- You can apply niacinamide to either dry or damp skin without affecting its efficacy; just make sure not to apply it to wet skin.

Great video! Really informative and well explained, however a slight correction that NOT ALL serums should be applied on damp skin. Serums that contain ACTIVE INGREDIENTS ( ingredients that actively changes the skin) like Retinol, Glycolic Acid, Vitamin C, etc .. should be applied on DRY SKIN. It can cause SEVERE irritation and redness as well as the product sliding around wet/damp skin rather than being penetrated deeply. Hope this helps 💕
I just learned that my version of damp skin was actually wet skin. Thank youuu for illustrate me

How to apply hyaluronic acid on damp skin or wet skin
Hello, two years back I left you a "hateful" comment about your application method of dropping niacinamide on your palms and spreading it. I'm sorry and I consider it a viable way now. :P
Haha 🤪 Over time, I figured out that it depends a lot on the texture of the serum you use. But it does not matter as long as you can get it where it is needed. 😉
Still, thank you very much for coming back appreciate it 🙂
How many times per week should I use the serum as a beginner? And after how many weeks should I start using it more often?
Start with once per day, daily-if tolerated. Do this for a few weeks, and then, if needed and tolerated, use it twice per day, daily.
Should I use niacinamide before or after hydrating essence, serum etc??
Technically, both ways are possible. However, the general order for skincare application is as follows:
Cleanser
Toner
Essence
Serums (including hydrating serums)
Moisturizer
Sunscreen
Can I use it without cleansing my face by facewash?
Yes

So can you list all the products with the exact name you have, including the cleanser? That way, I can help you better!
Use vitamin c in the morning as it works better that way . Use retional and niacinamide alternate days . When u start using the retional apply it on dry skin and apply it 2 days say Monday and Thursday ( u can pick any day , this is only for your skin to adjust with the new product or else you'll have the worst nightmare ever ) ONLY after 2 weeks , apply it in alternative days .

Hi Melissa, I want to know which all serums should be kept in a refrigerator. I mean between Niacinamide, Vitamin C, Retinol, AHA/BHA, which serum should be refrigerated?
It depends on the overall formulation of the product and the country you live in. Generally speaking, if you reside in a hot and humid country with temperatures consistently above 25 degrees Celsius, it is advisable to store all skincare products in the fridge. Alternatively, using a skincare fridge, which maintains slightly higher temperatures compared to a regular kitchen fridge, would be even better.
Putting retinol and vitamin C formulations in the fridge can help extend their lifespan, as they are more sensitive to heat. However, it is important to consider the specific formulation of each product before refrigerating them.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Thanks alot for the detailed answer. I reside in India and its usually hot or humid here. I store my Retinol and Vitamin C in the refrigerator. Retinol is from the brand called Deconstruct and Vitamin C 20% serum is from Ever C 20. And also Niacinamide from Deconstruct and AHA/BHA too from Deconstruct which i keep at room the temperature. Is that fine?
Generally, niacinamide and AHA/BHA are not as affected by heat. However, if temperatures are very high, it may be best to store them in the fridge. Another option is to try storing them there to see what happens. Overall, they should be stored at temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius or slightly below. On the other hand, retinol and vitamin C are always great to put in the fridge.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Thanks alot for clearing my doubt Melissa. Appreciate it.

I applied niacinamide in wet skin thinking that as damp..I got small bumps all over my face 😭..now I found the reason.. I don't know what to do now🤧
I doubt that this is the reason for the bumps, but it is not a good idea if you want to layer multiple products. The skin may also take some time to adjust to the high % of Niacinamide. So it will get better after a while unless the % is too high for you.
Thank you 😘
You're welcome 😊
Hi Melissa! I have an unrelated question. If ur supposed to put moisturizers on damp skin to lock in moisture, how are you supposed to use ahas/bhas if u need them AM & PM for acne/blackheads?? 🥰❤️
That's a good question I often get, and I think I need to record such a video soon.
So as I explained in this video, the confusing part is that many people confuse damp and wet skin; this is the perfect example of why damp skin does not mean having water drops on the skin surface.
While you wash your face, the skin absorbs some water, making it damp, the water which stays on the skin's surface is the access water it cannot absorb (like your clothes), so it stays that way for several minutes. (you can try it by putting on silicon gloves right after washing or a couple of minutes later, it will not work) Technically, you have a few minutes (depending on the climate) when the skin is still damp. So you can layer your products after another, and you will still apply all of them to damp skin :)
But even if you wait 5 minutes for the skin to dry, your AHA/BHA already contains water (99% of the time, the exception would be the Anhydrous solutions), giving the skin water, making it damp again. And the moisturizer also contains water, so it is never an issue. 😃
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Wow! Thank you so much for putting so much time into that answer. Well that makes a lot of sense. After I wash my face, I use a toner and then I use my LaRoche Posey Duo which is mostly benzoyl peroxide. I use this with my Trentinoin in one step. But I do feel like my skin is pretty dry after I put those on. I just don't understand if I can then put on my peptides like my Matryxl 3000 or Timeless Synth 6 & then go right into the moisturizer. If I did want to dampen the skin again after the benzoyle peroxide and trentinoin (which is very drying), what would be something safe to possibly mist or pat on my skin that I guess has a safe pH level for my benzoyle but also for the peptides. I'm always looking for a liquid spritz to add before the thicker moisturizer ONLY if I can feel that my skin is very dry at this point. I'm just so afraid of the pH thing messing up the peptides and BHA. I can't seem to find any mist, essence, etc to add more moisture if I need it that doesn't say it balances pH. I'm so sorry for all the info and questions but I can't find these answers anywhere. It would be wonderful if you could do a video about layering ahas/bhas & peptides but still something ph safe to spray/pat on later for extra moisture if my skin feels very dry still but that won't harm or deactivate my benzoyl peroxide or peptides. I'm thinking maybe a rose water?? I just don't know what destroys the peptides or BP! Lol. I will keep an eye out for a video if you don't have time to answer this question. Thank you so much Melissa! You are wonderfully informatative & so very helpful!! 💜💜💜
@@laurenv2003 Yes, both products dry the skin. But there is the concern that Benzoyl peroxide may oxidize some ingredients. But nobody really looked deeply into this; there is no research at all, at least not one that is publicly available. So I guess it is too expensive-too little reward for the work you need to put into it. However, if you can avoid using these products in the same routine, I would suggest doing this because you have peace of mind.
As I explained above, these serums contain mostly water, and the moisturizer contains water; if you Google it, it must be somewhere between 60-90%, so you are already adding water to the skin when using these products. I think that the "mist thing" came from when people used oils or petrolatum jelly, so they had to lock in that moisture on the go when they had dry skin. ( i mean after tapping it, not immediately as otherwise, it would become a mess or smeary). But nowadays, with all these serums, essence, toners etc., it is no longer needed. The skin cannot absorb that much, and it would just stay on top, doing nothing.
And generally, I would only use Benzoyl Peroxide and Tretinoin in separate routines. I also do that with a Benzoyl Peroxide cleanser and a Retinoid, and it works well; when it becomes too dry, I just skip 1-2 days, and everything is fine again. So I think you may overthink it and keep it complicated when it is not necessary or beneficial. 😉

@@viezs4370 Yes, so it may be the salicylic acid doing this, but hard to tell since you started all these products at once, which is often an issue. So the best would be to stop using them altogether, wait a few days, and slowly incorporate one after the other to figure out the products causing the problems.
And I have done such videos in the past. Still, it is impossible to determine if it is real or fake as The Ordinary has so many different packages, and sometimes their original bottles are crappy.
