I'd say the only thing missing, which actually would be somewhat relevant to the story told here, would be explaining that SFIV wasn't made in a bubble & was immediately the game that saved 2D fighting games, as the video kind of makes that indication. In fact, as admitted by the staff before, the original prototypes for SFIV were TERRIBLE & looked really bad, so much so that releasing the game in that form would have killed the franchise dead. What saved the SFIV staff (& possibly the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom staff, too, since that was being made around the same time as SFIV) was Arc System Works' Battle Fantasia, which was mentioned by Dave in passing, but nothing more. The SFIV team saw what ArcSys had done with Battle Fantasia used that as a baseline of inspiration, which in turn allowed SFIV to be the game that it was in 2008, at least from a visual perspective (as Ono was initially worried that SF's roster would look weird with then-modern 3D models). I'm not saying that Battle Fantasia should actually be the game that "SAVED 2D Fighting Games", because that would be ridiculous. However, I was a little disappointed at how Dave actually did bring it up (which was shocking enough, admittedly), but didn't actually mention how it helped guide SFIV down the right path to save 2D fighting games. You could argue that behind most major fighting games there's likely a small & forgotten one that actually played some role in its creation.
Battle Fantasia was the first polygonal fighting game that really nailed 2d FG gameplay. When SF4 was announced, SF fans who were apprehensive about the transition from sprites to polygons were encouraged to give BF a try

Sf4 was a great time to be a fighting game fan. It wasn't the the same as when sf2 dropped but it's the closest we can get in terms of the hype around it.
I was completely blind to the fighting game decline. The people I hung around kept on playing fighting games throughout the 2000s. Guilty Gear, Samsho V, Tekken, the Vs. series, those kept us playing. It wasn't until years later that I heard the term 09ers, then I found out it was a term for the new influx of players that revived fighting games. "Revived? Hell, I didn't know it was dead".
it wasnt. the fighting game community always says it got revived or saved by something. the jrpg community does this same thing. And so does the CRPG community. A game doesnt come out from a triple A company for a few years, then everyone acts like the genre died... For example in this video alone, he made it sound like fighting games were dying between the release of street fighter 2 and street fighter 3. And that SNK and KOF went bankrupt. This was all within a space of like 8 years..... street fighter 2 released in 1991 and street fighter 3 in 1999. KOF continued to make games in 2000,20001,and 2002. He also made it sound like 3D fighting games started disturbing the balance of 2D fighting games and smash bros was a huge impact on 2.5D fighting games. buuuuuut tekken 2 released in 1995 only 4 years after street fighter 2. and smash released in 1999. The time frame really isnt so huge for them to be claiming anything about 2D fighting games going on a decline and needing saving and 3D games taking over... like it all existed within the same time frame And this isnt even mentioning all the anime fighters and other just non mainstream fighting games that released inbetween street fighter 3 and 4. And all the street fighter rereleases that were successful between 3 and 4 as well.
street fighter 4 was AMAZING when it first came out.. it was the first online game i ever played.. it exceeded my expectations.. i bought it in march 2009.. it was so good... i remember buying it and thinking it was just like street fighter 2 champion edition that i had on genesis in the 90s.. but SF4 had enough new stuff to have it still be fresh.. it had the perfect feel of old and new
I loved SF3: third strike, that added a few of the OG characters back into the game, the parry system in that game was elite lol, SF 4 was great it deffo brought back my love for fighting games
Coming into fighting games now, I don't love the look of Street Fighter 4 or 5. The gameplay might be good, but the visuals of SF2 and 3 are more appealing to me.
Its kinda funny how 2D fighters was gonna die out cause 3D fighters were everywhere, now its pretty much just Tekken, Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive are 6ft deep, and Viruta Fighter did everything they wanted with VF5FS so it peaked. Bloody Roar is gone, no Rival School, heck as weird as KoF Maximum Impact series was, that was the highest selling KoF in the USA until KoF 14. Theres not even alot of attempts on the indie side to make 3D fighters, which is really weird.
nice tribute for a very well deserving game, well played Max and Dave :) ps: for the outro part, which Dave explains that sf2 intro is his best; well I've seen some short interviews with the composers of that soundtrack. And I know that almost every stage music has its own composer and there are many stories and ideas behind them. I'd love to see a full coverage about that any day, any time :)
SF4 also had the nostalgia benefit where a bunch of kids who played street fighter 2 were now adults with incomes. I had bought every Tekken and sf4 was the first street fighter I had bought since SF2. Loads of friends who were not that into fighting games bought it as well as they still remembered how to bust out a few moves and everyone claimed they were the best back in the day 😂. It also introduced me to the tournament scene in my country and inspired a song by a grime artist in the UK called D Double E. it’s was a whole moment.
