I just got a TKL Ninja with Cherry MX Blues in 2022 for the sound, now I can strongly say this is one of the best keyboards to type on period.
Immediately felt the difference and I can type measurably faster, but most importantly, with more accuracy. Did not regret!
aww yes, a man of culture!
well, it's been 6 years. I wonder how it's doing now.
Lucky for you I watch my comments like a hawk. Using the same kb as the new one in this video. Still top tier. Could use a cleaning but absolutely still my favourite ever and i wish they would sponsor me. 🤣 ...perhaps we need another video update haha
yeah you should do another update if you want to lol
Hello. Got a Filco Majestouch 2 UK ISO keyboard, with Cherry MX Blacks and Filco's own tall spherical ABS double shot keycap set, from the Keyboard Company over here in the UK. It's served me well for over a year now. Deep, solid thunks with a faint, but nice, metallic ring to it when typing. Feels and sounds just like the proper home computer keyboards from the 1980's, like those with original Apple Macintoshes or BBC Micros.
Very nice! Filco is still my favourite KB manufacturere all these years later! Awesome to hear you're enjoying yours aswell!
The wire keycap puller is better for your keycaps. The ring puller might be easier to use, but they will scratch your caps. It's a huge no-no especially when you have a good set of caps(gmk,sp). I still use the ring one for my corsair abs caps, as they seem to not scratch as easily, but i exclusively use wire puller for my pbt keycaps.
Useless Dog 'better' is subjective here because your opinion is based off just that. If the ring puller does its job with better functionality, to me...its better.
never had a scratch on any of my keys. The rings barely touched the sides whete the wire ones literally slide metal down the sides of the keys. But ive never noticed scratches from that one either.
*shrug...to each their own!
@@donmowatt What @Awl said is fact and not opinion. There is a chance ring puller can scratch your keycaps, but no danger with wire puller. It might not be something big, but if you get 200$ GMK caps, you don't want that.
Also, wire puller slides down the sides of keycaps but there are no sharp edges on the wire and the force which pushes the metal towards the plastic is very small. While with ring puller, there is a sharp edge and the force that pushes that sharp edge towards the keycap side is much bigger.
@@ivaylokehayov6957 there is no sharp edge and i've never scratched a key. User error has a pretty big margin.
@@donmowatt there is sharp edge on all my ring pullers and I scratched a space bar with one of them. It happened because of my stupidity, so I agree with what you said about user error. But I think with wire puller is not even possible to scratch it.
Solid review and quality sound on the type test. 👌
thx ashieee!!!!!
Thanks for the review.
It helps a lot.
I was considering between the Corsair k70 and Filco ninja.
Though they are both cherry mix blue,
seems like the sound of filco is clearer and lighter.
no problem man!
I'm glad you liked the review and appreciate the feedback!
The corsair k70 was actually a keyboard i was looking at because living in canada i knew how long i would have to wait to get another filco, from japan.
What can I say!? SOOOOOOOOO worth it.
Filco Forever.
ALL Filco keyboards ship from Japan.
Life simplified.
Well im sold, i think im ordering up one of these boards they really look nice, how ever i think ill order up some PBT key-caps.
Currently rocking the coolermaster cm storm cherry mx blues decent board but i would like a full size
You wont regret it!!
I've never typed on a Cooler Master keyboard but i'll take your word for it ;) This will be an awesome addition to your setup!
The cooler master is pretty decent how ever the enter key stabilizer isn't all that great i notice probably just mine but other than that its pretty decent. I understand that for them to sell this board for 75$ at the time when cherry switches costed so much they have to cut corners.
I like your box opener, but might be a little bit overkill 😄
I feel lucky I am living in Japan 😁 but not all the models are always available. I am not sure if they deliberately create artificial scarcity or not but it seems there is always certain model out of stock on most Japanese websites.
they should have included agnostic super keys
You just needed to order some new caps
Ha! Not quite my friend. The switches themselves need a thourough cleaning first! But a new set of caps would do this keyboard justice forsure!
