the game looks 100x better when the game switches to a grey sky with light rain and ray-traced puddles everywhere... Wish Insomniac would let us choose the time of day and weather.

Great work as usual, my man. Insomniac is carrying this Gen so far
This game is stunning. I’m playing on Fidelity VRR Uncapped but all the options are great. Hope everyone enjoys.
Imo fidelity plus uncapped on a 120hz display is the proper way to be playing it. They really worked on their LFC for this game and it's been a joy to play it at 40fps 120hz uncapped. Extremely smooth and very responsive all while looking absolutely gorgeous.
@@densetsu4286 40fps Fidelity VRR Uncapped is perfect

Great job
The game of the year. This game have everything!
The RT implementation is very nice. The senaking section in the school with all those shiny balloons that have RT was very nice.
Definitely hoping someone would share my thoughts. That was nice having the balloons using RT. That was a nice scene. Felt like a tech demo but real.
@jbway86 It felt very much like something they did just to show off their engine. :D
Very cool moment though. Quite the upgrade over the first two.
5 years 💟
Really crazy how it can look this good and still perform so well
The unlocked 40Hz mode seems a lot smoother on my TV than the smooth mode (seen particularly in camera pans). Strange if the average improvement is only 5fps, but I'll take it.
Very impressive game not even that far in and I am blown away by the scale of the game at the moment its best game of the year next to lies of P .
While the game looks great, you have to imagine how much more they could have done if they didn't restrict themselves to a 16ms CPU frame time, which was necessary if they wanted to allow for a 60fps mode. I can only imagine how much more they could have done with a 33ms CPU budget.
One thing I would hope is for a toggle to disable the Ray Traced Water in the 120hz Performance Uncapped mode: I tested out scenes without the water present and it jumped up to 80 FPS. With the water displayed it jumped straight down to around 62-63 FPS. Plus, in my opinion, the reflections aren't that impressive to look at, yet it eats up performance. Disabling those reflections in the water would maybe show a big increase. Or we just wait for the PS5 Pro to come out and to see how much performance has been improved compared to the base PS5.
Oooohh I'm definitely using that 40fps mode
Michael, what do we have to do to get Insomiac to add a stereoscopic 3d vr mode for psvr2? Regardless, This game is absolutely blowing my mind. Im so happy. Id love to know if they collaborated with Jamie Fristrom who designed the physics based swinging for spiderman2 2004... as the 0 assistance mode is incredible
lol
The zero assistance feels kinda broken. It's supposed to have better physics but they feel much worse. It doesn't carry momentum properly
@HugoStiglitz88 yeah it sint perfect and I suspect they'll work on it via patches. Tho the momentum aspect is largely down to needing to upgrade your swing speed. Getting altitude from ground level is more difficult than it should be and swinging isn't fully responsive to when I want. It ain't Spiderman 2 2004's level but it's a step in the right direction imo
I started in performance but there was too much shimmering in distant buildings. Switched to fidelity (30fps) and I was stunned at how smooth it looked and played, and I’ve been using performance mode in all my PS5 games where that’s an option. It’s the smoothest 30fps I’ve ever played, really not sure how they’ve done it, and for once I genuinely don’t feel like I’m missing out on much, while getting the full fidelity that really makes the game shine. Insomniac, please share your magic with other devs!
This game, Callisto Protocol, Jedi Survivor, and Cyberpunk 2077 are the only instances this generation so far that I prefer the quality mode. All in large part due to blurriness, but this game has some bad shimmering and some other, somewhat negligible downgrades. It's a very solid and satisfying 30fps and is beautiful. I was expecting to play 60fps like I was just doing with Miles Morales, but I quickly realized that wasn't happening.
Try ratchet and clank rift apart, it's probably the smoothest playing game i've ever tried.
Why does the thumbnail look like spider man is about to slap me? 😂
I would like an unlocked performance mode without RT. This should give us a higher resolution.
I have a curious question: Since I have the PSVR2 and enabled the 120hz for it, games allow me on my 60Hz LGB8 TV, to choose the balanced Mode (quality 40fps) and in comparison it actually is smoother in motion. Is that even possible?
Brilliant stuff as always, Michael. Insomniac are simply legends. The suite of graphics options gives me hope that we’ll get a 40/120hz mode for Starfield. It’s a great game but my 30fps days are long behind me…
great video! I'm still a bit confused though, whats the best option for fidelity 40fps, is it vrr off or vrr smooth? (to get the best resolution) I'm playing on the LG C9, supports 120hz vrr
VRR Uncapped is always best
For better resolution you should use vrr smooth so you'll get the same performance as vrr off but vrr will eat the dropped frames and it'll be smooth
Definitely smooth. Uncapped vrr never looks as stable
@@teddyholiday8038completely disagreed. Even small fluctuations are noticeable.
Don’t go for uncapped if you have 120hz. Fidelity - smooth - 120hz on auto
So if I enable the 40 fps mode do I set VRR to off or smoothed?
And what are the resolutions between 40, 40 with smoothed and 40 with uncapped VRR?
I play at 120hz with performance set on smooth, once you go 60fps or play any game with a higher frame rate, its difficult to go back.
This was mostly about rendering modes. I thought you were going ro break down the "tech" in SM 2. Such as use of SSD, textures, crowd system, physics, LODs, animation, etc. You only spoke of RT.
Do you use smoothed or uncapped 40fps mode?
A great technical feat. But shadow dropping the PS5 Pro alongside Spiderman 2 was a mistake IMO. 😂 Wait it's just running on PS5!
Why not just use 40 FPS VRR unlocked if the Res is similar to 40FPS locked?
As stated it looks like game is future proof / forward compatible and shall be able to hit 120fps or quality 60fps on ps5 pro / ps6. Still, despite being a techie, I do not fully understand the difference between quality 120hz mode with Vrr off and Vrr smooth. Quality 120hz is in fact 40fps mode. But ps5 Vrr works only above 48fps. So having Vrr for 40hz does not make sense at the moment. It will not be smooth as the name suggests. Also in case quality 120 hz vrr smooth allows going above 40hz up to 60 what is the point of 120hz quality Vrr unlocked?
The copium is around for this game, it looks fantastic on my 120hz oled!
I play on performance smoothed with 120 hertz off
Fidelity with smoothed vrr is quite impressive
Can we turn off "depth of field" like in Ratchet & Clank? I need freedom to have full sharpness of any part of screen that I CHOOSE TO LOOK AT - because when game is limiting me where am I "supposed to look at" by making rest of the screen a total blur is the worst thing. That completely ruins my immersion my suspension of disbelief - makes me feel the CAMERA instead of feeling like I'm INSIDE OF THAT WORLD!
There's an option to turn DoF off in settings
@@CheckmateStallioN Nice, thank you
Sometimes I like dof but sometimes it's annoying as hell. If I find an example of it being annoying or always on like in some games, I'll shut it off. So far I have it on though.

