Really wish we got the director's cut of this movie to see everything that was cut out of it.
Yeah, the Cobra Cut.
Screw the MPAA for toning down the violence.
Me too; I already love the movie but it’s always tempting to wonder What could’ve been with these things
You read my mind. Forget the action figure. Stallone needs to give us all the footage!
Would've been a great addition to the Scream Factory release.
That pizza cutting scene with the scissors was ICONIC 😄
What kind of idiot freezes leftover pizza, then doesn't defrost it?
The kind of idiot that subscribes to the local paper so he can throw it out daily in disdain. And the kind of idiot who writes a scene like that to show Cobra views the news media as bullshit, yet in the next scene he's watching TV news.
Lol me too.
I actually did that with some day old pizza, just because I saw this movie as a kid 😅😂😂
Thank you for mentioning the most iconic pizza action scene in movie history.
Too bad the good stuff ends there. The gun, the car, the pizza.
21:16 It's interesting to learn Cobra wasn't that big of a hit in the West. For us, kids growing up beyond the Iron Curtain, it was an integral part of "golden age of VHS" repertoire, together with all the Rambos, Commandos and Predators - and is fondly remembered to this day by people in their 40s.
I'm a 40-something Westerner and apparently I have the same taste in movies as Cold War Europeans lol
Absolutely true!
Oh, absolutely. I can safely say it was one of the bigger hits here as well (ex-Yugoslavia), with Predator, Rambos, Terminators and Mad Max-es. One more that was apparently bigger here than the US was American Ninja series. Shockingly few people in the US watched or cherished those as much as we did.
The Rambo movies actually got official theatrical releases in China back in the day, and the Terminator and Robocop movies were shown plenty of times on TV too.
I always wondered how people on the other side of the iron curtain felt about Rocky 4. At the end when everyone in the Soviet arena is cheering Rocky we’d always laugh thinking in real life they’d be off to the gulag for that.
Easily one of Stallone's best and most underrated films. Brain Thompson as The Night Slasher is a very ruthless and intimidating villain. Loved the music Angel of the City.
That’s my robot kink
Top 5 villain for me. Shame they did him dirty at the premiere.
Shao Kahn!!
Underrated gritty classic from the 80s. For some similar, but other very different reasons I love this movie as much as Tango & Cash.
I enjoy this one more
@@dnasty312 really depends on my mood :)
Tango and cash is a superb film
I know it’s not held in the highest regard by most people but I could watch this film ever day and never get tired of it. Also the pizza and scissors thing is incredible.
Iconic scene #pizza #scissors
Can you...Pig?
This comment makes me never want to watch Cobra again.
@@Strangestthing1 I’m proud to have changed your life somehow.
Someone better tell me why Cobra always has a match in his mouth.
I get the feeling with Cobra there’s a whole other movie on the cutting room floor. It may not be a masterpiece but I always feel like I’m watching a long trailer for the real movie.
Watching these actors getting old gives me a big hit of sadness. :(
I was maybe seven years old when I saw Cobra (too young really) and it was pretty much the greatest thing I’d ever experienced. Used to go on the ferry across the channel on holiday every summer and winter and it had a cinema in it, staff couldn’t give a flip so they’d just let me in to watch anything, Porkies, Robocop, Predator, Running Man etc. I’d come back to school and basically explain each movie to my friends… those were the days.
AGREED!👍👍
You did a Masterpiece with this Retrospective!! In Germany they named the Movie as "The City Cobra" and because of that they Re-Released the Schwarzenegger Movie "Raw Deal" and named it "The City Shark" 😂 OMG i love the 80s
Here in Sweden, the movie was banned for a long time. The distributor submitted shorter and shorter versions, but it kept getting banned. Finally, a version that was only 65 min long was approved for release in cinemas and on home video. It wasn't until the DVD came out years later that the uncut version became avalible.
I don't care what anyone says, this movie is AWSOM, one of my favourite Sly films 🍕 ✂️
I wish Cobra and Snake Plissken met for a beer and bashing up session back in the day 🐍🐍
Yes an absolutely underrated Stallone classic!
22:51 😂 I was waiting for that "out of character" moment from you Oliver, and you did not disappoint 🤣🤣🤣
This movie was so hated back in the 80's. I'm glad it has a cult status nowadays, or at least something close to it. The real gem!
Cobra (1986), Nighthawks (1981) and Lock Up (1989) are Stallone's most underrated films from the 80's.
Completely agree, Nighthawks is criminally overlooked and Lock Up is crazy underrated
Nighthawks is a gem, with a cameo by Jamie Gillis US porn star.
