I really don't think it's possible to deliver an authentic mordheim experience with a 5E compatible game. 5E is designed from the ground up for heroic fantasy and isn't very flexible in what it's capable of (as much as I wish it was). You would have to gut the whole system and replace most of the player facing options at which point it wouldn't be compatible with other D&D source books.

    • @ikaemos
      @ikaemos 7 місяців тому +1

@@kayosiiii Eeeh? I fundamentally disagree; I don't think 5e is designed from the ground-up _at all._ WotC purposely made it a flabby, one-size-fits-all fantasy-onesie; what little focus they could spare, they used to evoke OSR-style gaming. 5e's scaling is flat as a board; it's almost entirely resource-based; it has the kind of low-definition ruleset to allow for tactical infinity - I mean, it's halfway to being Shadowdark already. The only thing WotC didn't expect is how popular the game would become, and how it would be played (i.e. in low-combat, narrative-first, character-focused campaigns). It's not "designed for heroic fantasy"; people use it for that because _they don't know any better,_ and it just so happens to be a loose enough system for that to be somewhat workable.
As far as the Mordheim is concerned... well, I'd personally use WFRP, but 5e isn't _badly_ suited for it, especially at low-levels; arguably, it's closer to its intended purpose than for heroic fantasy campaigns. The _Drakkenheim_ books add OSR-style procedures for moving around the city, exploring its locations, finding and using up resources, and avoiding contamination. Most importantly, you can't rest in the city. You'd be surprised how easily 5e turns into a grueling death-march as soon as you actually have to engage with its resource economy.

@@JoshuaJacobs83 Skaven are a creation of chaos. The common folk of the Old World largely see all things chaos as monsters, mutants, or demons. There's no distinction made between them. Skaven don't generally make themselves known without a cause, so it isn't rare for common folk that do see them to speak of monsters that look like rats that walk and talk like a person. The gernal knowledge of Skaven isn't so much a secret as it isn't a topic that is educated to the masses.
(clarification* Detailed conversation concerning chaos isn't done. There's many reasons for this. Tactics in warfare. The possible spread of corruption. Inducing undesired fear and/or concerns.)
There certainly are humans that know of the Skaven threat. It comes down to forced encounters, or a required study. Other races definitely know of them, and their capabilities. The lizardmen, dwarves, and elves all have had battles with them in the past, and such histories are not ignored by them. It is unknown to me that any of them know the extent of the Skaven population, or even reach.
So Skaven are a myth is an expression for the uneducated, or ignorant masses. The joke in this being, that they are pretty much everywhere, and yet not recognised by a large number of the human race.

10:27 There are TWO moons in Warhammer Fantasy: Mannslieb and Morrslieb. Mannslieb is similar to our own moon and has a predictable 25-day orbital phase, while Morrslieb, on the other hand is a giant hunk of warpstone that was spat out into space from the northern polar gate's destruction. It's orbit is entirely erratic and unpredictable, and can at any time appear closer or farther than Mannslieb. The Slaan have attempted multiple times to destroy Morrslieb, but the only thing it accomplishes is the occasional rain of warpstone meteorites on the planet.
Until you get to the End Times when Clan Skyre blows Morrslieb to pieces (because...reasons), and the debris from the moon destroys the entirety of Lustria.

Once you get started in Mordheim you start doing no backtracking (in missions), no skipping days, no firing, no map runs. Then you add in themed warbands like "everyone has poison" or "it's all magic, what could go wrong?" or "Who brings a sword to a gunfight?" And then your carefully built sniper squad gets ambushed and half of them lose an arm.
One thing I really love about the game is the character name box has a lot of space, as does the description. Back when I streamed the game I allowed chat to name the characters or come up with backstories for them, I then added to the backstories as the characters got injured. I just wish that you could click on the dead guys name in the warband history to get his backstory that you wrote.

I fell out of love with Mordheim, the AI over time starts cheating, if you've almost completed objectives, it stops playing to win and starts playing to game-ruin. Ganking crew members it shouldn't have knowledge of, suiciding units to deny knowledge, looting wyrdstone and then rushing into neutrals. Neutral daemons also tended to aggressively stalk your crew, but will only incidentally target AI warbands. Lastly, the fact that AI warbands are generated when battles start means you're never dealing with enemies with permanent injuries. The game is so close to perfection but falls apart when you really commit to it.

