!?
Brad DL It is a remake. They’ve just changed the gameplay and they’re adding new areas and new elements. It’s an episodic remake. It’s not a sequel, and it’s not a spinoff.
HD towns have always been the greatest adversary of Square ENix.
Because of laziness. I think only FF IX remaster touched up the backgrounds, maybe VIII (and barely), while Type 0 touched nothing but character models. That's primarily what they aim for; lighting and character models. Eye candy is nice, but if it look out-of-place with environment, that's not good.
@@deadlyydude5522 Well...I don't think the best seen. It is more the aesthetic look the characters have more than anything as they don't use skin texture so much on character models. Asians prefer a more makeup, flawless look rather than the realsitic rendering used in Western games. I think FF XIV RR uses better, actually. But yes, compared to Capcom's engine or Rocksteady and the like, SE prefers style over detail.
I don't mind graphics so much as I do the game itself, but you can tell SE doesn't care to put the same effort into setting, which is bizarre considering the fantasy aspect. Older games and RR textures are about the only consistency you see or if the graphics are B-grade like what they do with Mana series, Kingdom Hearts. Actually....I think Dragon Qeust XI does a good job with what it has, though of course fitted to an art style.
Left Alive looked bland but the lighting effects were good, and we saw the same issue the VII remake has in FF XV (even though that had the excuse of being put together in a short period to get it released). So not sure what the excuse is here other than counting on people only focusing on trademark characters rather than the world reimagined, too.
@@TheMaestro116 Hm? No, the one SE did I'm not familiar with a fan mod, only emulator alterations. I recall seeing an article about the remaster show the slight difference in background, about as much as they did for VIII, but at the same time, it could have been about the mod.
I"m more familiar with the VIII's PC mod that's been around for awhile now which still looks better than the remaster. That is far as background goes; I'm not sure if they released the HD character models.

Too much of the memory budget goes into CPU, not a lot is left for the GPU to display high resolution textures.
It's true for a lot of open-world games and games with wide open areas, where there are a lot of NPCs around or alternately a lot of interactive elements.
The PS4 has 8GB of shared memory which needs to be allocated to both CPU and GPU workloads. That is not nearly enough for both at the same time, creating bottlenecks as a result.
@@elimalinsky7069 64 bit for pro cpu. 96 bit for xbox one x cpu.
They can use 7 cores for games. 1 for OS. Thing is this isnt standardly how sony intended. Its suppose to leave 2 cores for OS. And the reason is cache is tied every 2 cores on jaguar. Same with floating point unit. 2.1 and 2.3ghz isnt much to work with. The memory constraints can be partly rectified with blueray streaming lower tier assets and using gpu asynchronous compute for cpu tasks. Its basically cells philosophy in reverse. Cpu is trash. Gpu the muscle. Bottleneck is memory bandwidth. They need to more aggressively drop resolution to standard 2k if they are running out of memory or some custom in between. Problem solved. It came out in 2016
I have watched nearly a dozen of FF7R reviews and no one even mentions it. I find bad textures, the polygons and loading delays so blatant that it makes me almost want to stop and wait (and pray) for a patch. The more I try not to think about it, the more I notice it while playing.
I did excatly this. It appears so much in especially the scenes i was looking for (e.g. church and escort of Aerith) that i put down the game at this point. Don't want to ruin the experience like that, it so destroys the immersion for me. I wait and pray for a patch, or i'll wait for PC version.

