I adore Justin he's a beyond this planet amazing colorist. I have a few clients that do this same exact service I get it... but looking at this now... i couldn't help but wonder.... What is the point of A bleach Retouch at the dark blonde regrowth + Partial Highlights only to follow it with a shadowed base color which is almost as dark as the natural color? 😕
Because the shadow root he wanted to do was lighter than her natural. He used a 7-8 level and she is naturally looks to me at least a 5. If he would have did it in one step it would have pulled to much warmth. This way he could control it.
Courtney B-Stylist this client is Caucasian... Could have used a high lift tint to break that base color without having to lift to pale yellow only to go back down. A 5 to 7 isn't that far of a reach...
Still to a lot of warm tones. the undertone in 6 and below is red and red is more difficult to control than the orange and yellow undertones of level 7 and above. highlifts are not usually recommended on levels 6 or darker if you dont want to see any warmth, which Justin did not. Not trying to argue with you, but after 18 years of haveing A LOT of blonde clients, I know my shit. ;-)
Exactly, I like the ombre thing but its had its trend time. Its over now. You will still see girls doing this. I'd rather get 2 looks for 1...get your entire head done blonde and let it grow out so your get some variation. I can't stand going back and doing the roots darker, pointless. Faking root grow out? lol just let it happen naturally whats the rush.
Because her natural color is quite dark. Looks like a level 5 to 5.5 imo. He lifted that color to a canary yellow, and then applied a level 8 hair color so that her roots would be a bit softer and not so harsh. This would be an utter pain in the ass to keep up with, but if you absolutely do not want brassy reddish roots, it's the only way to go if you are that dark. On some level 6 people, using a level 10 hair color with a 20 volume developer, and just briefly leaving it on (10 -15 min) produces the same softening effect. You wash it out just before you start getting brassy, but you have to move quick!!! even 3 more minutes, and you get brassy. Softer brunette is hard to achieve in just one step when you start out so dark. You'd have to do a test strand.
ooo thanks for the tip! maybe you can help me with something else....i have a client with level 4 natural. i made her into a platinum blonde, but now when we retouch, even with toning, she is still gold/orange. she's been coming to me for years and is ok with it, but i want it to be brighter. her ends are lighter than her roots obviously, i'm blaming that on the environment and her repeatedly washing that hair. it had no pigment. so i think i 'm going to have to bleach her out twice, which sucks cuz to do it once it takes 40 min. i even upped the developer, (no no) and the timing. same thing. she also has some yellow banding i'd like to get rid of, without hurting her other hair. i use olaplaex on her as well.
Because level 8 with a 30 vol developer stills pulls too much brass on someone that dark. If you want a truly muted soft brown you must get it to the yellow stage, and then tone with an ashy toner. As far as your client, if you have Olaplex stick with a 30 vol and leave it on with heat. The Olaplex turns the 30 vol as gentle as a 20 vol. Unfortunately, I know you guys like to turn around your clients as quickly as possible, but patience is the key for her if you want to preserve the quality and condition of her hair. 40 minutes is not long enough. As long as the bleach mix stays wet, you wait until she has just lifted to past the yellow stage.
so as im watching and reading the comments i was expecting her roots to look like a level 4 or something. this is beautiful and her grow our will be more natural so when she comes back in its not the most unbearable skunkline root. also the person who said she can do this at home with her sally bleach, good luck. that bleach is rough and will most likely fry the poo out of your hair.
There is a lot of warmth left in her hair and the color is really uneven. It definitely needed a toner and not just a tinted shampoo and conditioner plus a tinted shampoo and conditioner only lasts a couple washes and if you keep using it with such a strong pigment her hair will start to turn blue or purple which is why a toner needs to be used instead.. I think the shadow color was way too dark and I agree that process could have been skipped entirely. Could have used a hi-lift with a really cool base to get a similar effect and again the roots seem almost black in comparison. A shadow root is just that a shadow normally only a couple shades darker than the rest of the hair, that was significantly darker. She basically left the salon looking like she needed to get her roots done the next day. indoor lighting can have cool tones that can disguise uneven color and then you go out in the sunlight and you will see all the areas that still have warmth or gold. I personally feel hair that long should have at least two or three different owners in it. One for the overall base one for a brighter highlight and one for a little bit of depth even if they're only a level or so apart. That's a lot of hair to make all one color which starts to give the effect of a week. any variation in color that you see at the end it's just from uneven bleaching and a lack of toning.
I love Justin but I thought the same thing - super uneven color and the shadow root isn't right for this level of blonde / look. A toner should have definitely been used, even if he wants to push the DPHue line (which I understand) but not at the cost of the integrity of good work.
@@rebeccabruton9359 It shouldn't burn if your scalp is prepped properly and no more than 20 vol is used. (Good bleach like Guy Tang can lift the hair with only 20 vol.)
@@rebeccabruton9359 Yeah so a lot of hair stylists don't tell their clients how to prep for bleach. You want to make sure to not wash your hair for at least 5 days. Not washing helps protect your scalp. You want greasy hair before bleaching. When you wash your hair you can make micro abrasions on your scalp and then if you have bleach on your scalp it will burn in those places. Also putting coconut nut oil on the scalp before bleaching can really help prevent burning.
