Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

He was introduced in such a great way. The most stressful episode in all of the show, and he’s just this weird sweaty old guy in a wheelchair who doesn’t speak. Employee of the Year
Better dial Lyle
Hector is among the only few characters who got old in a life of crime. Which, something Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul tell us, rarely happens. So whatever he must've done during his cartel days must've been some real gangsta stuff. And even in the end, he died having the last laugh, having his revenge.
He survived for 17 years in prison too. Considering how hot the competition must be, it's impressive that some rival cartel didn't try to get him shanked.
Hes by far my favorite character. Ive watched the "Salamanca Blood! Salamanca Moneyyy!!!!" Clip a thousand times lmao
I mean, no one said they didn't try to. Most likely they did multiple times. And yet here was hector...

A organism that’s perfectly vile for a vile world
I love how he hated Walt as he thought he killed Tuco but changed his mind & partnered with him to kill his longtime enemy at the cost of his own life
It's not like he had anything else in his life. Gus pretty much orchestrated the death of his family members and took control of everything he helped build. He had nothing left to live for.
It was such a win-win deal for Hector.

The flashback with the twins might be more unsettling to me not because of the near drowning, but it ruled out my assumption that something was always wrong with them. Like that they were near mute sociopaths forever. Seeing them just be normal children is extra woof.
Children will always be children. Until sometime traumatic happens
I’m sure that Tuco and Lalo were also once normal kids before Hector taught them to be evil gangsters. Tuco’s meltdown about Gonzo betraying him hints at a pretty bad childhood.
@@capncake8837 Tuco definitely was. Lalo however... I don't think he was born evil, but I do think he was born different.
@@ecthox-1mork909 Probably, now that I think about it.
Honestly love how in that flashback the chair Hector is sitting in looks like a wheel chair in its design.
Small detail but I loved how nacho shook his head to let the mother and son out as he understands what it's like wanting protect someone innocent as he does his father
There was a pretty good understanding that you only messed with people “in the game”. Even when Hector walked in the back of Pollos, he gave Lyle a tiny bit respect instead of just mob bossing his way through
He let them leave because he knew that stopping them could have very easily resulted in a police raid.
It also shows that hector did this on the fly.. he's people weren't informed he was gonna do this
@@brek2569you need to rewatch the show, at least since Lalo was introduced because Lalo told Nacho how Hector killed a hotel worker and peed on his body just because. So he did hurt people who weren't in the game.
It's always fascinating to me that Mike always knew how to not overstep his boundaries. He sat down when Hector allowed it. Then he still put his way through with the 50k. A real pro
"50.000, and the gon is yors"
UA-cam subtitles, wrote... 50.000 and the God is yours!!! I literaly thought Hector was giving his blessing along with the money. Talk about misleading media...
@@CODINE80 Pope Hector blessed the sinner 🤣🤣🤣
Great observation
“50,000, ana gunn is yors”
I'm still in awe at Hector's generosity. $50,000 AND a free gun? He even offered for his nephews to babysit Kaylee. THAT'S a gentleman right there.
Breaking Bad: “man Hector has it rough, I can’t believe they could do all that to an old man, he probably has his flaws but he doesn’t deserve all this”
Better Call Saul: “I think Gus went easy on him honestly”
What I wonder is how the cartel and Salamancas let Gus handle Hector's treatment. Surely they must've known that he would do some shady stuff.
@@spacemann1425 I guess the other higher ups didn't care about Hector that much now that he's in a wheelchair and saw him as a burden?
@@scottvelez3154 highly unlikely. For The Salamancas, at least, La Familia Es Todo. Maybe it's something I'm missing in BCS. Some details.
Maybe since Hector was being treated up North, it allowed Gus to manipulate his treatment.
@@spacemann1425 the point is that the Salamancas started losing their respect in the cartel
Don Eladio didn't care about them and straight up mocked Hector when he tried to warn them about Gus
The Salamancas built the cartel and the members still didn't respect them
@@isaacpianos5208 again, I don't think that's true. The Salamancas were the cartel. Eladio liked Lalo a lot. They had a ton of power.
Eladio spared Gus because there was no evidence. Bolsa usually liked to maintain peace. I don't think him "mocking" Hector meant a lot. Probably a common thing for them.
Either way, my point is, them aside, The Salamancas definitely could've or should've intervened.
I love the way Gus corrected his tie, just few seconds before he died. What a gentleman.
The power of OCD
He won. He saw hector die before his eyes. His final victory
@@user-rf8pi7re1feye* and besides, he didn’t want Hector to die; he had wanted to watch Hector sit helpless in a cage (the home) for the rest of his days. He only was going to kill Hector because he believed he had ratted to them.