I get the impression with the texture issues is either a bug or a lack of memory because even thought some areas show where it does correct it's self with better quality textures in time, there are a lot of areas where it doesn't and considering the amount of polygons and textures in a lot of areas on the games, it might be a lack of memory where the problem is.
I hope they fix this on PS5 version.
@@mrxcs It has a lot more memory so assuming it is hard written into the code, it should work better on the PS5 but I suspect they might need to patch it up, this is also assuming those textures are just not low quality textures but I think that is unlikely as that would be a bad mismatch considering the rest of the textures seem high quality, it's a strange one this to get a mix of high quality textures mixed in with really low quality textures and all I can think it could be is either a bug or more likely, lack of memory so they had to pick and choose and if that was the case, I think it would have made more sense to make all the textures look slightly worse so they could cram all of them in that they all look pretty good.
I experienced the same texture issues during my work with the review. Good to see I'm not the only one.
Btw, I noticed that some of the background were extremely flat and low polished when you can see the slums from high above, such as chapter 6 (or 7, can't remember for sure) and 15 (almost remind me of the good old pre-rendered backgrounds from the originals). Would love to hear if anyone else experienced the same issue.
@TongueTwisting ClytLicker
Lol. Okay dude.
@TongueTwisting ClytLicker I played the demo and Cloud's hair and every model looks like it was taken from Advent Children
The backgrounds are pretty much a flat wallpaper its pretty jarring when you really look at it. And textures streaming is a unreal 4 issue
Only time the backgrounds stuck out was during the nighttime (that moon feels oh so flat) and when going up to the plate near the end of the game. Other than that, I felt it held up decently enough.
Ha, yeah, the ones later in game really reminded me of the pre-rendered backgrounds from the original, I could almost believe it was an intentional throwback :P Thing is, though, even taking that into consideration that section was gorgeous anyway.
Good ol' Unreal Engine, gorgeous but has a history of poor data streaming.
Hopefully they'll address some of those texture pop ins but to be honest if that's the worst it's got then bring it on I'm looking forward to you!

Surprised they didn’t mention that.
@@Keivz they did somewhat with the Star Wars comparison but that game had some SERIOUS data streaming issues in places like the environment not loading at all

One thing I really like about unreal engine though is how the work that one developer does could potentially benefit other developers in the future. I suppose this is true of all game engines, forget I said anything.
I don't have a problem waiting for a PS5 release. Native 4K@60fps, higher texture resolution and the complete edition of the game.

It's going to be years from now. And if you want all of the ff7 remake next gen feature. Then you have to buy it again.

