Tbh the first half of the video is the main driving factor for why the imperium suppresses ai and similar technologies. They need big armies with lots of people and subjects who cannot fight them, an automated factory produces no soldiers during peace and has no masses of workers who need to be convinced when its owned decides to go to war.
It is impossible for the imperium to keep track of every spec of plutonium in a factory that makes batteries by the million or find the few lines of code needed to secret it away, it is impossible for the thousands of people who would be required to do the work manually to even organize themselves enough to build a bomb if they wanted to.

Necromunda: we don't talk about the Porcelain Hills composed entirely of discarded bathroom appliances, let alone the Dollhead Wastes, or the ever-shifting, blue-tinged layers of the Biro Morass. We stay in the hives where things are (relatively) safe and sane.

Lascannons, wich in 40k are anti tank weapons that can eviscerate leman russ battle tanks that cause mild skinburns, chem and flamethrowers who do pitiable damage against people with half their bodies exposed. Another issue here is that in the tabletop all of the houses and gangs have tons of cool unit options. Goliath can get Stimmers who are Goliaths but even more roided up. Delaque can get Spkers who are psykers with severe hydrocephaly and atrophied bodies. Every gang comes out looking really cool and unique and instantly recognizable as being from a specific House or gang. In the PC game you're just running a gang of generic guys and ladies and that's really disappointing.

Finally, even tho people now had less time because of families and some even moved overseas, we could play together again online. Then we tried the multiplayer mode of this game. Not sure if it has been fixed since, but back then at launch there was a recurring bug where everything would go smoothly in a multiplayer game until you finished the mission, at which point it would crash to desktop and you would have no saves of the mission so it was just a waste of the last hour or so of your life.

The very first design choice I encountered, and couldn't get past, was the interface.
This is the only third-person strategy game in existence. There is no reason for that to happen.
(and the controls, as a result, can't rely on the usual "click on the icons" approach - but instead opt in favor of really bizarre, console-like contextual menus)
And yet, when I asked why could this even be a thing, I encountered a bunch of fans defending it - from context, it seemed like they don't normally play strategy/tactics games. Question "why is it in third-person?" was met primarily with "should it have been in first?".
The second choice, is the aesthetics: Mordheim the tabletop, is drawing people in not by the models, or the rules - but by illustrations with the palpable gritty texture. The closest stylistic match in recent videogames, would be Darkest Dungeon. And yet, Mordheim videogame looks like generic fantasy with a grey filter.
When tactical games are considered, performance should always take precendence before graphics: people who want graphics, play other genres anyway. And more so, if graphics get in the way of having a full warband.

I remember learning about Necromunda along the same time I was learning about the wider 40k setting back in the late 90s, early 2000s, and it was actually a really good synergy. Necromunda does as great job of showing what life is in a hive world, how incredibly dysmal and oppressive it is, how little human life matters (forget the battlefields, the real human cost is in the manufactoriums), how unbelievably massive hive cities are and how disconnected average humans are from the imperium at large (lots of people have never seen the sky and may not even know that other cities, much less other planets even exist), and how deeply, deeply callous the noble class of the Imperium is. I kinda feel like Necromunda incoculated me against this weird "actually the imperium is good because I saw some videos on the horus heresy"-thing you have going with newer fans of the setting. The noble class of the imperium COULD NOT give a shit about humanity, they purely there for their own selfish needs and they will shovel any number of millions of workers into the furnace if it means they get a nice new drug or spiffy hat or exotic food.

You got such a way of words and painting the scenes, and honestly this top-down cynical view of Necromunda and how it's system is specifically designed to suck is almost poetry. I'm a major convert to the current edition of Necromunda and I've been desperately been trying to sow the seeds for an underhive war locally for ages. Really does suck that the vidya adaptations are either janky or, well, *this*.
Extra notes on tabletop vs video game I noticed along the way:
    - Necromunda's modern ruleset essentially had a version uptick somewhere between the Gangs of the Underhive book releases and the more modern House Of/Book Of style of releases that sets the book concept closer to 40k and it's codices (for better or worse, as Necromunda is very much a book-heavy system with the core rules and optional add-on rules). Biggest notable diff between V2 and V3 is Prospekts (an alternate Juve who usually gets something special like a bonus unique piece of equipment like mounts, jetpacks, or special equipment rigs) and unique skillsets for the gangs. The Ash Wastes and (current) Secundus themed campaign releases are doing similar, first incorporating vehicles and second incorporating new gang units to expand base gangs again.
    - On House Escher vs House Goliath: Escher's dislike of Goliath's even more ironic thanks to their role in the creation of said gang. In the pre-Helmawr era of the Gang King Wars, the pre-Eschers defeated and destroyed the original House Goliath, meanwhile in modern eras them and House Van Saar were commissioned to create basically a genetic working class abhuman that could do manual labor . Thanks to House Delaque's meddling (not present in the above presentation but think spy tropes + Shadows Over Innsmouth) the project grew a bit too free-spirited, leading to the House Goliath of today. There's a tense but symbiotic relationship with House Escher, as they still provide the chemicals for the gene-smithing of new vat-born Goliaths.
    - On gameplay: Keeping to the Mordheim movement feels like a bit much for Necromunda in some ways. Necromunda has two player actions per turn, split between Simple (stuff you can do twice aka moving, reloading, etc), Basic (can only be done once per turn but only cost one action, aka shooting, activating things, using an item), or Double (naturally taking all your turn and includes Charging and firing unweildy guns). Necromunda also is more than happy to take dozens of turns of back and forth to get through a game, easily hitting Turn 10 or so if all gangs are equipped competently and good playing is happening. Making you able to travel halfway across the map (and seemingly no interaction for the use of movement enhancing stuff unlike the tabletop) shows a seemingly naiveness on why Necromunda is different than Killteam or Mordheim. I agree with some commenters, an NuX-Com approach woulda been better, hell this lines up with some of the upgrades Skills give you, which can grant you new actions as well as your passives depending on which of the generic (or your factional special skill tree if applicable) can grant you.
    - On endgame: Honestly if a tactics-based Necromunda game was made in future, i'd love for it to feature spectacle fights in it akin to some of the weirder missions out there. Boss battles with souped up Ambots, caravan heists on the Rolling Road ruleset where the ash waste is travelling around like a blur, hell maybe even something like the actual Endgame missionpacks in Apocrypha Necromunda, where if you think you're hard enough to try to bash past the palentine enforcers and other gangs to get to a shuttle to thread the Eye of Selene and do the ultimate power play a ganger could try. These out-there arbitrator level scenarios are easily some of the best color for Necromunda. There's also a huge wealth of new gameplay mechanics and content to bring in for a newer style game like that, with mechanics like Settlement construction and Rackets and Secundus Infiltration campaigns all able to potentially add so much more to this formula.