I use this technique alot and always love it. The roots are taken out and put back in so that roots are there but on our terms, allowing for a smudged line and allowing the root colour to appear more shadowed than dence. Really love this colour. x

Wouldn’t it help if he used a dark Demi-perm on the roots with finger blending /smudge technique instead ? rather than bleaching to prevent stronger damage from the bleach? But it’s the same outcome right ? That middle finger though 15:00 LMAO And if I were to use purple semi-perm on the platinum blonde would it visibly overlap the dark roots on the line ? If I were to wish to achieve the black roots with purple hair instead
WOW!!! just to bleach the entire head... that was way too much wasted time and work. I guess that’s why salons can charge so much and get away with it. They make it look more complicated and time consuming then it has to be. GEEZE! Can somebody help? I need to do my roots and also lighten my hair color- My hair color is an level 8-9 blonde and my roots are dark brown. Ive planned on buying powder bleach and lever 30 developer and also a T10 toner and a 10 developer for the toner. The problem is, i dont know in which order should I bleach my hair. Should I start with bleaching the roots (once or twice?) and then bleach the hair all around to lighten the color once the roots are done?
hey bro nice job I must confess...please I want to know the yellow liquid you added to the bleach and why you added it...2ndly want to why you demarcated your work with wool? please reply ASAP...PEACE
I have a legit question. I am not a hair expert or anything so please don't be mean if you respond. What happens when it grows out. I want to do this to my bleach blonde hair but after 8 weeks would the stylist bleach again and then add back the root again? im so confused lol
How long would you recommend waiting to get my hole head bleached again as I had it done twice and went in to a Different salon to get my roots darkened and toner and the stupid cow dyed my hole head this crapy dark blond brown colour before I was a white ashy blond now it looks brown or would you recommend going and getting half head foils dark root just to see what it looks like
Does anybody know did he use the same “root mix” for rest of the hair (the one that he put in the foil)? Or it’s a new mix with less volume, 20 or less?
5:58 puts a crumb of bleach on ear. 6:07 puts a bigger chunk of bleach on ear and proceeds. You're supposed to clean it off or it will irritate the skin.
Ok, so for future reference, you don't need to video the application to the entire head! A few minutes showing the general application is plenty to portray/explain. I literally zoomed through 15 minutes of this video. Come on! No-one wants or needs to watch all of that!
Justin that looks amazing! Thank you for the tip to go in and foil out certain sections to take out the yellow tone. I'm currently correcting a client who has been box coloring her hair "ash blonde" and she wants to be this light. When I was finished with her first session she said she can still see some yellow tones in her hair
Why not show the front of her head in the AFTER? Looked beautiful!!

hey bro nice job I must confess...please I want to know the yellow liquid you added to the bleach and why you added it...2ndly want to why you demarcated your work with wool? please reply ASAP...PEACE
Im not a big fan of the shadow root. I perfer hair bleached from root to ends
14:58 "Giving The Middle Finger" ...
😱
I have a legit question. I am not a hair expert or anything so please don't be mean if you respond. What happens when it grows out. I want to do this to my bleach blonde hair but after 8 weeks would the stylist bleach again and then add back the root again? im so confused lol
Wish I had this help while doing hair 😂😂
Christina Wolfgram right there.
How long would you recommend waiting to get my hole head bleached again as I had it done twice and went in to a Different salon to get my roots darkened and toner and the stupid cow dyed my hole head this crapy dark blond brown colour before I was a white ashy blond now it looks brown or would you recommend going and getting half head foils dark root just to see what it looks like
In Italia non ci sono parrucchieri così bravi 🤗
nice result! did you use the same 30v + up to 7 & olaplex in the foiled sections, or did you reformulate a lightener for that?
when he makes SECTIONS, her hair is NOT as on BEFORE (& AFTER ) PHOTO. ..
ITs already WHITE
Is Olaplex step #2 not used in this process? If so where would step 2 be applied after washing the bleach out, or after washing the root color?
Am I the only person who likes golden blonde hair?
Great video, I learned a lot, but I wish I could see the front of her hair in the after!
Does anybody know did he use the same “root mix” for rest of the hair (the one that he put in the foil)? Or it’s a new mix with less volume, 20 or less?
i LOVVVE YOUR videos so much but this music is hard to listen to :(
What toner for the white???
Which exact semi root?
Does the semi root color fade completely (when touch up comes around)???
5:58 puts a crumb of bleach on ear. 6:07 puts a bigger chunk of bleach on ear and proceeds. You're supposed to clean it off or it will irritate the skin.
I LOVE this. But....how long does he expect this to stay white like that with no violet-based toner?
So you bleached hair that was already fried then put extremely dark roots on her that she already naturally had wtf.....
Excellent job, love it
Bleached the roots with 30 vol ? 😣 NO NO NO OOOO
Using olaplex will dilute that 30 vol down to a 20. Still too high for roots tho I agree.
How many times did you have to make another batch of lightener? How do you like to ration your product?
Justin, do you ever use flashlift or Blonde Dimensions? What do you love about Up to 7?
Around 3:35 - 3:44 when he's parting and coloring the roots look at the side closest to the center part, her scalp looks really red and irritated
Ouch all that bleach then she wanted her roots shadowed #smh but this boy is a genius I am obsessed with all of his work!
Got to go music is horrible why do these stylist use music I like silence or even birds chirping
Hi Justin, have you thought about opening a salon in London England ?love your work. ❤❤❤
Why the hell would he bleach the roots just to re darken them seems like that's damaging the hair way more than needed
Le quedó la raíz igual de obscura.no me gusta
Ok, so for future reference, you don't need to video the application to the entire head! A few minutes showing the general application is plenty to portray/explain. I literally zoomed through 15 minutes of this video. Come on! No-one wants or needs to watch all of that!
Disagree. I like to get lit and watch full application videos I find it intensely satisfying and mentally soothing
I thought he was kool until how he flipped his middle finger.
It was smooth and subtle how he flipped it.
Why did you use so much olaplex. Guy tang says less is more. Which is true ?
did u have to pick this fucking song
pp
Yellow tones on hair looks amazing
Oh my god, that must be sting coz the bleach on the scalp😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
that is not a shadow root lol that looks like they did not bleach her roots in the first place xD
Yellow tones on hair looks good