@jvalex18 ok
12:43 Alex is so talented he just invented the word ‘rubbage’. We learn something everyday from DF 😀
It definitely seems to be a texture streaming issue. One additional thing you didn't point out in the video is the NPC pop-in which is very jarring, even on my PS4 Pro with an SSD.
Whether or not these can be fixed, we'll have to see.
This is very weird considering how impressive the cutscenes and battles look throughout the whole game.
WindWolf28 *psshhhhh* everyone knows a *SSD* solves EVERYTHING 😂 didn’t you hear mark Cerny with your *EARS* ?
@@beetumdadd1 🤣
@@beetumdadd1 They do and Cerny is right. The whole problem with current-gen consoles is that they were designed with HDDs. Devs are forced to code their games with HDD in mind. So data layout on the drive, sequential (linear) and random (seek) data access are all based on HDD performance, not SSD.
PCI-E 4.0 SSDs (like in the upcoming Xbox Series X and PS5) are much much much better at sequential and random access compared to HDD. This opens the door to completely new data streaming systems, meaning new ways to design the scope of a game.
If you think data streaming is not a big deal in game engines and game design, I'm afraid you are mistaken. Video games are programs. Programs transform data. The faster you access the data, the more you can transform it. The Von Neumann Architecture that's been around for many decades hasn't changed. You want your data to be as close as possible and be accessed as fast as possible. That's what brought us RAM and CPU caches. I hope you won't argue about the importance of these two technologies.
@Naoto I admit it's not very beneficial, I added it because i'm fed up with HDDs ^^.
Naoto I mean you get a lot better than 1 second. Assuming you have a Pro.
I'm astonished by the negativity down here. Sure some of the texture detail looks subpar, but the lighting, particle effects, geometry of the environments, polygon count of the character / enemy models, reflection mapping, motion blur etc looks absolutely phenomenal to me. So much so that FFVII Remake is easily one of the best looking games games of the gen.
The fact that the art direction is stunning also helps.
I honestly find the criticism of the short falls in the texturing disproportionate to just how exceedingly pretty the game looks as a whole.
I think the main reason is precisely because a lot of the games looks so good, that the parts of the game that do look bad becomes VERY jarring and distracting. What would normally be an amazing experience of running around and enjoying the environments, becomes a constant stream of “What was THAT? Is that a bug? Is there something wrong with my system?” thoughts.
Your inner fangirl / boy blinds you then. Objectively speaking the FF 7 Remake isn't even anywhere near being one of the best looking PS 4 games. Not.even.close.
@@fortitudo-9552 What a moronic reply, I'm patently a guy by the way, hence the name.
For me, objectively speaking, FFVII Remake is absolutely one of the best looking games on the PS4, it's all subjective at the end of the day. The geometry of the environments, animations, main character models and boss design details, particle effects, and lighting, it excels in all of these areas from a technical standpoint, helped by the superb art direction.
A few subpar textures aren't enough to disqualify the game from being the running for the best looking PS4 game..
The first time I was able to start running around Sector 7 and near that apartment, I remember turning the camera around to look at the sky and backdrop and I was truly surprised that they just used a massive flat, non-animated background image... You would think for a game that has 100GB and isn't as open world as FFXV they would have superior textures and lighting.
Its a hardware issue, Mike Cerny with his ps5 presentation actually highlights the issues plagueing ps4 hardware , and its funny how ff7 remake is bringing all the ps4 hardware limitations to light so soon after that presentation, basically the hardrive is too slow... the ps5 more than rectifies the issue with its bleeding each hardrive tech (until pc catches up less than a year later)
Im starting to think the 100GB is from the cut scenes. Every time they zoom in the models and textures look way better. I'm thinking those zoomed in cut scenes are all pre-rendered.
It’s the PlayStation 4. Not the Engine.
Shadow Price you know how I’m sure your premise is wrong? The fan on my PS4 Pro does not get as wicked loud on FF7 Remake as it does on RE3, not even close. Obviously it’s not a “hardware” issue as you might believe-it’s for sure an issue of either the engine (given how Horizon Zero Dawn [Decima Engine vs Unreal] plays beautifully and with way more high-res rendering) or of Square-Enix developing team not optimizing the game thoroughly enough. yeah,it seems to be an auto config on unreal that locks the VRAM constraints to keep FPS 30 a priority, but by doing so it locks the texture quality.
There's also a fixed delay for loading that on UE based PC games you can just remove in config options.
Thats EXACTLY what I thought too. Lack of vram was my initial thought, seeing as the ps4 has a total of 8gb, including system and vram. Thats no where near enough for a modern game
Even though the texture quality is bafflingly bad often in the game, I'm just happy that they clearly cared about ensuring the game runs smoothly at all times, even on the standard PS4. I'd rather have bad textures but a solid and consistent FPS than the opposite.
That Door texture was bugging me so much.. I came onto digital foundry to make sure my PS4 Pro wasn't Falling apart.
Same
Used a PS4 Pro, texture loading was not an issue like you (and many) experienced but definitely can agree on HUGE variance with high and low res textures throughout the game. 3 biggest offenders: 1. "That" Door 2. Door to Seventh Heaven but from the inside - mine also seemed to render wrong, it seemed like it was rendering the door as if it were in direct sunlight like outside. 3. When they are climbing up the Shinra Builiding and you can see Midgar, they use a 360 degree image to create the illusion of the distance but it's resolution is criminally low and is downright jarring. All the models are hi-res in the foreground but the entire background is such a low res image that some of the pixels were as big as my thumb on a big tv. I thought it was a bug, reset but still there.
I love anything Digital foundry related :) It's always interesting to learn how games and graphics work in a professional and calming way