To me, fighting games have always been fascinating, and I believe the massive player base of Street Fighter 4 is the primary reason for the revival of the genre.
This is for me the very best game I've ever played, I'm so glad that people recognize to this day that this game was one of the greatest episodes in gaming history.
Man, I remember when it came out, I had just graduated high school. My two older bros at the time had an apartment together and me and all of their friends would play it every single night along with 3rd strike and capcom vs snk 2. Those fight nights at there place were such good times for gaming.
SF4 brought back fighting games for sure. The 3d 2d style is still being used today and we saw alot of the popular fighting games make a come back. Street Fighter Alpha 3 is actually my favorite style personally but props to Capcom for making it popular again
I remember how when sf4 was announced everyone's question was "is it a 3d fighter?" Since the ex series wasn't well liked at the time. (I never understood this since i al e always thought 2+alpha was hella fun). Which it's only post SF4 that everyone started appreciating the EX series. Really though, i understood the worry at the time since it seemed like like every 2d fighter was moving into full 3d like Mortal Kombat
I don’t think 2 D Fighting Games will ever go out of style. As long as it’s kept fresh and still have the hints of nostalgic play. That have been loved for Decades Now. MK and Street Fighter are the Gold Standard 🏆🏆
I was a Smash Bros detractor for many many years. My son finally talked me into playing the WiiU version. He showed me how to recover from being knocked out the ring and how the special moves work and I really enjoyed it. Him, his friends, and I played it for months and months nonstop. Smash Bros is a real fighting game
Just a correction. ALL ORIGINAL XBOX Fighting Games(except oddly DOA3) had online play. It was the whole reason I bought it. While we are on the Xbox subject Halo gets too much credit for OG Xbox success. Fighting games, PSO and Phantom Dust are what I played. Not halo…P.S. Virtua Fighter Remix was the end of Arcade Fighting games. It looked better than the most cutting Edge Fighting game and it was on a Console.
I remember early first looks of SF4 was frowned upon, it was in 3D, the jump timing was off, etc...but once people got hands on wooo boy, I'll never forget it the hype. I still have my Gamestop preorder bandana and game from the launch. And then the Gamestop tournament was a gigantic deal too. A lot of people didn't see the game played at a high level, there wasn't twitter or a lot of youtube footage, and then seeing Poongko doing those sick FADC Ryu combos
One thing not mentioned is how balanced SF4 was. Unlike some games that can have top 8s with 1-2 characters being played. Evo had times in which ALL of the top 8 players mained a different character. It made the game much more fun to play and especially watch.
SFIV was massive, I remember during that time in major arcade places in malls that a lot of player are queueing to play the game. It was also the time when Tekken 6 and 5 DR was still popular, and people are still playing MVC2 but the people who are waiting in the queue were not as many as SFIV. Its like around 70 to 80% of the people were there to play SFIV and the remaining percentage were watching or playing other games.
He mentioned Soul Calibur but not the Sega Dreamcast?!? That game almost single handily destroyed arcades. It blew the arcade version out the water not a big deal I guess 😂
It’s the other way around. Dreamcast had half the memory of Naomi boards. It was Sega’s ingenuity that made the home ports work, but they were not definitely better than the arcade.
@@saynotop2w the arcade version of Soul Calibur was powered by a suped up Namco Ps1 arcade board. The Dreamcast version better in every conceivable way
It is important to note that SNK was still releasing titles such as KOF, Samurai Showdown and Fatal Fury, and these games were still very popular in Asia and Latin America when Capcom's 2D fighting games were on hiatus. SF4 saved 2D fighting games only from the North American (except Mexico) and European perspective.
The arcade experience is still the ultimate, way more exciting sharing it will fans of how you play and ppl who love what you love than playing it at home verging strangers online only!
Yeah arcades were packed when this dropped. It was almost intimidating playing in front of so many people. I really wished capcom released a MVC3 cabinet as well cause that’s when I feel the crowd kinda split. Some were at home grinding mvc3 others at the arcade grinding IV. Good times though.
