When there are things that I always, always, ALWAYS use... I buy them double. 😊😊
Love that!
I love packing an art kit. It's like a present for future me.
For sure!
I have a similar little kit in a lihit lab smart fit pen case (no watercup though) that I have in my bag 95% of the time. I always have my A6 travellers notebook style book with me so it has a notebook, sketchbook & watercolour paper inserts. This summer I added a tin with a set of 15 caran d'ache swisscolor aquarelle pastels (essentially 1/2 sized neocolor 2s without the labels!), an extra waterbrush and a spare wee sketchbook for my little nephew (4) as he loves arty fun too! 😁🥰
If I purposely am going out to sketch / paint I might add another pouch with a bigger sketchbook or small block of watercolour paper, a wee metal palette and travel brushes. Could do with getting a collapsible watercup though...
PS I know you are on a no buy so maybe add your favourite mech pencil to your Christmas list so you can have one in the studio too? 😆
I have the same issues, and also have a tendency to change bags on a regular basis so I’m forever moving things around and rearranging my art kits. A flight kit, car kit, day trip kit, handbag kit….every situation is different! 😂
For sure!
I go nowhere and I have a bag ready under my desk. A girl can dream. Btw, just keep an inventory of the go bag. Keep it where you will see it and then you can pull something if you need it. I also double my absolute can not go without supplies (my favorite mechanical pencil) so I have them in my bag too.
My comment would be almost identical! My “to go” bags are really to go from room to room (or just outside to my deck), so I’m not stressed about not getting to use those items, I use them around my house and have no issue with switching supplies in/out. I just have comfort knowing I can grab one of those bags quickly and go somewhere at home to paint (or on the chance I’m going to a park or somewhere pretty, I can easily grab one of the smaller bags).
I’m one of those people who when they find a “favourite”, they purchase back-ups. Favourite comfy shoes? Buy them in a second colour! Favourite t-shirt? Buy a couple!! The same goes for my favourite pencil, water cup and a selection of brushes. That’s just my personality (fear of favourites being discontinued), so it’s not a big deal for me to commit something to a “to go” bag 😂. I felt your anxiety over the water cup and favourite pencil. I wish you had thought of making a to go bag before your permanent no-buy lol.
Hullo Miranda, I used to do a lot of travel artworks. I kept several bags to go depending on the job/medium the client wanted and what I want to use in personal work. I kept several Staedtler Mars 780 Technical Mechanical Pencils, 2mm. I carried several graphite weights in one carrier. I bought refills of 2H, 6H, 2B, 6B and put a selection in each refill pack. The ends are blunt and the leads do not break like so many mechanical pencils do! I hate most mechanical pencils because even a 0.7 size snaps off with the least amount of torque! (sideways pressure) With these pencils I kept one in every bag I had, watercolors, acrylics, gouache, charcoal I even had one in my "pencil" bag that held an assortment of 12 weights of pencils and a 24 selection of color pencils! Because once you get to use one kind of sketching tool you rely on it! So if you do not want to change your favorite pencil just go get 2 more of your favorite. I hope you find a way to level up your travel sketchbook practice. Back when I was trying to advance, the only Instamatic camera was Poloroid The film was so expensive it just did not make sense! Now with cell phones if you see a good or even great composition just take a pic and you got it for a reference! For your sketch or even after if you want to make a studio painting! The whole idea of color sketching came about when impressionist painters wanted to "take home a reference" so they could paint in the comfort of their studios! It is also why we have pastels! Instant color reference, it evolved into a whole new way of painting!
I usually use two pill bottles for water pots (either rx or similar sized bottles which originally held ibuprofen etc)
The seals aren't made to hold liquids indefinitely, buuut if used regularly, you can usually get a couple months before they get slightly leaky. Definitely very packable and very handy
Good idea!
Your life is so full of adventure 😊 very aspirational
That's a nice kit, I also like the look of the viviva travel kit, but it was sold out when I was looking for it to make my own art on the go kit. So I cobbled together my own using the Kingart drawing set (it was like 9 bucks) and had pencils and soft pastels in it. I pulled all the supplies out and put my own stuff in instead. The elastic loops that had the pastels fit a small pencil tin with watercolors, and my water brush, and the pencil loops I filled with colored pencils. The paper pad I replaced with one of the many (so many) 4x6 paper pads I get in my sketchbox sub.
It's perfect for taking with me to chemo and all the other doc appts I have cause at 9 by 6 inches, it's small enough to fit in my purse.