Starfals ok ok ok you could let go of the meat now. Jesus what a circle jerk
I played this on a base ps4 and this game ran really well. my ps4 didn't try to take off from my house and I only remember one quick dip in frame rate.
you play it in small screen right? a big 4k screen is what those tester are used since they can look for problem...
Dont sugarcoat it, the first part of the game was made for marketing purposes, they showed it to us everywhere and made a demo out of it, to say that they run out of memory is crazy xD If this is a bug fine, if this is not a bug then shame on square-enix 100%. But let's be honest... if it's really a bug why there is nothing showing it in the first chapters?
there might be a day 1 patch for these textures.... the game is technically not released yet... they just had to make adjustments due to covid19.
perhaps not a bug per se but a less refined usage of assets.
Obviously the first part of the game has been worked on tirelessly as a demo, and it's more linear nature allows a degree of freedom as to what assets are loaded in, as the game opens up there is less control over what the player sees and the games processes needs to work independently of alot of designer input.
I would expect them to tweak which assets are loaded in over the games life in order to reduce the texture streaming issues.
I dont expect it to clear up completely but as the devs are able to afford more time to see what does and doesnt work in each environment, they can modify what textures are given precedence and perhaps remove some unnecessary ones.
I wouldnt call it laziness on the part of the devs though, just an appropriate allocation of time spent.
Jerico Paulo Jacinto stop saying a day 1 patch will fix this lol Jesus
the whole game is the first dice on ps1......
I'm playing this, for the first time, right now, and browsing the internet to see other people's opinions of the graphics. This game has the most inconsistent graphics I have ever seen. Some NPC's look straight out of 2006, while the main characters look around 2015. Some environments are comparable to God of War, others are worse than FFXIII on PS3.
its gon release on PC in late 2021, cant wait to see the graphics
@Chosenxeno they were for free on Epic Games, I have some 100+ games from Epic for free, can't complain.
Plus Ive got PS4 as well so Im guilty of doing double dips when there's re-release of games highly regarded
play ff15 right now.. the randam framerate drop still a issue...
The texture issues is a combination of UE, PS4 hardware, and the game was made to give priority to hitting the target frame rate at all times.
UE4 already has issues with textures, and there are so much on screen at a given time on many maps the PS4 just can‘t quite handle it. However what makes it very noticeable is because the stable framerate. Most games will drop frames so the texture can load quicker when necessary, but FF7R seems to be optimized to have stable 30 FPS no matter the cost. Which resulted in smooth gameplay in exchange.
For textures that never loads I am unsure if it‘s engine or hardware.
Streaming speed of quality textures has always been an issue for the Unreal Engine. Especially when you're dealing with lower end specs for consoles relative to PCs. Some of the early Gears of War games on the 360 are perfect examples. It is strange though that some of those textures, for example on the door, stay at a low res. My guess is there's a bug where where some textures aren't fully streaming in.
Let's hope it's that and can be addressed in a patch and not them rushing the game out or not giving artists enough of a global vram budget to make every object at least look like a PS4 game, some of those models and textures are worse than some PS2 games. What baffles me is that KH3 and Gears 4/5 are all UE4 and look great with minimal issues.
Idk, to me it seems like it is not just the textures themselves, but the RIDICULOUSLY low traingle count as well. A lot of the objects are just waaaay to pointy. Almost everything that is supposed to be round, like some tables and most notably pipes look more like octagons. Mindboggling, considering 90% of midgar is filled with pipes!
Plus, it does not feel like some of the textures would even have a higher res model. Some, like the by now infamous apartment door I agree with, look like a streaming issue, but most others, for example on the ground, the mototrcycle at 11:14, the clutter at 12:50 appear as if even if there was a higher res model they would look at best like a bad ps3 model. Might just be my gut feeling, but a lot of them look like they just are that bad :(
If there is one thing a cannot stand it's low res textures! The only thing I hate more is low triangle count...
I'm kinda wondering if it's a memory issue.. ran out of memory for additional high resolution textures so just had to stay with the low resolution texture? With consoles it's impossible to know as there is no way to monitor the GPU, CPU or Memory utilization.
Shadowdane Dunno how it works exactly on consoles but in PC, this is indeed a hint about a lack of Vram BUT not to the point of not going to the high res textures, if you choose to use high res textures and your Vram is not enough ( well you will notice stutter first of all ) the system uses the HDD/SSD to help which lead to this problem ( textures loding slowly but not to the point of not loading fully at all ). I’m sure they try to optimize it more on consoles but the concept should be the same I think.
There might be a day one patch to address it.