Really, i was disappointed with SF4. I feel like TEKKEN took a dump after 5 and 7 might as well be POWER RANGERS in a Killer Instinct environment. MK is the only title that has continuously improved and made fabulous results.
I definitely remember this year, people thought it was over for the sf series and then boom sf4 single handedly revived the series. Kinda crazy sfV did so bad when it first released I was highly upset with it.
@@DonYoGi8331 the problem was that there was nothing in it at the start. and only a few characters. No arcade mode, no ranked mode, no tournament mode, etc
I still liked looking at USF4's graphics at 4k. Hopefully AMD will fix their 7900xtx driver soon, so I'll be able to enjoy it again in 4k - the menu is 4k, but the gameplay is only 1080p.
My arcade experience as a kid was severely limited. My mom didn’t let me go to the one arcade in town because she was worried I would meet the wrong kids. So my memories of arcade games is SF2 at 7-11 and MK at Walmart. Lol
I was 10 when SF3 came out. I thought it was cool, but there was never anyone else trying to play it in the arcade. It was also competing for quarters DIRECTLY with Tekken 3.
It’s scary to think how a Titan Series like Street Fighter which popularized the Fighting Game Genre almost died because of Street Fighter 3, Street Fighter 4 was the hero we needed and deserved, it gave us one of the best girls in Juri.
I honestly believe (my personal opinion) that Street Fighter 4 is the greatest street fighter ever made. I remember vanilla version SF4 grindijg for months and months online and playing againsy locals for money. SF4 super was sooo huge as well. All the tournament hype, the comebacks, combos, the super and ultra moves I really do believe are much better than any other SF game out there. Animation was very fluid. Focus attack was a huge game changer and the roster man it was the most impressive thing. I miss sf4. Now that's I'm playing street fighter 6 it really doesn't feel the same anymore. The drive rush is not as ground breaking as what the focus attack did.
“It influenced Fatal Fury……”. Actually that game was in development at the same time as SF2. It’s a original game by the developers who created SF1. Both SNK and Capcom influenced each other.
I was never an arcade gamer, but I liked fighting games for their cool looking characters and enjoyed them on console as a super casual player. SF4 was the first one I had the chance to actually learn, get better at and challenge other players. Information like combos and strategies were more easily available and thanks to Max's videos I learned that you can have fun with fighting games whether you win or lose. I'm still a very low skilled player, probably won't progress much beyond that, but as someone who used to play arcade mode on easy only, this is a step I could never see myself taking, and SF4 made it possible. SF4 And Max, specially Max!
Thanks for reaffirming that, indeed, the FGC truly does only care about the big name franchises. And given the reemergence of the Golden Age sentiment surrounding "SF6", that's still the case to this day.
yup true. like they basically ignore every other fighting game that releases lol. tekken and mortal kombat only just entered their radar the past few years. And dead or alive and soul caliber has been removed from their radar again lol. Fighterz put arcsystem works games onto their radar tho. so theres that. Yo FGC, There are other games than just street fighter...

The time frame really isnt so huge for them to be claiming anything about 2D fighting games going on a decline and needing saving and 3D games taking over... like it all existed within the same time frame
And this isnt even mentioning all the anime fighters and other just non mainstream fighting games that released inbetween street fighter 3 and 4. And all the street fighter rereleases that were successful between 3 and 4 as well.
Great call having Max on here. Tekken 3 was my first fighter back on ps1!
street fighter 4 was AMAZING when it first came out.. it was the first online game i ever played.. it exceeded my expectations.. i bought it in march 2009.. it was so good... i remember buying it and thinking it was just like street fighter 2 champion edition that i had on genesis in the 90s.. but SF4 had enough new stuff to have it still be fresh.. it had the perfect feel of old and new
I loved SF3: third strike, that added a few of the OG characters back into the game, the parry system in that game was elite lol, SF 4 was great it deffo brought back my love for fighting games
Theres not even alot of attempts on the indie side to make 3D fighters, which is really weird.
nice tribute for a very well deserving game, well played Max and Dave :)
ps: for the outro part, which Dave explains that sf2 intro is his best; well I've seen some short interviews with the composers of that soundtrack. And I know that almost every stage music has its own composer and there are many stories and ideas behind them. I'd love to see a full coverage about that any day, any time :)
The true savior was SF2: HD Remix. It proved that SF4 was worth making
7:54 that timing was impecable
To me, fighting games have always been fascinating, and I believe the massive player base of Street Fighter 4 is the primary reason for the revival of the genre.
loved watching mike Ross and Gootekts all the way back to the ‘08 arcade days, on their channel. And the visit to Tokyo w/ ed Ma
Gamespot better pay you well, i really enjoy your videos bro
Thank you! I really appreciate that. :)
Gotta thank Capcom for SFIV. That game definitely revived the SF franchise and fighting games once again.🔥🔥
This is for me the very best game I've ever played, I'm so glad that people recognize to this day that this game was one of the greatest episodes in gaming history.