Where does all the food come from for Necromunda?
If I recall Coruscant, which was significantly less dark, (but not by much,) relied mostly on external imports of food to survive. There are also gardens at the poles and fungal harvesting from the levels below.

    • @WilliamSRD
      @WilliamSRD  Місяць тому +6

Imports, bodies recycled into corpse starch, and fungus scavenged from the Underhive!

To expand on Williams mention of corpse starch, one of the "gang" you can play on the tabletop is straight up former members of the guild that turns corpses into food that went mad from there work and now are basically chaos cultist that ply there former trade carving Necromunda dangers and others for there dark demon god.

They should've made it an XCOM-style game, and even add in Imperial Fist Space Marines as secret hardcore bosses.
Justified, Imperial Fists have not only Inwit and Terra, but also multiple other Imperial Worlds closer in Segmentum Solar from which they can recruit from. Necromunda being one of the higher quality ones.

The one thing thats always made me a little sad about Necromunda in every version of the game is it's never included the Spider Clan, a Hive gang clan, armed, trained and equipped by House Helmawr, on paper at least the whole clan counts as part of the Planatry Defence Force in effect a Hive Gang who is on the goverments payroll and probably halfway between a 40k Wagner and Blackwater.
I get why they arent in game, they'd out class all their opposition to a ludicrous degree, but I wish they'd get a bit more of a mention

All the interesting decisions within a battle in Mordheim came from balancing winning the match with gathering Wyrdstone and not taking too many injuries. Removing persistence in the story mode removes 2/3 of the game.

The really maddening thing about Necromunda and in leaser extent Mordheim is that a dedicated modding community could've fixed most of the issues with both games. I mean janky cult games with dedicated fan base usually get modded to a half-way decent shape.
The problem was that the creators and in some extent GW put their foot down when both games came out and basically threatened anyone willing to fix the mess or god forbid add new warbands/gangs.
It's been a long time, so the coast is most likely clear and any mods will be left alone, but that initial bullshit killed any possible modding scene for both games.
Oh I am sure that there are guys who have done the work to learn how the engine works and have made small mods that improve the game. And they are either too scared or too turned off from ever releasing them or connecting with each other to tackle bigger projects. (Ok Mordheim got some love, but there is still not united community, almost all of it is kept on discord and one off links)
Do you know what would be a great Necromunda game? OwlCat making a Necromunda cRPG next. Their writing and quality, merged with the Necromunda lore and mechanics. And we can be sure that they will make it a game about positioning and cover.

Huh. I played and really enjoyed Necromunda: Hive Wars. While I ran into a couple of bugs, it really was just a couple over the entire campaign. I found the builds that I liked for each gang and ran with it. I didn't get much out of the non-campaign side of it, but that's not what I was playing for.

On top of the valid complaints listed here. Necromunda feels like a case of the devs listening too much to the critics. They removed much if the difficulty of Mordheim and in doing so made the game feel empty. Near zero chance of injury or death, extra looting round, more movement, few unlockables. Without consequences, ir all made the game seem so pointless to continue.

The whole of the Hive World set-up kinda requires that the cycle continues forever.
When Necromunda runs out of junk from the past to exploit, it will not be able to make and send its soldiers to the stars, given how valuable the underhive is as a training ground.
The last breath of Necromunda will not be so clean.

Necromunda and Mordheim never died... They just became 'fan supported' until 2017 when Necromunda had a new edition released. You'll still find the fan supported items on a cool forum called Yak Tribe, where Mordheim still lives with fan support alongside Gorkamorka, and some fan brews of Inquistor 28 (28mm scale Inquisitor game) and Inquisi-munda (Necromunda skirmish rules, with Inquisitorial warbands).

Somehow ALL devs I heard about struggle on it and especially big devs. On other hand those who at least tried became ridiculously successful like Baldurs Gate 3. It is mind boggling why publishers and devs struggle into this concept...

How did they make a necromunda game and not include enforcers? The palatine enforcers are literally one of the most important factions in necromunda because they work for the government of necromunda, which means they do just about anything from putting down genestealer uprising attempts to shaking down hivers for their lunch money, they do so much in the setting and in this game they just dont exist, at least in hired gun(which is only marginally better than this game) you still get to do missions for the enforcers, even if you dont see them in game, at least i dont think you do

And when one gang doesn't seem to be able to do the whole job,he recruits the others. And once they kill each other for the tech,he can eiter swoop in and finish off the winner and take it or just buy it off whoever they sell it to. Pretty simple plan.
