    Whats great about Upward Compression with vocals is that you can bring up all the timber in a voice without having to eat the mic, so in other words, it's a pseudo way of sending the mic almost down your throat (depending how aggressive you get with it) while avoiding the plosives or otherwise unnaturalness of being so close to the mic/capsule. Its what I've used for years to make my tracks sound so textured.

    I watch your uploads religiously -- I think I've watched them all actually. Sometimes it takes me months to get around watching some of them though, most times because I feel like I've already studied the subject ad nauseum, but I still click on them and everytime, I end up finding something that quenches my thirst. UA-cam's really gone a long way in ten years, and I do hope you keep on putting out such quality materials and insights.
    That being said, there's one thing I've been constantly wishing while watching you, so I'm putting it here now because I found myself wishing for it again: please, please, crank up your examples. Imo it would really help, not only the total neophytes -- but also the more "seasoned" engineers who've never thought to use upward compression on instruments, for example; and give people the extra incentive to actually *try* something new. Only A/Bing between already "perfect" settings, imo, makes it more difficult for people to see how much of a gem the technique/advice you're giving actually is, and makes it hard for them to conceptualize custom applications derived of it. Of course, not showing up cranked up settings gives me, in some degrees, the impetus to actually try the technique you've shown, or the custom application I see for it; but I'd probably be even more excited if I'd heard more of it from the get.
    Endword: thank you for all your work!

    It's traditionally called an Expander, I've never heard of it called upward compression before, bit it's a good way to explain it for people who are not familiar with the concept.

    • @expertizzlist
      @expertizzlist 4 роки тому +6

      The reason you never heard it being called that is that it's not the same thing at all. In fact, an expander does the opposite of compress.

    • @CayenneTravels
      @CayenneTravels 4 роки тому +2

      @@expertizzlist yes, they are opposite, but what he is describing and using is an expander + compressor. Its an expander for the quite parts and a compressor for the loud parts. Many compressors that are graph based (such as cool edit / adobe audition) use a graph with a zero line diagonally, anything pushed up past it is expand, anything pushed down bellow is conpression.

    • @expertizzlist
      @expertizzlist 4 роки тому +1

      @@CayenneTravels It's not an expander for the quiet parts, though, because an expander doesn't raise the volume of quieter parts, it lowers them. It expands dynamic range, which is the opposite of compression. Upward compression is more similar to auto gain, but without compressing the louder parts first. 🤓

    • @CayenneTravels
      @CayenneTravels 4 роки тому +1

      @@expertizzlist if it just changes the volume, without effecting the curve, but I can see how it could do that. Noise gate, expander and compressor are the same thing (check out a graph-based one where you can do all 3 on the same graph. A noise gate cuts the quiet, an expander boosts, a compressor lowers. All three based on a se threshold and ratio. I tried to draw crude graphs here:

  • @5urg3x

    You can also use upward compression if you’ve got a part that sounds good but has a few out of control peaks. If you turn it down, it’ll get the peaks in line, but during the other sections where the peaks aren’t crazy, it’ll sound too quiet. So instead of limiting it, and chopping off those peaks, you can use upward compression, set the threshold to bring the quiet parts up, and leave the peaks alone.

  • @ryanreach3710
    @ryanreach3710 4 роки тому +3

    So upward compressing isn't actually compressing then? It's just bringing up volume below a certain threshold? Therefore, maintaining dynamics, but bringing up low level details? Thanks for the great video btw!

    • @ibrahim47x
      @ibrahim47x 4 роки тому +3

      Ryan Reach No it is still compression. All types of compression are about adjusting gain above or below a certain threshold. Downward compression, or classic compression, lowers what’s above the threshold of a signal, then gain is used to bring up the entire signal because it’s been made quieter. Upward compression is the opposite in that it brings up what is below the threshold of a signal. See, in both cases it’s just a matter of adjusting gain. Upward compression lowers dynamics just like downward compression does. A more dynamic signal is one that has a higher dB range between the loudest part of the signal and the quietest part of the signal, so lowering that difference with any kind of compression lowers dynamics. However, a more dynamic signal doesn’t necessarily mean a better signal for the mix; if parts of the signal are so low that you cannot hear them in the mix or so high that they overpower the mix, then the dynamic range of such a signal is too high and is bad for the mix. I hope this explanation cleared up any confusion.