"How you manage to live so long with a mouth like that?" Almost as if Hector is asking another grizzled old veteran why he's still around, knowing full well he's got a similar directness. Rest in piece to Hector Salamanca. He was a hard worker who always respected his bosses, he was honest and respectful, and a very well tempered man, aslo, he was great with kids and raised 4 of his nephews into very calm headed and friendly, normal men.

@thatguyap_ Joaquin was his grandson. How can so many clueless idiots exist.
I would describe him like Walter described Tuco: insane, degenerate piece of filth.
9:59 I realized Hector's future is foreshadowed on he chair he's sitting on, really cool
sooo so cool
When you look at it, Hector vs Gus is a Mom and Pop business vs a corporation
Hector does things his way, his family way, folds his money his way, does business his way
But when Gus shows up, when Gus starts performing, everything is business, quick, tight, neat, clean, untraceable
And Hector can’t compete, Lalo barely can
Well we don't know the details about how the cartel worked and it didn't work in just the business of transportation like Gus did.
Hector was, from start to finish, a thug who rose too high in the ranks. He was not a master player. He was a man of brute force. The fact that he survived as long as he did is incredible.
What show did you watch lol? Hector was pretty cunning when it came down to it. It was Hector who told Lalo to go after Gus's money, to make him worthless in Eladios eyes (which almost worked). It was Hector who told Lalo that he needed proof if he wanted Gus dead, when Lalo was ready to just kill Gus (which wouldve turned him into a traitor in Eladios eyes). It was Hector who always had the thought that Gus was still out for revenge.
RIP to this absolute legend. One of the best characters in the breaking bad universe, we'll all miss you
Hector respected Mike a lot more than he respected Gus
To be fair, Hector thought he had subdued Gus to the point where he would do nothing. That and he never liked Gus. Hector is just a mean old man.
2:07 The exact moment I became Nacho's fan 😇
same, i love the bits of humanity that Nacho shows earlier in the series, shows he's nowhere near as messed up as the Salamancas
Also why is that guy blocking the costumers, does he wanna alert the police lmao
To me he’s the most human out of most of the characters
Old post but the reason for keeping everyone put is because anyone could technically be working for fring and want to alert of him of the situation to better prepare for it. Secondly it's intimidating customers which is terrible for business and no one normal is going to eat where they feel is dangerous. So it's two parts security for their boss and to ruin Gus's family friendly image to hamper his business
If you listen to Mark Margolis' interviews and how good his English is you realize how convincing he was as Héctor when he put that accent to make himself sound like he is from Mexico, and how good he was when he played him in the wheelchair. Great actor.
He’s a Jew from Philadelphia. English is his native language.
Mark Margolis is awesome…he plays Hector perfectly!

Mike walking into the Lions Den asking Hector for 50k is the same as Walt's arc when he blew up Tucos crib.
Here after hearing the news. Rest in peace Don Hector 😢
I love how the brother at 1:20 red the situation immediatly and dipped from the scene.
Same. Very astute of him. Caught on very quick.
This is why Lalo was so threatening....
Hector was an old school gangster with his goons surrounding the perimeter...
The twins were sat silently looking like gangsters...
Either of these talk situations could've gotten Gus cover
Lalo on the other hand was a customer eating enjoying the food complimenting it, wanting to invest.... He kept Gus cover which was fast more dangerous imo!
Ill never get over how badass it is when Gus dies, Hector refusing to look at him then when he goes to give him the injection Hector looks at him in a “I’m just an old man please” kinda way which quickly turns to “check .. mate” with an evil grin before furiously pounding the bell with his finger setting off the bomb he’s sat on, and Gus realising last minute but its too late. Such a masterpiece this whole series is.
I interpreted the first look as pure bliss and happiness as he knows gus will be dead within seconds and he avenged his family
@@AY-qy4jn i think it's more anger, also the man hated gus enough to call him the n word with the bell in morse code
He's come a long way from being the "worm" hitman from Scarface to the terrifying Don of a Mexican of Cartel.