IT wouldn't be a digital foundry video without them coming in for motion blur lol, good analysis and leaves me hopeful that the pc version will be awesome
Off topic here, I know. But damn! I want to see Cloud's sword in Monster Hunter World. I hope we get something collaborative eventually.
It's actually Angeal's sword. :P
@@simonizer2409 bruh
They did a Final Fantasy crossover already, so while I don't think it's very likely, it's not outside the realm of possibility.
If you are playing on PC, you can easily mod it. But yeah, an official collab would be nice, although there already was a FF collab, more specifically FFXIV (Behemoth)
Simon Hihn lol oops. I never had the privilege to play the original FF7. The remake looks impressive. Just holding out on some pc news atm.
I've been desperate for this tech review. I was lucky enough to get the game Friday (3rd) but have actually stopped playing it until the day 1 patch is released in the hopes they fix the low res texture issue. Its REALLY distracting and I feel is taking something away from this game so I really so hope they can fix it.
Very excited for John's Final Fantasy 7 digital foundry retro episode! Amazing work as always guys.
Kudos to you, I thought of doing the same thing but it was 9 days between when I got it and when it was supposed to come out. I finished it a couple of days ago and its really just the hub areas that only suffer from technical issues. The majority of the game looks perfect.
Better play the game its will not have a patch its a unreal engine problem+ low power of the ps4 you get great caracter model and poor background you just cant have both
And square choose quality caracter model over environement model
Deal with its man
@@legros731 nope. Still gonna hold on, see what can be done. I'm fine with waiting, got Divinity 2 keeping my occupied 😁
There is no day 1 patch. Its not a bug folks. Its how it is built. They cant handle open world at those settings so they turn everyone down .
@@cristiannegru8038 I'm not technically minded at all. I'm sure theres an easy answer to this but why is it that God of War looked so much better and the areas in that are far more vast? I don't remember seeing a single low res bush or wall..
The texture pop in is unacceptable.
It's exciting that modern hardware can render in real time something as good as pre-rendered cinematics from 10 years ago
So nobody, not even digital foundry is gonna mention the horrendous 240p pre rendered distant backgrounds?
It is by far the worst backgrounds i've come across on any videogame this generation. It's insulting.
Distant?
Dude whole chapter 8 is messy San Andreas textures
@Aaron9 Quite the opposite, pick up the drugs, you'll need them to not notice it.
Thanks for making a point to address the texture issue with such detail (ha, detail, get it?). It’s insane how many reviewers are giving this game a perfect score. It’s good game but, it isn’t without flaws. Nostalgia can be intoxicating.
Really enjoying the visuals here. But MAN, 60 fps on PS5 would really benefit the experience imo.
True, but they choose 30fps.. Higher chance of a stable fps.
@@elitebeing21 Well they did an amazing job on PS4. Very impressive how stable it is.
I just hope they future proofed it for the PS5.
@@KaiSchSp same. I don't won't them to upscale it though. I pay for it again if i can get everything ps5 offers.
Agreed.
On base ps4, i think that 1080p30 was the right call, but seeing the "4k ready" ps4 PRO failing to stay above 1440p at all times has been disappointing.
On the other hand, the ps5 should be able to run native 4k @60fps with higher quaity graphics, specially much better textures, and solve most of the texture pop in issue. It will be interesting.
@@SalveMonesvol I doubt it will run 4k60. I have a 2080ti and for a game like RDR2 which I just finished I could only get 1440/60 on ultra.
That’s cool that you guys pay attention to details I don’t even think about. I’m just excited to play it. A little less than 2 days to do so.
A lot of the commenters here don't seem to understand that even on other UE4 games where this texture thing happens, it's not THIS bad. It's really baffling as they say.
Hahaha I know. They dont know much effort are put in making the game. Alas, there will be some people nitpick 🤷🤷. It will be graphically better when run with high-end hardware.
Yeah in order to demonstrate the opinion, I even checked on another PS4 game built on by UE4, days gone, which is way better on textures
Because those games don't have as many unique assets aswell. Take since time to look at the objects in the world, allot of them are unique and not repeated allot
You know what? I'm having an absolute blast and this game has been addictive regardless of the low textures. Shows graphics aren't everything.
I would agree with you, if only the combat was better.... A lot better... Yah and if they also didn't inject the story with so much cringe
I was going to buy this game, but then I learned about that lo-res texture door. 0/10. I'm going back to Knack 2.
That's hilarious.
Thx for mentioning Lost Odyssey, this amazing game by Final Fantasy Father Sakaguchi is so underrated, it deserves every bit of attention it can get!
Those PS2 textures though
@Zack Smith yup
ps1...
This game looks really good on the big screen and if your TV has smoothing options to mimic 60 fps.
hard not notice that ps1 texture...
campkira maybe because my PC is old from 2015 and I’m primarily a console gamer, I never really notice these things. Are people saying this game doesn’t have good graphics? What game is a good example of good graphics ?

