Hey Seth, I'm the deck creator. Thanks a lot for featuring my list and for this real cool video! I never thought I'd see the day where Saffron Olive would feature one of my brews and have a blast with it! I've been a big fan of you for many years now, actually! I tend to draw small crowds with this brew, here in Tokyo, so I always knew it had abrew-potential!
Awesome deck man. Feels like it can even be 'catch-them-off-guard' competitive. Tempted to build this myself. Always wanted WasteNot to work in 8rack, but it didn't. You makde it work here!
been in the hospital for a week and literally this weekly video is all ive been looking forward to, and what got me through today. thanks for doing what you do seth!
I like how non-comboey this version is. Rather than just being bad storm, it's like a crazy value-combo engine without too many bad cards. I wonder if bedlam reveler has a place in this deck.
Like, it's a way to extend the combo when you haven't drawn a wincon, but have a bunch of dead fetchlands and black mana leftover. And worst case scenario, you still take a couple of cards out of your opponent's hand.
I build this deck with value and synergy in mind; not storm count. There is some combo element to it, but it is all centered around Waste Not and other playable cards.
I have no clue about modern but the way how you did the deck tech before and went through the strategy was very helpful. So I at least had an idea about what you were trying to do. Good games very exciting to look at.
I was really disapointed at the only wincon in the deck being a one-of empty the pits instead of grapeshot or torment (of course in numbers more than one, losing to one discard spell is an unacceptable deckbuilding mistake)
Yeah, you're right. Torment seems very solid because even if you torment for 5, they discard their hand, or sac their board for the most part, and even then, it means they've discarded enough cards to give you 2/2s
Snapcaster mages are essentially backup copies. You don't just lose. Punisher cards like torment are almost never good as fair cards. It's too easy to pay life against a combo deck like this. I think one grapeshot or one banefire would be a helpful way to beat ensnaring bridge or some sort of nevermore//lost legacy//discard and exile.
I guess if you're not playing Empty the Pits, you don't need a big graveyard, so maybe an Emrakul helps you to not deck yourself? (Also, sometimes you actually get the mana to cast it with Waste Not, so it may work as an alternate win condition... xD)
You weren't going to deck at 21:07 if you Dream Salvaged. It's really easy to tell too! At least if you remember and keep in mind no cards left your opponents graveyard up that turn. That means the amount of cards in the graveyard got there this turn. Since there are 10 cards in the graveyard, and they all got there by discarding, you would draw 10 cards. Drawing 10 cards when you have 13 leaves you with 3 in your library. I think Dream Salvaging and hoping to hit the Empty the pits would maximize your chances of victory.
Can REP gaming products send you a box so we can see what they are actually like? I bought a ridge wallet after I saw how cool that was irl instead of just the picture.
I bought one, and I can say it's exactly how it looks in the picture. It's absolutely indestructible and it locks tight. The only downside is that it doesn't have space for dice, and you can't put in a regular divider for your sideboard.
I use the rep boxes for my edh decks. They are awesome especially if you have a bunch of expensive cards that you want to protect. The boxes will last you forever so it's definitely worth buying a few
I love this deck and waste not but I feel Vince’s (Pleasant Kenobi’s) waste not storm deck was more consistent and the combo was easier to pull off. His list was a bit more traditional storm with a bunch of rituals and past in flames to refuel his hand (you can recast dream salvage and burning inquiry to keep going off) and finishes with traditional storm finishers grape shot and empty the warrens, all the whole generating huge value making tons of zombies, drawing incidental cards, and making extra mana to keep going. It’s similar to yours but it cuts blue altogether and doesn’t require a certain few cards to go off. Sorry for blabbering on but leave a like if you read this far and find it helpful (it took a while to write lol).
I actually think this one is more consistent, by far. Vince's deck rarely went off at all, and you had to spend so much mana and cards building up the storm count, this doesn't need to play loads of cards just generate mana