Filco needs to get with the program and start using PBT keycaps. The ABS just get too shiny too fast. At least you can buy a good set of PBT side printed keycaps for cheap though from KBDFANS to replace the ABS they come with.
i do agree, pbt would be nice!
No problem man. Now I know this video is pretty old now, so how is the shine on the new Filco board keys?
m.imgur.com/a/PV4qn4h Been using my Filco Majestouch2 ninja for about 4 years now. I love it so much. I ordered mine from a shop in Seoul and it came with a Italian Red Kobo frame. I lubed the MX browns about 1.5 years ago and when I did noticed how hollow the underside of the stock case can be. So about 2 months ago I heated and pulled off a slab of neoprene sound dampening from the inside of an extra NZXT H440 side panel I'm not using and filled the case with it. It stopped the keys that would make pinging noises from doing it anymore. Then added a tai hao set of keycaps I liked and a few cherry blossom artisans. I want to add custom coiled cable eventually and itll be all done for me then.
that is one fan freakin tastic keyboard. wicked!
Replace the caps in the old one, clean it keyboard and sell the keyboard for spares on /r/mechmarket ;)
definitely not a bad idea!! I'll look into that, thanks man!
Someone with good enough skills might be able to replace the broken switches ;)
Is it better than razer yellow/orange/green switches?? Filco looks solid..
Better? That really depends what's important to you.
My gf is typing on a Razer Blackwidow v1 and although the keys are also clicky.. To me they do not feel as crisp of a click and also..Razer seem to make their keys pretty narrow, or maybe its because the keys are displaced by macro keys on the left of the board. Regardless, I have trouble typing on it and in that regard, prefer my Majestouch 2.
I have no personal experience with their v2 switches - yellow/orange/green .. but as far as i understand, Razer has multiple manufacturers making their switches (double check my information) including Kaihua, Kailh and Greetech. *source* - www.tomshardware.com/news/razer-green-switches-kailh-exclusive,32142.html
As far as how feel goes - my gf's Razer Blackwidow does NOT feel as tactile and responsive as i would feel. I'd also say the keys feel a little springy? or mushy? ..not quite sure how to explain it but my Filco Majestouch 2's MX Blue's feel like a deeper audible click and thud when i bottom out a key.
Hope this helps
- Don
Thanks mate. razer chrome v2 is actually my first choice.. until i saw the filco which is looks really sexy, especially the ninja one..And i also doubt the quality of razer, i have read a lot of bad reviews. i guess i'll go with the filco.
You made the right choice.
Are the key caps shown the ones that come with the filco?
abirch2014 yep! The front printed keys are an option you were able to get when purchasing the board. Seemed to get discontinued fairly quickly
Still enjoying that Filco? Did you order it from Amazon Japan?
1000% the best keyboard ive ever used, every single day I use it.
I actually want to find a few more and buy them just to have them...#hoardertendencies coming on strong.
Yes, I still recommend it over any other keyboard on the market. period. Or even the Filco brand as a whole. - for those who prefer quality over flashy crap....and thats not to say all gaming, led, lightup, razer green switchy, media controls, glossy surface (im looking at you DASKeyboards) keyboards are crap, but im really not a fan of the gimmickry, and nonsense decisions over something that serves a sole purpose...typing.
Awesome man, I too prefer the simple, professional look. Not a fan of even backlighting. In Canada I can't justify the price for the Filco all that much, so I bought a Rosewill RK9000V2 with Cherry Browns. The thing is, it is also a Costar built board like Filco. Not exactly the same of course, but same style and good build quality. I've just bought another Rk9000V2 but with Cherry Blues, just wanted some clicky-ness again. Very happy with it, especially considering the price.
Great review! Do you know which of these have the best quality structure and keycaps: Filco, Varmilo, Realforce, WASD, Leopold, Das Keyboard? I can't see the difference and never owned one. Also, you mentioned that you owned Das Keyboard. That was my number one to get (Version 4 pro) once I started a research. Why did you go with Filco instead?
