Although you said you don't plan on repairing the screen, it's important to note the displays for these newer MacBooks come paired with the motherboard, causing replacements to have artefacts near the top bezel. So if you ever change your mind and want to fix it, just know you will either have to transfer the IC chips from the original display to the new one or get Apple themselves to do it (which will likely be very expensive).

When I lived in the U.S. and tried to buy used Apple products, it felt nearly impossible to find a good deal. Most offers seemed like scams. It took me 3-6 months and over 300 listings to find anything worthwhile. With the AirPods Max, I eventually gave up after six months and over 150 offers-it felt like I was spending more on gas just to meet sellers pushing fake products. Honestly, finding a legit deal is rare, so you’re one of the lucky ones! ❤
@@R1D3R_ Used Apple market is FILLED with scams. I’d say it’s about 50% of newer laptops being sold. Especially headphones, man. The fakes are getting better and better. iPhones too. So I’ve been looking around for deals too, upgrading from my intel MacBook Air for 7 years. Since the M4 laptops are coming up soon, I’m looking forward to more deals on the Apple laptops.
Yeah, especially knowing that ddr5 32gb kit from crucial alone costs 90 dollars before shipping. I know that because i just bought it. And this guy just spent $30 more than me and basically got one of the most powerful laptops.
@@ragilmalik fuck the RAM... that M1 max is seriously impressive even after 4 yerars. It will be a legendary chip, like i7-4790K or a 1080Ti. 10 years of solid performance in tech is a pretty rare thing.
Cool video! I recently upgraded MacBooks and used migration assistant but didn't have an expensive thunderbolt cable and didn't want to use Wi-Fi either. A trick I found that works very well is by connecting the two MacBooks using an ethernet cable if you have the adapters. Transfer took under an hour!
Congrats on the find! I just bought mine which was similar to yours but the M1Pro model & 16GB RAM for $1100 instead. I couldn’t do what you do so you deserved that discount! 😉
Mate what a deal! Not only a great find and upgrade for you! But props to the guy selling it for dealing with the marketplace scammers & headache to keep it from going into landfill! (That would have been the true tragedy!)
It's like $700 to fix. Sometimes apple randomly will fix it for you as well in store if they deem it's their fault it's broken. Either way $820ish for M1 Max is insane.
I (or the company I work for) bought a new M1 Max MacBook Pro on sale at half off a little while back. It was a great deal and I’m extremely happy with the machine, but this a whole other level!
Oh dude, you definitely deserve this, no doubt. You got a blessing bro. I also wouldn't take the risk of changing the display because its just too good how it is to risk it.
@ no worries man. i have an m3 pro the black one and i slogged to get it. apple lowkey scammed me by giving me 5 performance cores out of 11 but i still love the laptop over a year on. one of the best investmentd i ever made.
This is amazing. As someone that is always finding lucky deals like this, i understand your excitement haha!! See if there are any local repair shops that will at least diagnose and quote you a repair cost. Quite often a failed backlight doesn't require a new screen, the backlight driver, or even a resistor or capacitor could have failed. It can be a very easy repair for someone that knows what they're doing.
hey, man, thanks so much! I did ask for a quota from a service dealer and they gave me a price of like $1000, so I won’t be repairing it at this point. Cheers!
@@schvabekSounds like they're quoting a screen replacement which wouldn't actually fix what could potentially (and is very likely if you don't see any damage) a motherboard side issue. There is no need to charge such a price to replace what's most likely a capacitor/resistor at less than a 10c each. I live in the UK and am very aware of repair costs in certain parts of the states being ridiculous, but here such a repair wouldn't cost more than about $200. As someone that has repaired a few, it's an under an hour repair (providing the backlight circuit didn't blow up in spectacular fashion haha). Apple don't repair at a board level, they just replace the entire motherboard meaning the original owner was probably quoted something crazy and just decided to sell it. Id get a second opinion personally, but as long as you're happy and it does as you need! Great video.