Great video Dave K! Max is also an avid Dark Souls fan, hint hint. 😎
Thank you!
And… he is?? 🤔 Definitely good to know, haha
This is professional. I love this video 🎉
Glad you enjoyed! :)
Thanks for the timestamps 👍😃
Of course! I gotchu. :)
I came for the history of fighting games & Max, but I stayed for the doggo. Hopefully you do a follow-up with Street Fighter V & Street Fighter 6.
"Fighting game expert...Maximilian Dood." Excuse Me while I go to the doctor to have My sides stitched up from laughing too much.
I heard he has his PhD in fighting games
He IS an “expert” 🙄
SF4 was my first Street Fighter game and even to this day it might still be my favourite in the series by far
Man, I remember when it came out, I had just graduated high school. My two older bros at the time had an apartment together and me and all of their friends would play it every single night along with 3rd strike and capcom vs snk 2. Those fight nights at there place were such good times for gaming.
@@giantenemycrab420 that sounds like so much fun!
Mean tekken?
Mortal Kombat is still 2d movement
@@143Kuskii during the ps2 days, mortal kombat games were 3D fighters
I don’t think 2 D Fighting Games will ever go out of style. As long as it’s kept fresh and still have the hints of nostalgic play. That have been loved for Decades Now. MK and Street Fighter are the Gold Standard 🏆🏆
I was a Smash Bros detractor for many many years. My son finally talked me into playing the WiiU version. He showed me how to recover from being knocked out the ring and how the special moves work and I really enjoyed it. Him, his friends, and I played it for months and months nonstop.
Smash Bros is a real fighting game
yeah the new ones. the old ones were really mainly party games. sure you could play them seriously, but they werent meant to be played that way
After this came out even MK9 made the move to 2.5D and I was super excited.
I always love getting a chance to see Max as a subject matter expert, "out of character" from his streaming persona. Great video.
Came for Max, stayed for the actual video
Def had the perfect person to shotgun this topic. Big props to Max.!!
I clicked on this coz I was intrigued by the title and immediately got distracted by the dog on your couch
One thing not mentioned is how balanced SF4 was. Unlike some games that can have top 8s with 1-2 characters being played. Evo had times in which ALL of the top 8 players mained a different character. It made the game much more fun to play and especially watch.
Usf4 was gold hands down. Best game when it came out
Heart warming story. Super interesting to watch! Keep up the good work.
SF4's my favorite SF Game to this day!
Man that dog is definitely doing some sick combos on something in the background
I feel SF5 woulda did better if it got released on multiple consoles.
@@DonYoGi8331 SF5 was released in a barebones state, being multiplat wouldn't have helped a bit.
I see max and I click. Every time.
-sits- "Let's talk about fighting games"
Me: YEAHHHH
It’s scary to think how a Titan Series like Street Fighter which popularized the Fighting Game Genre almost died because of Street Fighter 3, Street Fighter 4 was the hero we needed and deserved, it gave us one of the best girls in Juri.
they were fine
Street Fighter 4 is this the best street fighter game to this day.
“It influenced Fatal Fury……”. Actually that game was in development at the same time as SF2. It’s a original game by the developers who created SF1.
Both SNK and Capcom influenced each other.
Ah, my bad!! Thank you for the correction!
This just made me want to buy SF4 again...I remember playing it on my dad's phone back in the day...good times....
Played Street Fighter 3 2nd impact in the hospital.
All you had to say was SF4 gave us Juri. The best new fighter ever ;)
Thank you Ono
😑
🙏
No!!! the best new fighter was DUDLEY SINCE STREET FIGHTER 3 HE WAS. HE IS. HE STILL THE BEST ONE. And also necro
That's actually Cviper
Honor, to whom Honor deserves . STREET FIGHTER 4
