    This video was transformative for me. Ive been struggling with my 6L90 for years, and after using this video as a real-time instuction guide and then doing A/B tests I feel I have a much more solid grasp on the tuning process and the car has never been more fun to drive. I only wish this video had come along years ago! Thank you, sir.

I did the gear/tire converter, but it's been running like straight garbage since. I watched this and its Super informative and goes in depth with explanations. I did the stock settings for 6L80 with Bluecat as explained in this video and the WOT for a stock Gen IV. All I can say is WOW! It is a night and day difference. It drives so much better now! Ive got the tune on the motor pretty good but would like to smooth out the shifting. I chose the cam so i could use the stock converter and maintain my lower rpm torque for towing. Aside from zeroing out tcc tables do you think im going to have to use the blue cat software as well or do you think just the first step will help out? Very novice at this tuning stuff so any help is greatly appreciated.

      If you're putting a gen4 in your car, you're going to want to ground two yellow wires (yellow and yellow black). One is the starter relay control and the other is the powertrain relay control. It isn’t a dilemma. How I said I do it is the way I found to be correct, every single time. I have verified it via GPS on every vehicle that I’ve tuned since I realized it probably 11-12 years ago. So that was more of a tuning tip. You can choose to do it that way or not.

    Question.... What about the purge enable function? Us guys who add to the clutch stack up on the 35r and 456 clutch packs....we get kinda tight on tolerances. Gm hard wired a clutch purge to happen on every new drive cycle just after the 2-3shift to quickly apply the 456 clutches assuming to purge air (?). Well that causes a small "bump" or bindup which totally sucks. So disabling the feature prevents this function. Thoughts on this solution??

    • @Matt_Sanford

      Ps this coming from someone with no knowledge,
      I.E. I’m not sure if it changes how hard it shifts based on speed or throttle position or what. I say ‘how hard it shifts’ because you mentioned it’ll be more ‘rowdy’ with increasing these

    would I lower the oncoming pressures and increase the oncoming volume to stop a shift bind? 2-3 clutches are too tight when rebuilt(guess). I'm getting close by increasing the volume but the reset causes terrible flares until the adaptives start kicking in. About a week or 2 later she starts to shift harder. I never liked that it had to flare until the adaptives took over but what you said at the end made perfect sense about the adaptives telling you "no dummy that doesn't work".

    • @Matt_Sanford
      @Matt_Sanford  9 місяців тому

      The trick to getting one not to bind is to watch the datalog and determine which part of the shift is causing the bind. If the flare is bad and then it binds after the flare you would increase Oncoming and decrease Offgoing. If it binds then flares, you would decrease Oncoming and increase off going. This is actually the reason why I don’t like clutch height being altered from factory but you should be able to get it dialed 👍

    • @cpwood2888
      @cpwood2888 9 місяців тому

      If I set it back to factory settings it doesn't flare that i can tell. The shift is violent and the final shift time is 75 mil sec. I then understood lowering oncoming volume would reduce flare so tried increasing until it started to flare. the adaptives then slowly bring it back to hitting like mike tyson. I tried lowering the oncoming pressure and it seems to help little by little but unsure if I'm doing something terrible to the internals. @@Matt_Sanford

      The shop swears up and down they set it to spec but I've exhausted my tolerance and probably going to take it in and make them verify the clearance. the stock tune file binds which 2-3 flares more often than not.@@Matt_Sanford

      That’s hidden parameters that HPTuners hasn’t defined. I haven’t had it cause any issues though but yes that’s not something we can eliminate at the moment until someone can find it in the binary file and add it to HPTuners or add it into user defined parameters.

    Is disabling lockup in 1-4 a good idea or is it better to lockup and command no slip?

    • @Matt_Sanford
      @Matt_Sanford  4 місяці тому +1

      Just depends on the application. Most applications I set them up to lock up in 4th and above with no commanded slip.

      @@Matt_Sanford daily driver stock 6.2 2012. Denali. Trans just rebuilt with sk6l80 and sl8-cs-tcc kits from transgo and they supplied a precision billet converter. Occasional towing and spirited driving. I haven’t used hptuners yet. Im still in the learning all I can phase. Did you watch the video series SIU automotive put out? The ones where he installed transducers in the valve body of a 6L80 then tested on a dyno and experimented with how different parameters actually change things? It’s pretty cool.

    Putting in 0 slip causes the TCC to shudder/fishbite worse and will eventually destroy the clutch faster, they are designed to slip but poorly designed, flawed from the factory. GM did this more on Gen V to meet mpg with the EPA. the 3 rpm minimum slip on AC creates a lot of shudder and issues. The oem torque converters are defective from the factory because they do not have enough area of friction and warp from heat in their design. The only fix is to replace torque converter with a billet converter that resolves this area overheating and friction. Also from 2014 6sp and 8sp trans have a built in cooler line thermostat causing the transmissions to run at 195* F before opening. You can flip the pill and spring inside to make the cooler lines flow all the time. Set all your slip rpms to 20, only time you would put 0 is if you have a tripple disk converter but you will also have to change other parameters to get it to stay locked. Some GM operating systems as we have found out in HP tuners will not keep the converter locked. Working in a transmission shop and tuning with Hp tuners I have seen a lot worse issues with people trying to 0 these slip tables out. It will make your factory junk torque converter grenade faster...

      I ate two circle Ds on mine before I went back to an upgraded stock one. Sucks cause I’m pushing a 6.2 l86 and a whipple. So it leaves a ton on the table. Trans is fully build to hold 800. And now it feels like it’s about to finish this converter off after a year. The amount of time, money and research I have into this trans is depressing. It’s smiles not miles right.

      @@frankm4611 Gm built one of the best engines in the gen V motors but their transmissions suck ass lol. I am currently running a circle D twin disk in my L83, I keep 20 rpms slip in every gear and so far no problems at last oil change at 80k miles.

    • @Matt_Sanford

      They still slip with the setting set it 0 slip. It just has the ECM PWMing the converter to attempt to maintain lock versus chasing a higher rpm slip. I have literally tuned over 10,000 6L80es this way as I travel to transmission shops in the morning and tune all of the 6L80s. Of ALL of the years of working with transmission shops and converter builders… you are the ONLY one that has ever made that statement. I have personally put over 500k miles on my own personal 6L80es with TCC slip set to zero and those trucks still have the factory torque converters and transmissions.

      For me, it hasn’t mattered either with some slip or zero slip. I will say that the video helped with the shifting a ton. Can’t thank you enough for that. It was good before but now it feels like it’s putting more power down. Best time on my draggy was 5.5 0-60 now I would expect it to be much closer to 5.25. But my converters…. I’ve tried every thing I can get my hands on. Every video I could find that makes sense. Paid for books and even a few “experts” still have bad luck with the tcc. Has all the hardware goodies short of a dedicated drag truck too. Even with this video I have tables that don’t match with yours and all the others and so I have to make compromises or estimate what it would be, with my fingers crossed. But again, I’ll keep watching, this video and the burn-out one helped a lot. Thanks

    You sure about the TCC apply ramp rate? It says " this is the apply pressure RATE for the TCC...Its a rate, it will be faster with a smaller number. Siu automotive tested this also. He increased it be 30% and it had a slower time with less pressure. Lots of conflicting info on that chart for sure.

      You have to raise the shift MPH as well to match the shift rpm. It is really more MPH based than it is rpm based.
