“Stallone realizes he’s invincible at this point so he just throws himself off a mountain.” 😂
“Totally fine”
Aim for the bushes :)
Well Rambo did it...
I have to admit I never noticed how goofy all the climbing scenes are, but I agree the opening fall is one of the most tense and brutal things I’ve ever seen in a movie
Loved this movie as a kid and the ace Ventura spoof scene was amazing!😂😂
That and the Rhino "birthing" scene are gold in that movie!
@@rushmore3927 hahaha I showed both ace Ventura movies to my 6 and 8 y/os recently and they didn't know what to think!😂 They laughed but in a "holy cow. Dad is into some wierd stuff" kind of way!😂😂
I remember watching that Ace Ventura scene with my mom and she had no clue what was going on lol
I like how they throw that guy out of the plane.."Lets get him to the hospital" 😅
That was hillarious.
My favorite part of the movie, I never laughed so hard in a theater.
To this day i think this film still holds the number 1 spot for the most brutal and crazy opening sequence ever.
It cracks me up that most people know Michael Rooker as Yondu. I first saw him as Henry Lee Lucas in "Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer" and I will always look at him a bit differently.
He's not even the racist guy who became a zombie in Walking Dead anymore, he's Yondu. But then again he died too
I remember him more as the rascist on walking dead
He is also the asshole that got John Cusak to throw the world series.
Sea of Love 1989
I always wear scuba gear when I rock climb. My cliff jumps are so powerful that I always land miles out in the ocean.
"You deserve all the bats sir." Makes my day SO much better. Makes me lol and I rarely do that.
Hahaha glad it gave you some giggles :)
Oooh man I love this movie! A friend of mine's dad climbed crazy cliffs like that. One of his friends actually died climbing a cliff, he was alone and fell. Every time i watch this movie I think of her dad telling us how guilty he felt for not being with him when he was climbing. Still love this movie!
Hey that guy that survived with them is a goon in Above The Law🤣 he’s in the bar scene that Seagal busts up🙌🏾
Interesting fact: My Dad and his brother were involved in the stunts of this movie, including the plane transfer scene, When they got involved in the stunt, my dad had to parachute from the plane (not sure if it was a cut scene, or if it was just involved in the safety aspect). They misjudged the windspeed, and he landed so hard that he broke both his legs and smashed his knee to pieces. Because if this film, he now has a totally metal and plastic right knee,
That old dude's painting of a banana eating a monkey is actually a masterpiece! Nobody is going to change my mind
Hey I got a eighth of some gorilla glue here that will change your mind
@@samholdsworth420 send it on over and I will watch the movie again as I paint a banana eating a monkey that is painting a picture of Sly Stallone hanging off a cliff by his pecker
@@samholdsworth420 An 8th of gorilla glue is the only reason I appreciate that painting.
The proto-NFT
I love the way this piece subverts the viewers expectation that a monkey would eat the banana.
It’s fun to point out some of the technical issues with Cliffhanger, but it’s also fun to take this cheesy action classic at face value. 👍
The Cliffhanger opening is like Swordfish opening, you can feel it's gonna go bad right out of the gate
For some reason as a kid I was really looking forward to this movie coming out. I have no idea why lol
Yeah, it was a big event for me too.
Me too. Of course, being so young I had to wait a year after cinema release before my parents could rent it for me on VHS. Worth the wait though…I adored this film and it’s still one I watch at least once a year.
Because the trailer was awesome. That's always why you were really excited to see disappointing movies that weren't attached to a franchise you already liked.
The trailers were pretty intense.
"Get off my back Qualaind!"
'Off? I haven't even got on it. Yet...'
When I watch this movie now as an adult, being that it was one of my favourites as a child. I see them belay each other without attachments in this movie and always think to myself now... "Did the people who made this movie REALLY THINK! That when someone holds another end of the rope when you climbing... That it acts like some magical tether? Where when you hold on the other person cannot fall?!". Fucking mental movie, still love it! I mean fuck me it had Sylvester Stallone, Michael Rooker and John Lithgow!
Despite it's flaws, it's an entertaining studio film. Great score!
Fun review!
12:51
I watched the movie specifically to see the gap jump. Action movies like this was normal for me. I watched specifically for the crazy shit they'd do
Glad to see you do this one finally! Hilarious as usual, but also enjoyed hearing you talk about a subject you are passionate about, it adds something extra to the video. :)
Thanks friend! :)
I was having a crappy morning but then I saw this. Thank you for making me laugh, sir. I hope you have a wonderful day!
I hope your day gets better!