After seeing the ending i have to agree, you could be excused for thinking it was a sequel to FF advent children.

It's not though
This is why Sony focused so much on the SSD. It'll allow devs to have so much of the highest quality 4K textures on screen and in the world without it looking like playdough. Don't know how this will pan out on XSX.
Cryptic Scope the SSD on the Xbox will be a Nvme drive, which will be 2-4 times faster than any SSD on the market including the Playstations if they use a box standard SSD
@@LensToHorizon That's high end NVME, 2TB sticks of the good stuff are around $500, don't kid yourself. And I can assure you with modern games hitting upwards of 80-120gb, you'd be a moron to have less than 2TB. Especially because you should never run an SSD of any kind at more than 3/4 to 4/5 capacity.
Consoles are not cutting edge, they ALWAYS use outdated hardware so they can cut down on prices. ALWAYS. Just like when Microsoft sand bagged the OneX one year late so they could get the hardware at a better price.
You want performance, you have to pay for it. You want True 4k 60fps on High to Ultra settings? That'll be $2000 minimum. I know first hand and that was before the massive spike in gpu prices.
Your silly ass $500 console will never come close to being legit. Face the facts. Even if they put NVME in there it will be the cheapest they can concoct, and it will have to be made specially for them because they don't exist at the dirt cheap level they will need.
16:30 When Alex finds out that John is not just his colleague, but also a friend.
Considering how bad frame pacing was with FFXV and how texture pop in/late resolution is mostly caused by lack of and/or slow memory/storage,
this game looking as it does now running stable 30fps on current console hardware bodes very well for all that is to come, both with the new consoles/PC port, as well as the subsequent episodes being more polished (which will most likely be PS5 timed exclusives).
I will play them as they come out on the consoles and then play all games in a single run on the PC with all the bells and whistles turned on.
Good stuff!
It's really faithful to original game, you can see it looking at the textures of the Remake!

I hope John's df retro looks at the PC Port of ff7 by eidos. That was how I first experienced it and PC gaming back then was quirky. Ff7 was very hard to get working and windows 98 would glitch out randomly if you so much as sneezed in promixity to your PC to the point where you had to make a full format reinstall almost a yearly spring cleaning event. I remember being a mainstay on the eidos forums and a few tricks back then was copying the movies from the disc to hard drive and editing the registry because even a full install streamed movies...among countless other things we did to get the game working.
I had FF8 on Windows 98. I remember getting to a building on some cliff and that guy Zell or whatever his name was kept talking about liberating your home and then the game crashed and the PC got a virus from America Online and we didn't bother getting it fixed. That was around 2001 and I didn't get another PC until 2004
Oh god o remember those days.... dos games worked great nearly all the time... then windows came along and games went from floppy disc to cd... this was the beginning of all the problems it seemed... at least to me at the time as a child.
Figuring out how to properly install a game and make it run was often times more fun than the actual game.
@@HomeDefender30 Nah, DOS games had HEAPS of problems that sometimes, you couldn't do anything about (like games being written per-cycle rather than delta time), Windows did add problems but allowed for much better games, and most issues would have existed back in the DOS era as well.
@AnEn Some games were extremely temperamental, where a single reboot could somehow change it to not work. It would require a reinstall of the entire OS to work right, and I remember having to do that on Windows XP as well.
I believe that PC port is considered or might be one of the worst and problematic ever (at least I've worked/played with). Also, coudn't finish the game, because after a PC hw failure and pretty much same system after fix, game just refused to run... Later I found out it was quite the miracle that I managed to make it run and play in the first time. Kinda sad I never finished the game, think I was at golden saucer, and maybe at least past good 3rd of the game maybe a bit more. I'll assume that the best way ro experience the old game is emulation these days.
Quantum break did the same thing were the CGI cinematic cut screens fluidly blended in with gameplay. If u have a xbox one x withba 4k tv and hdr I highly recommend that game. Btw if this game came our on xbox itll be best played and look the best on the xbox one x
Seems like a bait and switch to me. Get ppl excited with a very polished first couple missions then let them find out it’s not all that nice.
More likely either an LOD bug or just pure hardware limitations. PS4 hardware is nearly 7 years old, after all.
Bullshit, XV looks better then this! And why is this game 90GB?! Have you played any other graphical heavy hitters on base PS4? (Like RDR2, GOW) none of them have these issues, it's just Squeenix being incompetent as always. There's talk from Yoshinori Kitase to remake the remake in 10 years SMH
Since polish is all square is good for I'm so taken back they ballsed this up as they did. I'm really regretting paying for this after KH3 and FF15 were huge disappointed IMO
I've noticed the texture issues as well when I first entered the slums, performance is definitely consistent though. It distracted me but wasn't a deal breaker personally. (PS4 pro internal SSD)
2.40 yesss, Lost Odyssey did this really great. Wish it had more recognition, it was one of its generation's best rpgs. Better than FF13s for sure!