Nighthawks is criminally underrated (Cliffhanger too tbf) when I watched it i was shocked it hasn’t been re-evaluated or at least became a big hit its just such a simple yet great idea. Also any movie that gets Rutger Hauer playing the villain like The Hitcher is fucking awesome by default.
i didn't realise he did Nighthawks...... where was i? I just watched the trailer.... gonna watch that now :)
Critics disliked the film. It did well at the box office. It was a staple on cable TV for years. Not a cult classic. It's just one of Sly's lesser films.
Another great Harper production. Your enthusiasm and attention to detail for essentially rubbish forgotten films is legendary
Fascinating stuff, sir. Poor Mr Thompson having to buy his own ticket!
Yeah, what a shame.
That’s Warner Bros. for ya. 🤷🏾♂
One of the few true art movies of this world.
Great review….I was lucky enough to watch Sylvester directing when I snuck onto a movie set in 2002 in Hollywood. He was relentless, that’s for sure! PS at 13:01 the gun is a Finnish 9mm ‘Jatimatic’, pronounced ‘yarti’ (not ‘jatti’)
I always greatly enjoy your detailed throwbacks. Most of your reviews are about films I watched as a kid and many of them get me to re-watch the ones I've since forgotten. Thanks for the great content!
I would love a full soundtrack/score of this!!!! This movie is so good lol!
I can't believe I missed this movie for so many years. It really captures the essence of '80's' cool and all the silliness therein. Also cutting a pizza with scissors is badass.
This was one of my favorites growing up back then. The horror elements got to me more being younger and more susceptible. That car chase is so badass.
I was a little kid when this movie came out and I was SCARED!! The villain gang was so scary, specially after Cobra's info about the crimes happening in the beginning!!
THANK YOU!
Grew up with this movie, being Mexican we were always late to new pop culture course and blessing since i was born in late 90s but grew up with 80s movies and music
Great Video as always, Oliver! COBRA - EASILY one of the Greatest Action Movies of the 80s and my third favourite Sly film after FIRST BLOOD and ROCKY IV. This is absolute apex 80s, action awesomeness. Classic!
The part that I like the most is the supermaket which was really unnerving at the time. In my opinion, the film could have run for another 10 or 20 minutes. In any case, this is a much better film than what we get today, say the FFs.
Your production quality is amazing. Effects, editing, writing, all of it. Cobra is one of my favorites, I was 12 when it came out. It's nice to see a good thorough review on a personal favorite!
I watched this on the weekend and give it a spin at least 4 times a year, i love it lol, first saw it with my grandfather on vhs back in the late 80's ... would love to see Sly go back in and directors cut the film
Cobra somewhere between genuinely good and deeply deeply tasteless.
As another viewer has said a director cut may add more to it, rather than the 90min version available at present.
Cobra's biggest fault lies in its Dirty Harry lite presentation, with nothing but killing cobretti but killing, at least Harry Callaghan has a backstory of sorts(cribbed by lethal weapon ).
A great review of a so so movie
Flawed as it might be, I still remember many scenes from this movie, unlike those from many modern action movies.
Re-teamed with the star/writer and filmmaker who gave us the Oscar nominated hit "Rambo: First Blood Part II" (1986) for Lionsgate/Studio Canal,
now comes "Cobra" (1986) for Warner Bros/Sony Pictures Entertainment, the film's latter was an financial success.
I love this movie. Great job as always Oliver.
Love the logo at the start Oliver!
This is my favorite channel on UA-cam.
I wish Hollywood would hire you to cut trailers.
Could you do a video on the 1990 Night of the living Dead remake?
Cobra is probably the most underrated 80's action movie.
i am once again humbly requesting a retrospective for Short Circuit and/or Short Circuit 2.
the filmmaking process of creating & filming johnny 5 would be incredibly interesting, in addition to all the other story, acting, and production facts you research and deliver. how about an hour long retrospective featuring both films? lmao. specifically highlighting the amazing work the production team did to bring a convincing robot to life in the 80s.
Oliver, with this video, you have cemented your reputation as a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you. THANK YOU!
Saw this at the Orion Theater in Naha, Okinawa, Japan with my then girl friend Minako. It was a double feature with Goldie Hawns 'Wildcats'. 👍🏻
I really believe Brian Thompson did an excellent job as the villain, it's aparent that he didn't have much direction, but he cobbled together a haunting performance, He was actually terrifying. Always loved this movie
Most Underrated Stallone Character & Most Under appreciated Stallone Movie,Loved Every Second of This Movie 🐍
Wish we could've gotten a director's cut of Cobra.