You think SM2 is true next gen. Wait until GTA 6.
Spiderman 2 and the last guardian truly spit on path tracing on PC graphically
That’s just not true. Nothing on console comes close to current Cyberpunk with Pathtracing and Ray Reconstruction. It looks mind blowing maxed out on PC
This is facts, cyberpunk just chucks cycles at the wall for op lighting while all else is jank. Spidey 2 is competent in every aspect
The last guardian is my favorite game but no lol path tracing blows all these games away
Frankly the lighting in Spiderman 2 isn't even that good. There are many games with better lighting. Metro exodus, uncharted 4, tlou part 1 and 2, jedi survivor, demons souls, sotc remake, death stranding, gt sport, gt7, and all the games with path tracing blow this games lighting out the water and not all of them even have ray traced lighting.
The best lighting in games is metro exodus because unlike most path tracing games, it has infinite light bounces instead of just a few or 1 like cyberpunk. Without the infinite bounces RT just doesn't work as good
@@wizzenberrynope lol
Plus the problem with witcher 3 and cyberpunk rt is that it only has 2 bounces tops. Games with infinite bounces like metro exodus blow Spiderman out the water but so does cyberpunk rasterized lighting frankly lol the lighting in this game is not that good
@@wizzenberry this is insanely inaccurate
You spelled craving wrong
My only disappointment is the horrible anisotropic filtering. Why? Didn’t think it was expensive.
Maybe an oversight?
That depends on several factors. The game engine is one. Not all engines handle anisotropic filtering natively without performance penalty(though they are few). Two, consoles cut features from their desktop gpu counterparts. Anisotropic filtering definitely has a cost on consoles. The One X is the only console I know of that had made strides there in the console space.
A lot or current Gen console games still don’t use 16x AF even though it’s been standard on PC for 20 years
@@teddyholiday8038 Yeah I don't understand the whole lack of Anisotropic Filtering on console games. It could also be a bug or something. For example am playing through Lords of the Fallen on PC and had to force AF to X16 on the Nvidia control panel because its lacking in the game.
@@TerraWare yeah there definitely cases of games launching with AF bugged, but there also cases (like TLOU Part One and TLOU Part Two) of otherwise gorgeous games that use low AF. On PC the setting has very little performance impact…

