The Steam Deck got a recent OLED update at the end of last year, but the cost of storage is still very high. But a 3rd party 1TB SSD from Integral can offer a significant increase in storage and loading times. But can it even improve performance? I put the cost, size and speed questions to the test including all the details you need to swap your own drive simply. Is this the most Integral Steam Deck upgrade for 2024? The guide below to swap and re-install Steam OS can be used or skipped if not required to see the benefits of the new drive in action.

It’s a better value for sure to get an aftermarket drive than paying Valve extra.
I've got the older 64GB model and a 1TB Gen3x4 that I have yet to install...the gains from going from the 64GB eMMC to the 1TB PCIe Gen3x4 will be HUGE! But I've been super lazy and I don't have only played my deck ONCE since I got it last April LOL!! ... heck I don't even play the games I have, but I think I'll play them more once I figure out how to play the Windows Games I own on the deck.... maybe I'll set up a dual boot (I THINK it's possible.. I did have windows on it at one point just to see how it worked and it was fine.... but then I read that I can run the windows games on Steam... but all attempts fails being that I RAN OUT OF SPACE with my tiny, SLOW 64GB... and then I just got lazy.. but I think I'll try again after I install this 1TB drive)
Witty..??? Funny...???? I think I'll leave that to the people that NEED more space (although it would be cool to win just for the sake of winning) If it was a 2TB then I'd try, but there's no sense in being greedy (plus I'm not all that funny anyway.... okay .... maybe a bit funny LOOKING... but that's about it :D ) - THANK YOU for inspiring me to FINALLY get my deck done up right :)
Yeah, you will see the biggest leap for sure as you are effectively moving from an SD card to SSD. I would expect, in some games, over 100% increase in loading and even huge leaps in performance, specifically games like Rift Apart, Dead Space and such. Glad this motivated you to do it, let me know how much better it was.
Once you put in this very Integral part, is it ok to smell the Steam Deck then? 😂
It is always ok to sniff the Deck.
@@NXGamer hahaha
Hi @techieg33k I need to speak to you regards this drive, are you able to reply to me here or on X via DM?
It really is cool you see the speed boost. Did the unit feel warmer, fan run more/louder, or battery life change much?
No, about the same as the GPU is the biggest hit in many games.
@@NXGamer great to hear
Dude, your content is excellent, but it's not viewed by enough people. Is there any way you can plug your channel while doing your bits for IGN?
He must not be allowed to do that, or he would have already (wouldn’t you?). Seems a little unfair on IGN’s part but I guess they don’t want everyone plugging their own individual channels/content on IGN videos.
Story of my life, I cannot do that as I am working for IGN. Best I can do is on X when I share the IGN videos and in my Bio. Thanks
@@NXGamer I still think it helps grow your audience. People will see the quality content and then seek out your channel, it’s top notch stuff. Thanks again for all you do.
@@jedimindtrickonyou3692 Cheers mate. appreciate that.
@NXGamer Shame. I was turned on to your channel through X, so it's working to some extent. Keep up the quality content. Your audience is bound to grow.
I'm fairly certain, aside from save data, that many of my Switch physical cartridges games play directly from the cart and don't actually need to download or install anything.
You can, but many are only partly resident on the cart so you have to download (Batman, MK1, Hogwarts) some are not at all. And aside Nintendo's own games you have to patch them to the HD as the launch version is in a bad state, broken at times and even worse on occasion.
@@NXGamer completely true.
gg
One question remains, can you blend it? 🤔
I missed the joke on this one, sorry?
@@NXGamer never seen an old UA-cam channel where the whole point of it was to tried to blend tech with new and better blenders?
It was a was sad channel as they introduced all the great features new tech can do only to ask the question in the end “can you blend it?” Throwing let’s say a smart phone in and blend it till nothing but dust remains.
I believe they gone now.
Hand reveal 😅
