I genuinely love Van Damme and part of it is the way he's embraced the ridiculousness of his earlier films now he's older. Quite a few of his newer stuff is close to parody and the guy clearly has a sense of humour and is very self aware. He's literally the polar opposite of Seagulhead with his almost permanant frown. Even when Seagal has spent years slating Van Damme as he does basically anyone Van Damme just responds by making a joke about how he doesn't think Steven likes him which is a shame but he'd happily make a movie with him and thinks he has good charisma. Jean Claudes real name is Jean Claude Cammile Francois Van Varenberg. He changed it because he wanted it to sound more like wam bam. Also hilarious and brilliant.
@@RedEyeReviews aye Jean Claude really strived for his fame. Moved to America and slept in cars stalking film producers. Sure there's some ego there hence how many films found a reason to have two Van Dammes' haha but his humility and sense of humour make him pretty cool to me.
Thanks for this. Van Damme is like the more likeable version of Seagal. BLOODSPORT is one of my favorites of his. The big guy is Bolo Yeung. A Chinese martial arts actor and stuntman. The guy has been around for decades. I am sure Bruce Lee fans recognize him from ENTER THE DRAGON. He was also in another Van Damme film named DOUBLE IMPACT.
In addition to that, Bolo Yeung and Van Damme became good friends, hence his appearance in other movies. Of similar interest is another competitor in the kumite played by Michael Qissi (old friend of Van Damme's who wanted to become an action star with him) who is the same actor who played Tong Po in the film Kickboxer.
I was born in 1988, when this movie came out. As a child I watched it again and again on old VHS. Thanks to it I started do karate when I was 10 years old. And 13 years after my start I became World karate champion. :) I know that this movie is little bit funny in the way it is done, but for me it means litterally whole world :)
Fun Fact: Bolo Yeung (Chong Li) was 53 years old when he played the antagonist of this film. On top of his martial arts film career he was also a champion bodybuilder. The name "Bolo" was a nickname he got from his character in Enter the Dragon. Supposedly Bruce Lee loved the name and continued to call him Bolo, hence why he kept the nickname. Seriously, Bolo Yeung is a physical phenom in his own right. The man was more fit in his fifties than most of us probably are in our late twenties! XD
I have to be that ONE guy, Van Damme also starred in No Retreat No Surrender a few years before Bloodsport and a few after Breakin' just thought I would get that out there because his role in NRNS was highly underrated no matter if it was dubbed on not lol. Them, I was in shock!, when I came too Dux was gone, the little mouse scurried past me in a panic, most likely fleeing from the sound of the old lady screaming hysterically over the corpse of her 5 kitties.
On another youtube video somebody made a comment with the name chong li with his picture as his default picture. So I started commenting memorable lines from Bloodsport under his comment and within a day a TON of people did the same and I never realized how many great catch phrases this movie had. As well as how popular Bloodsport truely is even today. Yes the acting/storyline etc are laughable at times but the kind of laughable that makes you love it. Other than Bloodsport my favorite karate hero movie is the Perfect Weapon with Jeff Speakman. Please review that next. Please
Back in the days, here in Brazil, it was common place to translate film titles based either on actors previous success or inspired in similar successes. Sometimes, older titles from an actor or actress famous would suffer from these transactions. For instance, "Back to the future" was a hit and had a direct translation to Portuguese ("De volta para o futuro"). Soon after, some distributer brought Teen Wolf with the excellent title "O garoto do futuro" (, Boy from the future). JVD films would suffer from the same curse: "Blood sport" became "The great white Dragon" (O Grande dragão branco) [anything martial art musr relate to dragons/China/Japan/HK]. The film was a hjt! Right after that, they brought "Lion heart" that became "White Lion" (Leão Branco). And Cyborg became..... "Cyborg - dragon from the future" (Ciborgue - o dragão do futuro). Cheers!

They made some shootings actually in Kowloon (the "walled city" in Hong Kong, where the sun never shone in because the buildings were so close to each other. It was literally and figuratively a dark place to live. It was destroyed in 1993) and its very rare. (the parts when they go in to the fighting ground) I really like the character of Ray Jackson he is a good guy and a real friend in the full movie. And to the 'I wave a flag" thing - I was a member of our kung fu school's lion dance team. But I never was in the lion (only the best can do that, because the lion is the symbol of the school, and I never was the best) I only played the cymbals. Its not a big thing, but was a big thing for me, so maybe the flag waver guys were the same. They were not good enough for the fight, but could do something for the ceremony. (and they did not risk their life, and that's cool too :D)

It made me take up karate and actually do some sparring. Great film. The music is best for the time. Still listen to it when working out.

Everything about this movie and the backstory has been disproven 1000 times over. Frank’s entire life story plus the limited was a lie. The guy wasn’t smart either because his “winning trophy“… It was purchased with his home address listed and directly by him. That being said it doesn’t change the fact that this movie is incredible.
I'd love to see you review Fat guy goes nutzoid, yes it's a real 80s movie from Tromaville that's rarely covered for a cult classic and is perfect for your comedy style, btw the Mentos bit had me spitting out my drink laughing.
🤣👍
Oh my what a movie title lol