Will you be covering some of the inexplicable visual/graphical downgrades in a future video? Or will you be overlooking them like the rest of the gaming “journalists” seem to have done? Worse RT in the performance mode than SM1R & MM, worse faces and character models (seriously, look at the flat lightning of some of the faces in cutscenes), more shimmering, lower resolution. I won’t hold my breath…
Bot in pain LMAO
No one is going to do that because the game largely only has improvements across the board. RT isn't worse. It is much improved. Performance just took a larger hit than before because the entire game is more demanding than the previous. Modeling is improved almost universally, from the environment to the character models. Animation is improved. Alpha effects are improved. Particle effects are improved. City simulation is considerably more robust. Physics simulation is improved. Asset streaming is vastly improved. LOD is pushed out farther than the previous. Water rendering is improved. Lighting and shadowing are higher quality. Of course the resolution is more variable. The entire game is considerably more complex to render. If you really want a video that points out downgrades, I'll save you the time. Trash in trash cans is lower poly now. That's all. Move on.
RT is not worse compared to SM1 or SM:MM. While the lod levels for objects seem to be quite similar, the RT covers a lot more objects now and includes effects as well which where not ray traced in the reflections for the previous 2 games. The river has now received RT while the other 2 games only used SSR. The surfaces generally also have a much clearer RT now. The windows are much more reflective in SM2, while SM1 and SM:MM had very smuggy and dirty windows with reflections being nuch more diffused.
There might be some components of the RT that have not received an upgrade, but overall it is much better and wider RT implementation. Which also means some of the RT components won't have rendering budget available for upgrades and have to stay similar to SM1 and SM:MM if you want to widen the RT usage and improve RT implementation as a whole.
A downgrade would be if the RT implementation is the same and on top of that the RT reflections are rendered at a lower resolution. But that is not the case since RT has been improved overall.
While I think some characters might have aged a bit much since SM:MM, they are not lower detailed etc. Again the picture quality, texturess, amoubt of objects on screen, etc all significantly improved over the other 2 games. Yes there are very few objects that start to break up at long distances, like fire escapes when being very far away from them, but SM1 and SM:MM had those as well and dueing gameplay those are not even visible since it requires you to stand still and look far into the distance. Which is an acceptable compromise for pushing generally much better graphics.
Because there's also a bunch of ways 2 is better than remastered as well. Funny how you ignore all of those...
Go watch nick360s video comparison. There's more ways it was improved than downgraded
Also how the hell can you say the RT is worse when it's so much better in 2? Did you not see the comparisons? So many objects aren't even rendered in remastered plus the reflections are much blurrier
Plus did you somehow forget the fact water didn't have rt reflections in remastered but do in 2? 😂
buggy as hell..
Haven't encountered one single bug
Nope-Stop the “BS”ng!!!!
@@brianmcswain8932 Im 6 hours into the game and only saw a minor bit of texture flicker one time. Hardly buggy at all.

Que nada, estão ótimos, vocês que são chatos , ficam assistindo esse povo de PC gamer que está jogando e frustrado que no PC não está saindo bons jogos assim. Spider man 2 vai além de bons gráficos.
This has to be a joke man. Spiderman rerastered looks better than Spiderman 2. Even in your own images lol
It simply looks a bit cleaner due to the higher average resolution. In person tho, SM2 looks much better than SM1 in terms of overall graphical quality and assets. Pictures doesn't do it justice.
In still images sure, but the game in motion is doing a lot more demanding things than the first one ever did.
@@hristobibov They've improved the lighting for sure but much better? I don't think so. I never played Spiderman Remastered or MM on the PS5. Played both on PC at native 4K and am playing through Spiderman 2 now on PS5. They look very similar. Most noticeable differences to me are the overall lighting, global illumination, the foliage especially, trees and grass and the reflections in the river are much improved but everything else feels more of the same. I'm not very far into the game but it's what I am seeing.
Its an expansion of what came before it and that's fine what came before is great.
@@hristobibovyeah SM2 clearly looks better overall. Much better
@@TerraWare Ambient occlusion is better as well, clothing has proper physics, ray tracing on water and functionally now includes reflections of reflections and more objects and draw distance and some materials/textures/models are overall improved as well. While its a more subtle upgrade, it IS objectively improved in almost every way over SM1. Keep in mind that this is comparing with the Remastered version of SM1 which is on PS5 and PC and that version is leagues better than the original SM1 release on PS4 which is what SM2 should properly be compared to. SM1 Remastered was specifically improved with tech they were developing for SM2