    • @dragonknight196
      @dragonknight196 7 місяців тому +12

Exactly. In a real campaign you could run into under powered warbands from injury and death, just as you might be under powered by those things. They missed the mark here (i'd say by about 20-30 %).

    • @raifthemad
      @raifthemad 7 місяців тому +8

AI will know all your troops positions for the rest of the match, as soon as it sees one of your troops once. Just found out that idiocy this year.
I would give honorable mentions to sometimes moronic map gen as well though. Once upon loading up a "gather warpstone" map, all of it was in a cluster on the other side of the map, behind enemy wagon. So in order to get to any of it, I would have had to fight through all the enemies, somehow manage to leave enough of them alive, so they wouldn't run and still have enough troops to run for that spot. Never seen a map, where all the warpstone is right next to my wagon though.
Oh yeah, and let's not forget the damn ambush maps. If you're doing too well and aren't getting any of your guys KO'd, suddenly, instead of a mission you chose, a random enemy gets to ambush you. Getting the first turn free and starting within striking distance of your troops, who haven't even had time to take any defensive stances. Basically getting a free round of beating on your guys because devs are flipping pieces of excrement. Never gotten to ambush enemies like that. So it must be a one sided mechanic, that human player doesn't get to use.
What to me shows their lack of effort, is the damn consoletrash UI on a PC port. No effort put into making a good user interface, that can take advantage of keyboard capability.

Fun video as always and while I am familiar with the setting I always appreciate the deep dives you do at the start so that people have proper context. One thing that really interests me regarding this game is that it is arguably the Warhammer game that is the most about creating your own force and following the story you and circumstances create rather then following exactly the story the developers made. There are story missions but you can choose when to do them and most of your time is going to be in skirmish style fights.
Fun fact about the lore: This timeline wise is the earliest a warhammer fantasy game has been set with most games either being set when Magnus was Emperor or Franz was.
I do hope Old World does well enough that a new Mordheim tt game is created though it is likely going to cover multiple different cities over the course of its life if the other side games are any indication.

The worst one for me being one of the chaos missions, where you're against another chaos faction, and all of them are immortal, unless you do fire damage and that fact either isn't spelled out at all, or is not really emphasized nearly enough. So I had to check the internet, why the hades my enemies refused to drop below 1hp. Since only freaking way to do fire damage, is carrying limited use items with you, it's not only tedious as hell, bu you never before or after need such items, so without prior knowledge, there is no incentive to hoard that trash. I got blocked in by two of them on the approach in a narrow tunnel, so even though there should be caches of such items on the map. I couldn't get to them. At least not in time to get back and save my guys who were in melee with said immortal buggers. I just rage quit that mission and my chaos war band has been stuck in that same spot for years, since it saves when you exit. Removed any incentive to start another chaos warband, knowing that this mission would be something I'd have to play through.

A very interesting video on a game that does not get nearly enough recognition.
Very well explained and generally argued. I will expand a bit on the X-COM comparison, since you brought it up yourself.
In X-COM (Enemy Unknown/Within), a typical Character has two move actions and one attack action. Exceptions exist, but this is the baseline.
In Mordheim, even a lowliest of Henchmen who has reached Rank 3 (out of 10) gets two attacks. And non-Henchmen can reach, say, 5 with some Skills (ignoring support Skills on others that can give more).
This means that, in X-COM, you have so few rolls a round, that you are somewhat at the mercy of RNG. When you miss that 95% chance to hit Shot, well, that Character is not shooting again. So you better have another ready to go or you are scrod because you rolled a one out of a D20.
Whereas the amount of attacks in Mordheim is a bit higher, so you can make a rough statistical guesstimate on what is likely going to happen. Which means that, while Mordheim is reasonably hard, I have exactly one Mission in the past five hundred or so where I can say that the loss was not down to me making a mistake. And even that one was really low Rank match (less stats: less rolls) against Ambushing Skaven.
As said, a very thorough video.
If you do make a league or something, I do recommend Mordheim Monster Magic mod, at the very least. It fixes some of the bugs and lack of quality of life features you mentioned. And, with right launch parameters, it still changes little enough that it is just about vanilla Mordheim but better, so there is literally no case I can think of where I do not recommend using it, at the very least.
Sure, there is another Mod, but that changes balance, so that may not be everyone's cup of tea.
Anyway, the Tournaments of Mordheim community would appreciate if, whenever any of you plays PvP or the campaign or whatever, if you posted the link into the video-links section on Discord. Might catch some new viewers that way.