*FILCO*
I owned my original Filco Majestouch 2 since 2011 when they came out. The PCB was redesigned for the majestouch 2 and was made from a more resilient material than previous models of the Majestouch board, they also mount the PCB on a metal base plate. The PCB had been re-designed it so the solder pads go through the holes drilled in the board and the PCB is more heat resistant to allow for better solders. I can tell you from 6 years of Nerdraging on that OG board & spilling several pops/beer, then dumping copious amounts of 99% alcohol into the board to dissipate the spilled liquids.... that the board worked until the very day i packed it away. 6 years of use and it was a champ til the end!
More info on the Majestouch 2 here - www.keyboardco.com/blog/index.php/2012/12/an-introduction-to-filco/
*VARMILO*
Varmilo boards, I have no personal experience with but after some digging into their build process... I am nothing short of absolutely impressed with the die-casting process they use to produce their magnesium-alloy cased boards. Lightweight, strong, and they even offer 60 / 80% boards!? Awesome!
Although the options for switches are all the cherry mx switches. So I don't expect too much a different typing experience. The magnesium case might make cherry mx switches feel different.
edit - heres a look into that manufacturing process -imgur.com/a/kG64e
*REALFORCE*
Realforce boards are another one i've had no personal experience with, but - they have ABS Plastic Cases and are not held together with screws, the keycaps from a PBT Plastic. I've read that although it is a rubber dome, they are comparable to the feel of the 'softness' of a piano, while still retaining some tactility.
*WASD*
WASD was one of the companies I originally looked at along with Filco, Ducky and Daskeyboard when I was first getting into mechanical keyboards. I really liked their keycap customizablity. Apparently they buy their keyboards from Costar, and put their variant touches on it. They produce custom etched or laser engraved keycaps in their own factories.
*LEOPOLD*
I've heard wonderful things about Leopolds build quality. They have a metal base plate that the PCB is mounted on (same as filco). Apparently they dual layer their PCB's for extra rigidity, very comparable to how sturdy and strong a Filco feels.
*DASKEYBOARD*
I wish I could say I saved the best for last but since I've owned a Daskeyboard Model S, what I can honestly say is...I feel like they are more concerned with visual appeal then solid build quality. Although i'm going to counter myself by saying I bought my Model S when they were a brand new company and they manufacturing process' may very well have improved from feedback from customers, including myself, who sold the keyboard due to keycaps breaking under normal use(the molds underneath cracked) on several keys.
I'd look into seeing if you can find out any build information about them in recent years.
Thanks for your comment/question Elias!
Wow, thank you for some much usefull information! I'm sure others will find it usefull too! Thanks a lot!
P.S. I bet you enjoyed typing it using your Filco.;)
Also, good point on RealForce's cases. They are indeed made of ABS and wear out. I wanted it so bad but now not really.
I noticed Das Keyboard on Costar's website... Now I see how they started.
I absolutely did, hahaha, *clackity click clack*
Glad I could help out some!
filco , wasd and leopold are at the top .
Das keyboard can NOT compare witht hese 3 brands .
What Japanese shop did you get your first keyboard from? Can you provide a link?
back in the day i ordered straight from diatec(manufacturers of filco keyboards) - www.diatec.co.jp/en/det.php?prod_c=774
although just looking now it says they cannot accept online orders from a foreign country...how messed up is that lmao!!!
EDIT: This might be because this keyboard (front printed keys) is now discontinued ...and i have no idea why, this layout was/is AMAZING. I'd buy a backup one if I could find another.
NCIX page says they do not carry them anymore - www.ncix.com/detail/filco-majestouch-2-ninja-cherry-2a-70726.htm
I live in canada and bought my recent replacement off amazon - after quite the hunt.
Search term you're going to want to use is the model of the keyboard - FKBN104MC/EFB2
Best of luck!
thanks for your reply! I live in russia, so it's a lot harder to get one, because it's like no-one is willing to ship to here. I only found keyboardco in the uk that is kind of ok, but was hoping to get a cheaper one directly from japan.