Finally! A review that tackles the important questions about a mindless action film! Is it technically accurate regarding the esoteric minutia surrounding its... I don't care how rock climbing is really done.! No one does except for people who would already know. Reminds me of the time I tried to watch Jaws with a surly fisherman and a rogue shark!🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I watched this in the theater when it came out ( as a 12 yr old)..on side note I also watched "Stop or my mom will shoot" the year before ...honestly enjoyed them both...👍
Also like how stallone is practically hypothermic and a flimsy cotton shirt gives him a miracle recovery :)
"Chuck E. Cheese when they run out of beer." I felt that.
Redeye you got some of the best commentary out here
Aww thanks friend :)
@@RedEyeReviews no thank you sir and I love your Steven Seagal impressions
The first part of the movie is intense. If I recall correctly, Hal(Michael Rooker)took an inexperienced climber on a very dangerous climb to impress her. Sly did what he could, but I think the situation quickly went bad. I just remember watching the movie and thinking Hal (Yondu)was the one who put them in that situation.
Other random memories:
- The million dollar stunt was kind of distracting because it was very obviously a stuntman doing a stunt very deliberately.
- I was disappointed the huge jump from the trailer wasn't in the movie, but I could see why test audiences would laugh.
- I think when the lady villain initially calls for help, she adds some detail at the end that impresses John Lithgow.
- Had a crush on Janine Turner.
From what I remember that detail she included was that a kid needed some insulin but yeah that whole thing felt way more like Hals fault.
@@bigbearkat2010 Yeah, she added the insulin thing so that they didn't wait until the storm passed.
Billy needed it lol
I joined my high school rock climbing club a year after this movie came out. Not because of the movie, even though it was awesome as a teen, but they needed one more person to make it even, as there was only 3 people in the club and needed 4 minimum, my friend, his girlfriend and the teacher in charge. So I was roped in, even though I hate heights (thought it would be a good way to get over it - did it work? yes and no, still hate heights but ok if safely clipped in) and had some fun and thrilling climbs around the region at some really amazing places.
I saw this in the theater with a climber. He laughed a lot, too.
It's awesome to hear that you're a climber! There's nothing that makes you shake your head more than when movies botch the simple stuff you know about. I avoid most stuff with hospitals in them now because of it. That being said... that makes great material for comedic reviews 😂
Yeah! I used to climb a couple times a week but then I started to play hockey and climbing has taken a back seat the past few years. But still love it. Oh man I can only imagine! I've been told that Scrubs was the most accurate hospital show on TV. But most of them are just flat out wrong
@@RedEyeReviews scrubs is the most acurate in therms of social dynamik in hospital, problems of the charactere ect. The Medical scene are good, but for emotional reason some medical scene are soooo wrong. But it is one of my favourite series. And you cane enjoy scrubs as a medical profesion, mutch more then orhers medical drama series. (Sry for my bad english).
@@RedEyeReviews It warms my cold Canadian heart to hear you’re a hockey player.
@@Hirnknaker No need to apologize. Your English is fine. I understood your comment completely.
There's a UA-camr named Doctor Mike that always complains about the medical dramas always being inaccurate, especially never doing chest compressions.
You’re wrong, Redeye. Your videos are _never_ long enough! Also, you missed the best part! How Stallone was somehow able to catch a goddamn wild rabbit to attach the tracking device to it. He caught a _wild fucking rabbit_ with his *bare fucking hands!* 😂 Love this movie, climbing/reality inaccuracies and all!
Those movie is still badass. Regardless off the mistakes. And John Lithgow makes a really awesome villain.
My number one favorite movie of all time
I love making fun of movies as I watch them and this is one of my all time favorites to comment on. Well done.
"Its costs a fortune to heat this place" should've used the Seinfled music with that line. 👍😂
Fond memories of this one for the simple fact I watched it with my grandfather. I thought it was cool he wanted to watch this Stallone rated R action thriller with me even though I was in my early teens! My grandfather is actually who got me into the types of movies you cover, now that I think of it. He loved watching all of these 80s and 90s stupid-fun action flicks. Ah I miss him.
Awesome as always RedEye!
Only saw kid's movies on school field trips.Parents allways took us to flavor of minute action movies
The next movie Yondu is in with Stallone he won't be so lucky.
RIP Space Smurf 💙
Didn't realize that Yondu and the leader of the Ravagers used to be climbing buddies. Really deepens their relationship.
Stallone : i need to swim to the Titanic 🚢 to get it
Bad guys: take his wet suit and his oxygen tanks and sprinkle him with chum 1st
just to be safe
lol
"Maybe one day we'll watch Vertical Limit and you guys can watch me slowly go insane," he says at the exact moment I open a new tab and see his Vertical Limit upload.