Although not directly related, I have begun playing Warhammer underworlds, this is a bizarre game to explain, at first I was apprehensive, not being a fan of the age of sigmar models, however one day a friend of mine insisted we play a match and oh boy I been hook ever since, solid gameplay interesting and very varied warbands and the desginers are pushing the boundaries of the core mechanics.
Anyway the best I can describe it is a short hybrid skirmish game, where you play with both miniatures and a somewhat TCG card play, I can't recommend it enough it's a very entertaining game and also has some narrative to it although it is not well fleshed out. It also has an outdated videogame but it does teach you the basics if you can check it out. I mean it is just a solid game there's no way to hide it. The only downside is GW does not produce all the warband all the time and some have become somewhat of a collective item.

And BTW, I know no one will believe, but it was I that actually made the awful "But that's heresy!" Sister of Battle meme. I've even redrawn it a few years ago.

Oh this game, still have a save where I have a team of skaven that all rolled the same last name. So I just went with that was the name of the Minor clan they were from and were just working on behalf of Eshin. They ended up being rather heavy on the Stormvermin/Wyrdstone guards. Been building the story of this little clan on and off every now and again. Made them a renegade clan thats more or less non-persons to other skaven unless they need something done without it being known what clan really ordered it,if you are too cheap to hire Eshin and don't mind things getting a bit loud.

You misunderstand how old GW views lore. Lore is an idea or example for you to build on. Your job is to figure out what your dwarf gang wants in a street fight. You don't need to sit and wait for GW to make the deep lore about cults and fleets and gangs.
White Dwarf was always the in-house magazine for Warhammer stuff, with or without other games in the early years. And with a sometimes confusing amount of other mags for specialist games. Town Crier had a lot of the Mordheim stuff.

Yeah. I'm one of those that loved the game, but agree that its jank as all hell. I wish we could get a sequel.
Also just a heads up. You can make a pretty tanky Skaven team, but its tough. You have to use the terrain to your advantage. Set up in choke points, doorways, inside houses and so on where the number of enemies don't matter. You want to go mostly for Warp Guard decked out in heavy armour while equipped with clubs and shields. Backed up by a Verminkin or two with ranged weapons for scouting/poking the enemy. Hero units like Black Skaven can be used as spearmen to charge down enemies already engaged with the guard for big-swing damage. Then use Globadiers as buffers/healers with guns. That is just a rough overview mind you.

You didn't mention it, so I figured I'd mention it. There is, in fact, a rebalance mod for Mordheim out there that makes the underwhelming stuff more powerful, and dials back some of the overwhelming stuff to a reasonable state. The stuff a faction is supposed to be good at, is actually useful, while the stuff they struggle against has counterplay and ways to deal with it. For example, some weapons get the ability to ignore an amount of Armor for the Skaven. It's a fun rebalance and makes the early game a little more feasible for a newer player.

For a modern tabletop game like Mordheim there's Frostgrave (which is actually pictured in one of the slides near the start of the video).
Its setting is in the ruins of a thawing ruined city which has been frozen for a thousand years, where bands of treasure seekers led by Wizards seek out ancient knowledge. Its a very well supported system, with supplements coming out every year for nearly 10 years now. As are the system's rules used for other games by the same creator (like the sci-fi game Stargrave, which personally I used to represent Necromunda), which makes bringing in even further content fairly simple.
For anyone looking for a miniatures agonistic skirmish game that's not difficult to get into then I can't recommend Frostgrave more. The game can be played by one or more players, competitively or co-operatively, depending on what supplements you bring in. Model count is typically 10-ish models a side (half that if played co-operatively), a tonne of variety in terms of scenarios (each supplement featuring their own campaign), and what could probably be called an excessive amount of unique loot (rolling for loot post game is probably a standout part of the experience).