I like this one. Doesn't care about storm count. Just cares about value and discard. Feels much more consistent. It's a control deck that suddenly 'Oh hey, I have zomnbies"
Sideboarding against bogles at 1:15:30 - Surprised you didn't want to bring in the surgicals. Bogles only runs a few hexproof threats. Surgically them away after making them discard it is backbreaking. Thoughts?
Jace's Archivist for a constant wheel effect, maybe reforge the soul. As an alternative to Empty, Torment of Hailfire gives you more discard, is removal, and is a win con, Cut // Ribbons is just decent removal, and doesn't feel bad if it gets Burning Inquiried or Faithless Looted away, or even Suffer the Past which drains the opponent for XB, exiles graveyard cards, and is an instant.
This is less Waste Not Storm and more Waste Not Want Not, or Waste Not Control. Also, Aejeeas is not the right way to pronounce Aegis, particularly as there's no "a" between the "i" and the "s".
I think it is more ayygiss (Ae is more of an Ayy sound, like Aether). The problem I run into is if it's Aejiss or Aeguiss. You know what, I'm looking it up. So after looking it up, it's like eejiss. Here to same the same. I was seeing the line and Seth said "We get a bunch of mana without anything to do". And I was like PAY 1, DRAW 5! .... Not sure if Seth forgot that the card was live because Chalice was now gone. Or if there was a strategic reason, but I dunno why we wouldn't have wanted to draw 5
Face Octopus exactly when you were mentioning. After Koz resolves. But before turn passes. It would have been a draw 5. Opponent had drawn 5 cards that turn. One normal. And 4 off koz.
I'd like to see this with Torment of Hailfire as the Finisher. You could fit more than one copy in the deck because of the discard, and is arguably easier to cast with a smaller "x" value to finish off the opponent.
Seth you say in the video and the article "One possible solution would be to add Manamorphose to the deck, as a way to turn some of our black Waste Not mana into whatever color of mana we need" . But I am confused how you cast Manamorphose with black mana?
Manamorphose seems like it would be really good as we seemed to be pinched on red quite often when storming off. Otherwise as others have said something like torment of hailfire or grapeshot as a backup finisher would be great in case Empty gets seized or something tho Snapcaster helps there.
Please tell me that I am not the only one salty at the early GG from an opponent? It is just incredibly frustating. great feeling though when you pull it out, but even more angry if you do lose. Just feels like its a dick move on the opponents part
Liliana's Caress is a really good finisher... and diggin deep to find waste not is also good. I play "Index" to get a waste not down on turn two. Shuffeling the deck with a fetch afterwards. 1 mana discard is crucial i think. Disrupting opp hand and then inqury or whistful can mess up a lot of game plans.. and perhaps a madcap/platinum combo could fit in some where? But yea, im not sure either that the perfect waste not deck have been found yet. Perhaps they will once print the perfect card for the combo.. exciting:)
Man, it hurt to see Seth use instant speed discard to win games and immediately side out fort game 2. It might actually be worth to run leyline of anticipation for the "never play on my turn" value. Also banefire might be better than empty the pits for uncounterable win from mana. Filter lands might help a lot more than a manamorphose or 2.
Dark Deal seems like a great option for wheeling your opponent since it can be cast with only black mana. Kederekt Parasite could be good if we could get red permanents reliably, Lilianas Caress could do some work too, not sure about megrim or underworld connections. As far as a mana dump for all the black mana, I'd run Cut//Ribbons, Flame slash for 2 is pretty good and it gives us a finishing blow to cast from our graveyard so we can discard it early
What about Cut//Ribbons? You can set it up with your own Faithless Looting, it does something against creature decks when you don't need the wincon, and it's not ruined if you have to play a Burning Inquiry in the middle and you discard it at random.
I liked someone else's suggestion of Banefire. But this may be much better. Since if it gets randomly discarded, oh hey, that's what you wanted. And worst case you cut one of your own zombies just to get it in the yard if you had to.