You do understand RedEye and i say this with love. He has to first hammer in a spot to belay for her or anyone to belay from. If he is the first person to climb a spot there will be nothing to belay off of.
He can install his own hardware.
Great Redeye i put all the effort of a concerned subscriber in that comment just to hear you say you climb and you know all of this! I am sorry for being a part of the problem.
"I told you to call me Night Hawk." dying here
In the begining of the movie when Sarah falls to her death everyone needs to watch the face of Frank . Best acting actor ever. 👏🤣
Did he win a plethora of awards?
@@threatassessment606 No, but he did a lot of cocaine and felt like a winner anyway. Both before and after the scene!
Bro, so used to you reviewing Law Man. This is a breath of fresh air and a nice expertise on climbing. Also thanks for the bit of trivia ❤️
That bolt gun had me rolling
Cliffhanger was an awesome movie. Period
My number one favorite movie of all time
3:18 The pilot doesn't care if he shoots a hole through the window of the cockpit!
Before this movie, I only knew John Lithgow from Harry and the Hendersons. I never would have thought he could have played such a great bad guy.
When I watched it was "hey its Dick Solomon"
He was super creepy in Brian De Palma's "Blow Up" but I do prefer his 'goofy/nice' persona. I think a lot of scary actors turn out to also be funny due to a lack of inhibition - they're not worrying about 'what will people think?'
Ricochet w/Denzel. Lithgow is hilariously ❤less
Stallion is so hot the cold water evaporates 👀
I only climb mountains in my birthday suit when no one's looking....
Another gem of a “cliffhanger”
Idgaf... this movie is a guilty pleasure that I check back in on every few years
What a fun, stupid, little movie - you gotta love it. It could have used more Rooker, but he's a friend (okay, really friend-of-a-friend, but we've had beer together more than once, so that counts, right??), so I honestly think that about pretty much EVERY movie...
Cliffhanger? Could have used more Rooker.
GotG and/or The Suicide Squad? Definitely could have used more Rooker.
Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer? There were one or two scenes he wasn't in - could have used more Rooker.
The Godfather? He wasn't even in that, but let's be honest... It could have used more Rooker!
It seemed like it took until TWD for people to think he should be used more.
Oh, I love him! It's funny, I've been a fan since the '90s, but I don't remember where it started. It's insanely gratifying to see him get so much appreciation now.
You 4got The Replacement Killers(could have used an inordinately much more huge amount of...Mira Sorvino[bet u thought I was gonna say Rooker]...ok more, much more, very much more Rooker!)
Ron kauk and Wolfgang gullich were technical consultants on this movie. Their eyes must have permarolled for 3 years.
Sorry to break this to you Redeye. But have you seen 'Valley Uprising'? An awesome documentary about climbers in Yosemite. But Cliffhanger was written by a professional climber, one of the guys that climbed in Yosemite. He based the story on a cargo plane of weed that crashed and the climbers emptied it before the police could get up to it. Great video though Red, keep em coming mate.
Interesting Trivia... the British guy actually did the voiceover for Gaz in the videogame Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare
Don't forget the fact that the insurance company was probably right not to insure the stunt guy since he didn't make it to the door like they showed. A pocket of air knocked him off course for a second which was enough to blow him right past the door and land on the top of the plane where he flailed about for a moment trying to get back to the door. Eventually the smaller plane had to get out of the way and the stunt guy just detached himself and used one of his hidden parachutes to float to the ground.
ua-cam.com/video/X4kLKfkelrw/v-deo.html
That's the clip from back when they actually used to document how films were made.
I had no idea about this. Thank you for the extra details
“That’s it. Did I solve the case?” Bahahahaha!!! Another great job!
When I climb I like to wear my crush velvet gloves
The opening scene of this movie reminds of the raccoon scene in "Ace Ventura: When nature calls"
Chuck E. Cheese with no beer slayed me haha
the real question is: Would you take 1 million dollars to do that stunt? I think I might...but I might have second thoughts when I'm on the plane
I thought about that...he looked like he had a parachute ready! Made some good money for a death defying stunt! Well worth it!
You're killing with the impersonations! I absolutely love it 😂
Lol I had to do so many different takes of his voice.
had a good time as always "Hanging" Around for this Review :)
I wear a puffy pirate shirt when climbing cliffs, other times I wear my mothers giant bloomers......you know, anything that could potentially act as a sail if theres even a slight gust of wind.