I also have found buying a multi pack of things like pencils and fine liners is cheaper than buying individually
So true!
I like reference photos also! Keep your phone handy, you just never know when a great idea will happen! Loved watching this! It is hard to commit lol
Love the fun you and yours have! Wonderful 🙂
I have 3 to go kits, small, medium and large. Part of the plein air adventure for me is choosing which kit to take and using what is in that kit on the day. I do have some repeat items but each kit has its own limited palette.
Miranda, just buy as many of the things you use all the time for your grab-and-go bags, but which you want in two (or three, or more eg as we need to count art classes at college) places at once!!!
Far better to have them always in the place you need than to cope with the frustration. And yes, I also think that to have G&G bags with the different set-ups you like is also a very good idea, so long as you don't end up with too much choice. Anyway, there's no need to limit yourself with only watercolour or only gouache, while you have the space for one of each as a mini palette. So you can also buy those favourite things for those.
So I don't consider this sort of purchase as a breach of your no-buy. It's absolutely necessary for your peace of mind!!!
But this is where I am deeply thankful that I have a proper bag. (I had to replace my bum bag, and this one's about half as big again, but still a bag I can carry on my waist if ever I fly again), where everything has its proper place. I also have the full kit I use for regular plein air (full pans, not half pans, and proper brushes, not travel brushes etc), ready to go. And the same things in the studio, so no need to keep swapping out...
I guess it's easy for me, as I always carried a full set of spares (aka my bumbag) when I took the ladies out with me, because someone usually forgot something, and being in my car meant that was easy. That included drawing boards, blankets, flask of hot water and teabags / coffee, and even a spare packed lunch .... ) and I always had to have spares for teaching, for the same reason (but obviously not accessories such as packed lunches, blankets and flasks.... 😄).
So yes, please do buy those things, and make up the bags you would most want to use without getting upset because it's your favourite and you want it in the studio, too...
And finally, 🤗🤗🤗 because i really do understand that dilemma!!!!!
Awesome video ❤😂 I have a grab and go bag lol but I keep removing my favourites from it 😂❤
Right? That right there is my exact problem, lol.
The Paper Mate Clear Point also goes to a blunt point. I also look for that in pencils myself.
I think I find a few of these at my grandma's house and I brought them home recently. I just have to find them again....
This is so good, I love plein air painting 😊😊
Thank you!
Miranda…. You are able to have 2 of your favorite pencils. Invest in yourself!!
I 100% agree with you. She’s on a “no buy” though. Maybe she could ask for it for Christmas?
Aw, you guys are so sweet. One of my friends sent me another one- whew!
I have to say I have multiples of my favourites, like pencils, erasers, etc. I like to put them in several places so no need to search for it all the time.
Seems reasonable, lol. I'll get there eventually!
@@MirandaWatsonArt I'd just go and get 2 or 3 of your fav pencils, I remember that one is your fav for quite some time. Ease of access and carefreeness it brings makes things so much more enjoyable, painting included.
Miranda - this had me smiling the whole time…and laughing, too, because the struggle is REAL, my friends😂🥺
I can’t…I cannot commit to ONE plein air kit. I change my mind too often-sometimes just want to work in WC pencil, sometimes I want to work in ink, sometimes I want to sketch in pencil and do a traditional watercolor. And then there are all the paper choices!
I commend you for doing this! You go, girl!
I will keep packing & unpacking and changing my mind😂😂
I do have ONE limitation…everything I bring has to fit in one of my smaller zipper pouches. I’m not in my studio as I wrote this, but it’s long enough to hold a set of 12 Neocolor Is-that red tin. I recently traveled to see the kids & grandkids and brought those, a set of 12 Derwent half pan watercolors (including water brush), pencil, eraser, sketchbook, Washi tape & clips. It will also hold a set of travel brushes. I have the same collapsible Faber Castell water cup, which i love, but it won’t fit. If I bring the conventional travel brushes I just bring an extra disposable water bottle for my paint water. Easy to pack it out that way, too! ❤❤❤❤
This was fun-thanks for sharing your process!! I sure identified with you!👩🏻🎨🥰
Great tips and tricks for those who travel, really good ideas, That butt scratcher looks petrifying to me!! But that weather is stunning! It's really crappy here in N.Wales even though it's supposed to be still summer, nice little painting too! :D
beautiful❤
You raved so highly of the blunt end mechanical pencil I just had to get one! But I went with the brand TUL! They come in a pack of 5 for around $10 and come to that blunt end!! Game changer! Love them!
