    Very educational. Thank you.
I've seen some content about it, all of which explored the subject on surface level, highlighting the issue, but failing to dig deep enough as to WHY it's an issue. Your explanation makes sense given the environment in which people are expected to SPEAK lowly of themselves, but think HIGHLY of themselves simultaneously. That's like having the car in reverse while attempting to drive forward with a stick shift.
The fact that MORE Japanese AREN'T Hikikomori astonishes me. What we SAY about ourselves is often a reflection of how we THINK and FEEL about ourselves, so for the Japanese to separate the two is in itself worthy of deep study, because as you've said, it's an almost inhuman-like fortress of self-confidence that can only come from within to protect ones own words from destroying his/her self-esteem.

I don't have friends for many years, don't hang out, just visit a parent sometime. And I don't see any problem with that. Coz I don't feel comfortable with the people living around, simply don't want to adopt their habits of smoking, alcoholism, swearing, propaganda agenda. I might be a part of some community in the future, but I don't feel any desperate.

Hello from the Soviet Uzbekistan guys

I've heard of a certain "Humbleness" where people degrade themselves in any chance they can. However I would argue that kind of self-treatment is actually more selfish and less humble than what humbleness actually is. Many families endure "generational family problems" where people whom, out of woundedness, take part in self-depricating acts out of response from what they lacked as a child.

Great video. I wonder if these cultural norms are also the reason why Sonic the Hedgehog is massively more popular in the west than in Japan, where he was created. "Humble" is the last word I'd describe the character with, lol.

Any form of mental disorder mostly the tip of iceberg of trauma. Hikki, Gomi Yashiki, and Kireru is the by product of those trauma and yes just the oldschool bully, harassment, domestic violence , dismissed by family etc.
Being hikki is just their instinct of survival just the basic flight instead of fight. They choose to become apathy because they can't survive the culture society demand. I am lucky that I've been a hikki for only one year thanks to the anime Welcome to NHK.

I think the reason why this isn’t as widespread outside Japan is because this sense of self worthlessness comes later in life when one hasn’t achieved certain “goals” set by society by a certain age (marriage, children, economic independence etc) at which point is impossible to withdraw from society even if one wanted to as there are no parents to enable that & instead they just become homeless or resort in more “drastic” measures…

Hikikomori men are lonely. Women that are addicted to host clubs are lonely. Is there a way to connect them?

Thank you both for making this video and providing all of this information
It is crazy how Japan is so well devolved and yet mental health is so far behind

I'm a social hermit but probably not for the same reasons as many others. To put it simply I just have zero desire to be around others. Being friends or being around others I see as a waste of time and there's nothing to gain. When I could be doing something I enjoy.

Has anyone considered places where hikikomori can learn a different social construct one that is more amenable to their socialization, and in that mail you engage with each other ?

Would you be able to do a video about the male hikkomori vs female? I feel the females must be rare and unusual. There may be differences between the driving forces behind a mans reason for staying in the room and a woman's.
