    Great job! Thanks for doing this test so we don’t have to. I also found the Rustoleum clear coat over-promised and under-delivered. The engine finish fail was unexpected. Also, check fuel-cock gaskets, as I’ve had weeping between layers from what appeared to be a good seal and wasn’t, causing blistering. This on a factory painted tank that was impervious elsewhere. Dupli-Color it is then! I still like a clear-coat over decals, so will probably look at one of the 2K finishes.

      Although many commented they love 2k, I did not have a good experience. The nozzle is awful and spit chunks of clear coat boogers all over my tank. Using 2k caused me to have to strip my tank and start over.

    • @dinstaar
      @dinstaar  3 роки тому +3

      First, I removed the tank and took off the cap. I used aircraft paint remover and a green scrubby pad to remove all of the existing paint. Then primed with filler/sandable automotive primer by Rustoleum. I then used Duplicolor automotive paint from the auto parts store. No clear coat as it seemed to be weaker and destroy the acrylic lacquer. It turned out beautiful. And yeah, I have spilled a little gas on it (unavoidable sometimes) and it caused no damaged. I just let the gas dry on it and wiped it up with surface cleaner when I got home.

Unfortunately, although the vendor sold the 'kit' as one meant for motorbike fuel tanks, I didn't read the fine print. Oddly, the vendor's site stated that the included clear-coat was not fuel resistant, and that an alternate product offering should be used. I missed that, and on one of the first fill-ups, baptized my tank and ruined the clear-coat. Now I'm considering re-clearing using one of the 2K products not reviewed here. I know there is a risk that applying with one type over top of another is somewhat risky, but I'm willing to do that else it's back to square one as you did. I was surprised that krylon seemed to be completely fuel proof after curing for a few weeks. Other than that I found only 2 part paints, clear coats, and non aerosol oil base enamel in the can are completely fuel proof when dried. Takes about 7 days for most to completely cure. I'm going to test the aerosol rustoleum acrylic clear coat in the next couple of days, but I suspect it won't be fuel proof. I've always wondered if polyurethane is fuel proof, I want to test that eventually too.

Also, different types of filler necks, flush, raised. Is their a technique to seal the paint as it transitions to the filler neck to provide additional protection of keeping the gas from penetrating underneath the paint. You didn't mention how long you let the test pieces cure before you did the test. Anyway, thanks for the tutorial.

      @dinstaar  4 роки тому +3

      No. The can said 7 days so I waited 7 days. I researched forums on this paint and found there was an agreed cure time of 7 days.
      One thing that I thought of later was heat. Engine enamel is meant to withstand heat over and over again, something that does not happen on a motorcycle tank. Heating the paint a few times may aid in hardening it. So this paint may be good on engines, but not for a motorcycle tank.

      Yeah, like every gas station stocks the paper towels like they should, and every biker carries a gassy rag in their pocket. Lol.
      If you tell me you never spilled gas on your tank with no way to wipe it off immediately, you're just plain not telling the truth.
      Thanks for the heads up with the 2k clear though. Maybe I'll try it again if I ever need to do more painting by heating it first. The duplicolor has held up great though and it has been a couple years now. Minor spills have been no problem and it still looks great.

    Why would anyone rattle can their gas tank??
    2k only it’s not that expensive. It’s more durable and scratch resistant.
    Rattle can paint is all garbage.

      My tank looks great and I get compliments on my bikes custom color frequently.
      Believe it or not, some people enjoy working on their bikes themselves as opposed to paying someone else to do it. A rattle can paint job done right can look amazing. It does take patience and practice to learn to do it well.
      As for 2k, I have read good things. However, my personal experience has been less than stellar. Their nozzle is awful and it blew booger like chucks all over. It was not even at all. My point is directed more at quality than cost. A $20 that sprays like garbage is awful. They should be embarrassed when Duplicolor is cheaper and out performs at less than $10.

      @@dinstaar you can buy 2k aerosol paint and do it yourself. It’s actually easier to spray than rattle can. It levels better and dries much quicker.

      @@tthams73 Why? My bike is done and looks amazing. No thanks on buying equipment and a painting booth just to paint my motorcycle. The option I took worked out well.

    The most stupid test I've ever seen. Of course all your clear coats will be destroyed by gas because You're using 1K clears, that are not chemical resistant, and they dissolve when you add any solvent(like gas).
    To achieve chemical resistant coating you have to use 2K clear coats, and only 2K.

      The most stupid comment I have ever read. Especially since the Duplicolor engine clear coat is marketed as fuel resistant. Duplicolor itself claims to be fuel proof. This test shows what using an off the shelf clear coat does to the paint in the likely event you spill fuel on it. Many people would also like to know how fuel resistant Duplicolor paint is alone.
      2k is not available like other paints at the stores either so many don't use it. Also, testing 2k would be ignorant because everyone already knows the outcome.