UPDATE: Oct 17/2018 - I randomly checked up on the keyboard on diatec's website and it it saying it is currently available again, in the front key printed style. - www.diatec.co.jp/en/det.php?prod_c=774
People outsdie of Japan will still have to buy this keyboard here - amzn.to/2gMdUYs
Are the keycaps made of pbt?
I am 98% sure they are ABS. info here : /r/MechanicalKeyboards/wiki/keycap_guides
what did the note say?
Thanks for shopping with us, we are glad your goods reached you, Please leave some feedback on our store page.
Thats pretty much it :)
oh wow somehow i literally missed you zooming in on it no worries @@donmowatt
what is the difference between filco ninja majestouch 2 and the non-ninja? Dont get it
Also, you have 2 copies of the same version (ninja)?
The non ninja should have top printed keys, instead of front printed keys - which i prefer ..and on my original keyboard, because you're not making constant contact with the lettering, my lettering is still pristine (on the og keyboard)
and yes now i have 2 copies of the same keyboard and i wish this was still made because its the only keyboard i want to type on for the rest of my life.
Filco has set a standard ive found unmatched in absolutely EVERY other keyboard company. -- If there is another keyboard company that thinks they can come close to the quality of a filco, i will happily receive a board to review.
Honestly dude a CM MasterKeys PBT is basically the same thing as Filco (Costar built) but it comes with better keycaps. Now, the keycaps are only laser etched PBT, so the letters will wear off. But you can buy identical Filco keycaps but in PBT (better than the ABS that gets shiny as you can see in your video) for $25 USD from KBDFANS. Check out the OEM profile keycaps.
@@brydon10 Except that the font on the CM is atrocious to me, and ever since i went front printed keys, there's no going back!
the shine on the other hand, never really bothered me too much but if i could get front printed pbt keys that are filco clones, down to the font, i'm in.
That's a really good price! I'll check em out, thanks dude
Is the whole keyboard made of plastic or does it have a metal deck?
The whole keyboard is plastic but its built like an absolute tank. Very high quality plastic.
Stronger and more solid feeling than any other keyboard ive typed on in the past 5+ years. (razer chroma, daskeyboard, corsairs, etc)
For anyone that stumbles across this: Yes, the switches are mounted to a metallic deck.
Is Filco best for gaming?
It's really up to you what keyboard is going to suit you best - but for me? Filco has always been a strong, reliable board. that has withstood the most outrageous abuse over the years, and keeps on kicking. I am not a huge fan of RGB and all the frills. Filco nails it in alll the places that matter for me .. Strong/long lasting mechanical switches - check .. Well thought out design (front printed keys to virtually erase key wear) check!! .. Strong board overall? check! ..DONE..im sold.
Feel is all personal.
Thanks a lot for review i am buying it. But bit confused on which cherry mx switches brown/red/blue. Can you help me in that too @kOs day
@@anujkamble8885 Brown switches as far as i remember have a tactile 'click' feeling to them but they are quiet like black switches
Black switches are quiet and provide no tactile 'click' feeling
Blue and red switches are light feeling and clicky - with red's just taking less downforce to actuate because it is a linear switch (same force required down/upward) ..and because so it is also less 'clicky"
a good article to see visuals associated with Brown/Blue/Red switches can be found here
www.tomshardware.com/reviews/mechanical-keyboard-razer-logitech-gigabyte,3505-2.html
they sound mushy
They definitely are NOT as clicky as my replacement one.
No rgb :(
thank goodness...keep the cheap marketing gimmicks on cheap boards imo.
Filco is performance - hold the frills.
@@donmowatt well i exchanged my logitech g810 with cosair k70 lux. Its only red backlit keyboard while g810 was full rgb. I just love mx blues
@@Audacitycs1 nice! I bet the corsair board feels 10/10 compared to the logitech one!! Sweet upgrade dude!
@@donmowatt yeah it really is. When the computer is off I just put my hand on the keyboard. So satisfying.