@Bjorn Ironsides Uh YEAH. Have you played through this game?
Sick Game Squad Ps2 game??????😕
@@athinadrk2882 Yeah. Remember God of War 1 and 2 on PS2? Or Jak and Daxter? Yeah, the textures in those games easily give the textures in this game a run for their money.
@Bjorn Ironsides In some cases the only thing that distinguishes it from looking like a PS2 game is the screen resolution and character models. The environment and low textures sometimes resembles a PS2 game, period.
@Bjorn Ironsides Some of the textures and geometry look worse than PS2 games so I stand by my comment. Developers should not be able to get away with this crap. Idiots like you won't even call them out on this lazy game design.
They've done the loading on the background / during the cutscene's pretty much perfectly! Except that sometimes there are some textures loading in late, hopefully they can patch that on day 1.
I love how people are saying "It's too linear" even though the original was linear. I especially love it when people say "iT's A cAsHgRaB FaNfIcTiOn!" Even though people wanted the game remade in the first place, the original's story had some odd moments too, and people should really expect added story stuff with the inclusion of Crisis Core, Before Crisis, Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, etc. To leave FF7 unchanged after all that stuff would be... weird. It's always been my dream to see Midgar fleshed out, and now it's been fulfilled.

I'm always amaze how a console.. like my PS4 Pro that only have 4.2 teraflops can make such stunning graphic.
The most interesting thing about this is that pretty much all of these technical failings are addressed in the next generation of console so i'm confident that the PS5 port of this game will be quite amazing as well as the next part of the story given that it will most likely not be on the PS4 or the XB1.
I think that for higher sales the next part will be on both PS4 and PS5. Not everyone will jump directly into next gen, and SE would like to sell as many copies of the game as possible (100+ million PS4 user, higher probability that more people will buy the game, compared to several millions users of PS5, which will be new to market). So probably the series is stuck with the current gen at least for another game.
No its a unreal engine problem no amount of power can overcome this

That texture streaming problem occurred to me when I was playing other games like AC Odyssey and Origins after a couple of updates. It is worst when characters were traveling fast. Can't wait for next Gen when they solve all this nonsense.
Upgraded my Pro with an internal SSD and it was still there but a much better.
The textures killing it for me at the moment. I hope patches will fix this.
I think the trade off is, you get extremely high polygon characters and environments, while we severely cut the detail of some objects so the console doesn't freeze and crash.
that’s patchable so it’s likely
Lower polyfy.
Bump map it and have decent textures. Was so close to being a must buy.
@@remasteredretropcgames3312 it's the fault of current gen consoles. Games are trying to look better and more detailed, but PS4 and Xbox one is severely outdated for such ambition. Every console generation has consoles end with games that look too detailed, but at the expense of graphical sacrifices in things you won't stare at for too long. This is a current gen problem, not a final fantasy problem. PS4 and Xbox one just cannot keep up. Conker's bad fur day was the Nintendo 64's most detailed game, but the price of that was a bad framerate.
@@deepmind5318 Pseudo advanced trollmanship there deep mind. GFY.

... well , they'll surely get a lot of money with the PS5 version that was shown yesterday 😅 It looks absolutely beautiful.
But I'm with you, I really hope this means the PS4 version will also get a patch to fix, at least, all these poor textures and pop-ins
It looks like they didn't do the right optimizations around the slow HDD of the PS4. The fundamental problem isn't really fixable, which is why the game slows you down so much to load assets, but they could've made it less distracting by prioritizing textures differently. I doubt this will ever get better on last gen consoles at this point. Hopefully they've put in the work to solve these issues in the PS5 version. Seeing the sub 2 second loading times in the Intergrade trailer makes me think that improving the asset streaming was one of their priorities for the PS5 version. I can't wait to see what they'll do with the next-gen only sequel, since it's obvious that their ambitions were heavily limited by the hardware of the PS4.
It would've been nice if they could include a Crisis Core HD Remaster with this.
I'm hoping for that and Advent Children DLC down the line..
@@NeoNinjaX87 Yes that would complete the 7 saga. Hopefully when all the episodes are released they do a special compilation with both Advent Children and Crisis Core HD.