Lacking cards like manamorphose, grapeshot and SSG this seems more like a mid-range Waste Not build than the storm versions. A bit more interactive at least.
Love this deck! Definitely want to build it, but that seems like a lot of lands. Perhaps add Brainstorm instead of like 2 lands? Also: Aegis = "AE-Jiss" or "EE-Jiss"
I would play this with emtpty together a torment of hailfire for style points, or a banefire and a couple of simian spirit guides so you can close the game in the combo turn with the mana
i'm trying to build a budget version of this deck, because waste not looks like so much fun to play with, but i can't afford snapcaster mages, the fancy lands, etc... i was thinking wrench mind could replace collective brutality, raven's crime or vicious rumors could replace the kozilek/thoughtseizes, blightning could replace the kolaghan's... i can't think of what could replace the snapcasters and jaces though?? also the synergy there with faithless looting is obvious, but if i have no flashback mechanic then i don't think faithless looting is really worthwhile?? also it's worth noting that vicious rumors and blightning both have a burn effect... maybe it would be worthwhile to put in liliana's caress/megrim, bump in the night and something like vapor snag to add a streak of burn into the deck? if anyone has any ideas or suggestions (keeping in mind i want to use budget cards only), i'd really appreciate it!!!!
Manamorphose just doesn't do enough. If you want to filter the black mana, you're better off with an artifact that filters mana repeatedly. Also, Liliana's Caress is a nice alternative route to victory, giving you a pseudo-Waste Not 5 through 8.
I wonder about the wincon. I feel like against creature decks you probably win with zombies from waste not mostly. I also think the tapped zombies from empty the pits won't protect you in a pinch. Plus I think one of wincons are kind of loose, 2-of is so much safer. I wonder if just grave titan is the best option? You can hit 6 mana quite easily off of one or two activations and it's a win if you empty hand them (which is your game plan). But aside from that (maybe even nothing except waste not as wincon) against creature decks, against guys like the tron or other combo decks I think one or two copies of bitter ordeal would be best. You will hit a ridiculous gravestorm count and you can just exile everything they can win with, plus you can easily pay it from waste not mana.
Whispers of Emrakul - Target opponent discards a card at random, or two if you have Delirium. I think this deck needs modern Hymn to Tourach, random discard can be insanely debilitating. Dark Deal for another wheel effect in black.
I wish the deck had more to do with the obscene amounts of black mana. It feels like it starts to go off and draws a pile of red and blue cards that it can't cast. Maybe even Chromatic Star or Terrarion? That fixes the mana off the Waste Not and lets you keep landing your non-black stuff.
Yeah, that was one of my conclusions too. Some way to filter black mana to red/blue mana would be nice, we something made like 20 mana and couldn't do anything with it.
Hey Seth, I'm the deck creator.

It's easy to mispronounce whether it's Agis or Egis, but where the hell is he getting the U from?
1:23:51 Yes, Seth, it certainly was...

Raven's Crime sounds sweet.

You didn't. The initial Burning Inquiry made them discard Kozilek, which shuffled the graveyard.
I don't see it. Time stamp please.

also it's worth noting that vicious rumors and blightning both have a burn effect... maybe it would be worthwhile to put in liliana's caress/megrim, bump in the night and something like vapor snag to add a streak of burn into the deck?
if anyone has any ideas or suggestions (keeping in mind i want to use budget cards only), i'd really appreciate it!!!!

Manamorphose just doesn't do enough. If you want to filter the black mana, you're better off with an artifact that filters mana repeatedly. Also, Liliana's Caress is a nice alternative route to victory, giving you a pseudo-Waste Not 5 through 8.
At any point the audio gets better????
I know its too slow for Modern, but seen those Dream Savage i kept thinking of Locus God in this deck.
Would army of the damned
,be better than empty? I feel like even if you discard it you could flashback
I'm a simple man. I see storm, I click the video
There is a list that runs pyromancer ascension, but i think you where missing lilianas caress