Cobra: "so, whadaya think?"
Brigette: "It looks a little like him"
Cobra: "it's meant to be you, but OK"
I freaking love this film! Thank you Oliver Harper for making this retrospective. I remember the vhs was on the shelf at Tesco and I’d read the back cover every week when I went shopping with my Mom. I was a massive Rocky fan at the time and he got Rocky III and IV on vhs and wanted this next. Lol. My Mom wouldn’t let me get it haha so had to wait to see it on TV.
That sketch of the night stalker always cracks me up :D
Also I always thought Brian Thompson looked a bit like Arnold. Not like his twin brother, more like a distant relative. Definitely similar facial features. I think that's why they picked him for the role, so Sly can in a way kill Arnold on screen, because of their rivalry back in the 80s. I could be wrong though.
I remember watching this movie as a kid on video at my friends home in the 80s. We loved it, because the horror/slasher elements were so realistic for us, although there was just a cut down version available in Germany back then. Since then I rewatched it from time to time, I still like this flick. Angel in the City is on my workout playlist, great Tepper Song.
Love this film! Id love to see the longer cut. I always thought the night slasher was inspired by the richard ramirez murders too. Especially as the news report that stallone watches while cleaning his gun describes exact scenarios and victim descriptions that ramirez actually committed.
Loved this film as a kid although it's more of a guilty pleasure now. The villain was so memorable. Brain Thompson is such a sweet guy in interviews though :D
_Brain_ Thompson 😄
@@chiefscheider lmao. I do that sometimes
"Stallone was squandering his talent and vast potential" - Little did they know Over The Top was to follow!
I love this film. Such a classic feature!!!
Back in the mid 80's I had Cobra and The Terminator on the same VHS tape - both films have many similarities and make a great double feature.
I've been a subscriber for so long and I love the intros, honestly feels like a trailer but really well done.
I liked this movie as a 12 year old. I love this movie as a 49 year old! Cheers
You can see where Hot Shots Part Deux got at least some of its inspiration right here. This film showed me the difference between Sly and Arnie. The former all so serious all the time and the latter more nuanced. I just could not see Stallone doing something like Commando - which I loved - because although Arnie plays it straight it is for laughs which is in the dialogue and brilliantly conveyed by Rae Dawn Chong.
This and Commando - what a double bill…
Stallone is such an underrated actor! The GOAT!
Thanks for making this video Oliver! Cobra is fantastic! Still is.
Absolutely underated classic. Yes, the tone is uneven, yes the humour falls flat, and yes it turns into a stallone shoot-a-thon for the last third. But man, it's nasty, it's cool, and it's a comic book on film. Love COBRA, took me years but I got there...thank you Alice.
I used to love when they’d play this on tv and get to see scenes that weren’t on the vhs.
And the car chase is so cool, i believe the Cobra 50 Merc was stolen in the late 80’s and recovered only a few years ago.
Another great review by Oliver of an 80s classic. Keep em coming! You're one of the best reviewers on youtube.
Every time the Oliver Harper logo comes on at the beginning, it gives me the will to keep going. This is the only channel that truly and honestly makes me feel like a kid again
One of the few movies I loved during the VHS-era and still love to this day ❤
I’ve been craving Sylvester Levay’s musical scores to be released for years, same with Jan Hammer’s. Jan Hammer has had albums of the main themes he did from Miami Vice released but there is much more from that show and movies he’s done that haven’t been but that’s more than can be said for Levay’s works.
I'm 43 and was aloud to throw this on whenever I wanted on videotape recorded from HBO as a kid, lol.. what was my family thinking! ....ahhhh, the 80's
Informative on cobra making of.
Probably one of the most iconic VHS covers for me. A lot of this movie is cheesy and over the top .. which is why i love it. Also this is about the only time I've found Brigitte Nielsen attractive 😂
2:14 = 80s perfection. Great music & action ftw.
Tango & Cash next?
The scene where Stallone is on the truck and the cult are willingly driving up and being gunned down is hilarious. The 50 caliber sound effective for a 9mm machine gun is a cherry on the top.
This is a really well put together video, thank you so much
Where I live this movie is not known as “Cobra” but as “Stallone Cobra” (probably due to the poster). Because of this, when I was a kid, and Stallone was so badass to me, I thought it was a semi-biographical flick. 😂
I had a double pack dvd that had this and Tango and Cash. It was incredible.