Dude that’s great! I also use similar MacBook Pro 14”, but my configuration is M1Pro 16/1TB. Had to pay 2400$ for this thing when it came out, but it was well worth it, since it is still the best computer I have ever owned. I know it’s entirely your decision, but it is still sad that you are not going to replace the screen on this Mac. You said that you’ll use your old MacBook to carry around, but I’m just curious to know - why wouldn’t you sell the old one and use that money to fix the new one? I know the math will probably not add up, but I would really suggest you considering fixing it, since this MacBook is basically all in one computer, and with your configuration it literally could do anything. The battery life on those ones is great. But the screen is absolutely stunning, I am sure if you fixed that you would appreciate it too. Even with the repair cost, I think this is still a killer price for this kind of computer. Happy for you
Hey, thank you so much for the input! So glad you’re happy for me ❤️ I’ve actually taken this thing to my local repair shop (two in fact) and I’ll be making a follow up video on it, so I’ll explain everything then. Cheers!
Broken backlight only? Damn. Congratulations. Maybe look up something from Luis Rossman on backlight repair. Probably just a broken cable that can be replaced for like 20 bucks :D
Backlight issues most probably refer to a light water damage. Most probably the power supply fuse for the PWM IC is done. Possibly an easy fix. Also important to check for further possible water damage, as these can kill you device over time, as corrosion progresses.
@ You‘re welcome :) And congrats to your awesome find! Reminds me of a similar story, that happened to me around ten years ago: Got an 27“ iMac with i7 CPU for 90€, only with a broken HDD and shortly after that a MacBook Pro 2013 with water damage (and a broken backlight, that I fixed myself) Both times I felt exactly the same like you! 😁
I would definitely repair this thing. You got a beast there and it would be great to be mobile with it. That being said, seems like a backlight issue probably from the backlight ic on the motherboard. It's a relatively inexpensive part readily available and can be done by several of the shops on youtube. NorthridgeFix, Rossman Repair Group, Paul Daniels, TheCod3r, etc. Iwould check with some of those and see what they say. Good luck and I'm glad you got such a great deal!
There's a good chance the connector to the monitor has just slightly worked itself lose, and it''d be a simple fix of just plugging it back in. There's videos explaining this.
You most probably don't need a new display, these macs have a common problem with the display cable getting chewed up, if I'm not mistaken. You can just try replacing the ribbon cable first. You could also try to get it replaced for free at the apple store, since it was a manufacturing defect
@@schvabek I did it 2-3 times on a 2016 model, but there backlight cable always failed. It is very hard and I had to get a microscope, despite being very experienced in micro soldering. The main ribbon cable has many very thin connections which I don't think they can be repaired with normal soldering. Pozdrav iz Slovenije :)

It is dead quiet and I never hear the fans spin up unless I manually turn them up for some reason. My battery health is at 93% You can find the battery cycle count by looking in the utilities folder for the System Information app and then clicking the power option in the left side menu. For the price you paid it would be worth it to find a replacement screen. Even if it costs you a couple hundred Euros. But I would check the cables and make sure its not just a simple fix. There were a few of the very early 16 and 14 inch Macbooks that had loose display cables. What a great find!! Congrats!!!

@@schvabek Yea thats a too high, but I would check that the display cables are connected, you might get lucky and find it was just a simple cable came unplugged or the magnet that turns the display off when the lid is closed has come loose and is keeping the display off. So if you ever change your mind and want to fix it, just know you will either have to transfer the IC chips from the original display to the new one or get Apple themselves to do it (which will likely be very expensive).
@@AlexsCooking Yeah, I know the repairs for idevices are just getting silly at this point, with them serialising screens and stuff. One of the reasons I probably won’t end up repairing it.

Backlight issues most probably refer to a light water damage. Most probably the power supply fuse for the PWM IC is done. Possibly an easy fix. Also important to check for further possible water damage, as these can kill you device over time, as corrosion progresses.