Hahaha now THATS thinking ahead
You could imagine the gang of thieves discussing the elaborate aerial heist involving zip lines between planes. It never occurred to one of them to say 'you shoot the pilot. you shoot the guards then just fly under radar and land the plane somewhere else' :)
One of the best Stallones movies..!!!!!!
So the bad guys just happened to be “carrying a clunky radio” while supposedly lost during a hike? Lol, right. Great video 🤙!
I think he figured to himself, when he jumped off the mountain;"well, it worked for Rambo" 😁
Redeye I love the fact that you point out everything that they should have done which would have kept us from having the movie happen like the fact they could taking there time to do the Heist after killing all the agents on the plane .
13:26. You are absolutely right, dude!
Underrated film in my opinion
My number one favorite movie of all time
This is one of my guilty pleasure movies. I think it's great!
18:10 your question reminds me of a mountaineering game from the 80s. It was called Final Assault and made by Epyx. You set out on a mountaineering expedition and had to plan the whole thing. You could pack your ruck yourself OR you could let the computer pack it for you. But that was a silly thing to do because the computer would pack all kinds of silly things so you HAD to check your loadout. The only time I used the auto-packing option I found a microwave oven in the ruck but no rope. That would have made it difficult to summit Kilamanjaro for sure.
That horse couldn’t show his face to his mates after that show of “prowess” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
There is a notorious blooper in the scene when the woman falls, Michael Rooker screams in agony but the old guy behind him is laughing his ass off. So do we when we see it.
When I was a kid, I was really squeamish about blood. And of every movie that could've freaked me out at the time - horror movies and all - it was this one. I don't know why, because its not all that bloody, but I think it was just the 'realism' of the violence.
I can see that. The cable (and mostly bloodless) edits were a fun watch when I was like 14 but then I watched it uncensored on IFC a few years and was like "holy @#$!" at all the violence that got left out and I was then watching for the first time
Renny Harlin also directed Born American (1986). Check it out if you haven't seen it yet. Daylight and The Specialist are two other Stallone movies that should be featured on this channel.
Daylight= Cliffhanger in the sewer
Renny Harlin was the original prototype from which they spawned Michael Bay.
We got the word soccer from the Brits. It was still called soccer in England up until the 1980s and the fell out of favor. A 40 year old British man in 1993 using the word soccer is not nearly as unrealistic as it would be now.
So cool you are a climber, amazing eye red review. Little slice of laughter 😃
Never wear finger less gloves while climbing. But always bring a bolt gun.
Should have mentioned how much the score sounded like it came from Predator for some reason. But anyway, that jump over the cliff was epic. I would have preferred that over seeing him jump towards the camera with that face lol.
Anybody else remember how insanely hard the SNES Cliffhanger game was?
No
Until next time my RedEyed friends. Stay Happy and Stay Healthy!
This might be the only Stalone movie I ever saw in the theater. It was entertaining enough.
Feel free to put that quote on the next bluray release, Sly.
1st Rocky @ Drive in & Firstblood @ mall theater. Nothing after that, but bought last Rocky DVD(Rocky Balboa)Rambo(4 in🇲🇲)DVD& Judge Dreed DVD
(Have Karl Urban's Dreed also!)
Glad to see you've got round to doing Cinema Sins, Everything Wrong With... Die Hard on a Mountain.
probably your best yet. great work!
Speaking of Chuck E Cheese, was at one in Merrillville, IN near Gary, and a brawl broke out. Good times
I loved this movie when i was a kid.
My number one favorite movie of all time
Man, this vid was such a good laugh. Nice one man!!
It's Merle Dixon from The Walking Dead. 😂
That stalag tight line got me. Lol
Dude I forgot you were into rock climbing so I appreciated the knowledge on it...I loved how you used it to absolutely shit on this classic 🤣🤣🤣
Nothing beats your review of Vertical Limit 😆😆😆✌️
John Lithgow is an awesome villain!
I loved this movie as a kid and the video game had an awesome snowboarding level that was hard as shit lol
This is actually one of the best 90's action flicks. Lithgow is a phenomenal villain, there's zany one-liners, the score is great, Sly is badass, and the pacing is solid. Go watch it if you haven't
I remember the Ace ventura movie that mocked the opening scene . I felt more terrified when the racoon fell lol..but I was like 6 at the time
I wear a cape when climbing a cliff. So if I fall I can pretend I'm Superman.
Remember to always keep your hands inside the helicopter at all times
One of my favorite Sly quotes.
Cmon!!! Do Demolition Man! Man!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣❤️❤️❤️❤️ I neber realized how hokey this movie was 🤣🤣🤣🤣 once again redeye, you made me night 👌🏻