The intro itself is worth a subscribe and like button. Better than the actual Cobra trailer i guess. Also the bike chase scenes were shot during the day, because the shooting locations were mosquito infested during the night.
i love your stuff oliverharper, always fasinating with great footage. keep em coming! best wishes from ireland- aron
21:39 I've always loved this shot!
Cobra is a very flawed film, but there's something about it that gives it a special place in my heart. For all the fact that Stallone was a pretty big star by this point, Cobra totally comes off like some cheap and grotty little 80s B-movie, which is what's so great about it for me.
“You’re the disease, and I’m the cure”
I don’t give a damn. I love this movie. This is how I remember Stallone. He looked, I think his best. The glasses. Awesome.
Loved you putting the games in Cobra's TV !
love the Cannon intro ..nice
I hope they release the uncut version in 4K.Its a good movie but above that its a very COOL movie. the design , the setting , the character ...just oozes cool
Great timing of the film now on cult status. It 's still a extraordinary action thriller. R.I.P. Rene Santoni.
The car was built for the movie by a guy named Eddie Paul, he had an insane deadline for building multiple copies using 1949 and 1950 Mercurys, plus one for Sylvester Stallone's private collection. According to him, he got wind of the company producing the movie having some financial troubles, so he decided to hold onto the cars until he got paid. The story goes that a truck came one day, and the driver went into Paul's office handing him the keys, saying that he won't be leaving until the agent that had his money would show up, but asked him for keys to the cars so he could line them up and load as soon as he gets a green light. Then a dude claiming being that agent called Eddie Paul saying that he got lost on the way to his shop, and while Paul was explaining how to get there, he could hear the cars speeding around the corner. Apparently the movie company had drivers waiting and as soon as Paul was distracted they simply stole the cars...
Great as always. I think I only caught bits of this one whenever it was on one of the "Encore" channels and saw a "Bad Movie Beatdown" episode on it. I will say the movie does look like a fun watch. With the combination of hardcore action/attitude mixed some horror/slasher film elements. Might look out for this one. :)
As a dane, I must admit that this is the high point of Brigitte Nielsens (formerly Stallone) career.
Great retrospective, I love the Harper/Canon intro. Let's hope Arrow decides to do a director's cut.
$25 million? Jeez. Seems like a $5 million dollar budgeted movie.
Really informative video. Nice work 🙂
Love your reviews. Solid as always.
Yeah, this movie is 80's sleaze, the story and protagonist is ret@rded but I love it for nostalgia. The music, the aviator glasses. Pure vibes. 3:57 - this review was spot on. 19:00 - 😆 I had no idea they made a game for this flick. Thnx Ollie.
Absolute classic and one that got regular play when I was a kid. Oh man, I need to get another 1911 to put Cobra grip panels, lol.
I like the opening scene with the crim riding the kwaka Z1R to the shops
Movies For Guys Who Like Movies on TBS (back in the day) was the reason why I watched this film.
I love ❤️ this review so much , this motion picture was one of the greatest movie of my childhood like Over the top , Rambo 2 and Commamdo ! Cobra is legendary in my memories I was 11 years old
Great analysis! Managed to watch it yesterday just in time! Really wish there was a director’s cut; combining the slasher horror with cop film elements was pretty ahead of it’s time at that point.
The Gosling book was not originally titled "Fair Game"; it was "A Running Duck".
Just picture this movie (or the Baldwin/Crawford film) named "A Running Duck".
Cobe is one of the best action movie from Sylvester Stallone. 🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍
It's a fun film but definitely in Stallone's lower tier of output.
Good review as always Oliver. Loving your snippet about the home computer games; it was indeed great on the ZX Spectrum. Such a funny game that was also very playable.
I love this movie and I love The Cannon Group. Thank you for doing this retrospective!
Awesome review. I was a big cobra fan as a kid. Stallone hit a high mark with this movie.
Can you please do a Radio Flyer review? The ending is so ambiguous. Did he die? Was there even a Bobby? A lot of questions.
I love all Sly films i grew up watching his films BUT this movie has something unique that made me love it so much! It's the Night Slasher! Probably the only antagonist in all Stallone films that he doesn't care about money, wealth, fame, revenge. All the Night Slasher cares about is blood and fear! Brian Thompson made this movie! He was so intimidating! And keep in mind that this movie was released just 9 months after the capture of the Night Stalker Richard Ramirez which the character of Night Slasher is actually based on!!
Another great review, Oliver
Cobra was indeed a Cannon film releaded through Warner Bros. The film starts with Warner Bros presents a Cannon Group Inc. Golan.Globus production.
