Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that the guy behind Hector ordered a twelve-piece bucket of chicken and jumbo fries, and was about to order even more before Hector lit his cigar. What a unit.
This is the episode where Lyle's wife told him he's in danger and he should consider contacting the police. That's when Lyle gave his epic "I am the danger, I am the one who knocks" speech.
You're in the game son. Just when you think you're out, they pull you back in. "I know you're on vacation, but can you come in tomorrow? We're understaffed."
I always thought Hector was jealous of Gus in a different way when it comes to each owning a business. Hector had no customers that we really see at his establishment, yet Gus' restaurant is filled with happy people and families. Just another thing Gus has that Hector does not. I always loved when Nacho gives that look regarding the family leaving. Little moments.
I don’t think Hector cares about that, perhaps only in the sense that it provides a better front and makes Gus seem more “professional”, similar to how Hector gets triggered by Gus’ neatly organised cash at Eladio’s. It’s just another case of Hector viewing Gus’ less barbaric and cultured approach to the trade over his more “traditionalist” and old school approach as a threat to his own worth to the cartel and thus his own perceived value.
It could also be some more petty rivalry too. Like he's thinking, "even his fake business is doing better than my fake business, and I owned an ice cream store in New Mexico."
After watching Better Call Saul I kind of feel like Gus and Hector are like Jimmy and Chuck. I had the same thought! The place couldn't be more different from the little restaurant where he goes to do his cartel business. That place is quiet and dark, and the staff doesn't bat an eye at Tuco pummeling an old man in the parking lot, or Lalo waltzing into the kitchen to make his own tacos. This place here is all well lit and busy, and full of people who have no idea that the place is linked to the cartel. It couldn't more against the grain from Hector's point of view.
I love that Hector is trying to act all bad and tough and wants to intimidate the workers and they're just feeling immensely awkward almost the entire time over some random old fart walking around behind the counter.

@@The-Deadite I think it was mostly that Nacho realized they were stepping into the civilian world, and needlessly escalating the situation was gonna end up with the police showing up in force.
I'm kinda surprised that Gus was able to keep this front going for so long. With Hector, the cousins, Nacho, Walt coming into his restaurant and constantly requesting to speak with Gus and looking weird and all, you'd think some employees or customers would have noticed over the years that something was off with the place.
He probably paid well above the industry standard. It likely didn’t happen very often. Gus was a prominent figure in the city too. But yeah I would’ve been freaked out working there lol
Later this episode Gus vaguely explains that he knew Hector and the Salamancas back in Mexico and that they harassed him for money back then. I guess they understood he had history with dangerous people but just didn't want to get involved in that.
That small scene at 2:20 with the woman and child trying to leave, being blocked and Nacho's nonverbal communication to let them go was always a favorite of mine
Hector: “I’ll wait. While I wait, I'll have two number 9s, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45s, one with cheese, and a large soda."
Amazing how Hector can cause such a stir only being himself. Ask for the boss, light a cigar, say "eh". Notice how he steps aside after Lyle gives the bottom line argument telling him that there are other customers waiting. "Oh kay. I won't step on your game. But I will wait in the back. (pat pat)" Classic.
Scarface, he was the guy trying to blow up the kids in the car and Tony Montana shot him in the head and killed him. Hector was amazing in that movie too.
Ironically Gus was probably wondering what took Don Hector so long? His plan to take revenge for Santiago had started and damaging Hectors supply line and making him depended on him was part of the plan.
I always liked how this scene shows the differences on how Hector and Gus run their businesses, and why Gus is successful while Hector isn't. Gus hides in plain sight and works on building himself up as a respected and influential member of the community while treating his employees with kindness and respect, which makes them loyal to him and his operation run smoothly. Hector acts like an old school gangster and barges into the restaurant with his goons, acts like he owns the place, and scares everyone thinking it makes him respected while not realizing that it just paints a giant target on his back and draws unnecessary attention to his operation.
The reason why hector patted lyle's back because he saw something that even though he is afraid he is still standing up for the restaurant, after a while when gus tells his employees to leave he still asks gus if he is okay, my man was brave.
You can tell Nacho was a respected guy among the Salamancas, both with the way Tuco would hear him out and how Arturo immediately backs down when Nacho shows his disapproval.
I love that little pat Hector gives Lyle on the back. Hector can tell he's not in the game, and he's a bit naïve, but even he respects the loyalty Lyle has to Gus' operation, even if he's not aware of the fact that it's a front.
Hector has always been a very strong character, despite him being very frail (physically, later on). He died on his own terms after having killed his biggest enemy. Nobody could defeat the Salamanca Family boss.
