So many critical comments. I've used Magic Eraser several times and it's been years and the leather is not broken or damaged. I would say 1ROAD you are missing 1 step... you just removed all the UV protection as well so you really should use a leather conditioner after the magic eraser. I typically only use a magic eraser on really really glossy leather. Dish soap can work as well but that is slower and messier. Magic eraser is hands down the quickest and cleanest way I've found to get an oil-free leather wheel but I wouldn't do it every time. Thanks for the video!
The black water is the dye from the leather. A quality leather cleaner with a micro fibre cloth followed by a conditioner gets same results and doesn't damage the surface. Only takes a little bit longer but well worth it.
I have used both eraser and leather cleaner and conditioner and by far the eraser does a better job you just cant do it all the time because it is sanding some leather off
For those who think it's the paint that is making the water black, no. That's literally dirt! I have a red leather steering wheel and not a trace of red in my water. Just pure dirt and grime. But do be careful though.
Thank you! Water is not going to remove frikkin leather dye! Cobblers literally use sand paper to fix leather surfaces when needed! This is a brilliant solution. Follow it up with conditioner and it’s perfect! I love this!
This trick worked well for me but be warned that too much rubbing with the abrasive pad will damage the leather surface. I'm happy I stopped cleaning mine when I did as I'm really happy with the result. I used slightly warm water, after looking at the results I recon it really depends on the leather surface and quality etc. (Just a little advice, check if the leather that you want to apply this to is synthetic or genuine) Will be interesting to see how this is in 2-3 months time.
Wouldn't use this technique on an expensive leather, but for a Chev its a good idea. I would still use a leather conditioner after to treat the leather.
I put some Lexoil leather cleaner on a damp micro fiber cloth and scrubbed my leather steering wheel, leather shift knob and leather driving gloves. This was followed up with a rinse wipe from another damp microfiber cloth and finally a buff with a dry microfiber cloth. All of the cloths were dampened with distilled water, to avoid mineral buildup. I used a product called Sapfir Medaille d'Or Nappa as a balm to treat the leather and now all the leather looks and feels like new, soft and supple. I might add some Jojoba oil to the leather over time to maintain the proper amount of oil in the leather to keep it healthy. One of the benefits of using driving gloves is that they keep the steering wheel and shift knob cleaner for longer. When the gloves and steering wheel are clean there is a nice cohesive force between them that allows a lighter touch on the steering wheel and shift knob.
All the baby’s in the comments. I use magic erasers on all steeringwheels off all cars i detail. And my own cars aswell. Never had any problems or complaints just be careful, when its clean leave it! Just dont go to far. Just skin the leather a little bit.
DON"T use A MAGIC ERASER on LEATHER IT WILL DAMAGE IT! srs! MAGIC ERASER is very very abrasive.(it's basically sand paper) It will damage both genuine and synthetic leathers.. Personal experience lucky it was a cheap Junk yard CAR . Use a mild soap with clean soft rag then conditioner(for synthetic / genuine leather )/ leather wax after. I think your next video will be I trashed my leather and now have to replace it.
It comes down to discretion. Don't go in full force, use the least amount of pressure to get the job done. Check out "APEX DETAIL" and watch a real old school PRO (Brian) detailer instruct on the uses and ways to use magic eraser. Auto detailers use this with great success... I myself have been detailing since the 90's and I use magic eraser for tons applications.
I have used it before, it was great but didn't last very long before it would shine again. Not like brand new where it would be couple if years before they will shine.
Use the leatherique treatment, then if that's not enough finish it off with the Swissvax leather cleaner brush. That's the proper way to clean a steering wheel on a 7 series and M3 that I have, it will work on other cars too :)
this stuff damages stainless steel (scratches it like sand paper ) If it DAMAGES stainless steel it will damage most things including leather. all that black water is leather particles
punker4Real done mine and its back to the way it was months later before doing it, looks no different to the way it was before so no damage done to my wheel, probably wouldn't do my seats though
my steering wheel was shining when brand new. After cleaning it with leather cleaners and waxes, it became dull. What you're doing is taking off the factory shine and I want it back!
How bad is this really? The results look very damn good and I really can't find anything that gets the job done like this but everybody says it's horrible for the leather? Even if you condition it afterwards?
Yes, it's not good for the leather He's is literally sanding it , this might be a good method for a while But over time you gonna regret it You can use leather cleaner with a bore hair brush It's gentle on the leather and does not damage it . Chemical guys sell a pack on Amazon Comes with the cleaner conditioner and brush.
@@thundermix100i used it in my dads RR and it worked perfectly fine after i cleaned it i applied conditioner and an interior ceramic coating on the steering wheel to protect it more
Not sure what's going on with this guy, but Mr. Clean sponges are abrasive and they don't "remove the oils from the leather." Really? The black water is the black leather particles from the steering wheel cover. WTH?
Just one of many examples why removing dislikes is literally dangerous. A good indication though, 60k views and 500 likes, not a good ratio at all lol.

What would you suggest cleaner wise?
Not really. It is much less noticeable on the following attempts. It’s hand oils and dirt.
I have used both eraser and leather cleaner and conditioner and by far the eraser does a better job you just cant do it all the time because it is sanding some leather off
It looks like it cleans really well but it leaves it dull so are you using some kind of conditioner after you did this

it works well on leather seats too
Just out of curiosity...
How did your steering wheel look a month or so after this treatment?
Wow 3 years and no reply? How disappointing.

That’s really interesting! But that leather will need some conditioning to prevent it from drying out
Amazing hack thanks for making this video I just used your method to restore my 150k mile steering wheel back to like new!

Actual leather looks like suede. Not shiny at all. My two new Mercedes SLK350 steering wheels were matt looking.
@@pattineedham9094 different car, different leather. Patent leather is definitely glossy, shiny and smooth.
Looks pretty good!
Wouldn’t recommend. Did this to my steering wheel in my truck. It faded it and made the leather rough . Almost $2200 to replace
am always worried that stuff like this gives scratch marks on leather but it doesnt?
What spray can you use to repaint? I have a 2018 1500 silverado and my leather steering wheel needs paint. I can see the leather coming up.
Leather isn't painted, it's dyed. There are videos on UA-cam showing you how to dye leather to change it's color.

China Magic Eraser on the headlights and rims
dont stop there bro - go for the paintwork and interior trim esp the screen dash etc
i did this to my dads truck to be nice and he freaking put shiny armor all on it after cuz "shiny is better" :/
Haha
You havent cleaned your wheel, you have just erased black paint from the wheel

i thought it looked better before you cleaned it
it just looks dull now just my opinion
I think worn leather looks good especially on shoes or sandals, but a steering wheel is supposed to look matte when it's new, though.
Nah. Shiny leather looks fake and plasticky, satin/matte looks soft, comfy and real.
🤦🏻♂️
Ruined my steering wheel with this method
You successfully removed the factory glazing from the leather. That WAS how they looked ftom the factory.