I'm new to this channel and one thing I've noticed off the bat is how technical you guys get. Often times some of the semi casual gamers like me will scoff at this kind of stuff like frame rate and rendering as snobbish, but we forget video games are a lot more than plot points and ability strats. I might not understand it all but bringing to light something as simple to the more knowledgeable folks in this comment section like transitioning from real time to pre rendered and lauding that is refreshing. It's the same thing I feel today with animated movies. Take for instance Spider Verse this last year, which was incredible from a visual sense, but was buried underneath the praise of story and message. These are important yes, but it's also just as if not more important in both these mediums to laud the technical aspects. I hear a lot of debate and discussions over the FF7 remakes ending and story (I am definitely in this camp as well) but we can't be reminded enough how much this game works because of the craft that went into the visuals and backend
The demo knocked it out of the park for me, so I bought it based on that.
Then I found myself looking at blurry piles of trash while searching for lost cats.
The doors thing leads to me to believe it's an issue to be patched for sure. Day 1 patch hopefuly sorts it.
The real question is "what are those ghosts from harry pottery."
Apparently they have something to do with keeping the timeline intact, you know to make sure the characters stay on the right path.
They essentially turn the remake into a sequel.
They keep Biggs and Wegde alive and, supposedly, going to keep Aerith from dying.
so.. this is a new FFVII sequel. got it
Hmmm, more like a new way of butchering FFVII's story.
The fact the game runs a solid 1080(maybe wdk if its dynamic too) 30fps on base ps4 makes me so happy cant wait to get my hands on this game
I'm really surprised you guys didn't mention the ultra low res object shadows in the footage you were showing while talking about the baked lighting.
And hey, at least you guys are praising motion blur that actually looks correct this time, even though motion blur still accomplishes nothing other than destroying detail.
Frinking amazing game, lived up to all my expectations. It's true there are a few minor graphical issues (the relatively bad minor character models and lip syncing being the worst) but... yeah, it's incredible.
Only once or twice did I have significant issues with texture load in, though.
Please reply :) can you tell me what you liked about this remake? I liked a few things and had some nice surprises but more often then not i disliked almost everything else from Characters/voice acting/story/filler/visual and gameplay glitches/boring gameplay/no polish after start
But I'd love to hear a positive opinion :) and why you liked it ❤️
@@kristopher4557 Well, as it happens I uploaded a review to my channel a few days back, if you feel like checking that out :)
But I doubt anything I can say will sway your opinion (which is fine). If you don't like the characters and story, then yeah, this really isn't the game for you. Personally I absolutely love them, but that's subjective.
As for the other stuff, though... Visual and gameplay glitches? I never experienced any, apart from the one or two occasions I mentioned. Voice acting? Okay, maybe they didn't sound the way you imagined them, but I don't think there's any way you could say it's objectively bad. No polish? That genuinely surprises me; I honestly think that objectively speaking it's one of the most highly polished games of recent times. Boring gameplay? I dunno, I was never bored, but again, if it's not your sort of game, that's tough to argue with.
Filler... okay, this is the one thing that I can understand people being genuinely somewhat annoyed by. To stretch the whole game to take place solely in Midgar they had to add a lot, and not all of it is massively interesting. But personally, I love the vast majority of the new stuff, I loved finding out more about Wedge, Biggs and Jessie, and I thought Aerith in particular benefited from getting more screen time. Not all the new characters were great; I remember thinking Leslie's little story was pretty pointless and did actually negatively affect the pacing of the game. And the sidequests aren't particularly interesting - but even then I still appreciated the fact they gave me a reason to explore the world.
But yeah, if it's not your sort of game, that's fine :) I'm interested to know, though, were you a fan of the original?
Not gonna lie, some of those textures look like they're from Sword and Shield
Aside from the door thing, the vast majority of this game looks fucking gorgeous to me. Thank god I'm an idiot.
It's an impressive feat the game is running on a ps4 at all - the backend development on FF7 Remake must be ridiculously optimized.
Oof that texture pop-in looks worse than Rage was on launch. Still outside of that overall the game looks amazing. Can't wait to play it.