Actually Chaos interacts with Matter the same in 40k it's just that it has a stronger foothold in the Universe in 40k. It's also the same in that not everything made by Chaos is inherently evil or aligned with Chaos with examples of good or neutral creatures like Griffins, Demigryphs, Unicorns, Pegasi, Harpies, Manticores and Trolls. It's just that cases of good or neutral mutants are a lot less frequent in 40k because of the reason I mentioned earlier.

One of my favourite games of all time. It hits my Early Game Hell itch just right.
That said the lack of mods and conversions for this game literally kills me. It's partly because it's a niche game and there is smaller pool of magnificent bastards to do the work, but also because both GW and creators threatened suing anyone trying.
They did the same for the Necromunda game, thats why its still left in a very broken state. You can't convince me that the W40k nerds would've left it like that if they were not stopped from fixing it with mods.
Also not all factions added later were just hand waved that make no sense. Personal favourite is the Orphans faction, made up by the surviving children who banded together for survival. They have several unique mechanics and have some pretty good ideas. But what's more unlike the Kung-fu monks or the Amazons armed with laser weapons, they actually belong there.

I like Skirmish games because they are inbetween large scale wargames and pen-and-paper Roleplaying Games.
I am fan of tactical roleplaying games because they include combat, upgrading your character, and large scale than single-player games.
    Videogames like Fallout 1, 2, & Tactics, Baldur's Gate 1 &2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2 are tactical roleplaying games.
Ranting, but I dont like modern tabletop D&D because its abandoned the Skirmish/Tactical roleplaying combat. Youre not supposed to control multiple characters, used miniatures, or the 2d/3d combat being a focus.
Just seeing the models early in the video got me really excited.
I used to look for Warhammer smartphone games and there was a Mordheim game that got shut down 2 years ago. It was kind of fun, but it did have Permanent losses and often seemed Pay-To-Win. I remember how early on I had a Reikland warband that with heavy grinding I had 8 soldiers with full plate armor, Hochland Long Rifles, and a lot of skills. The company that ran the game ruined my warband when they took away Reikland's access to speed skills.

Just reached the end. Agree that act 3 was smooth as can be for me, too. I've played on 4 machines, including s laptop, as well as remote playing onto my phone with a dongled mouse, a tablet, Shadow PC, with a CPU as old as sn i7 4790 with an rtx 2060, an i5 13400f with a 6600xt, etc and never have a problem. I'm a hardware guy, and it is an actual fact that just having the highest end graphics card doesn't mean you'll play smoothly. A mid range card is far more likely to give smooth gameplay, because it's generation is usually on par with the development of the game. It doesn't need extra optimizing. It's literally likely the hardware the games were used in part during development. And if you're running say, a 4090 and have trouble, wuick crying st the devs to optimize. They have a virtually infinite number of hardware combinations they have to account for in optimization for that overkill Graphics Card. Learn how to optimize your dang hardware yourself. It isn't difficult for I've static PC setup. It's not arcane magic. All the machines i play on, the virtual machine on an old laptop lacking a gpu while outta state without steam logged in at home, and act 3 was flawless in 1500+ gameplay hours now, aside from patch 4, where the problem was the crime calculation problems, I've had zero act 3 problems and the only bug in 6 playthroughs is that jaheira randomly disappeared from camp in rivington oddly on one playthrough, and never returned, which cost me minsc (i am suspicious that in a battle with the Deva that appears after robbing stormshore temple donations, i didn't realize it snd so never thought to see if withers needed to rez her, lol).

I actually met Tuomas Pirinen, the original writer of Mordheim, a couple years ago. He said the Sisters won in the sense that female priesthood was officially accepted in the Empire, but uhh I dunno if it was maybe his original intention that never made it into official material after the Mordheim game was abandoned. The writers for the later editions of WHFB definitely didn't know what to do with them.
Another interesting thing was that he disagreed with the name Empire of Man. The Imperium Man claims jurisdiction over all humanity, but the Empire is totally cool with humans existing outside it. If anything was an official name, it should be the Empire of Sigmar. Empire of Man originated in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and seems to have been adopted by the people making the new Old World game.

    • @TheDeinonychus

Generally it's called 'the Empire of Man' because it is (at least for much of it's history) the largest human controlled nation in the setting.