Also… I totally relate to not wanting a “permanent” on the go bag because I find the choosing and packing part to be fun!
Oh, good to know!
Yes, I agree that packing the kit for the trip IS part of the fun!
It's very interesting seeing you guys on the same trails I regularly see TFL Offroad on!
I dont have an always on the go bag, maybe because im usually working and dont paint work 😊, thank you for sharing
Makes sense.
Get a Graph Gear 1000....for your on-the-go bag. I have 10 different kits put together. Love making them!
Ah, yes, fun! I do want to make a few more kits!
Just found your channel , I’m binge watching all the things. I may be making a few purchases too 🫣🤭love your channel! Do you happen to know what lip and cheek color you are wearing in the studio? The peach color looks great!!! I’m hoping you know the color 🫶🏼and it looks as good on me as well!!!
Lol, it's supposed to bring you joy making a travel kit, not stress 😂 I guess the beauty of a ready to grab on the go anywhere kit is that you can use it anywhere - including your studio or your college classes! Also you can change it out whenever you want - nobody will ever know 😂 for my part I have lots of little palettes that duplicate all my studio sets so I can choose between them. And I have varying sizes and pouches/bags and multiples of liners and my pencil so I can grab whatever size works and put it together quickly. I do have a tiny W&N cotman palette I poured (a homemade equivalent of the art toolkit one) and waterbrush that's in my pouch of handy things (tape, clips, viewfinder etc) all the time and a wee A6 Stillman and Birn alpha sketchbook for thumbnails so that's always ready even if I don't grab anything else, but it's very much part of my basic kit for when I'm out Plein airoil painting, bit a kit in and of itself intentionallym
I tried so often to make an ”every-time.. to go“ bag.. but I always have to change sth… 😅 I have a lot of little watercolor palettes like you. And I don’t want to use always the same one🙊 Only one bag what I can grab before I go is not possible to me. And you didn’t seemed so convinced either about the concept of only one travel bag 😆..
Red pencil not available same thing in blue should arrive Saturday. Can't have you stressing over missing your favorite pencil.
Got it! Beth, you sure spoil me rotten! Thank you a million! Hugs and love. ❤️
@@MirandaWatsonArt Know things like that drive me crazy. You'd be reaching for it and then remember you'd move to the travel kit.
Get another of your favorite pencils !
I swear that when my husband retires I'm actually going to get to take an RV trip it's going to cost me a fortune exactly bring eight puppies LOL and get out of here in the desert to see some green grass trees and snow. I finally found my beautiful palette that I want to put in my da Vinci's into so that they stay still. The problem is I need a few more half pans of colors that I don't have and I use. Save me please 😂
I wrote a comment yesterday and linked one of Sarah Burns' videos, and UA-cam simply deleted it. 😳I don't even have it in my history...
It was about that I don't understand why did you pack the water cup, while you only took waterbrushes with you at the end 😅, and why don't you buy more of your favorite pencil? That's not a huge cost. Cheap things I use I often buy 5 at once as a preparation of breaking or losing them. 😄
The video I linked is titled as *"my favorite PLEIN AIR PAINTING setups ✶ watercolor, gouache, oil, palettes, pochade boxes and MORE!"* and at 8:48 in that video she shares her mini kit. I thought that might be useful.
(Lesson learned: no video can be linked. Not even a UA-cam video.)
I've watched that video! I brought the water cup because it's nice to have a cup of water to dip the water brushes into if possibly because that's a lot easier than squeezing the water out of them each time. It's also a lot faster! So when it's possible to use the water cup, I do. I hope that makes sense! I will be adding some regular travel brushes in though eventually. Oh, I also don't buy another pencil because I'm on a no-buy and trying to use up what I already own first if possible.
@@MirandaWatsonArt Okay, that's a legitimate reason for the cup. 👌 But "no-buy" for a pencil? 🙈 It's so cheap and it's obviously needed... I'm thinking about sending you some. 😂
@@moma-b Beth sent me one for the same reason, lol. Thank you for the thought! ❤️🧡💛
@@moma-b I've read Miranda's reply, and I'd say, "Go ahead, anyway!" because she needs them in several different places - like her college art course bag, on her desk, in her purse.... I've looked for them myself, but postage from Europe is prohibitively expensive otherwise I wouldn't
say this to you. 😊
You two are so sweet. ❤️ But I'll be okay, really!
